the science of unravelling mysteries of the past, but when volunteers from the local Potton Heritage Association get together, by-gone days are revealed through a collection of local photographs.Paul Rouilliard, Jean Soumis, Andrée Gratton and Gérard Leduc have been scouring attics for months searching for old photographs which will be exhibited beginning May 18 at the Mansonvil-le Town Hall.In Yesterdays of Potton, the volunteers will take viewers on an historic tour of the region’s roots through photographs which provide a pictoral view of the past.“We make real discoveries when we walk into people’s homes,” said Leduc.“They are glad to show us their treasures hidden in albums, some of then yellowed and wrinkled, but all reveal life in the early days.” Among the finds are historic photos of early agriculture, industry, family life, clothing, navigation on Lake Memphre-magog and large hotels. As well as the photos, Leduc said volunteers have heard stories such as one from an old-timer who recalled the names of the dog and horse in a 1915 photo. The photo exhibition will feature shots of the covered bridge in Mansonville, its mills, the construction and 1912 inauguration of the wharf at Rnowlton Landing, the 1927 flooding of Lake Memphrema-gog, the Vale Perkins post office, and descendents of Henry Ruiter and his whiskey distillery. For more information on the exhibit, luscious costumes, striking sets.It sounds as though I’m describing highlights of the Stratford Festival of plays, an out-of-the-ordinary Broadway touring company, or even the past season of works at Theatre Lac Brome in Knowlton, but the thoroughly professional company that is so deserving of such praise is Bishop’s University’s drama department. It’s no secret the Lennoxville institution’s dramatics program consistently turns out some of the finest English-language student productions in the province. So a preponderance of plaudits is unavoidable after experiencing one of their works. The department’s most recent productions are as good a proof as any that the theatrical work presented at Bishop’s is just as vital for the greater community as it is for the students on stage. Our Town and Dangerous Liaisons are both period pieces that deal with the various relationships people have with each other — from spouses to parents, friends to lovers.GAMES They both deal with games people play, but while Dangerous Liaisons, by Christopher Hampton, examines the complicated power plays the affluent use to gain control over each other, Thornton Wilder’s Our Town looks at the simple game of life we must all play, where the goal is often just to survive its ups and downs with dignity. Our Town is an American classic, a multi-faceted tale that follows the stories of the inhabitants of any small town in North America. We meet the local doctor and newspaper editor, their wives and children, the milkman and the choirmaster, the reverend and many others who contribute to the community in various ways. The main thread of the story follows young George and Emily, next door neighbors who grow up together, fall in love and embark on a life as a married couple.Unfortunately, along with the happiness must come tragedy and, after nine years of marriage and two children, Emily dies during childbirth.Under the expert direction of Greg Tuck, the cast sparkled in this beautiful and tragic tale. The young actors seemed to be filled with purpose — and the genuine, uncluttered humanity of small-town folk.EXHUBERANT Craig MacAdam and Alison McElwain captured the essence of George and Emily, two people who travel from viewing the world with child-like wonder to the queasy expectations of young adults. The exhube-rant pair exuded a natural By Sunil Mahtani charm that quickly won over the young audience at Monday’s afternoon performance.MacAdam and McElwain were supported by a cracker-jack cast who understood their roles well.Lucy Martin and Catherine Stewart gave particularly assured performances as Mrs.Gibbs and Mrs.Webb.John Reid is a natural comic who is quickly becoming a favorite among Bishop’s drama audiences. He tackled roles as the constable and one of George’s baseball-playing buddies with enthusiasm to spafe.Eric Page also had a nice turn as town drunk Simon Stimson.PEOPLE, NOT PROPS Visiting artist D’Arcy Poul-t.ney’s sparse set served the play well. After all, this is about people, not props.Providing the effects for all the imaginary props in the play was