Olympic Games this summer is also going to host an International Exhibition of Olympic and Sports Philately named OLYMPHILEX ’88.The event is to be held from September 19 to 28.This show promises to be the largest sports thematic stamp exhibition the world has ever seen.OLYMPHILEX is organized by the Ministry of Communications under the auspices of the Federation Internationale de Philatélie (FIP), and has the patronage of the International Olympic Committee and the Federation Internationale de Philatélie Olympique.A very prestigious event.Applications must be received by the OLYM- By Sheryl Ubelacker TORONTO (CP) — Jane Seymour, who is quickly becoming known as the queen of television mini-series, has travelled the world in her varied roles, playing the beautiful and alluring women of history and fiction. But the actress is no stranger to Canada.“I’m married to a Canadian from Winnipeg and I have relatives here in Toronto and Brantford,” Seymour said Tuesday at her posh hotel suite while in Toronto on a promotional tour for a line of fragrances. Her husband, David Flynn, is an entertainment business manager — ‘ ‘That’s how we met” — and the couple lives in Santa Barbara, Calif., with their two children.Seymour, who trained as a ballet dancer in her native England before turning to acting at 17, also said she spends time when in Toronto with prima ballerina Karen Kain, whom she met in Hollywood.Entertainment short CHICOPEE, Mass.(AP)— Mayor Joseph Chessey says he believes enough support exists among the city's aldermen to pass a resolution proclaiming that actress Jane Fonda would not be welcome to film movie scenes here.“She has all the right in the world to come to Chicopee,” Chessey said Tuesday.“But I do believe the veterans have a eonstititutional right to protest her visit.I just don’t want it to give the city a bad name.” Aldermen in neighboring Holyoke passed a similar resolution last week because of visits Fonda, an anti-war activist, made to Hanoi during the Vietnam War.Chessey said the proposed resolution could come before the Chicopee aldermen at a meeting next Tuesday.Chicopee and Holyoke have been chosen as backdrop for a few scenes in the movie Union Street because of their 19th-century canals.PHILEX committee no later than February 29, 1988.OUnfMETOS WELCOME TO OLYMPHILEX’ 88 International Exftbfon ol Olympic and Sports PNblely 19-28 September 1906, Seoul, Korea.Seymour came to Toronto via Spain, where she is filming Maria Callas, a television mini-series about the tragic life of the Greek-American opera singer. The program focuses on her tempestuous relationship with shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis and her heartbreak when he married Jacqueline Kennedy.TAKES LESSONS For her role as Callas, Seymour took singing lessons, even though it is Callas’s voice that will be heard when the program is broadcast in the spring.“I think it’s really interesting that a middle-aged woman who is known to have been one of the most beautiful, elegant divas of all times, the greatest opera singer of all times, should fall in love for the first time,” said Seymour.“She was almost like a virgin.“And I find it interesting that a woman who is that much in control of her life .could be that emotionally destroyed by this man.” A week before filming on Maria Callas began, Seymour was in England finishing yet another miniseries, The Woman He Loved—the story of Wallis Simpson and her marriage to the Duke of Windsor.“It’s insane really,” she said.“Only an idiot would play Wallis Simpson one week and Maria Callas the next.” Korean stamps are available through, Korean Philatelic Center, C.P.O.Box 5122, Seoul 100, Korea These are the major shows coming up.In addition, I believe there is to be a somewhat major stamp show in Czechoslovakia. Two of my favorites, because I exhibit at them, Stampshow, is to be held in Detroit this year.Mida-phil, as usual, will be held in Kansas City sometime in October.More about them as time gets closer.Should you have any questions about stamp shows and their locations, please write to me at P.O.Box 688, Richmond, Que., JOB 2H0, Seymour plays the duchess through her mid-30s and 40s, as well as at the age of 74 for scenes showing her standing at the grave of her husband.Simpson, an American divorcee, was ostracized by many members of the Royal Family, who were bitter that the duke abdicated the throne to marry her.Seymour said her most personally moving part was as Natalie Jas-trow in War and Remembrance Part 2, a mini-series to be shown late this year that was partly filmed at the site of Auschwitz, where millions of Jews died at the hands of the Nazis.CATHARTIC EXPERIENCE “It was reality, it was no longer drama,” she said.“I feel it was almost a cathartic experience.” Her Dutch mother, who lived in Indonesia during the Second World War, was imprisoned in a Japanese concentration camp, and her Jewish father lost many relatives at Bergen-Belsen, she said.Seymour is non-committal about her acting plans after completing Maria Callas. One thing she wants is some rest and time with her husband and children, whom she will see for a few days when they meet in England on Friday. The get-together at their 15th-century estate near Bath will include a celebration for her 37th birthday Monday.i FIMI a Mm a nil Nl_y \i \ filatclian 12.1988—3 K900’s Silver has perfect timing, well usually. The many faces of Ted Silver. On the left he shows his Peter Sellers imitation. To the right you get an idea of the sort of things he has to juggle being a morning man and a progam director.