celebrating its 150th anniversary as the Parish of Nelsonville.Although the small brick church on South Street was not built until 1859, the parishioners were already functioning as a congregation, anxiously waiting the completion of the building, which was finally consecrated in 1860.“The history is a little fuzzy and we don’t have much documentation,” says Evelyn Lewis, one of the congregation’s lay leaders.“We are doing our best to put material together and we’re asking anyone who has photos and information about the church history to contact us.“We do know that in 1854, the Rev.John C.Davidson was our first minister and that he was the incumbent when the church was built. We believe that the first congregation met in each other’s houses until the church was complete.“Before the Parish of Nelsonville, it was the much larger Rectory of Dunham, covered by traveling preachers.” To celebrate the anniversary, Trinity is planning a number of events, including a joint service in May with Emmanuel United Church and hopefully, the return of many previous ministers and students.“We plan to give our guests the pulpit for the day and to then have a reception in the church hall afterwards. Our group is very good with receptions. We’ve had some very good people here over the years.“One of them, Ros McGregor, is now head of the Mile End Mission in Montreal. She has already committed to coming out and telling us about her work one Sunday,” says Lewis.“We’re a friendly outgoing church.Mission is important to us.One of us always has some kind of a project going. One of things we're trying to do to celebrate the anniversary is to have a fundraising event every month.” The money will go to different projects — there is never enough money to do what needs to be done.“One thing we would really like to do is to refur- bish the church organ. We have a piano and they use all kinds of instruments today, but people like the organ, it’s really a lovely organ, part of our history and we’d like to repair it.” Trinity Anglican’s outgoing nature translates in local good works. The church’s food bank and free luncheons help many of the town’s poorer residents get through the month. They also offer a place for comfort and referral. The program has won recognition in the national Church. The first two fundraisers have been deemed successful and the congregation is grateful to the public for its support.February’s ham and baked bean supper was followed by an evening of bluegrass in March with Tom Kilbride.“I must admit I was a little nervous beforehand,” says Lewis.“We’d never done anything like this before, and I didn’t know how well it would go.But we had a good group. It turned out to be an awful snowy night — the worst thing that could happen — but we had a full house and everyone loved it.” The next fundraiser is the spring luncheon planned for Tuesday, April 20.This is a departure from the Friendly Society’s usual April meeting as a way to commemorate the 150th anniversary with a traditional ladies white-gloved luncheon — the perfect time and place for that new Easter Bonnet.Typical in any Anglican Church is the ladies group, usually known as Anglican Church Women or ACW.At Trinity, it is the tradition for the church’s women to join the Girl’s Friendly Society. The society raises funds, helps the church in many ways and is part social gathering, with the emphasis on community.See Church, Page 16.SUN» Süfc**06S am ft* „.io DAVID ANDERSON/SPECIAL Cowansville’s Trinity Anglican Church will host a variety oj fundraising Association has released the results of its annual survey of new car warranties, noting some gains and some losses. If you’re considering a new vehicle, you might want to take a closer look at the warrantee, which could save you a lot of money in the long run.Leading the improvement category was Hyundai, which has really beefed up its warranties.Basic coverage has gone from three years/60,000 km to five years/100,000 km.The powertrain war- ranty has gone from five years/100,000 km to seven years/120,000 km.Roadside assistance is now available for five years or 100,000 km.The only negative about Hyundai’s new warranties was that they aren’t retroactive. If you bought a 2004 Hyundai prior to March 22, you must pay between $396 and $895 to get the same coverage.Meanwhile, Acura has extended its roadside assistance warrantee to four years from three.BMW has doubled its warrantee for rust perforation to 12 years, unlimited mileage. In the losses category, Ford has cut its roadside assistance warrantee to three years/60,000 km, from the previous five years/100,000 km.The warrantee people at Daimler-Chrysler seem to be playing a bit of a shell game, advertizing a seven-year/115,000 km powertrain warrantee. What the ads don’t mention is the $100 deductible per repair visit to the dealer after three years or 60,000 km.The CAA also noted that Daimler-Chrysler warranties can be confusing for car buyers. That’s especially true for those buying these cars and trucks a couple of years from now at a used car dealer, thinking they have a better guarantee than they really have.Diesel pickup trucks from each of the North American big three are also getting similar warrantee coverage.Trucks produced by Ford, Daimler-Chrysler and General Motors are offered with a five-year/160,000 km warrantee. But the $100 deductible kicks in after three years or 60,000 