a sound effects team that created their magic from high above the audience.Though the synchronization wasn’t always perfect, they deserve credit for keeping up with the actors.Michael Medland’s lighting added just the right touch to the various moods the play evokes. The play’s beautiful message reminds us to live each day as if it were our last and to appreciate the little things in life, everything from the moon and milkshakes to mom. Most people only have glimpses of this as they live their lives, heightened moments of realization when they appreciate what life is all about. All too often, this disintigrates as layers and layers of nonsense clutter their minds again. Then, a few more years of being distracted, and all try to return to the things that are really important in life. The play’s meaning also fit in with Hindu philosophy, which teaches not to have undue attachment to the material things and people of this earth, for when our time comes, we all begin a separate journey and should never look back.People may have been meant to live two by two, as a : :-™ _ George (Craig MacAdam) gets a lecture from dad Dr.Gibbs (Rick Long) in Our Town line in the play goes, but when we depart this world, we go alone, a point the play makes painfully clear. Our Town can be looked at as a tragedy, and certainly the tears in many eyes after the plays ended would support that notion, but it really isn’t, because it reminds us that we’re all human and it is precisely that humanity that gives meaning to our lives. That’s something we can all celebrate.DANGEROUS PLAY While Our Town reminded me of the magic of theatre, a place where sets and costumes are secondary to a good story told by competent actors, Dangerous Liaisons proved just how effectively setting and wardrobe can be used to complement the other elements of the show.First off, Christopher Hampton’s stage adaptation of the French novel is magnificent. It was a pleasure to hear such refined, witty dialogue tripping off the tongues of these young actors. This year’s main-stage production, at Centennial Theatre in early March, charted the deception among the rich and infamous in 18th-century France.La Marquise de Merteuil and Le Vicomte de Valmont are materialists who use people as objects, playing out their sexual games and power struggles at others’ expense.Winnipeg director Ann Hodges brought the students to the level of artistry the department is quickly becoming known for.The show was remarkably well blocked out and directed.Hodges helped fill the young cast with the very spirit of French artistocracy.Their gestures and movements were bang on.This gracefulness served as the perfect counterpoint to the ruthlessness with which by Merteuil and Valmont operate.Alicia Helde displayed strong stage presence as Merteuil, who uses her intelligence and charm for evil, a professi-nal manipulator who plays the game even better than the men.If Helde seemed to lack a certain charisma at times, that is as much the fault of the always-calculating character she portrays.Merteuil hides behind false class and elegance — she is really a cannibal who eats away at the hopes, dreams, desires and ideals of those around her. After playing a 14-year-old convincingly in What I Did Last Summer, it was nice to see David Moase stretch into the role Valmont.Although at the start he seemed a boy among women, the 20-year-old actor quickly won me over with his playfulness and cockiness.Moase is blossoming into a mature lead.Annabelle Torsein as the virtuous weeping willow Valmont falls in love with was effective in a rather tender performance. The supporting players — Cynthia Allan as the busty prostitute Emilie, Shannon Arnold as the virgin Cécile, Rose Day as her worrisome mother, Annie Laurie as the wise Mme.De Rosemonde, Michael Laidlaw as the naive Danceny and James Duncan as the good-humored manservant to Valmont — added just the right spices to the recipe. The entire cast delivered nicely restrained performances, appropriate to the time the play is set, when passions were held within. The multi-panneled set by Montreal designer John Dinning was so breathtaking it took a few moments for it to sink in before one could concentrate on the actors. His pastel-colored depiction of the hotels and chateux of Paris in the 1780s, with paintings and ske-teches of period works, was the height of elegance that occupied the stage well. The costumes, on loan from Concordia and McGill universities