||Mfi By Jack Branswell SHERBROOKE — Forget Swiss timing.K900’s Ted Silver is the closest thing to a human watch. The radio station’s morning man and program director has reason to — and does — boast of his timing talent. In an interview earlier this week Silver bragged about his ability to measure time.He looked at his watch at 11:57 during questioning.Three minutes later, in the middle of an answer, he blurted out, “.by the way it is 12 o’clock.” A quick rolling up of the sleeve proved him right. As a DJ, Silver lives by the clock.K900 announcers follow circular programming charts which represent hours of the day.The hours are divided into slices of a pie which indicate when to play a Canadian Content song, a commercial, or when to speak. While years of following such formats have given Silver an inner timing device, on occasion it has gone haywire.WELL, IT’S BACK TO BED Silver’s weekdays show begins at 6 a.m., and once or twice a year he is late.“It usually happens just after I have boasted how I am never late,” Silver said.Of course there is the other end of the spectrum. One morning Silver woke up thinking to himself, “Gee, I’m tired.” He went through his usual morning routine, but when he arrived at work he discovered it was only 3:30 a.m.It seems his son had wreaked havoc on his alarm clock. On another day, “I got up and dressed and came into work perfectly on time.” As he walked up to the station door he ran into the weekend morning man.Silver was surprised and asked him what he was doing there. The D J was coming in for his shift.Silver had goofed — it was Saturday. As far as life’s most embarrassing on-air moments go, he has had his share of those, some printable, others not.AXIDITH99T98RTHVUTUTUYW8 Some of the tamer gaffes include forgetting people's name on air or flying into the booth and reading wire news stories from the teletype machine that came out garbled. For example : Prince Charles said today thap hem gonix iz axidith99t98rthvututuyw8.Getting oneself out of those situations is no easy feat.Silver has also had to read copy on fire.It seems one of his colleagues had pyromaniac tendencies and had lit his news stories as he was reading.Probably his most embarrassing moments came when he was filling in for a TV news anchor at CKMI, a Quebec City station.Accustomed to a rapid AM radio pace of reading, Silver zipped through a 10-minute news cast in seven minutes.Silver was left with three minutes to kill.“I am sitting there just smiling, because I was told when you finish to smile. After a minute my lips are getting sore, they finally ended up focusing on the station logo (behind him) for the last two minutes.” This among other experiences convinced Silver that radio was his medium. As he says, “now you see why TV is not my bag.” LIKED IT AS A BABE Silver got his start in broadcasting at the tender age of 12.A class trip took him to CFCF’s studio in Montreal during taping. His reaction was simple: “Wow this is for me.” Along with a group of friends, Silver promptly set up a five-watt basement radio station. He continued to work on it through high school. In 1971 Silver got an opportunity to break into professional radio at an English AM station in Quebec City.At the time CFOM had a talk show format with religious programming, before a group of young DJs usurped the program director’s authority, that is.Who says mutiny doesn’t succeed? The young upstarts created the city’s first rock station and for awhile it was the most popular station in town. Those kinds of results aren’t bad considering there weren’t many English listeners. When things are going well you can enjoy a little diversion too.“When we weren’t working together, we were drinking together,” said Silver. That all changed when he got a job at a bigger station in Hamilton. He didn’t feel at home there. So during a vacation in Quebec City in 1974, he caught wind of a job opening at his old station and decided to return.Normally this is a step backwards but as Silver put it “I would have done anything to get out of Hamilton.” Three weeks after returning, the station closed. At this point Silver said to himself, “Well Ted, you’ve made a good career move.” SHORT STINT WITH UNEMPLOYMENT Silver wasn’t in unemployment lines for long, however.Shortly thereafter he joined the CRTS fold.Silver became the morning man, replacing Ron Smith. He added the responsibility of program director in 1977.And as most early risers can testify, he has become a fixture on local radio.Good results in last fall’s biannual Bureau of Broadcast Measurement ratings book have Silver sitting pretty at the K9.Silver is one of those rare persons who likes what he does so much that he says he would do it for free.He is also happy with living in the Townships.