Jason Forget and Bruno Audet.By Murielle Parkes Record Correspondent Mansonville There was plenty of talent and spontaneity at last Friday’s coffee house in Mansonville, as demonstrated by the three musicians who came together unrehearsed to provide a spirited rendition of ‘(I Would Walk) 500 Miles’ by the Proclaimers; in no time, youth and others had moved to the front of the hall and were wildly clapping.Ralph Steiner and Jason Forget played guitar.Bruno Audet was on spoons. The event took place in Man-sonville’s St.Cajetan’s church.Citizen Advocacy’s SADD group (Students Against Destructive Decisions) has been sponsoring open-mike affairs for the past five years.Such events regularly bring together both locals and visitors offering a multiinstrumental mix of country, rock, folk, pop, contemporary and “soppy love songs.” The evenings have also welcomed other forms of entertainment, notably dance and poetry.Friday’s participants included 15 artists from Potton and neighbouring communities, including two youngsters — Kira Nichols, and Megan Woodard — who made their coffee-house debut. As in the past, Steiner brought along his emcee talents.\1/ Un héritage à off the snow tires now.And while you’re at it, it’s also a prime time for a checkup.Over the last couple of decades cars and trucks have undergone major technical changes.Onboard electronics control everything from fuel mixtures to ignition timing and idle speeds. But while the cars are more complicated in some ways, the same old rules apply when it comes to maintenance. Here’s a bit of a refresher: • Grandpa had to get the oil changed regularly on his Model A Ford, and you still have to do the same to your Ford Focus.Oil is the lifeblood of a vehicle, keeping everything lubricated, picking up contaminants and helping to keep your engine from turning into a chunk of molten metal.Regular oil changes are the single easiest way to keep your car alive longer.• While Grandpa was at it he checked out any other fluids under the hood.Today that includes transmission and brake fluids, as well as coolant levels.A visual check for leaks can help to spot problems.• The tires on the Model A were prone to blowouts, and changing a tire on the roadside was a common.Today’s tires are much safer and more dependable, but they still require some attention.Regular pressure checks and a visual inspection for signs of wear.• Behind the tires is a suspension that has changed a lot since the 1930s.But a properly functioning suspension makes a car safer, more fuel efficient and more enjoyable to drive.• Once everything has been fixed up under there, an alignment is the icing on the cake.Keeping all the wheels going in the same direction has a big impact on fuel economy and handling. There’s no point in having a vehicle that takes more fuel than it should. There’s Under The Hood Maurice Crossfield also no point in living with bad handling when an alignment would make life so much easier.• After a winter of filth and abuse, most of our cars could use a good cleanup and visual inspection.Clean inside and out, and while you’re at it keep your eyes open for scratches, dings and rust spots. You’ll want to figure out what to do with them to keep things from getting worse. While you’re at it, a check all the lights.By the time your spring checkup is complete, your car is going to look better and be much more enjoyable to drive. You will also have the peace of mind of knowing that everything has been checked out and fixed, so chances are you’re not going to have a problem jump on you from out of the blue.On a personal note Speaking of out of the blue, last i/^t CRDI Montérégie-Est Outre ik* réadaptation en déficience intellectuelle Seeking Intermediate Resources (RI) for children, Scott Crossfield, the legendary test pilot who became the first man to fly twice the speed of sound. In terms of family connections, he and my father had the same great grandfather. One brother stayed here while the other finally settled in the U.S., where Scott Crossfield was born in 1921.He trained pilots in the Second World War, and then ended up as a civilian test pilot. In 1953 he became the first man to fly Mach 2, or 1,290 miles per hour.An article in the Los Angeles Times last week stated that he was one of a handful of people who could go up in a hurtling piece of machinery and have the nerve to push the envelope.Trained both as a pilot and engineer, he would go on to develop the X-15 rocket plane, which he would later fly at Mach 2.97, a hair’s breath from three times the speed of sound. In test flights he would also brush the outer edges of the atmosphere, reaching an altitude of 88,000 feet, or nearly 17 miles. He was considered for a job as one of the first astronauts, but he turned it down rather than ride into space in a vehicle he couldn’t control. But his work on the X-15 has been regarded as a contributing factor to the eventual development of the space shuttle. In later years he would work as a technical and policy advisor. He received two awards from then-President John F.Kennedy, and in the 1980s was inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame and the International Aerospace Hall of Fame.He had a few brushes with death, like when his X-15 broke in two on landing, or when the rocket engine exploded during a test on the ground.Last week he was in a lesser craft, a Cessna 210, when he encountered a thunderstorm in Virginia. This time the 84-year-old pilot didn’t get away. The news of his crash was covered by all the major U.S.media outlets.Kind of an ironic but appropriate way to go for a man who loved aviation and all aspects of flight.I am sorry I never got to meet him.But I guess I know where I got my love of flying from.Art exhibit in a recent party they gave to wish their beloved teacher a happy retirement.