and the National Theatre School, also added to the play’s lush look.Hodges has a wonderful touch when it comes to scene and set changes as well. They were as lyrical and fascinating to watch as the main action of the play, with the actors remaining in character and keeping their emotions visible even while the stage was darkened. This was a smart, sexy, sophisticated production, one of the classiest Bishop’s has mounted in recent memory.Hodges can come back to Bishop’s any time and continue her excellent work here, but I’m sure the invitation has already been extended.Magasin d'usfr, H.H.Brown ^ctory OiftV* MEN'S AND LRDI€S* Couiboy * Work Hiking • Casual Walkabouts OUTLET HOURS Monday.Tuesday.Wednesday 9:30 a.in.to 6 LIVE and to his deep baritone. He 111* New country men doing what they live to do It is very hard to keep up-to-date with what’s happening in the country music industry since new albums are being released every week.To most people, all these newcomers make things a bit confusing, so here’s a few reviews which will help you select what you want to hear.James Bonamy: What I Live To Do (EpioBony) This first album by a newcomer is a gem.Bonamy has talent and also a good sense of balance as to what should be on an album, despite his young age of 23.The selection of songs in this collection is great as it goes from up-tempo to poignant numbers. In “Dog In A Tool Box”, a rollicking number, Bonamy tells us that life with a wild person can make us feel out of breath, and in another, humorous song, being girl crazy makes a poor guy feel like he has his Brain In A Jar”.Love is simply what you Country Connection By Jessie Aulis make of it is the positive message on “The Couple” while “A-my their new home on a hilltop in West Bolton. There, amongst the Sutton mountains, the couple create their Down To Earth line of kitchenware.“A lot of love goes into each piece. When you run your fingers over the inside of a cup or bowl, each bump is an emotion, each piece is alive. No two pieces are the same, ” said Badger, who added their purpose is to create warm, beautiful pieces people will come to love.Their line is available in Knowlton at Les Voisin de St-Etienne and will also be on display this weekend at an old-fashioned Easter open house at the Badger farm on Bailey Road in West Bolton. The farm will be open Friday, Saturday and Sunday, April 5-7, for visitors to experience a traditional Easter weekend.A charge of $2 for adults and $1 for children covers the cost of coffee, tea, donuts and maple taffy on snow. The Badger’s gentle highland cattle, to be featured this fall on an episode of Sesame Street will roam the hillside while a country store and old-style sugar shack will feature maple products produced the old-fashioned way.— Sharon McCully.James Bonamy.a real gem.tly poignant “I Don’t Think I Will”.In “All I Do Is Love Her”, Bonamy sings that listening and understanding are two main factors on which love is based. As the album closer, Jimmy and Jesus” highlights the fact that there’s still people unselfishly trying to make the world a better place to be.This is a very refreshing album filled with positive values and one you’ll want to play over and over.It made me wonder who James Bonamy is?Born in Florida, the son of a car dealer and a housewife, the dark haired, oh-so-good-looking musician was raised with a brother in a close-knit family. His sound was shaped by two sets of influences. As a kid he grew up listening to a lot of the artists of the 70s and 80s, such as Waylon, Willie, Moe Bandy, Johnny Paycheck and Conway Twitty, because his father would play their albums at home.Later, as he was working to develop his own style, he listened to Keith Whitley, Clint Black and George Strait. It was during his freshman year at the University of Alabama that he gained the opportunity to take his music to a broader audience than just his family — an appearance on radio’s Country Boy Eddie Show in Birmingham (that’s also where Tammy Wynette started). It became obvious music was where his heart truly was so Bonamy quit school to work at Orlando’s famed Church Street Station historical district. His duties expanded from working in the gift shop to the stage to entertain people when the house band would let him.He then had a chance to audition for Opryland which led to moving to Nashville along with a slot in one of the park revues that summer.Moving to Music City was the right move as much for his