“If I could spend the rest of my life here I would, but with the (dwindling) English population.and in this business you never really know.If a good offer was to come up.” yptilWH/Zy, Hkwrr* «*<» <»«•< It the ( \ \ r ** * ** t*> Ted Silver has many important decisions to make in his job. This photo gives you an insight into how some oj them are de Champlain could be considered one of the founders of Canada.Nobody said anything about the Gougou monster. And they skipped over Champlain’s wedding at the age of 43 to a I2-year-old girl after he had promised her parents not to consummate the marriage for another two years.History texts have often contained a picture of a heroic statue of Champlain gazing out over a manicured park. But a new biography by Toronto writer Joe Armstrong leaves us with a portrait that contains far less bronze and much more humanity.“History has no point as a record of the past unless it has mea- ning for the present,” Armstrong said in an interview.“A historian who merely records events or tells stories may be guilty of writing out-of-date newspaper articles.” But Armstrong does tell some pretty good stories. He writes, for instance, that the Gougou monster got Champlain into trouble.A giant female monster said to live on an island in Chaleur Bay along the Gulf of St.Lawrence, Gougou was supposed to make roaring and hissing noises, devour Indians and sailors in a single gulp and be able to smash a three-masted sailing ship Somebody told Champlain about it in 1603 and he believed the story, says Armstrong. At least, he mentioned it in his first travel journal and was ridiculed unmercifully as a result. The incident didn’t help Champlain’s credibility when he sought to lead later expeditions. For those who wonder how he was able to spend so much of his life exploring a new country, Armstrong says Champlain was rich enough not to have to worry about financial problems.A previously unexamined Spanish will in the Public Archives of Canada shows that Champlain inherited a substantial estate near La Rochelle, France, from an uncle who had sailed for the king of Spain. And, Armstrong says, one of the things Champlain’s young wife did during the couple’s years of separation — except for brief visits, he was in Canada and she in Paris for all but four years of their 25-year marriage — was to manage his finances adroitly. They had no children.Armstrong suggests the marriage had been arranged because Champlain needed friends at court after his old commander, King Henri IV, was assassinated. His new father-in-law was Nicolas Boulle, secretary of the king’s chamber. The wedding guests on the bride’s side included the king’s horse doctor and the most popular barber in Paris. The guests on the groom’s side were less distinguished.Armstrong, an economic adviser to the Canadian Council for Native Business in Toronto, is not a professional historian ; he does have, however, a clearer writing style than many academics. He’s particularly good at explaining Champlain’s skill as a map-maker.Armstrong owns a large collection of early Canadian maps, and his first book, From Sea Unto Sea : Art and Discovery Maps of Canada, was a best-seller.Armstrong introduces Champlain as a veteran of France’s religious and civil wars who had also sailed to Mexico with the Spanish fleet before helping explore the coast of New England and Eastern Canada “The European background is important,” Armstrong said.“Too often, Canadian history is presented as starting with somebody walking down a gangplank, as if they had no life before they arrived here.” Champlain, by Joe C.W.Armstrong; Macmillan of Canada, $29.95, 318 pages.Butler is full of Acadian style It has been a long haul for rock singer Breen SAINT JOHN, N.B.(CP) — Whether Edith Butler is at her Montreal home or on the road, she can close her eyes and think of the warm wind rippling off the ocean near her childhood New Brunswick home.“I think of it all the time,” says Butler, a popular Acadian singer.“Acadia is in my soul and my whole body.I have the feeling I’m still living there.” Butler, whose last three albums of old-time, toe-tapping songs went gold, spends most of her time on the road, travelling through English Canada, New England or overseas.Through it all, she retains a close connection with her Acadian roots.“I realize as I travel, this culture is such a beautiful and strong culture,” she says.“It’s so extraordinary that these people have succeeded for centuries in keeping culture without knowing how to read or write. They would just sing and tell the stories to one another.“Maybe it’s the isolation that kept it so nice and pure.” Butler remembers the wide open spaces around Pacquetville, the small Acadian village where she grew up.Her father would take her into the woods to the sawmill he operated to teach her about trees, birds and animals.“I grew up with lots of land,” she says.“Everybody seemed to have 100 acres.I spent my whole childhood running in the woods, running in the fields.” The music, with its pounding rhythms and forest-fire energy, comes naturally for Butler.SANG WITH MOTHER “My mother was the musician.Every night we would gather around the piano and sing with her.” Butler went to Paris in the 1970s and played in smaller halls until she built a huge following. She feels her music helps Parisians forget their past; the bitterness and sorrow of two world wars.“I think what appeals mostly to them is the happiness, the strength, the joie de vivre,” she says.“We want to live.