members of the Brome Lake community took centre stage and presented Love Never Dies, a dinner theatre comedy written and directed by Laura Teasdale.Sell-out performances put on by The Knowlton Players, upstairs at the Knowlton Pub, entertained hundreds, with the play being called a good example of what the community can achieve when it works together.“This play has brought the community together for good causes,” said one long-time Knowlton resident who took in the play last Friday night. Two extra shows were added to the schedule to accommodate the popular demand.Actors, who served as waiters and waitresses, donated their tips which will go to various local organizations, such as the SPCA, the Lions Club, Boy Scouts, First Responders, S.A.D.D., the Yamaska Literary Foundation and the Brome Lake Food Bank.“I have wanted to write this show set in the Knowlton Pub for years,” said Teasdale, adding that the actors were “funny, talented, and know how to hold their own in a barroom brawl!” Teasdale announced on closing night that “each actor volunteered 60 hours of their time for rehearsals,” which received a standing ovation from the audience.Set in February 1891, at the Bolton Pass Inn, during the wake for Beatrix Claphorn, the play featured a fine blend of haunting vocal music and raucous Irish drinking songs, as the British and the Irish families played out their antics, until the reading of the will and the final turn of events about their love for Beatrix. The cast of characters included Ace MacLellan (Reverend Foster), Barry Dyer (Guitarist), Bernice Paterson (Buffy), Bill Mallinson (Father Kelly), Bonita Burnham (Bridget O’Ryan), David Lambie (Turner Monk), Holly Bailey & Sarah Biggs (Esme Claphorn), Jane Wardle (Miriam Large), Janie Trew (Nanny Gaultier), Jim Ferrier (Otto Von Specimen), Juli Se-nier (Portia Claphorn), Laura Teasdale (Molley), Linda Carey (Desourdy), Meghan Allen (Siobhan), Ralph Steiner (Seamus O’Ryan), Roger De la Mare (Jeremy Claphorn), Shelley Mizener (Melody Moss-field), Steve Paglia (Wilson), Steve Trew (Herald Good), Tany Moreland (Desiree Claphorn), Woody Woodworth (Pianist), Beatrix (ak.a.Barry Dyer).Knowlton major infrastructure projects.Last week.Minister Nicole Menard announced that Farnham would at last have its bypass road, a project for which the municipality has been planning since 2000.The bypass road will connect Chemin des Coteaux, where it intersects with Chemin Gladu, to Yamaska Ouest, north of Arthur-Audette Bridge.Consequently heavy vehicles, tractor trailers in particular, will no longer have to pass through residential neighbourhoods in downtown Farnham as they travel between Highway 10 and the border, or between Cowansville and destinations further west. The lots have been purchased, some preparatory engineering work has already been done in that sector, and the surveying is complete. All that remains is the call for tenders.According to Mayor Josef Hüsler, who reacted favourably to the news on Friday, one of the main challenges of this particular project is the presence of a stream; on its account, work will only begin early in the fall.Hüsler expects the road to be open to traffic in 2014.Cont’d on page 2 CPierre Marziali pharmacien membre affilié Familiprix Hours: Mon.-Wed.9:00 a.m.- 8:00 p.m.Thur., Fri.9:00 a.m.- 9:00 p.m.Sat.9:00 a.m.- 5:00 p.m.408 County News learned that a five-member search committee has been set up to find a new town clerk for the Town of Brome Lake.Members of the committee include Town Manager Jean Bourret, Mayor Gilles Decelles, Councillor Marta Gubert Gomes, Roger Hébert and Rémi Lafrenière.Gomes is councillor for West Brome-Iron Hill and is also a member of the town’s recently created “executive follow-up committee.” Hébert sits on town’s Land Advisory Committee for Fulford-Bondville, according to the town’s website.Lafrenière is a former town manager for the Town of Bromont, who is said to be a “friend" of Bourret’s and “very competent.” News of the selection committee provoked numerous comments and questions.“What procedures are being used for the recruitment of the town clerk, and how was the selection committee chosen?” asked Alan Eastley of Knowlton.“Not a whole lot of Anglophones,” said Peter White, president of the Town of Brome Lake Taxpayers Association.“In Waterloo, a firm was hired to search for a qualified candidate for their general manager and town clerk, who were hired on Feb.20, 2012,” said Kathryn Lexow, a spokesperson for the Concerned Citizens Coalition of Brome Lake.