“Let’s face it.As far as the police are concerned, the worst thing these men are guilty of is being Indian.” Now, Tadeusz Letarte is as eager as the next guy to root for the underdog and side with the oppressed but he can spot in all this a very cynical manipulation of the media. To treat people differently solely because of their race is racist. To insist on being treated differently solely because of your race is to insist on racism. To then complain of ‘racism’ is a blatant misleading of sympathetic citizens for your own benefit.Individualism is a lonely business. We all like to identify ourselves with a group, to huddle with others who share with us a common bond and it doesn’t matter much if that bond is religion, nationality, language, sexual preference, the color of our skin or the hue of our politics. And we all like to feel superior to those outside our group — to claim pride in our ancestry, our country, our race, religion or language, and to enjoy a certain romantic idealism in enduring real or fancied persecution. That serves to bring us still closer together.UNWASHED But most of us understand that all these distinctions are meaningless in any real sense and whether you are a United Empire Loyalist, a full-blooded Mohawk, a Daughter of the American Revolution or a Son of the Unwashed Pioneers, that doesn’t cover you with angel dust. You can still be an asshole.Reverting to ancient ways may also be great fun but that doesn’t make you cleaner, purer, truer to your nature. In general, our great-grandsires led short and difficult lives — whether in the manor house of the longhouse — raddled with ignorance, superstition and fear, constantly struggling against war, accident, hunger and disease, suffering tapeworms and body lice and suspicious of all those not of our race, religion, language or nationality. It was easier then to despise different people because we knew nothing about them.Wars were easier because our great-grandsires usually died within a few miles of the place where they were born and spent the intervening years surrounded by uncles and aunts and cousins.Today, most of us live among strangers, renting by the month, knowing nothing of our neighbors.“I had a best friend when I was little,” said Birdsong.“We went everywhere together and talked about everything under the sun. Then she became a Catholic and I became a Protestant and there were some things we couldn’t talk about anymore.“Then the Parti Québécois came along and she became a French Canadian Catholic and I became an English Canadian Protestant and there was a lot we couldn’t talk about. When the Referendum came along, she voted ‘Oui’ and I voted ‘Non’ and we haven’t spoken since.“I miss her a lot.” *»* “Heads down,” said Chickenfat.“Season's open.“I look forward to deer season every year,” he said.“With considerable anxiety.” “There’ll be all this high-powered ammunition flying around, you see — first Jim Lawrence will let rip a salvo at the animal rights people, then Merritt Clifton will snipe back at Lawrence while concerned citizens take potshots at both and tragic Walter Freud’s ‘In Memoriam’ picture will appear again like the Ghost of Season’s Past.“A fella who’d been to school told me once that deer don’t really belong in these parts. They’re like weeds, foreign weeds.Used to be all thick forest here and deer like open country where they can browse.Snow piles deep and a deer’s feet and legs are the worst possible design for getting around in deep snow. The only defense they have against predators is their speed and in winter they’re helpless.DEER ARE GOOD “So this fella said they were brought in by the pioneers along with ragweed and dandelions, starlings and sparrows and other pests.Makes sense when you think about it.“But deer are good to see and so much fun to kill that great chunks of money are spent on them every year — for conservation and licenses, boxes of 30-30 and cases of 24, electric socks and nose warmers, 40 ounce bottles of 80 proof.“It seems to me sometimes that animals are taking over the shop.Used to be simple enough — man was given dominion over them all like it says in the Bible.Man was boss because we were the spitting image of God and beasts were — well — beastly.“Wild animals were our enemies — lions and tigers, wolves and grizzly bears, snakes and stuff — and the domesticated ones were our slaves to do with just as wel liked.“We figured we had immortal souls, see, and they didn’t.We had brains and could figure things out and they couldn’t.Homo sapiens, we said. That’s us.“Then Charlie Darwin wrote this book that said we weren’t so special after all — all related in the same family, in fact.We didn’t care much for that idea. Then he said that animals could figure things out, too, and told about this elephant in the zoo that brought floating peanuts within reach by blowing on the water beyond them.