“People there are scared. They don’t laugh easily. So when I go and tell them how happy we are with our life here, they feel secure and they want that life back.” While it is still difficult for a French singer to get much airplay in English Canada, Butler says Canadians and parts of the United States are slowly coming around. She’s also finding more young people, including many children of her original fans, now becoming interested in her music.“My whole career has moved very slowly,” she says.“Maybe that’s why I’m still here.” At one time, Butler didn’t like travelling very much. Now she doesn’t know if she could ever settle down.“I feel the world is my country. And my Acadia, I feel I have it in my heart and my suitcase.I bring it with me everywhere I go.” Entertainment shorts LOS ANGELES (AP) — Actress Gale Storm, who played My Little Margie in the 1950s television show, plans to marry former ABC executivePaul Masterson on April 23.Masterson, president of the Permanent Charities Committee of the Entertainment Industries, and Storm announced their plans Tuesday through spokesman Phil Krie-gler.It will be the second marriage for each.Storm, 56, appeared in My Little Margie on CBS and NBC in the early 1950s and Oh Susanna, which was renamed The Gale Storm Show on CBS, in the late 1950s.ABC acquired the rights to the show in 1959 and kept it on the air until 1960.Storm has four children from her previous marriage.Masterson, whose age was not given, has three.PHILADELPHIA (PA) — Composer Henry Mancini and four music companies dropped a $10,000 copy- By Tom Regan Halifax News HALIFAX (CP) - Michael Breen likes to call his own shots. As one of a growing number of Quebec pop singers making the linguistic jump to English, he wants to make sure his entry is a smooth one.“I worked many years alone,” he said in a recent interview.“And when you work alone, you try and try and nobody’s there to tell you if it’s good or not.“After a couple of years, you say, OK, it’s fine.Doing a mistake from another person is bad; it’s much better when you’re making your own mistakes.” Breen, 30, started playing and singing when he was nine in his native Nicolet. He left home when he was 17 rather than work in the family business. It took him 13 years to record his first English album.“It was frustrating at times, especially when I had to take a day job in Montreal to support myself,” he said.“But I didn’t want to be stuck in a band playing cover tunes for the rest of my life.So I went solo to concentrate on my own material.” Breen won second prize in a national talent search run by Rock Express magazine, but this produced little interest from the big companies.right lawsuit after a tavern agreed to buy a $500 music licence.Mancini, Northridge Music Co., Jerry Leiber Music, Mike Stoller Music and SBK Catalogue Inc.sued The Fun House of Bethlehem last November, accusing the bar of failing to buy a permit to allow local bands to perform popular songs. It wasn't until Tom Berry from Attic Records heard his demo tapes that things began to happen Berry signed Breen and arranged for Pierre Bazinet of Luba fame to produce Breen’s first album The album, called Michael Breen, produced the Top 30 hit.Rain.His new song, How Will I Know, is now being played on most album-oriented radio stations. The success of groups such as The Box and Men Without Hats, francophone groups who sing in English, encouraged Breen to expand beyond singing in French. In fact, Breen says his rock style sounds much better in English than in French.Once this statement would have outraged other Quebec singers, but Breen says the once-political atmosphere of Quebec music has mellowed.“We've proved that we can do something in this way without politics and without people saying to you, ‘Why are you doing that? You can sing in French. Are you doing something wrong?’ I never had this problem. It’s very minor these days.” Breen starts his first major Canadian tour in Halifax this week.Although he toured with The Box in the past, this will be his first solo trip.“I’m really happy and a little nervous. But it’s a good nervous, like an energy. It makes for a good show.” The plaintiffs dropped the suit Tuesday after bar ownersChristo-pher and Tina Kowalski agreed to purchase the $500 licence from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, as required by federal copyright laws.“We didn’t know we had to pay ASCAP to play the music,” Kowalski said.Réservation: 821-7744 Thursday, March 3.8:30 P.M.Salle Maurice 0'Bready oddities Kaleidoscope By RICHARD LONEY Bop by Maxine Chernoff (RANDOM HOUSE): $8.95, 126 pp.Vintage Contemporaries continues to offer economically priced collections of stories by fresh American voices.Maxine Chernoff is a writer whose poems and stories have been featured in magazines such as Paris Review, North American Review, and Partisan Review. Her poetry has won her the Carl Sandburg Award, while her short fiction has been recognized with a P.E.N.Syndicated Fiction Award.Bop, a gathering of twelve short stories, allows Chernoff to display her quicky characters and closely plotted vignettes. The story that lends its title to the collection derives from the sound that a small boy at a beach makes when a Russian immigrant asks the abandoned waif his name.Oleg is fascinated by the throwaway culture of his adopted country, filling souvenir