I 2007 WINNER CCNA BETTER NEWSPAPERS COMPETITION ¦ —THE — RECORD The voice of the Eastern Townships since 1897 Come to our new location VOLVO Sherbrooke WEEKEND EDITION 95 CENTS + TAXES PM #0040007682 Friday, April 13, 2007 Herring is his name Hammonds are his game By Jen Young Record correspondent It may be big, it may be awkward, but when it comes to sound, its fans say the Hammond Organ will never be replaced — which is why Lennoxville local Brian Herring spends all his free time enjoying his.“The Hammond organs are not really popular anymore because they are hard to move and very few people play the organ anymore,” said the farmer, who bought his very first Hammond in 1965.“But they are my passion.“I work on them whenever I can.During breakfast time, lunch, and supper.” The Hammond was invented in January 1934 by Laurens Hammond, an American engineer and inventor. The first model, the Model A, was available from June of the next year. And Hammonds are now collectors’ items, no longer made. The inventor had intended the organ as a replacement for the piano in middle-class homes — and for use by radio stations. For the first few years this was what happened, but by the 1950s, jazz musicians such as Jimmy Smith began to use the organ’s distinctive sound. In the ’60s the Hammond be came popular with pop groups. In Britain the organ gained a somewhat negative reputation after being used for bland so-called elevator music, on rerecordings of popular songs and in locations such as ice rinks. However, it was a key part of the monster UK rock band Deep Purple’s distinctive sound in the early 1970s.The very last Hammond was built in the 1970s, when the plant burned down, taking the tools and equipment to make the organs with it.By this time, Herring was hooked.“When I was a kid I took all the piano lessons and then I went to the McGill Conservatory. When I left high school I fell into the rock-band thing and the Hammonds were big in rock and jazz music,” said Herring, who returned to take Please see Organs on Page 4 Winter’s Return PERRY BEATON Cars started slip sliding away on Montée Ascot in Sherbrooke and other parts of the Townships yesterday afternoon as Mother Nature decided to give the region at least one more taste of winter.(This car on Dunant hit a school bus; no one was seriously injured.) Meteorologists were predicting the region would receive a 15 cm-thick blanket of snow by this morning.Because the mercury had dropped to below zero, most of it stayed with us rather than melting as it hit the ground.Another couple of centimetres are expected to fall today as the temperatures hover just above zero, but most of the white stuff should disappear this weekend as meteorologists forecasted a balmier 10 degrees for Saturday and Sunday.Œ> TOYOTA KjicM rv\ov\d 2007 Yaris ® TOYOTA ® TOYOTA f^ic~hrv\ov\ol ¦ Details at Toyota Richmond Take advantage of the new eco auto rebate program $1000 rebate 2007 corona 5 speed manual s159/lnih •ËSgSkr s189/ i FIRST PAYMENT FREE! 2007 Corolla FIRST PAYMENT FREE! Channell yesterday, the borough’s section chief of Recreation and Community Life.“We were afraid the participants would have to dig under the snow [to find the garbage]." And that was before the new snowfall greeting residents this morning. So this Saturday’s garbage cleanup has been put off until April 28.That day at 10 a.m„ the borough will provide volunteers with safety vests, gloves, rakes and garbage bags.“It’s open to the public. We usually get a strong percentage of the [Bishop’s] University’s environmental club.It depends on the weather, we can get 20 to 60 [people helping out]." After an hour of picking up other people’s garbage, volunteers get munchies and a guest speaker (though the lecturer has yet to confirm for the new date, so Channell doesn't want to give out a name).Who’s who in business The economic development agency the CLD Memphrémagog has published a roundup of the region’s manufacturing industry. The 2007 guide to factories and industry has all the basics: company name, contact information, the number of employees and details on what’s manufactured (in French and in English). The guide is $7 and can be ordered by mail, or you can pop by the CLD and pick it up in person (at 281 rue des Pins in Magog).Weather Today:Periods of snow (2 cm.) mixed with rain.High plus 3.Low minus 4.Saturday: Cloudy.High 10.Sunday: Cloudy with 60 percent chance of showers.Low zero.High 10.Monday: Periods of snow or rain.Low minus 1.High plus 4.Ben by Daniel Shelton I THINK youfd p^juSTAUTTLE ARE YOU YI THINK SO."8®^ sueeIheseemepto y.THAT5 A\X- J VAVWjJ FEEL BETTER T(-ri ^~\S\ RIGHT AFTER \ [ LETT1N6 our A PISH WILL ££ PlNE,&7Y5 fekqjhhh., :-— niK ni RECORD Friday, April 13, 2007 page 3 ‘People are tired of not knowing what they are eating’ < ajinc VàÛWi Call : Dara Jane Loomis r!n& Aff.Real Estate Agent Sutton de 1'Estrie, Magog DARA JANE LOOMIS Cell: 8iQ 574-7804 Off: 8iQ 847-5400 tShXVruCii rtul’OO cc tPO-T1» irtioo - 4» (ttV*
