ever had a musical contest with almost any of his seven band members, they’d make his head spin with their jazzy noodling and likely knock him out with a flurry of flourishes. But it’s hard to imagine any musician today who could match a show like the one he pulled off Monday night at sold-out Maple Leaf Gardens before about 16,000 fans.Sting combined the colorful tones of jazz with black rhythms and catchy pop in a masterful way that proves he is not just an opportunistic pop star doing a little style jumping, he’s one heck of a musi- cian.Sting doesn’t have the instrumental skills of his band members, among them all-star jazz players like saxophonist Branford Marsalis and pianist Kenny Kirkland. But he can reach that great mass out there that doesn’t care about Miles Davis or 7-4 time.It just likes a nice melody to sing along with.MASTER’S VOICE The former singer and bassist in the Police also has a sexual stage presence—like a long-haired male model in a padded-shoulder smoking jacket — and a dry, sandpaper voice that’s as distinctive as any in music today.Sting suceeds where so many jazz-rock fusion players have failed because his pop-jazz hybrid doesn’t just prop up virtuoso grandstanding. It’s structured pop using jazz trimmings to bring in some different moods, fresher colors and a new perspective. For Monday night’s show, he played nearly every song from his latest Top 20 album, Nothing Like the Sun, and visited nearly every corner of the stage to the screams of young female fans even if it meant stealing the spotlight from a soloist. He played simple but tasty chords on acoustic guitar and occasional synthesizer.Although he began the show with uptempo songs like The Lazarus Heart and We’U Be Together, the band didn’t hit its stride until the fourth number, Legal Alien. On the next tune.Rock Steady, the bass and drums locked into a flowing groove that converted the floor of the Gardens into a swaying mass of upraised arms and gyrating bodies.GARDENS ROAR And throughout the night, the Gardens reverberated as the crowd sang along, particularly on If You Love Someone, Set Them Free.It turned into a defeaning roar during his Brazilian-flavored encore of Roxanne, the first Police hit.The crowd also responded enthusiastically to a long, fiery piano solo by Kirkland during a medley of Bring on the Night — When the World is Running Down.Although Sting’s songs continue to probe political topics, he has stopped preaching. One of the few hints of political commentary came during They Dance Alone, when video screens showed Sting on stage in Buenos Aires last December with mothers whose children had disappeared during the Argentine military dictatorship. The Toronto show was Sting’s last Canadian concert on a tour which had previously hit Quebec City, Ottawa and Montreal.P.E.I.artistic director lonely after Elvis tour is shelved CHARLOTTETOWN (CP) —The Charlottetown Festival tried to export Elvis and, to Canadian theatre goers, that must have seemed a bit like Island potato farmers packa ging pineapples. So it’s back to the basics, and a Canadian mini-tour of — you guessed it — Anne of Green Gables. Are You Lonesome Tonight?, a highly successful 1987 Charlottetown Festival production based on the life of Elvis Presley, was well into rehearsals for a Canadian tour beginning this spring. The show was as controversial as it was successful, mainly because of some raunchy four-letter dialogue that may have been fit for The King but didn’t blend well with the Festival’s image as family entertainment. But poor ticket sales, especially in the west, pulled the plug on the tour, and the lights went out before they had a chance to come on.Walter Learning, the Festival’s artistic director, couldn’t have been more shocked if someone had walked on his blue suede shoes.Learning said the failure of the planned Are You Lonesome Tonight?tour represented “the first show that ever closed on me before it opened.” He said the experience shocked many of those involved and has been a souce of much pain.NEWS A SHOCK “These have been very stressful days for the cast and crew.it was a great shock for all of us.” On the bright side, he said the canning of Elvis won’t be cruel to the Festival coffers. The tour promoters, Sam Cesser and Donald K.Donald Productions, will be absorbing the estimated $100,000 loss, which includes cast, crew, production staff and rehearsal time. And the show isn’t dead on its home stage. Are You Lonesome Tonight is again expected to be the big draw along with the perennial Anne of Green Gables at next summer’s Charlotttown Festival.TORONTO (CP) — Moonstruck, the hit comedy directed by Cana-dianNorman Jewison, will be screened Sunday at the Berlin International Film Festival. The film, a U.S.production starring Cher and Nicolas Cage, is entered in several categories, it was announced Tuesday.Moonstruck will be shown again Monday at the festival, which began Feb.12 and continues until next Tuesday.Jewison, a