photo albums with zeroxes he makes of all manner of garbage. He delights in quizzing check-out clerks at grocery stores he visits with odd questions such as “What city has the highest ratio of pets to people”, so that he becomes known as “Mr.Know-It-All” to the check-out women.Oleg sends letters to the “Personal View” columns of local newspapers, and he is rereading parts of classic American books such as The Grapes Of Wrath. At the library he befriends a ten year old Chicago girl named Carrie Remm, who takes the Russian home to meet her parents, with hilarious results.Chernoff likes to draw the reader into recognizing the oddities and absurdities of everyday life.Oleg Lum allows the writer to point out some of the peculiarities of American life as observed by a Russian, and in a much sadder story, “De-gan Dying”, it is the death of the owner of a discount chair whare-house which becomes the focus.Degan’s decline is not observed without Chernoff’s eye for oddity, however.Perhaps in her recording of the exaggeratedly convoluted speech of an Indian doctor commenting on Degan’s cardiac arrest, she pushes dialogue past realism into excessive parody: “My name is Dr.Ravishani.I have been tending you.You have had a vascular incident, but you’ll soon be propped up, and we’ll make sure you find solace if you just yield and not remonstrate”.Chernoff’s ear for the dialogue between her young modems is far more accurate as a recording device in the story titled “Don’t Send Poems, Send Money”.The female narrator, Elaine, of this funny story decides she will do her close friend Lori a favour by arranging a blind date for her with one of her husband Peter’s business cohorts. The dinner date turns into a disaster when Peter has an automobile accident on the way to the meeting; the blind date arrives, telling the hostess he is a vegetarian and the elaborate meal can’t be touched; Lori’s sudden arrival sees her dumbfounding Elaine with her disheveled appearance; and it turns out that Peter thinks Mike Larson a first-class jerk, with the dinner party deteriorating until the quartet adjourns to take in a movie.Chernoff’s stories are crowded with details that readers can find familiar, and peopled by characterizations that are holdovers from a fading counterculture The backdrop for them, however, remains an America that can be readily recognized whether the setting is San Francisco, Chicago or the Sonoma Valley.KIDS' BOOK Ringtail by Patricia Sillers.Pictures by Karen Patkau (OXFORD): $12.50.coloured illustrations. The short poems of Patricia Sillers tell the story of Ringtail a playful Racoon who happens to live within the environs of a city in a green ravine.Upon waking in the afternoon.Ringtail encounters many of his fellow creatures-turtles, foxes, deer and birds-with whom he frisks about and makes all manner of surprising discoveries.Karen Patkau’s illustrations appear to be photographs of textured artwork, but they are richly coloured and represent the forest animals quite accurately. As Ringtail exhausts his late daytime activities, he turns to a daring raid on some neighbouring houses to conduct his foraging for food and the usual racoon mischief. An entrance into a kitchen has chaotic results, and the book closes with Ringtail safely back in her hollow oak ready to sleep the day away with her full tummy.Six year olds find the explosively-phrased poems of this book captivating, and one was heard to exclaim that his favourite part was the mess Ringtail made in the kitchen! For young readers the poetry text is kept fairly simple, and the fun-loving racoon gives them lots to talk about.Ringtail is the third book from Karen Patkau, whose One Watermelon Seed (1986) was quite popular with reviewers and young readers alike.RECORD REVIEW Foreigner INSIDE INFORMATION (ATLANTIC-WEA) It’s been just over a decade since ex-Spooky Tooth (a Brit band that had distinguished alumni such as Gary Wright, Chris Stainton and Henry McCulloch, plus Jones) Mick Jones teamed up with some Americans to form Foreigner. The hits for Foreigner and vocalist Lou Gramm have continued apace over the years, and with Inside Information the formula has succeeded in placing “Say You Will” on the visual and audio charts. This particular track carries a haunting similarity to Cutting Crew’s I Just Died In Your Arms Tonight, not only in the chord pattern but in the vocal arrangement, with only a modulation into a major key at the end of the tune to confound the copyright watchdogs. The title track follows the current trend kicked off by the Boesky revelations and the stock market fluctuations already capitalized upon by film (Wall Street) and the glossies (cover stories in the national weeklies on Boesky, Donald Trump and others) to turn some of the language of trading into a pop song.