Mendieta and Allyn Harris wanted to do was write and perform some beautiful, innovative music and put it on tape.They ended up being asked to pontificate on the phenomenon of New Age music — a term few people know how to define — on national radio.As the Stanstead couple’s second album, Pools of Light came out on cassette, Harris and Mendieta sent out press kits and promotional tapes to get some publicity.It re- sulted, among other things, in an interview on CBC Radio’s Mor-ningside with Peter Gzowski.The subject of the interview was not their album, however.The subject was New Age music.“We didn’t design it as a New Age album,” Mendieta says, although he admits it has a lot of the features so-called New Age music tends to have.So what is New Age music?“I would call it a non-aggressive “it’s not one that blows your head off.” It’s a music designed to relax and soothe, rather than making the listener sit up and take notice.It frequently uses instruments and musical conventions borrowed from other cultures, he says.CONVENIENT HANDLE “Everyone’s running around trying to define it because people like to be able to describe things,” Harris says.She explains New Age as a type of music that is created when musicians of various backgrounds — classical, pop, folk and so on — work together and produce a type of music that overlaps all the traditional categories.For a record company or store, New Age is a convenient handle for music that doesn’t fit into any of the existing categories.Harris and Mendieta began their recording career just over two years ago when they recorded their album Cycles in a recording studio they had set up in their pink-painted home out in the country.It was originally designed to be a gift for some of their friends, featuring classical favorites and some original compositions with Harris on piano and Mendieta on guitar.1000 SOLD The album proved so popular that they had to produce more tapes, and eventually had a record album made.Doing all their own promotion, they have sold more than 1000 albums of Cycles so far.It brought in enough money to finance a second album.The innovative quality of Cycles made it a hard recording to classify.Harris is amused by an Ottawa store that placed it in a section labelled “New Age, New World, New Acoustic, Ethnic Overlap, and everything else”.Pools of Light, which features all original compositions, continues in the relaxing, unobtrusive mode of Cycles, but is far more technically complex, due to the use of synthesizers.In their press releases, they call it “an album of electroacoustic pieces”.The couple started thinking about getting into synthesizers after the Canadian Sesame Street producers, for whom they’ve both done some song-writing, suggested trying some new sounds for the show.Attending a concert by Laurie Anderson, a New Age musician who makes wide use of synthesizers, gave the couple the final push.“The next day I went out and bought a synthesizer," Harris says.UNLIMITED RANGE The synthesizer gave the couple an almost unlimited range of sounds to use.Deciding which ones to use became the hardest part of the recording process.They opted mainly for the more familiar musical sounds, such as the cello, rather than the more artificial sounds usually associated with the synthesizer.Using a synthesizer enables a composer to hear all the sounds he or she imagines, without having to hire an orchestra, Mendieta says.“Being able to put in the sounds from the synthesizer gets it closer to the music in your imagination and that’s very satisfying,” he says.Of course, there’s always the temptation to put make use of all the sounds available.The couple found they had to fight the tendency to put in “too many notes”.“We tried to keep the music sparse but rich-sounding at the same time,” Mendieta said.“The music can be very simple, but if there’s a lot of space the listener’s mind can fill it in.It’s kind of knowing what to leave out as well as what to put in.” Another innovation in this album is the use of natural sounds like the creek rushing past their place, and birds.They discovered this wasn’t as easy as setting up a tape recorder beside the brook.BATHTUB FILLING “You say ‘This sounds great’ and then you play it back and it sounds like your bathtub filling up,” Harris says.It took many tries to get the tape recorder set up at the right place to make the brook sound like a brook.As for the bird sounds, they had to resort to a sound effects tape.The album also makes use of some unusual instruments, such as a hand drum and an Indian instrument called a tambura, made out of a large pumpkin-sized gourd.Mendieta, who was bom in India, had the instrument made for him and imported.Although Harris and Mendieta enjoyed doing their own promotion of Cycles, they’ve hired a Toronto distributor for Pools of Light.The distributor will make the album available across Canada.Five hundred copies of the tape are now out on the market.The couple have been running around doing promotion ever since the album came out in early November, but now they’re hoping the quality of the album will speak for itself.“We feel it’s the very best we can do right now, this album,” Mendieta says.“We feel like if we can just get it out there, maybe it will do something itself.” Pools of Light is available in several Townships stores, but can