Toronto native, will attend the festival.Seven Canadian films are entered in the competition.MONTREAL (CP) — The curtain at the Place des Arts failed to rise Tuesday night, leaving opera-goers, expecting a performance of Bizet’s Carmen, no choice but to leave. The show did not go on.After several hours of negotiations, management representatives thought they had an agreement in principle with 75 striking stage technicians.Curtain time was postponed for 30 minutes to give the technicians a chance to vote on the pact. But the The cancellation of the tour won’t affect the show’s expected continuation at this summer’s Charlottetown Festival.Learning dismissed suggestions that the production didn’t sell because public interest in Elvis Presley has been exhausted, and he wouldn’t blame the tour's public relations people either. He also declined comment on suggestions that the producers moved too fast to shut down the tour, not giving ticket sales a chance to pick up.Instead, he talked of the positive aspects of Are You Lonesome Tonight?, and proposals to at least take the show to Toronto.Since the cancellation was announced, several other promoters and producers have come forward and expressed an interest in staging the show, he said, including the Toronto producers of the highly successful Cats.Learning said that interest could technicians, on strike since Monday, decided they needed more time and are to meet again today. At 7:45 p.m., with patrons waiting in their seats, management cancelled the performance. Here are the they opted to go through with a planned rehearsal.“We did the show with Leon (Leon Pownal, who plays Elvis as an older performer) and with his understudy Frank (MacKay) and with the new songs and it was fantastic,” beamed Learning.“It’s just so much better than last year’s show. It’s superior kick-ass rock’n’roll.” Whether Elvis makes it to Ontario remains to be seen. But Anne, the bubbly, freckle-face redhead who has delighted generations of Islanders, already has her bags packed.Learning said that negotiations are almost finished for Ontario tour dates in Windsor, Hamilton and Kitchener for Anne of Green Gables, and that further negotiations are under way for dates in Ottawa.Five dates on that tour have already been sold out, he said.Learning said this tour, which begins the second week of April, will absorb a number of the cast members of Are You Lonesome Tonight, left without work due to the cancellation of the Elvis tour.10 (10) Weaveworld — Barker NON-FICTION 1 Jack Branswell SHERBROOKE — First it was Paul Henderson.Next came Mike Bossy, and then Wayne Gretzky. When Paul Henderson scored the winning goal in the Summit Series in 1972 against the Soviets in the eighth and final game the nation rejoiced.Shortly after there were thousands of young Paul Hendersons. It was a vicarious experience. The “rink rats” then proceeded to mimic that same goal time after time in their backyards or on the rink, never tiring of the euphoria.More recently this country has produced many young Wayne Gretzky clones.Life After Hockey comes to Bishop’s next Wednesday and Thursday at 8:30 both days. The play is all about scoring ‘the big goal.’ The hero, “Rink Rat” Brown, is a frustrated hockey player, who has convinced himself that he and not Mike Bossy scored the overtime goal that won the Canada Cup in 1984.The play was created by Kenneth Brown and it is his alter ego— played by Dwight McFee — that the audience meets when they walk in.In the one-man play, McFee recounts his past glory — in true frustrated jock style — leading up to scoring ‘the big goal.’ While at first glance this acclaimed play may seem little more than a farce, it does reveal a side of Canadian culture.Orginally from Poland, McFee’s father came to Canada to play semi-pro hockey with the Toledo Mud Hens, the same team the legendary Gordie Howe played for.Growing up in Sault Ste.Marie— birth place to hockey’s Esposito brothers — McFee said the sport “was the way you got out of town.” In a phone interview from Thunder Bay where he was performing eight shows a week, McFee compared his home toen to Harlem; sports is the way out.He played goalie as a teenager but those were in the pre-mask days and after two broken eye sockets and a broken nose, McFee decided to retire while he still had a face.As he put it, “I got awfully scared at 14 and quit hockey.” The next time he went out, a while later, he was hit in the head, so he packed away his skates again. But true to his hockey instincts he had the desire to play again. At age 37, McFee did just that. This summer he worked out with former NHL goalie Duck Wilson as research for another one-man play about a frustrated goalie called Stopper. But then the option to do Life After Hockey came up.And who could refuse sharing stage with taped messages of hockey guru Wayne Gretzky.“It is the play I have always wanted to do,” says McFee.