“I was very touched that they cared so much." said Ladd.“But I really felt now was the time to pull back from teaching, something I’ve been doing for over 15 years, three times a week.” Ladd, a Knowlton resident whose house on Davignon is as much art gallery and studio as cosy home, is a prolific artist whose Still far from retirement, Ladd is currently preparing for his first exhibit in a number of years, taking place at the Brome County Museum from May 13 to 22.“I like the idea of exhibiting at the museum; it’s the first time there for me.I’ll be bringing fifty or so recent paintings, and I’ll be there every day.It takes a lot out of you, but I enjoy talking with people.” Ladd has no interest in portraits, but will occasionally deem to paint an animal or two.“I really like doing old barns. But, they’re hard to find now, so many have been torn down, all but disappeared.I still plan to spend a lot of time looking around though.” Over the years, Ladd has painted on site many times, setting his easel in wayward, isolated spots in the Townships and by the sea in Maine.“You could say I’ve painted right in the sea,” laughs the artist remembering many a soaking by errant waves on Monhegan Island.“Now I usually work from the photos I’ve taken.” An active volunteer and dedicated naturalist, Ladd is a member of the Town of Lac Brome’s environmental committee.“I think it’s very important we preserve what we have.I’ve seen so much disappear over the years, wetlands developed, housing go up in places that were once wild. It’s a shame to see it go.” He also intends to be part of the Tour des Arts, of which is a founding member, at least for this summer.“Another thing I am definitely going to keep is commission work.I get a great kick out of it.” Phyllis tells the story of one particularly heart-warming commission.“A woman brought Gordie a tiny piece of painted wood from her old home that she had been keeping in a small box for years. The 0mm COURTESY GORDON LADD Gordon Ladd spent years capturing the peaceful elegance that abounds through out the Eastern Townships.house had been utterly changed and her memory of it was vague.Gordie drew a sketch, then her brother be came involved and said — no the stairs were here, a window there, so he had more to go on.“When he unveiled the finished painting she just broke down.In fact, we all became teary. She said it was just like the old house. He even drew a silhouette of her in a window. It was probably the most rewarding thing he’s done.It makes you feel very good when people are so appreciative." A preview of the exhibit at the museum can be seen on the net at www.gordonladd.com.“I won’t say the web site brings in a lot of business,” says Ladd.“But it’s worthwhile, definitely worthwhile keeping it up to date.” pour *otrt rttraite « KNOWLTON Condos » 18 units in construction for INVESTORS - YIELD OF 20% AND OVER - FINANCING POSSIBILITY AT 100% - RENT GUARANTEED - COMPLETE RENT MANAGEMENT Visits and appointments: GUY MARTEL 514-924-7126 WWW.CONDO-OPTION.COM 429-431 ch.Knowlton, Knowlton, QC on Business Come Swing at Stressy’s! This very special event will be held Friday, May 5, at 5 p.m.at L’Auberge des carrefours de Cowansville (Days Inn). This activity has three principal objectives: first, to sensitize the population to the importance of taking as good care of our mental health as we do our physical health.Second, to show that mental health is a matter of importance for the wellbeing of the community as well as for individuals. The final goal is to present the many mental health services offered by the seven member organizations.Throughout the evening artistic works produced by the talented artists of Phare Source d’entraide will be on display.During the silent auction, to be held at the end of the dinner, you will be invited to bid on these lovely works of art.(At a silent auction you write down the price you would like to pay for a particular item, and hope that no one outbids you!) After the dinner, there will be a presentation featuring Mara Tremblay on guitar. The show will also feature Ralph Steiner and Laura Teasdale, musicians and singers well-known among members of the Townships English-speaking community. The price of a ticket is $30.If you would like to purchase tickets for this special evening, they are on sale at the Cowansville and Region Chamber of Commerce, 225 rue Principale in Cowansville, 450-266-1665, as well as at the Cowansville Library, 533 rue Sud in Cowansville, 450-263-0888.You can also call 450-266-1979.Knowing what’s happening in my community is worth $11.50 a month! i —THE —¦ Start my own subscription to RECORD immediately! $1 1.50 per month!