“We didn’t care much for that, either, so we figured out that we could make tools and they couldn’t — so there! Then those damn Egyptian vultures were found picking up stones and using them to break open eggs.MUCH DUMBER “Aha!, said we, but we’re the only ones who can make tools! Then these wild chimpanzees were seen shaping sticks to get at termites — and even showing each other how to do it.“Either animals were getting a whole lot smarter or we were getting a good deal dumber.“Then we said we were the only ones who could crack jokes and tell lies but some joker taught gorillas and chimps the American Sign Language and they were cracking jokes and telling lies, too. They cheated, stole, waged war, raped and murdered just like we did.The geneticists figured out a chimpanzee’s genes were 99% identical to ours.“About all we have left these days,” said Chickenfat, “is that animals never do anything just for the money.• “Wanna buy a good shotgun?” FROM THE DIRECTOR OF THE FLY” COMES A NEW KIND OF THRILLER.^Carrefour ,,ESTR|E 3050 bou(.PORTLAND Restaurant & Pub cV'efb» fl FOLKWAYS tux Jr m- '4*7; even inexperienced skiers can handle it.Expo is another run with a meaningful name: in both official languages, Expo is a place to show off.The run has moguls that look like a thousand Volkswagen Beetles buried in snow, and a lift parallels the slope.People sitting on the lift chairs watch the expert skiers, admiring their prowess and snickering at their pratfalls. The mountain has 41 runs and a vertical drop of 650 metres. In the last few years, lift capacity and snowmaking have increased to rival those of smaller resorts. This year, Tremblant has added a highspeed, detachable quadruple chair that runs from bottom to top on the south side.* * FOR YOUR TRAVELLING NEEDS, CONSULT S f ! a Mariann Maryse Johanne Madeleine Nathalie Manager Counsellor Counsellor Counsellor Agent Senrice in 4 Languages (French, English.Spanish, Italian) NEW HOURS: 5:30 p.m.Thursday.Friday, 9:00 a.m.to 9:00 p.m Saturday, the office is closed mÆ CLUB L9J VOYAGES ESCAPADE 121 FRONTENAC ST.SHERBROOKE (819) 563-5344 or (819) 563-4515 Holder of Quebec Licence TOWNSHIPS WEEK—FRIDAY, OCTOBER 28, 1988-11 Nora Joyce: The woman who inspired a genius By Rod Currie The Canadian Press One of the few true things ever said about Nora Joyce was that she was the seif-exiled James Joyce’s “portable Ireland” — his inspiration. But Joyce contemporaries mostpng68things about Nora, the lusty chambermaid from Galway. In their view she was a slovenly near-illiterate who couldn’t cook, learn the language of any of the many countries they lived in, or encourage Joyce.Worse, they said, she never read Ulysses. This is true — a fault she shares with most of the human race, left floundering by the master’s free-flowing, sometimes incomprehensible style.Nora, the wife of a literary giant, didn’t give a damn for the printed word.“Jim should have stuck to singing,” she said. But those who really knew her knew that in performing her duty as she saw it—looking after James Luba: Ukrainian Joyce — she was flawless.BOLD AND LOYAL Now the record has been put straight in Nora: A Biography of Nora Joyce. It’s by Brenda Maddox who paints an engaging portrait of an uninhibited woman living in socially repressive times — she’s bold, full of humor and, most of all, loyal.Ulysses, Maddox says flatly, would not exist without her.Nora Barnacle, tall and with magnificent auburn hair, was 20 and penniless when on the foggy night of Oct.18, 1904, she strode on to a Dublin ferry for England without telling her family or her Finn’s Hotel employer that she was running away with Jim Joyce, the young, self-proclaimed genius.Nora never—through 47 years of an irresolute, often poverty-stricken nomadic life in Europe — thought of Joyce as a genius.Joyce never doubted it, and believed that the world owed him a living because of it.Nora supported him simply because writing was what he wanted to do.Atheist Joyce, Maddox writes, asked Nora to “believe in him instead of God.” She did, up to a point. But it was a fact that no matter where she lived — Trieste, Zurich, Paris, Nice or Rome — she never lost her Iris-hness, her pungent way of talking and thinking, or her roots in the rough-and-ready life of western Ireland. For Joyce, she was his living Ireland and he used her shamelessly, without giving her credit as his model for the full-blooded Molly Bloom in Ulysses and in countless other instances. He even copied her style of writing — which infuriated him — of running all her thoughts