km.While you might pay a lot for a Volvo, one thing you won’t be paying for is a top level guarantee. The Swedish automaker still only offers a one-year, unlimited mileage warrantee against surface rust.Getting your vehicle’s oil changes regularly is always a good idea. With that in mind Kia now offers free oil and filter changes for original owners of Kia’s bought after April 1, for as long as they own their vehicle. The CAA’s advice to car buyers: Carefully read the fine print on any warrantee on any vehicle. They can be complicated and filled with loopholes, and when you’re paying the kind of money that’s at stake, you want your eyes wide open.A further bit of advice is to make sure you follow the recommended service schedule for your vehicle. That way the manufacturer will have a hard time not respecting the terms of the warrantee.Warrantee coverage is always a bit of a gamble. You might opt for one level of coverage only to find out later that another level of coverage would have saved you money.Or something could happen Mdrielle Fleury is in the Eastern CROSSFIELD This historic building has served as a general store, printing shop, movie house and café.Owner Marty Gillespie is working to make it look like it did in 1930.• Coldbrook Realties, at the corner of Lakeside and Victoria, will be adding a second floor, doubling its office space to 2,600 square feet.• At 88 Lakeside, home of the Brome County News, a new gallery will be added and the front of the building spruced up.• Restaurant Lakeside (formerly Nil-son’s), will have its gallery completed and exterior work finished.Already undergoing major work is the former Pettes general store at the corner of Knowlton Road and Mont Echo. Now owned by Marty Gillespie, it is in the process of being restored to what it looked like in the 1930’s.The CCU is also busy with other projects outside the SPAIP zones, like the Jardins Coldbrook project which will see a total of nine eight-unit apartment blocks built off Pine Street. While the criteria for the SPAIP zones may sound restrictive to some, Coldbrook Realties owner Reg Gauthier said he didn’t have a problem with it.His building, which once served as the Eastern Townships Savings Bank and as a BP gas station, will finally look more like the other buildings in the neighborhood.“The concept was always to make it Victorian,” he said.“I went to the CCU with the plan and they welcomed it with open arms.” Gauthier said he has no choice but to expand, because the region’s real estate market continues to gain steam. While an average house in Brome Lake was worth $86,000 in 1997, it’s now worth about $156,000.It’s a trend he expects will continue for at least a few more years.“The problem we have now is a lack of properties, there’s nothing available,” he said.Gauthier said world problems, like the war in Iraq or the stumbling stock market, have made people turn to real estate as a safe investment.Very low interest rates have also added fuel to the hot market.Wilkinson said the new regulations will help maintain and improve the architectural image of Brome Lake. She said if the regulations had existed previously, some buildings would never have looked like they do now. While that cannot be changed, the municipality has given business owners until the fall of 2006 to make sure their signs do meet the requirements laid out in the Master Plan.“We needed something so that people couldn’t do just anything.Once the work has been done you can’t go back and tell them to change it,” Wilkinson said.“So we’re trying to work with people.” \ Brome County NEWS Alison Steel Secretary (450) 242-1188 — Brome County News Hot and cold: An afternoon at Wednesday, April 14, 2004 page 7 the spa (part 2) We stood on the last dry step of the fieldstone path that leads down to the North Missisquoi River. The late-afternoon sun sparkled on the corn snow that lined the steep banks down to the hurrying stream.Dark-looking water dipped, danced, and charged over boulders and ledges in the rocky channel.More than the impressive view made us hesitate, shivering a bit, clad only in bathing suits, damp towels, and sandals. The next step would be right into the water, inside a small caged-in space through which a powerful current flowed. The metal railings enabled the faithful to dunk completely under the surface without tear of being carried away downstream, which, the owners would agree, could be bad for business. We were perfect gentlemen on this occasion: Go ahead ladies, you first, take your time. For a moment I thought of the penguins in the Antarctic, jostling about on an icy ledge by the open water: eventually one falls in and, if it doesn’t get eaten, it’s safe for the rest.Being eaten wasn’t the worry here.Hypothermia was the greater risk.I was relieved from one concern, though.I’d thought, if we spent 10 minutes in the sauna, does that mean we have to stay in the river for the same time?Of course, after 30 seconds, you wouldn’t be able to feel anything. And, if you did succumb to the cold, at least the coroner could tell your family exactly when your heart stopped.Luckily, all we were supposed to do was dunk, then get out.In our Lake Mas-sawippi days, we’d often dive into the water on a nice day in October or November, as Long as the sun was high and the air warm.