career as his personal life. That’s where he met his wife Amy Jane, with whom he sang in the same Opryland country show for a year-and-a-half.Now they’re happily married and Amy Jane sings backup for him.Junior Brown: Junior High (MCGCURB) Is this country music Hawaiian-style?Not quite, although the influences of Texas and Hawaii are definitely present on the album.Brown offers a unique blend of country music, mainly due to his one-of-a-kind invention — the “guit steel”.What the heck is that you say?Well, a “guit steel” is a double-necked instrument that combines an electric guitar with a lap steel.Brown became famous in Austin thanks to his invention is a favorite in honky-tonks there. Now on Junior High, a five-song mini-album, you’ll find three of the finest tunes released on Brown’s 1994 album Guit With It, plus two new numbers. The first single, “My Wife Thinks You’re Dead”, is a hilarious tale about a guy on the run in which Brown’s nasal, almost flat delivery is as amusing as the song itself. There’s also “Highway Patrol”, which has a traditional flavor with Brown racing with “sireen-a-screamin”’ while “That’s Easy For You To Say” is in the purest country tradition. When it gets to track number four, you better hold your hat because you’ll instantly be transported in Hawaii with “-Lovely Hula Hands”.Just when you’re barely ajusting to this luau atmosphere, tighten your seat belt as the “guit steel” will take you to a Texas hoedown on “Sugarfoot Rag”, an infectious instrumental highlighting Brown’s dexterity with strings.I guess five numbers are enough for this album where Texas and Hawaii collide.By the time it’s over, you’ll think, What’s wrong with country music, country style?Ricochet: Ricochet (ColumbiaSony) Ricochet is a group of six young guys who are passionate about their music.Their debut collection of songs was written by some of Nashville’s top writers and the band’s chemistry, perfect instrumentation and airtight four-part harmonies come across well on these tunes. The opening number, “Daddy’s Money”, is very humorous with lines such as “She’s got her daddy’s money, her mama’s good looks, and look who’s looking at me?” Ricochet is currently riding the success of their sweet debut single “What Do I Know” and they have much more to offer. The guys can rock Southern-style through tracks such as the fiddle-fueled “I Can’t Dance” and “Ease My Troubled Mind”, with its electrifying guitar riff. But they’re also right on with ballads such as “The Truth Is I Lied”.With Heath Wright as their lead vocalisl/guitarist, Ricochet is a hard-driving band that has everything it requires to join the big league with country-rock groups such as Diamond Rio and Little Texas.Junior Brown.country music Hawaiian-style?Don’t forget the Kitty Wells show at Bar ' The Record—TOWNSHIPS WEEK— April 5-12, 1996—6 COVER Lennoxville choral group to perform tribute to Broadway University By Sunil Mahtani The University Singers and Chamber Choir.a place to make friends and have fun.Singers LENNOXVILLE — Some members of Bishop’s University’s choral group the University Singers sing simply for the joy of it, others do it for school credits, and yet others see it as an important step towards their goal of having a career in music. Two singers in the choir — composed of students and area residents — see being a member of the University Singers as the latter, and membership, as they TV ad goes, has its priviledges. For Sarah Heath, of Lennoxville, and Jenny Stutt, of Hali-burton, Ontario, one of the those advantages is the expert direction and advice of choirmaster Nancy Rahn who, since 1981, has honed the group into one of the best university choirs in the province. They were invited to perform at the Festival chorale de Montréal two weeks ago.Rahn suggested Heath and Stutt audition for the National Youth Choir, a group formed by the Association of Canadian Choral Conductors that tours Quebec and Ontario every two years to coincide with the association’s biannual conference.THEY MADE IT Only four singers from each province are chosen for the 40-member strong national choir and when Heath and Stutt both made it, it was as much a testament to Rahn’s dedication as it was to their talent. Each made a tape of three songs to submit to the selection committee.“It was a grueling experience,” said soprano Heath during reheasals for the choir’s annual spring concert to take place April 11 and 12.