“It is the perfect play.It is senti- mental and warm.I have played a lot of weird guys and he (“Rink Rat” Brown) is normal.“If you are at all interested in hockey, then you get to score the goal you always wanted to score.” Continuing the sales pitch he added, “and women get to laugh at their husbands." Mcfee says the play gives women the chance to finally understand their husband’s fixation with old sports memories.McFee likes doing the play, “because I don’t get to do comedy very often.I end up playing the ‘So long Mickey’ kind of stuff.” During the winter months he performs for the stage and during the spring and summer he does work for film and televison. He has appeared on such shows as MacGy-ver, Wise Guy, The Beachcombers, Danger Bay, as well as a role in Burt Reynold’s Malone.Local theatre fans may recall him from Bishop’s Jitters. He and Bishop drama professor Greg Tuck are old schoolmates.Tuck brought him in for the performance as well as to help teach.Coming to the Cenntennial gives him the added bonus of being able to see Tuck and George Rideout, another drama professor. It is also what he describes as “probably the last time I will ever tour small towns.” This he will miss.He says in big cities people are too “jaded.” “You’ve got to be with the real people.” Singing Lee goes back to theatre NASHVILLE, Tenn.(AP) — For timeless singer Brenda Lee, the dilemma is not what to sing but what to leave out. With a career spanning more than 30 years, she finds it impossible to sing all her hit songs in one concert.“I do three medleys and still have to leave out a bunch,” the 43-year-old performer says.“I’d be up there three hours if I sang them all.” Lee’s career has produced record sales of about 100 million.“It feels pretty good,” she says.“It’s kind of unbelievable in a way.But it feels great.” After 12 million-selling single records and performances in 52 foreign nations, she embarks on another career milestone this year. She will appear in a musical called Music! Music! Music! at Opryland U.S.A.in Nashville. It’s a first step that she hopes will lead to Broadway.Earlier in her career, Lee did summer stock in The Wizard of Oz and Bye, Bye Birdie.“It’s always been in the back of my mind,” she says about the yearning for the New York stage.“But I don’t know if it ever will come about.” The Nashville production will pose a new challenge for the entertainer who earned $35 for her first performance in 1955 and later sang for the queen of England.“It will give me a chance to do some different things.I thought I’d fit into it well.It will give me a chance to spread my wings a little.” Lee will be seen this spring in a musical production called Shake, Rattle and Roll on the Public Broadcasting Service. She recently appeared in a similar show, Legendary Ladies, on cable TV’s Ci-nemax.Her rollicking Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree just enjoyed another holiday season and now has sold more than six million copies.“It feels a little strange when I sing it in July, but that’s all right.” Only I’m Sorry has more sales, 10 million.CINtMAS ClNEPLEX ODEON \ Dwight McFee.‘l end up playing the 'So long Mickey' kind of stuff.’ / GET MOONSTRUCK! \ “I’m Sorry has a special place because I believed in it so long before I recorded it.But I liked all of the songs. It bothers me to leave them out (in concert) because the people want to hear certain ones.If they yell out a request, I stop and do it and let the show go longer if I can.” Lee remains passionate about performing.“Keeping up your zest for singing is not hard. It’s everything else — getting there and the travel — all the stuff that goes into it.Singing is definitely the easy part.“I want to keep doing it because I love the business and I know how to do it.I’ve lasted because of the people who’ve bought the records and supported me and because of the DJ’s who’ve played my records.” the Savent mi the Rainbow I Weekdays: 7:00 - 9:00 p m Weekend: 1:00 - 3:00 - 5:00 - 7:00 ¦ 9:00 p.m.CINEMA CAPITOL SM?HBROOKF ?FOUR STARS! TOWNSHIPS WEEK—FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 19, 1988—5 Book doesn’t need a guarantee, it’s a good read Kaleidoscope By RICHARD LONEY OOUIV YOU INC !.„""4 : Thai Horse by William Diehl (RANDOM HOUSE): $27.75 , 451 pp.“Read it.Love it.Or your money back.” So reads the advertising accompanying a full page ad for this Villard Books release in the pages of the JVew York Times Book Review, recently. There are a couple of hundred clunkers that have been published in the past few years that could have benefited from such grandiose claims for their wares, but fortunately Thai Horse has no need for the hype or the guarantee.William Diehl’s previous two novels, Chameleon or Hooligans, or even the earlier Sharkey’s Machine, offered no clear indications that this writer was capable of gripping readers with the kind of thundering good story he provides in Thai Horse. This one just happens to be equipped with most of the qualities that readers of escapist fiction