together, without punctuation or capitals. He did this most particularly in Molly’s famous soliloquy and in the incredibly tangled Finnegans Wake. When Nora did it, it was called stupid; when Joyce did it, it was revered as his brilliant new stream-of-consciousness technique.with incredible voice TORONTO (CP) — The title of her television special says she’s Between the Earth and Sky, but Canadian pop singer Luba has her feet planted firmly on the ground.Onstage she’s a raunchy rocker in leather and lace who caresses microphone stands and tosses back her sweat-soaked blonde tresses. When the show lights are turned off she becomes shy, applecheeked Luba Kowalchyk, a nice Ukrainian girl from Montreal who wouldn’t dream of making a spec- tacle of herself, She’s so low-key and down-to-earth that the producers of her show — airing Sunday, Oct.30 at 8 p.m.EDT on CBC — thought the singer might not be dramatic enough to sustain an hour-long musical profile.“With Luba, there’s this incredible soul and incredible voice but because she’s so shy it’s tough getting things out of her,” says Don Allan, who directed the show for Toronto-based Cambium Film and Video Productions Ltd.“She’s just a really, really sweet and nice person.” So what do you do when your film subject is so modest and unprepossessing that she risks being boring? You marvel at how such an unspecial person can create such special music.“Abig part of (Luba’s) attraction to fans is that she’s just an ordinary girl,” says Bruce Glawson, co-producer of the show with Arnie Zi-pursky.“They’re really pretty thrilled someone that nice and that genuine can be so successful.” —KIDS CAN SEW Is Here Ages 6 - 12 (Adults also) • Blouses • Skirts • Pants • Jogging Suits • And much more! in ?life, Joyce upstages Nora, although Maddox has made a valiant effort to keep the focus on Nora, whose wit and intelligence sustained the ill-fated family.Their son, Giorgio, who inherited his father’s magnificent voice, was a misfit who ended up an alcoholic.Their troubled daughter, Lucia, spent most of her adult life in mental institutions, a victim of the constant shift from country to country, language to language.Joyce, who waited interminable years for literary recognition of his books, relied mainly on the handouts of others.Principal among these was the ever-loyal Harriet Weaver, a London feminist and free-thinker who settled an enormous amount on him.Edith McCormick, a daughter of John D.Rockefeller, eventually cut off her allowance to Joyce when she discovered her money was sponsoring his carousing and riotous drinking. The more Nora and Joyce had, the more they spent. They loved clothes — Nora was always the tip of fashion — dining out, entertaining and travelling, and they never seemed to worry where their next penny was coming from.As Ernest Hemingway reported, the whole “Celtic crew” of Joyces ate several times a day at a Paris restaurant where Hemingway and his bride could only afford to eat once a week.A FINE COOK However, despite what detractors said, Nora was a splendid cook and an entertaining hostess, and she took naturally to languages. She loved music and opera and read to Joyce and took dictation as his sight failed into blindness, but she rejected his various programs for her self-improvement.The greatest victim of Joyce’s selfishness was his brother Stanislaus, who adored Nora and sacrificed his own life — putting off marriage until middle-age — to support Joyce’s family. In the end, Joyce never said as much as a thank you, indulging his talent for exploiting everyone around him while convinced that he was being persecuted. For all his self-absorption, Joyce, who died at 59, always knew that Nora was his life force and his inspiration, the headstrong Celtic woman who trusted her intuition and her passion. She died in 1951 at age 67.Nora: A Biography of Nora Joyce, by Brenda Maddox.Published by Viking; 589 Is Death’ tackles controversial issue of drugs Julie Christie takes rare television role By Anne Wheeler Academy Award-winning actress Julic Christie has always been afforded the luxury of picking her roles carefully.Rising to fame 25 years ago in such feature films as Darling (her Oscar-winning film) and Dr.Zhivago, Christie makes a rare television appearance this week in a role she finds particularly important.Christie stars as the very determined mother of a young man sentenced to hang for drug trafficking in Malaysia in Dadah Is Death, airing Sunday and Monday.Oct.30 and 31, on CBS.Dadah Is Death is based on the true story of Kevin Barlow (John Poison), a working class youth whose mishaps lead him to a fatal error in judgment.Frustrated, desperate and unable to find work when he is injured in an accident, he