« Not the strongest cut on the record, it was easily passed over for Say You Will as single fare.Other candidates to follow that release could be Out Of The Blue, with its strong, symphonic hook, or A Night To Remember which is a pounding, repetitive-riff track that skirts the thin line between pseudometal and corporate rock that only Foreigner or Journey traverse so delicately.VIDEO SCREENING GARDENS OF STONE (CBS/FOX VIDEO) Platoon and Full Metal Jacket may have used the horrors of combat to make their statements about Vietnam, but Francis Coppola’s Gardens Of Stone uses the US.Army itself to question the role of America in Southeast Asia. From the inside, as it were, the grim reminders of the futility of the war are present every day as Clell Hazard (James Caan) and his troupe of soldiers serve on the burial detail at Arlington National Cemc-tary.Caan and his fellow sergeant Goody Nelson (James Earl Jones) are torn between their love for the U.S.Army exemplified by their efforts to keep the funeral detail in shape, and a wish to get back into combat in Nam.Caan is a grizzled Korean vet whose real dilemma begins when the son of one of his comrades in arms arrives at the Arlington posting, eager to move out of what he sees as demeaning, dispiriting work, and get into Officer Candidate School. As a second generation army kid, Jackie Willow (D.B.Sweeney) sees the only role of the soldier as being where the action is.Caan and Jones are jaded and demoralized by all of the killing and the film juxtaposes these opposed viewpoints with some convincing characterizations and believable acting.Even the sub plots plumb and same depths, as Caan’s relationship with Samantha Davis (Angelica Huston) reveals that she is an actively crusading peacenik, employed by the liberal bastion The Washington Post as a newspaperwoman.Jackie Willow’s courting of Rachel Field (Mary Stuart Masterson) brings him face to face with her father, the elitist Colonel Field, as the thematic chords of this film are struck over and over. While the ending of this plot is completely predictable, Coppola makes the getting there definitely worth it with his careful plotting and the drama played out by his cast.(VIDEO AVAILABLE AT LE CLUB VIDEO, QUEEN STREET, LENNOXVILLE; AND AT TREIZIEME AVENUE, SHERBROOKE.) others Roger Brown , in keeping with the long tradition of artists who collect, poses at home in Chicago with shelves of his booty.! :W S*: By Sidney Lawrence SMITHSONIAN NEWS SERVICE “When I’m relaxing at home,” says Chicago atist Roger Brown, “I don’t necessarily want to surround myself with my own art.I already know what that’s about— it’s right here in my head.On a day-to-day basis, to live with, it’s the other things that interest me.” Those “things” include — in every corner and along every wall of Brown’s storefront studio-residence — African masks, New Guinea effigy figures, toys from the 1930s, a plaster bust of Elvis, Hopi Indian kachina dolls, wood farm implements, a guitar made of Styrofoam and plastic flowers, Japanese woodblock prints, Persian miniatures, a tin cupola from a 19th-century schoolhouse, paintings by his Chicago artist-friends, "outsider art” by contemporary folk artists and scores of other treasures.“There is an intensity, a specialness to these objects,” says Brown, surveying the collection.“It has something to do with the maker’s need to have made it.I love having them around.” The 45-year-old Brown, whose own paintings and painted constructions are currently in a retrospective at the Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C., follows a centuries-old tradition of artists who collect.Within that tradition are often intriguing mixes of styles, possessions and personalities. The 17th-century Baroque master Peter Paul Rubens, for instance, crafting an environment as opulent and elegant as his paintings, filled his large house in Antwerp with globes, books, anti- que medals, precious stones, classical sculptures and some 300 paintings by Flemish and Dutch artists.Rembrandt van Rijn, spurred by a more basic need, scoured fairs and bazaars for exotic costumes, silks and brocades to use as props for his paintings. The Middle Eastern look and shimmering richness of these acquisitions both suited Rembrandt’s style and added credence and mystery to biblical scenes and self-portraits.In the 19th century, Bertel Thorvaldsen, a Scandinavian sculptor working in Rome, amassed an astounding 11,000 items, ranging from Egyptian, Greek and Etruscan artifacts to paintings in the then-fashionable Neoclassical style.Frederick Edwin Church, the well-traveled American landscape painter who lived on the Hudson River, filled his Victorian mansion with islamic objects and decoration, as did Sir Frederick Leighton, a prominent London academic painter and “Orientalist.” At the dawn of the modern era, the late 1800s, the flatness, refinement and simplicity of Japanese art enriched and even transformed the paintings of several Impressionists and Post-Impressionists who collected it.Mary Cassatt, Edgar Degas, Paul Gaugin, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Vincent Van Gogh and James Abbott McNeill Whistler — all felt passionately about Japanese prints.Later, the evocative, often brutal forms of African and Oceanic Sculpture collected by Pablo Picasso and other young avant-gardists helped spawn at least two key styles of early Modernism, Expressionism and Cubism. In our own century, Charles Sheeler.the American precisionist of the 1920s, surrounded himself with Shaker furniture; Joseph Cor- nell lived in a New York house overflowing with ephemera and small, found objects that he used to make his curious box constructions, and Philip Pearlstein, the contemporary painter of sharply volumetric realist nudes, has owned classical Greek and Roman sculptures since the 1960s.