demand. At the heart of Diehl's book is a deep mystery involving the meaning of the book’s title, and the whereabouts of a man named Murphy Cody, a naval flying officer who gets gunned down in the opening chapter of the novel in the year 1972, who is reportedly still alive somewhere in the Vietnam area.As the book opens, Christian Hatcher, who had been known as the Shadow Warrior in ‘Nam, because of his ruthless activities for “The Company”, is living a life of ease off the coast of Georgia. His former “control”, Harry Sloan, recruits Hatcher to track down the mysterious Cody, or at least learn whether he really died when his twin-engine OV-IO went down in 1972.The impetus for finding proof positive that Cody is dead or alive comes from the news that his father, known as Buffalo Bill Cody, a General in the U.S.Army, is dying of cancer and wishes to contact his son one final time before death. So far, Thai Horse sounds like the myriad Robert Ludlum-clone books that flood the market, but Diehl’s story branches out in many directions, firmly hooking the reader with his narrative power and the insertion of all kinds of lore about such far-flung locales as NOVEL Author of CNAMELEQN and HOOLIGANS Central America, coastal Georgia, Thailand and its capital Bangkok, Hong Kong, and the rivers used to ferry supplies of heroin from the poppy growing mountains of remote southeast asia to the port cities of this region.Diehl’s book continues to delight, whether he is writing about a savage political prison in the jungles of Central America, or a modern equivalent of the opium den located in Bangkok. The action never flags for a moment, as Hatcher moves back into the country where his legendary bravery earned him the title of “Occhi di Sassi”, Man With Stone Eyes.Hatcher’s search for his Naval Academy buddy Murphy Cody stirs up old animosities, as the river pirates led by Tollie Fong learn that the hated American is back in their midst.Diehl introduces us to a wonderful array of realistic characters along the way, whether it is the Viet survivors who have set up an old western type saloon in Bangkok, or the description of “the Bird”, an engenious museum robber whose aerial stunts allow him to defeat the sensory alarms that guard priceless art treasures that he rips off with impunity. The kick-boxing Sy, a Thai taxi-driver who befriends Hatcher, or China Cohen, a Bostonian who is the undisputed crime boss of the Orient, are but two examples of the crowded cast that keeps Thai Horse moving along at breakneck speed.Diehl probably uses up enough genuinely interesting and absorbing material to fuel four or five books with this long, involved book which has a Chinese box effect to its plot.Christian Hatcher is one of those inscrutable heroes in the James Bond/Clint Eastwood mode who says little, but can spring into action with deadly results. The reader of Thai Horse is never allowed to become complacent about the plot’s next twist; predicting the next turn of events is impossible, thanks to the clever writing of this veteran writer of mysteries who will undoubtedly be greeted with widespread recognition on the strength of this suspenseful, action-packed tale of Viet vets, drugs, Chinese warlords, missing persons and violent death in the Orient.RECORD REVIEWS Jesse Colin Young The Highway Is For Heroes (ATTIC-A&M) If the nineties go about discovering the music of the seventies with anything like the clamour set off by the eighties resurrecting the Beatles, then the ouevre of Jesse Colin Young will have pride of place.Young’s position as both solo artist and driving force in the great quartet The Youngbloods is recalled with the release of an album of new music recorded at Jesse’s Owl Mountain Studios, in Inverness, California. The Highway is For Heroes is a moody, thought-provoking album that is built upon the incredibly tight acoustic guitar interplay between Young and Jerry Cortez, with whom he has been touring since the revised version of The Youngbloods faded in 1985.Extended in length, tracks such as the title song, composed with Wendy Waldman, and the beautiful Before You Came present Jesse’s distinctive tenor vocal laid softly against changing guitar and percussion rhythms.Fans of J.C.who recall his earliest work will find this a particularly satisfying, while endlessly nostalgic, album, chock full as it is of guitar artistry and evocative vocals.Nostalgia plays a big role in some of the themes of Jesse’s songs as well, in particular in the achingly introspective song Young Girls.Of interest as well is the use of alto sax and clarinet, which both blend well with Jesse Colin’s fondness for falsetto vocals.Centrepiece on the album must be the song co-written with keyboard ace Bill Cuomo, called The Master, which explores the phenomenon of master/slave relationships from a variety of perspectives.Other highlights are the swaying track Do It Slow and T-Bone Shuffle, an extended jam with Cortez which is a reminder of the