(I used to do the polar bear thing in Brome Lake too, but not any more: apparently risk of fatal coronary is directly proportional to increasing age) If self-immersion in the frosty North Missisquoi had been a bit of a challenge, step four of the spa process was pure pleasure. We hurried back up the stone path to the steaming, bubbling outdoor hot tubs.We had our choice and quickly took the one by the edge of the deck, from which we could take in the view up and down the scenic gorge through which the churning waters coursed. We sat back in the welcoming warmth, cranked up the controls, and let the jets do their thing.By times it was difficult keeping the body under; bubbles filled my bathing suit and increased the buoyancy.(There were rude comments to the effect that the bubbles might be of an inside source, but that was wrong.mostly) A tub-side beverage service was about the only thing missing.Otherwise, every prospect please — clear blue sky, the river bounding out of site around a corner in the channel to the southeast, and a great all-over minute recommended limit.Too long, apparently, will reduce the body to a heap of immobile jelly-like protoplasm.Step five involved pain again, and hence was short. To close our pores, we dunked in a tub of cold water, then hurried back inside.Step six involved reopening those same pores, this time really wide.We entered the steam room, a pressure-cooker type environment in The Country Squire Brian Eddington Radka Fisarovà to perform any other day for that matter. And this time I wouldn’t make the same mistake as after my first hot-tub session, years ago at the Tennis Plus complex over Granby way. After that session, I went out and played shinny hockey in the minus 20 C night air.My face felt like Saran Wrap, pores pinched tight and skin stretched thin.It took days to recover.T Monday to Friday 9 a.m.to 6 p.m Saturday 9 a.m.to 5 Nesquik, and Dove soap. The professional organizer has an ample supply of both in her home and you can bet both are neatly stacked. She starts every morning with Nesquik, which she buys by the case and then uses the low flat boxes as storage for files in her home office, cradling bits and pieces in her very neat closets.“I am a perfectionist and a Taurus,” says the petite woman who makes a living helping the disorganized and clut-terbugs of the world.“I also love a bargain." Hence, the stacks of Dove on the top shelf of her bathroom closet.“We use a lot of soap,” says one of the sparkplugs behind the Ottawa Citizen’s Clean Sweep Contest, Susan Yearwood, who helps the clutterbugs of the world for a living, was a driving force which attracted behind the Ottawa Citizen’s Clean Sweep Contest, which attracted 195 entries from people 195 entries from with too many possessions.men and women drowning in too many possessions.“If you have too much, you cannot enjoy it,” says the owner of Yearwood Efficient Solutions and a graduate of the occupational therapy program at Queen’s University. She has about six sweaters stacked in her closet and only a modest number of blouses hanging neatly on hangers.Next door in the spare room, her golf shirts and summer clothing are on a portable rack, waiting to be moved to storage space in the basement. The rack is an intermediate step in the organizing powers of this calm Continued on next page Construction David Ottavi Construction & Renovation Specialist David Ottavi General Contractor (450) 293-8892 Cell.: (514) 237-5292 davidottavi@videotron.ca nteed*0^, Guata Wednesday, April 14, 2004 page 9 Brome County News Home Renovations Professional organizer walks the talk Continued from previous page woman, who prefers good planning and order over distractions and confusion.“I needed more space in my office because things were bursting out.I took over the closet, which was filled with out-of-season clothing. The rack is not perfect, but it works for now 1 until we free up space in the basement." Taking mini steps to organizing is the key to success in organizing your home and feeling good in the space, says Yearwood, who invited us for a peek into the daily life of a professional organizer. She’s not an interior designer dedicated to matching wall colours to carpets.Instead, the woman who would one day really like matching living room furniture is fascinated by the psychology of space.“1 am not looking for nice, but how people feel because the house feels nice. The goal is to have relaxed, comfortable space where you can be yourself.” You do that by organizing, keeping what you love and use, and tossing what you don’t want or need. This professional organizer walks the talk. She was on a stool in the kitchen one day, reaching for a bowl on a top shelf and brought down two cheese caddies. They were wedding presents when she married Richard Yearwood, a physical therapist, 11 years ago.“We never used them.So I put one in our church donation box in the basement." A year later, the second caddy was handed over to the church for a sale. She doesn’t miss them and has more space in her cabinets. The church box is crucial to her neat program. It is filled two or more times a year and taken to Parkdale United Church.“You have to clean regularly -your clothing, books anything you don’t use." temps du pardon “Pourquoi les gens ici sont-ils tous heureux, sauf moi?" Entre Nous Thérèse Bernard 200-i ECHO HATCHBACK CE $ 169 by the month/lease 60 months Freight & preparation included.Cash $433.No down payment. Also available when leasing.Acce