“Too bad we could not be this professional when selecting our new town clerk." “Though this is officially recognized as a bilingual municipality there is not one Anglophone on the selection committee,” said Marc Clerk of East Hill.Clerk added: “It is an obligation of the committee to select an individual who possesses the intellectual and linguistic qualities necessary to fill the duties of a properly bilingual administrator.” “When choosing the next town clerk, the credentials are not as important as the person's character and integrity,” said Gerry Moar, owner of Marina Knowlton. On Feb.1, a TBL job posting for a town clerk appeared in various news outlets, asking applicants to submit their résumés by Feb.10.Alain Roy, town clerk since 2003, left to become assistant director of the Haute-Yamaska MRC, headquartered in Granby.Mayor Decelles would not say when a decision on the next town clerk will be made public, when asked by Brome County News last Friday.Farnham Stay, Park & accommodate the new road.Expenditures for this municipal work, valued at $000,000, will not affect the town’s current financial forecast, as the amount was budgeted six or seven years ago, as Hiislcr explained. The mayor has added that residents are also looking favourably on this project.Dunham will also he the site of structural improvements shortly, Minister Ménard further announced. The bridge over the Stevens stream, on Rte 202 between Chemin Malenfant and Nicolet St., will be entirely rebuilt. The structure, built in 1960, was deemed to require major work when inspected, last May.Both the construction of the new bridge in Dunham and the first phase of road work in Farnham are expected to cost between $1 and 5 million, but Transports Quebec will not be more specific at this stage in order to avoid skewing bids in the tendering process.latte mers Foot care specialist j A P Q.membei 1.-ÇPM-Q.Receipts availnhlt* Manicure and Nail Care Gift Certificates available 266-0997 245 do In llivière, Cowansville The Scoop Mable Hastings Tfiis evening as I sat sipping a hot cup of tea, trying desperately to block out the sound of the television and the mayhem that lives in a house filled with people, two dogs and a parrot, I realized that the household noises of today differ immensely from those I knew growing up.Forty plus years ago when I was a kid, I can remember the sounds in our house as being a comfort rather than the seemingly endless competition of one electrical gadget trying to outdo another. The sound of my brothers and our uncle strumming the guitar, singing and yes even yodeling into the wee hours of morning; and thunder as a storm blew in on a windy summer night.Voices, rising up through the old register in the floor and landing on our bedroom walls like a lullaby as we fell asleep; voices we assumed would always be there. The wind in the big tree just outside the bedroom window slapping its leaves together in a round of applause befitting the greatest of performances and the buzz of June bugs dancing around the flood light on the porch; I hear them still. The song of crickets and frogs as night began to fall.At night we’d often gather around an adult as a story was told; one that was supposedly true but almost too surreal to believe.Ghost stories were my Uncles specialty and he had some real winners about houses haunted around the back roads in Potton.I remember Leadville in particular as being the location for some of his scariest tales. My Mother told stories of the Lake Monster in Memphremagog. If you ask any of us kids, our Mom saw that thing several times with her own eyes and she even heard its haunting scream! We were told stories about witches who could turn into crows and spy on people. And our great old uncles Ira and Joe Brown, who lived on Peabody road and stood just over four feet in height, were the closest things to little leprechauns that we had ever known.Ira with his harmonica serenaded us with songs about an Indian Maiden named; Red Wing until we all knew the words and sang along.I’m humming it now.Tlie noises in our houses were different because life was so different then. The town was filled with character.People that we, as kids, considered to be as intriguing by site and personality as any Harry Potter character you could imagine. These unique personalities were people who became legend for many of the kids in the area; most had nicknames that if mentioned would surely evoke a smile.Cont'd on page 3 JRD JOLYRIENDEAU&DUKEca lcow**i vmm Hi! to accuse Charles of being a lay-about who just sits around, even though he has been in a wheelchair for 58 years. He was only 29 when he lost the use of his legs but as he put it “the heart and the head is where life is.” It isn't just a frivolous comment as it seems he has devoted his life to learning and helping others. While living in New Orleans he founded the Council of Concern to ensure seniors in need had a food program.A program ahead of it's time in light of the flooding and misery that devastated New Orleans in 2005.He spent many years as a consultant with the Humane Society working hard to get a bill passed to stop animal testing for research.Charles was born in Little Rock, Arkansas then moved to Louisiana. He grew up in a strict fundamentalist Christian family where fire, brimstone and the creationist theory were assumed truths. It was not surprising he ended up in ecumenical studies at Yale for his first Masters but probably surprised everyone to graduate as a Unitarian Minister. The Unitarian Church goes back to the third century, it has no connection to the Bible and has no creed. There are 14 principles that comprise reason, rational thought, science, and philosophy that coexist with faith in God.John Quincy Adams, Darwin, Bartok, Emerson, Dickens and Florence Nightingale are just a few well known