kinds of noodling that Young, Banana and Jerry Corbitt used to delight audiences with when they performed as The Youngbloods.GOOD MORNING, VIETNAM SOUNDTRACK (A&M) If the hilarious intros by Robin Williams on this soundtrack are any indication of the comedy to be found in the film Good Morning, Vietnam then viewers are certainly justified in making this one the leading moneymaker currently.Williams, playing the eccentric dee-jay Adrian Cronauer, brings his spontaneous, off-the-wall humour to bear on the absurdities of the Vietnam experience, ad-libbing intros to the nostalgia cuts here with searing wit and comic insight. On these, Williams as Cronauer shifts into his glib comic characterizations with ease, doing interviews with various army personnel, such as the artillery soldier, Bob Fribber, whose request is for “anything, just play it loud will you?”, shouted in the characteristic loud voice of the near-deaf! The song that follows is The Searchers doing Sugar and Spice Other voices of Williams’s include Corner Pyle, Lyndon B.Johnson explaining why he named his daughter Linda Byrd, and Robin’s version of the black man, Roosevelt Lee doing the weather: "Roosevelt, how’s the weather?‘You got a window, open it!”’.Equally hilarious is Mr.Leo, the previous-voiced fagotty purveyor of fashion for the Viet Cong: “they’re wearing black.I say you can fight in the jungle in it and at night put on some pearls and you’re ready for formal wear. This says it all to me; it’s kind of a Hefner thing; they’re dressed in pyjamas, it’s casual; it says I can fight or I can just lay around!” The songs in the film are chosen from early 1965, to coincide with the feeling the producers and writers of the movie wanted to convey, “that the dream was to make Good Morning, Vietnam’ as a metaphor for the war.In early 1965, no one was taking Vietnam situation very seriously, but by the end of the year, the number of troops had increased by the thousands.1965 was the year that Jekyll became Hyde”.Some of the tunes, such as the Beach Boys’ I Get Around pre-date the film’s time, while the Vogues’ Five O’clock World did not peak on the hit parade until January of 1966, but most of the tracks, such as Game of Love by Wayne Fontana & The Mindbenders, Liar, Liar by the Castaways, and James Brown’s I Got You, managed to make it onto 1965 playlists. In the light of the fact that the Vietnam War has been called the black man’s war, it is only appropriate that the movie features songs by Martha Reeves & The Vandellas (Nowhere To Run), the Marveletts (Danger Heartbreak Ahead), the James Brown shouter, and Louis Armstrong’s What A Wonderful World. While the songs are representative of the 1965 time period, more or less, it is almost inconceivable that the producers of such a movie would not include music by the Stones and Creedance, whose melodies could often be picked up on newscasts at the time of the war, filtering in over the terrible sounds of shells and gunfire.Authentic or not.Good Morning, Vietnam will, with its massive popularity, push this album into mega sales very quickly.GOOD MORNING, VIETNAM 6—TOWNSHIPS WEEK—FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 19, 1988 Cowboys get no respect, so says Sky Floyd Drew By Russ Niles Vernon News VERNON, B.C.(CP) — Sky Floyd Drew says Canadian cowboys are “the toughest guys in the world” and they deserve some respect. The 60-year-old ranch hand, trick roper and songwriter is taking a one-man show through the British Columbia Interior next month to herald the role cowboys have played in the Canadian West.Drew received $8,000 from the Canada Council to develop his show and take it on the road.“They (the council) wanted me to give the cowboy an art form, give him a speaking voice,” says Drew, who was born in Moon Lake in northeastern Alberta.“They recognized the important role the cowboy played in the makeup of the country.” Drew’s performance, due to open in Kelowna, B.C., on March 10, is not simply a wild west show, although it includes rope tricks.“I’m trying to give the cowboy some distinction,” says Drew, who has been in the saddle since 1945 — and tossed out of it more times than he'd like to remember.“If I had a half acre for every j time a bucking horse threw me, I’d have a big enough spread,” the { ranch hand says with a drawl. In the two-hour performance, Drews says he tries to combine facets of cowboy luminaries such as Will Rogers, Gene Autry, Wilf Car-I ter and a character called Powder River Jack Lee, in a rambling combination of music, storytelling and poetry.“It’s all natural and good stuff, I don’t use no sleazy stuff,” he says. And Drew say s he won’t perform in bars or other spots that might detract from his message.Drew says Canadian cowboys endured extreme hardships in helping to tame what was truly the wild west.