“Artists collect with a precise inspirational purpose,” American painter-collector William Copley told an interviewer several years ago, “more fetishistically but with a greater sense of unity than (others), never for status.or to impress others. The urge to collect art is part of the urge to create art.” Brown, who started collecting at flea markets on Chicago’s Maxwell Street 20 years ago, concurs.“I like to live with objects that have some connection with what I’m doing in the studio,” he says.Naive and folk artists attract him “because they’ve learned nothing about the history of Western art. They structure space the way the Italian medieval painters did and see the world in plain and simple terms.” Brown’s paintings, which use unambiguous images, often interpret events reported on television news and in newspaper headlines."Thought, care, concern, a good design sensibility — these qualities can show up equally in an old tin toy, a 1930s comic strip or Hokosai print,” Brown says, “and that’s something to admire.” Brown’s collection includes these objects and many others that he has found cheaply, and often unexpectedly, in unlikely locations. On an excursion to a London flea market in 1970, for instance, Brown came across a Chinese textile that was “particularly beautiful and cost practically nothing,” he says. The artist spent many hours studying its sewn-together, scalloped composition.“It was incredible to see how this relatively simple textile could suggest waves, clouds, hills — all kinds of things,” Brown says.“Since buying this piece.I’ve used many of the ideas it introduced to me in my own painting, particularly the landscapes.I guess you could say that textile has been one of my influences.” Brown’s enthusiasm for anonymous, untrained art is shared by other Chicago artists — Don Baum, Gladys Nilsson, Jim Nutt, Ed Paschke, Barbara Rossi, Ray Yoshida and Karl Wirsum among them. Each has a distinctive collection. Most began collecting 20 or more years ago while studying at the Art Institute of Chicago. They still make the trek to fairs, flea markets and antique gatherings where “trash treasures” can be found. To supplement what couldn’t be carrie dhome, each artist also looked carefully at other visual stimuli offered by Chicago — among them, storefront displays and roadside architecture, Indian artifacts at the Field Museum of Natural History and pre-Renaissance Italian painting at the Art Institute. The city’s more adventurous art collectors, meanwhile, caught the artists’ enthusiasm for kitsch, folk and primitive art. They began supplementing their holdings of works by European Surrealist and paintings by Jean Dubuffet — one of the original champions of outsider art — with art by the “untrained.” The collectors also began to buy works by Brown and his colleagues — whose brash, inflammatory narratives soon earned them the label “Imagists” — thus giving local artists the serious attention rarely offered them before. In Brown’s house, friends' works are displayed alongside everything else, and it is often hard to tell the difference between trained and untrained artist. The “look” is definitely exuberant, handcrafted, often disarmingly straightforward, perhaps reflecting something of the city outside.“Collecting goes along with developing a sensibility,” Brown says, echoing the sentiment of most artists, past and present.“It makes your environment pleasant, but it also has to have a connection with what you’re doing.” In 1908 Picasso was photographed in his Paris studio amid African and Oceanic sculpture placed on the table and wall respectively.* i 3#* 8—TOWNSHIPS WEEK—FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 12.1988 WHAT’S ON Notes Dance events are few and far between in these parts. This weekend gives us all a chance to see one of them. The Sursaut dance company is performing Les Etats d'Anne at the Alfred Desrochers hall at the Sherbrooke CEGEP.If the company has its way, there will be plenty more dancing for all Townshippers to see.The following is taken from an article that appeared in Townships Week two weeks ago.The Sursaut dance company of Sherbrooke is trying to change the lack of performances in the area. The four-year-old contempory dance troupe is trying to expand its market in the Townships.Sursaut's Artistic Director Francine Châteauvert says the problem is that dance is not “accessible” to the people of this region.Events come here infrequently and they do not stay long.Performances are rare as Sursaut and a modern dance company called Axile are the only two local troupes.Occasionally companies come from outside the region but they don’t stay long. The answer says Châteauvert, is to build up an audience like the theatres; slowly and patiently but steadily.“The more dance we have here, the more it will be acceptable,” says Châteauvert, a Scotstown resident.