Unitarians.Charles has been a Minister for 40 years, but that didn't slow him down from going back to school to get two more masters degrees in Philosophy and Social Work. The accolades don't stop there as he also had time to become a U.S.Marine Corp.Jet pilot Captain. He flew at 35,000 feet doing reconnaissance missions during W.W.II and in Korea. After being with Marion Paul Smith for thirty years, Charles married his third wife in a celebrated ceremony at Manoir Lac Brome in 2007.His three sons are in California and Texas along with his 8 grand- and great grand children.Certainly Charles has no intention of slowing down as he hopes to share his distance education courses with other residents and start up a writers group.Who knows maybe he will go off to work in Africa, he is an amazing man who never wants to stop learning.BCN RATES & Pommeraie may have to go back to the drawing board for its choice of a site for the planned long-term care facility in Cowansville. It was revealed last week that the Department of Health and Social services (MSSS) has asked Quebec's Société immobilière (SIQ), which is responsible for real estate transactions involving government agencies, to review the process that led to the choice of one location over several others. The projected addition of sixty beds in Brome-Mis-sisquoi, later increased to seventy with the inclusion Games Cont’d from page 3 of Bedford, was first announced in 2007.While the expanded care facility in Farnham will be inaugurated shortly, the planned establishment of forty new longterm spaces in Cowansville has been so plagued with various delays, that shovels have yet to break ground.Beyond the controversy over the allocation of spaces between Cowansville and Bedford, which led to the resignation of the entire administrative board of la Pommeraie, the Cowansville project was also delayed when estimates disclosed prospective building costs in the area of $400,000, instead of the MSSS target of $200,000.Having deliberated alternatives and taken into account numerous constraints, the CSSS chose a site on Rte 241, in proximity to Brome-Missisquoi-Perkins Hospital. It is generally regarded that citizens from the area were dissatisfied with the process and the outcome alike. The CSSS has awaited the MSSS autho- and community organizations of Cowansville).Parents can also communicate with the Sac à Mots at 450.266.3766.All those without a child 0-5 years old or who do not live in Cowansville can purchase the game for $12.00.The game is also available in English with the same terms and conditions. The 5-10-15 Challenge card game was created to give parents ideas and to offer them a challenge; play with your child 5 minutes in the morning, 10 minutes in the afternoon and 15 minutes before bedtime. Therefore, the only activities retained were those that can be done in 5, 10 or 15 minutes with very little material.Following the launch of the card game in October 2010, the partners of the CAL distributed 200 copies of the game. The activities were subsequently improved using the comments received from families who experimented with one of these copies. The card game was designed to promote the development of a child. The parents) needs to spend quality time interacting with their child, something which we often lack. The 5-10-15 Challenge card game offers a dynamic way of spending time with your child while having fun.Only a few minutes are needed for parents to devote i00% of their attention to their child. This time spent together, while having fun, will have huge impacts on the parent-child bond. The partners of the CAL wish to thank Avenir d’Enfants as well as the Town of Cowansville for financing the printing of 1125 card games.Thank you for the wonderful work by Angèle Michelin, photographer at Milles et une images, Marie-Andrée Bricault, the graphic designer, and the members of the 5-10-15 Challenge committee without whom this beautiful project would have been impossible to complete.risation for the construction of the care centre since the fall of 2010.When reached by phone on Friday, MNA Pierre Paradis was quick to point out that the CSSS was under no obligation to hold a call for tenders."There has been a consensus in the implementation of this project, just as a consensus ultimately emerged on the balance of care spaces between Bedf ord, Farnham, and Cowansville. The need is there and no one contests it .This is taking too long.In Farnham the work is complete, in Cowansville it has yet to begin. My primary concerns are celerity and transparency.” Paradis hopes that the recent election and appointment of a new administrative board at CSSS La Pommeraie will have a positive effect on the project, to bring it to fruition as quickly as possible.Much like Paradis, board chairman Michel Lafrance, also reached by The Record on Friday, will not discuss potential courses of action on his part until the SIQ has completed the review and released the conclusions of its enquiry into the site selection process. Each year, many Canadian women over 40 see their lives shattered by osteoporosis. Please consult your doctor or visit our Nicole Taillon F Web site Sculpteur^ ,