“I’ve been on cattle drives and I’ve had cold hands and rope burns, but I can’t see myself.,” he muses, his voice trailing off.Drew’s cache of stories, facts and lore about cowboys has been gathered from hands-on experience in a job that has changed little in 100 years.Cowboys tend cattle on Canadian ranches, using the same roping and herding skills that have become romanticized in countless no- vels and movies, he says.Drew, who recently moved to the Vancouver suburb of Coquitlam from the 108 Ranch in the B.C.Cariboo, has worked for most of the big Canadian ranches.“I can still have breakfast with the boys. When I say I'm a cowboy, nobody can argue with me.I’ve been there.” Drew’s skill with a rope won him a place in the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest vertical lasso loop — 22.8 metres — done in 1979 from a tower in Vancouver. The Area's Dining Guide ui sine PIZZAVILLE LENN0XVILLE iCeB âroiB marmites Gédrgpville Enjoy an atmosphere of the past century Refined regional and traditional 4 Breakfast specials *169 t0*199 cuisine Seafood - Charcoal Steaks B.B.Q.Chicken Complete 5 course dinners different every A delightful combination of quality and quantity is yours to enjoy at The Trois Marmites! one of Stéphane Lemire’s pictures (left) in Communimage.Next to it is René Fabi’s with one of the many faces that appear in the book.By Jack Branswell SHERBROOKE — A picture is said to be worth 1000 words. If it was also worth $1000 it would be just ducky for four Sherbrooke-area photographers.Christian Landry, René Fabi, Stéphane Lemire, and Gilles Mercier have just launched Communimage, a telephone and address book complete with 32 photos. The book is the result of a drinking session at a local watering hole. The four had know each other for a while, and on one fateful evening last fall they decided on this project. The ‘photographic four’ found they had similar approaches.Landry said a bond was formed quickly.“We share a common philosophy of photography. We are socially orientated. We think black and white photos can transfer our thoughts best.” Landry, who is a part-time photographer for La Tribune, said the project has worked because “we are the same sort of people.” Each of the four had to come up with their eight best pictures. From them four of each photographer’s were chosen.Landry described the process “as tough, but fair.” The idea for Communimage was decided on because the group wanted, in Landry’s words, “to join the photographic art with a useful medium.” The books are on sale in most book stores in the city, as well as across the province. The books cost $10.Landry said the money wasn’t important, adding it will only be used to fund other photographic projects.“We take pictures for pictures sake.” Communimage features some international photos, but there is high local content. There are no high profile people in this book.Landry explained why; “We used normal people, because we wanted to take pictures of people that reflect the area.” The object was to make the “pictures accessible to people.” Landry described the pictures as “down to earth.” The same holds true for the photographers.“We are not performers,” he added.Gilles Mercier, who runs Daguerre Photo, says the book fea- tures “social elements. There are lots of people within situations, but they are not provoked.” Mercier agreed with Landry’s view on the purpose of the project.“It is is to take the pictures out of the drawer and show people what we can do.” Stéphane Lemire has been a professional photographer for the past 15 years, eight of those with La Tribune. The project has been “stimulating” for him.Photojournalists have to work under what can be the heavy burden of editors. What this means is that there is not always the time to seek a superior shot. The photographic often takes back seat to mass production and static, but safe shots. This can be very frustrating. There is a difference between his regular work and this project. In photojournalism, "we are covering events, with this we get to do it with our feelings.” Landry added that this is refreshing because normally “we depend on authorities. Now we can do what we want.” The book has added meaning for Lemire.“It is important for us.it is stimulating.” He said after a while photographers can get in a rut, and they lose the “feeling (of what it is to take good artistic pictures), and it becomes a tiresome job.” René Fabi says he prefers the spontaneous approach to photography.“I don’t look for a specific image.I just go out with my camera,” and look around. He said he talks to his subjects most of the time, as he finds this puts them at ease.He estimated that about 80 per cent of the time people cooperate.“If they want to cooperate then good, if not than too bad,” he said.As for future plans, the group is looking at having individual posters of their work distributed across the country, as well as negotiating with the city for a pictorial book to be sold in tourist kiosks. There is also a possibility of publishing special Paris and New York supplements.