“That is why we think it is important to do it.” At a press conference a couple of weeks ago the company announced it will perform Les Etats d’Anne at the salle Alfred Desrochers at the Sherbrooke CEGEP Feb.11-13.It is choreographed by Châteuavert and the music is composed by Michel Côté.Theatre fans should remember Côté as the musician for Théâtre du Sang Neufs summer production Les Célébrations.Les Etats d ’Anne is about two women.A real woman and the person she feels she is, are danced by Guylaine Bérubé and Châteauvert respectively. The dancing focuses on the woman expressing her emotions through two dancers.Adam Dymburt's (artistic consultant and dancer) imput is in acrobatics.Having studied and taught at the National Circus School in Montreal, Dymburt says he sees himself “as more of an acrobatic than a dancer.” He says Les Etats d’Anne is full of movement and classified it as “energetic".Dymburt believes audiences should also be enthralled, because “I think people will see themselves in these situations.” The show starts at 8:30 on Friday and Saturday night.Tickets are going for $8 (adults) and $4 (students).Judging by their press conference, it looks like the performances should be lively.Conductor André Jutras will lead the Sherbrooke Symphony Orchestra as they perform at the University of Sherbrooke this weekend.s Music By Jack Branswell It never rains it pours.Last week there wasn’t much happening and this week there is loads. As mentioned in last week’s section of this column the dubbing.Craig Pearson had an editorial on it Tuesday, Feb.9.Friday, Feb.5 there was an article about Alliance Quebec’s stand on the issue if you want to learn more about the new cinema act.Briefly, the new act means French copies of English films will have to be introduced at the same time as the English movies.Presently there is a 60-day period of grace.Traditionally, English films have come to this region because the French version has not been available as quickly. With two versions released at the same time, local theatres will pick the French version first, to please the majority francophone population despite the fact many bilingual francophones prefer to see the movie in its original version. This means that many non-American front run films will never come to the province in either language because it will be too costly for distributors.Supposedly one of the government's reasons for doing this was in the hope the films would be dubbed here — meaning it would create jobs for Quebecers. What seems more likely is that they will be dubbed in France, because there is a much larger market for dubbed American films there than there is here.If that happens, films will not make it back here for quite sometimes — perhaps as long as six months. What that means is that you might as well invest in a good VCR because by the time the movies come here they will already be out in video. There is something you can do.Why not write a letter or 8000 to Lise Bacon, the minister of cultural affairs. This is her baby, and she is the lady to write to or talk to.1 will stop short of suggesting to dump all your garbage on the front steps of the National Assembly — as in a WKRP episode — but a few thousand letters might get some reply.Remember nothing changes until enough noise is made.I have located Lise Bacon’s address.I am sure she would love to hear from you all. Here it is : LISE BACON, CULTURAL AFFAIRS MINISTER, 225 Grande ALLÉE EST, BLOCK “A”, 1ST FLOOR, QUEBEC, QUEBEC, GIR 5G5.By the way her phone number is (418) 643-2110.With that said and (hopefully) done, here are this week’s movies. At the Cinéma Princess in Cowansville Charlie Sheen, papa Martin Sheen, Michael Douglas, and Daryl Hannah star in Wall Street.I saw this film last weekend and enjoyed it.Douglas is a standout as a scum-bag, money-grubbing stock speculator. The man turns in a truly great performance as Gordon Gekko. You will remember him from Fatal Attraction.Romancing the Stone, Jewel of the Nile among other films. As good as he was in all these, he shows a new depth of talent in Wall Street. The movie is decent, maybe even good, but Douglas steals the show as the slimy business man.If you can get to see this one, then do.The other movie in the double feature is The Princess Bride.Billy Crystal and André the Gaint star in this cult-fantasy.Rob Reiner, “Meathead" from All in the Family, is the director of this and he has a good reputation for comedy. You’ll have to get the times for both of these films. That can be done by calling (514) 263-1222.Now at Merrill’s in Newport, Wall Street can also be seen at 6:55 and 9:10 during the weekend with matinees at 1:45.For Keeps, which was recently in Sherbrooke, stars brat-packer Molly Ringwald. She is a teenager who gets pregnant and decides to keep the baby.Somehow this film seems to treat a rather serious subject a little too lightly. It plays at 7:10 and 9:20 on the weekends with a matinee at 1:55.During the week it runs at 7:20.The final movie is Action Jackson. If memory serves me correctly, it stars Chuck Norris, of Missing in Action fame.I do believe this movie is based on the Gl-Joe type action figure.Remember the commercial : Action Jackson was his name, bold adventure was his game, think of what you want him to be and suddenly ACTION JACKSON.Boy are TV jingles ever effective. That was from when I was a kid.Anyway, if you want to see this it is on during the week at 7:25.During the weekend nightly showings are at 7:10 and 9:15, with a matinee at 2:00.Happy movie hunting. 10—TOWNSHIPS WEEK—FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 12, 1988 Travel —____ Jtfecora Aussie’s Expo 88 promises to be truck loads of fun There might even