meets Geoffrey Chambers (Hugo Weaving), a young man whose affluent lifestyle and seeming success are the result of his involvement in drug trafficking.Barlow agrees to act as a drug courier for Chambers, but their attempt to smuggle heroin out of Malaysia fails, and the two are arrested, tried and sentenced to hang under the country’s new mandatory death penalty for drug trafficking. While her son sits in a hellish prison cell.Barbara Barlow.Kevin’s mother, desperately fights to save her son from the gallows. The family’s limited finances lead her to Karpal Singh (Victor Banerjee), a Malaysian lawyer whose own conscience and disdain for the death penalty require him to plead Kevin’s case in the courts without compensation When their attempts to work within the Malaysian system prove fruitless, Barbara draws on inner strength, as she pursues the case in the court of world opinion, mounting an impassioned campaign to stop the court from proceeding with its judgment.Christie was intrigued by the role of Kevin’s mother for the strength of the JULIE CHRISTIE stars in Dadah Is Death, Sunday and Monday on CBS.character, a rare find, she said, in television movies. She was fascinated by the way Barbara Barlow dealt so readily with public attention, having never been exposed to that kind of pressure before. But her interest in the message goes even further into the actress’ personal efforts."I’m on the board of an organization in Britain called Welfare of Prisoners Overseas,” she said.“It’s not a very popular issue. It’s a difficult issue to get people involved in, and yet it is important, I think, that people involved overseas should not feel abandoned."I think it’s important for foreign prisoners in our country to be supported by some group or other in their own country, so that they have proper interpreters and visits and contact in some way or another with what they understand," she explained.Christie expressed strong views on prisoners held specifically on drug charges "I think in most cases, where people are prosecuted for drugs, the people who are captured are those who are the least involved, who stand to gain the least, and who are doing the least damage, who are pawns,” she said.1 l*W0< The TV l.iMinj: Group.Iix 11:30 (TSN) BODIES IN MOTION (R) 12:00 (TSN) SPORTSDESK The most comprehensive sports DIGEST (R) 4:30 (TSN) HORSE SHOW JUMPING Prescott Grand Prix (R) HARRY HAMLIN plays a charismatic senator who gains national attention when he is wounded in an assassination in Favorite Son, Sunday through Tuesday, Oct.30 through Nov.1, on NBC.Roles give stars different perspectives on politics ‘Favorite Son’ follows major political coverup By Mary Ann Townsend To the three principal performers in Favorite Son, a six-hour political miniseries airing Sunday through Tuesday, Oct.30 through Nov.1, their roles brought different revelations about politics. In Favorite Son, Harry Hamlin stars as a charismatic young senator making an ambitious bid for the White House.Having studied up on John F.Kennedy for the part, Hamlin’s role as Senator Terry Fallon dredged up memories of an emotional time in the actor’s life.“The first time I saw an authority figure cry was the day John F.Kennedy was assassinated,” Hamlin, whose character is wounded in an assassination, recalled.“There was one teacher at our school who was so tough we were all scared of him.Moments after the news of Kennedy’s death came through, I saw him leave the classroom with tears streaming down his face.It was such a shock to me, and it epitomized how tragic that moment was for the country.” Linda Kozlowski, another main actor in Favorite Son, plays Senator Fallon’s ambitious press aide, who will stop at nothing to further her boss’ career. For Kozlowski, the role was humbling, and gave her an understanding of the intensity of politics.“As an actress you’re around publicists and journalists a lot, so I knew something about the process (of the press),” she said.“But the difference lies in the importance of what’s being publicized.Sally (her character), and others like her in Washington, are involved with events that shape the future of the country.Acting is just entertainment,” she said.Robert Loggia, who plays an FBI agent nearing retirement who finds an alarming coverup involving the senator and his aide, found the pan delightfully similar to his Oscar nominated role of Sam Ransom in Jagged Edge, and therefore good for his own personal politics.“I’m a relative late bloomer and I need an identification, like a product on a shelf," he said.Ci l—TOWNSHIPS WEEK—FRIDAY.OCTOBER 28, 1988 DAYTIME MOVIES 5:00 (PC) MOVIE: AMERICAN WARRIOR 11(1986.Drame Policier) Michael Dudikoff, Steve James Ex-agent de la