«/fc/c .iil wAf ¦ jM l ."V>» î.” 4f- - Reservation 821-7744 Thunday.March 3, 8:30 P M Salle Maurice 0’Bready Production B Y Caza complaining about not having services. This is fine of course, but the ones that are here have to be supported. For example «isljap's Wmbtrsitp’s Centennial Theatre has a wonderful play coming next week and so far the ticket sales are poor Now watching TV might be a great Canadian past time, but so is hockey.Life After Hockey is a one-man play about a frustrated jock reliving his past glories.“Rink Rat” Brown played by Dwight McFee, is the old hockey nut who entertains the audience. It is also supposed to be a warm and sentimental play.It is highly acclaimed and has played to packed houses across the country, with audiences enjoying it everywhere. In short, it s worthwhile seeing. The problem with poor box ofhce showing is that if events like this aren't supported then organizers will just have to stop bringing them in ’ It seems a little incredible that this show would not be selling better than it is.The message is if you want entertainment then you have to support it when it comes. There is a story on the play and McFee, who was in Jitters here a few years ago, on page three. This column has gotten out of the habit of talking about radio and TV, but sometimes something jumps off the page and it gets mentioned. This weekend the CBC’s Royal Canadian Air Farce is rebroadcasting hightlights from its past 15 years. If you have never listened to the Air Farce now is the time. The show's extremely funny and features everything from political farce to down right debauchery. You can tune in on CBC stero on Saturday at 9:34 a.m., or on the regular network on Sunday at 1:10 p.m.Music On occasion this column has been critized for not paying enough attention to classical music and other forms of music other than rock and country. The sheer volume of venues has dictated that the latter be mentioned first most of the time, but in order to appease all tastes the former sometimes leads. This is one of those times.Pianist Anna Szpilberg, will bring her euphonic sounds to the Centennial them! There are three English movies here. For those of you hard of reading, the message will be repeated.I SAID THERE ARE THREE ENGLISH MOVIES.The Capitol is bringing in a nice family movie called the Serpent and the Rainbow. This can be seen nightly at 7 and 9 with matinees at 1,3, and 5.In case you haven’t figured it out it is a horror film.Wes Craven, the director of Nightmare on Elm Street, is responsible for this baby.Look for voodoo rituals, and probably a few entrails or eye of nute or some such stuff. That’s all I know about it.You see, I don't do horror films. The Carrefour has at least one movie I plan on seeing.Moonstruck stars Cher and Nicholas Cage, from Birdy and Peggy Sue got Married in this highly acclaimed film.It runs nightly at 6:50 and 9, with weekend matinees at 12:25,2:25, and 4:35.Cher, who has blossomed into a fine actress, is an Italian women who falls in love with her f inaeée’s brother— usually not a good idea — and the movie takes off from there.RECORD/GRANT SIMEON Stéphane Lemire is one of four Sherbrooke photographers who got together and collaborated on Communimage, a picture-filled telephone arid address book.See page 3.This is a must see.The Carrefour’s other venue is She’s Having a Baby.Oh, that’s special.Kevin Bacon — no relation to Lise — stars with Elizabeth McGovern.Bacon you might remember was the dancing machine in Footloose. The story line goes something like this.A Chicago couple are having marriage trouble, but everything looks OK when she gets pregant, until.Showtime is 7:25 and 9:30, with weekend matinees at 1:10, 3:15, 5:20.Over at the Cinéma Princess in CowansviUe, I had an awfully difficult time listening to their answering machine. One movie was clear at least. The critics destroyed The Pick-up Artist when it came out.But you might want to throw toast or something else at it yourself. It sounds like another mindless teeny-bopper film.Call (514) 263-1222 for the first film and the times.South of the border in Newport, four movies are on the menu. The Serpent and the Rainbow is also there. This plays at 7:25 during the week and during the weekend at 7:20 and 9 :20 with matinees at 2.This is your last chance to see Wall Street it stars Michael Douglas, Charlie Sheen, Martin Sheen, and Daryl Hannah.Douglas might have made this best performance ever in this, and that is saying a lot.He is a stand out.The movie is not half bad either.Showtime this weekend is at 8:45.It ends on Sunday night, so go see it.The mindless Action Jackson is also there at 7 and 1:50 this weekend with shows during the week at 7:30.The final film is For Keeps. This is Molly Ringwald’s baby, and guess what? She is keeping it.This film is only recomended to the criminally inane. It wouldn’t be so bad if it didn't take such a lighthearted approach to teenage pre-gnacy.This is probably not the most hilarious subject around.Happy hunting !