“I’d rather be adjudicated National Youth Choir.Nancy Rahn.conducting with confidence and commitment.reach for excellence RECORD PHOTOS/PERRY BEATON growing up as part of the Estrie Young Singers for seven years, said the members enjoy her style.“Everyone is attracted to her conducting. She doesn’t just conduct a choir, she conducts each person.” Heath said she loves singing as part of a group.“When you’re in a choir, it’s a real emotional feeling. It’s uplifting.” She added the choir is also a place where lasting friendships are made.“The choir is the best of friends — everyone likes everyone.” STRESS-BUSTER For Megan Paterson, the choir is a terrific treatment for tension.“Even if I’m in a bad mood, I always feel better after singing,” said Paterson, a native of South Africa.“It’s such a stress reliever.” Morgan Jones agress.“It’s a nice change from the rigors of academia,” said Jones, who hails from Fort Smith in the Northwest Territories.Alison Cail, of Moncton, New Brunswick, said Broadway music is plain old-fashioned fun.“I much prefer this than anything classical. You can strut your stuff,” said the effusive singer.“I’m just a fan of musicals.I want to live in a musical, where all of us could just break out into song.” Stutt said being in the National Youth Choir is a step closer to her dream of singing professionally.“I want to perform. If that doesn’t pan out, if I don’t add up, then I’ll find a different direction, but I don’t want a plan B, I just, want to have a plan A.You got to follow your heart and do what you love.” Heath is also moving towards a singing career.“Ideally, I’d love to perform,” she said.“I’d also love to conduct children’s choirs.Without children’s choirs, that’s where it all starts. You have to start young.” Stutt said singing is simply exhilerating.“If I have to make an analogy, it’s like being in a sporting event, like when you’re on a baseball team and your team wins,” she said.“There's also no better feeling than doing a solo and knowing you did well.Only we can’t congratulate ourselves like baseball players.Ideally, we’d like to jump onto each other.Yeah, we won!” The University Singers and Chamber Choir play their spring concert on Thursday, April 11, and Friday, April 12, at 8 p.m.at Bishops University’s Bandeen Hall.Tickets are $8 regular, $6 seniors and free for students.Tel: (819) 822-9692.than record a tape, go and listen to it, and no, it’s not right, and come back and do it again,” piped in mezzo-soprano Stutt.About 20 singers in Quebec auditioned. The two others chosen from the province are from Chicoutimi and Montreal.Heath and Stutt will join them as the choir tours Quebec and Ontario under conductor Robert Cooper, of the Toronto Mendelsohn Youth Choir and the Ontario Youth Choir and producer of Choral Concert Sunday mornings on CBC radio, before performing at the ¦choral conductor’s conference in Laval, near Quebec City in May.BROADWAY TRIBUTE Both Heath and Stutt said they enjoy the diversity of musical styles available to them as part of the choir.Although the University Singers usually perform serious music such as Scarlatti and Bach, next week’s concerts are a tribute to Broadway show tunes.Rahn said the students came up with the idea.“This year, we have the perfect combination of students to do a Broadway show,” she enthused.“They are so excited about it.They get into it right away.” She wasn’t kidding. In less than one minute after Rahn told them to get on their marks, the singers were in full swing with a medley of Andrew Lloyd Webber tunes, with lively accompaniment by Brigitte Poulin.Other tributes to be performed next week include a collection of Rodgers and Hammer-stein songs and a medley of tunes from the musical Crazy For You.These will be interspersed with solos such as ‘You Can’t Get A Man With A Gun” from Annie Get Your Gun, performed by Stutt, “Sunday” from Sunday In The Park With George by Heath, and “Maria” from West Side Story by Morgan Jones. The Estrie Young Singers will add their sweet voices by singing a few songs from The Sound of Music.Rahn said the choir has gotten an injection of youthfulness over the years.“There’s much more student involvement now.It used to be all community members.” POSITIVE LEADER’ Stutt and Heath give Rahn most of the credit for leading the choir with courage and confidence.“Nancy’s a positive leader. She’s not your typical conductor type.” said Stutt.“I’ve learned a tremendous amount.I watch Nancy’s dedication to what she does.I wouldn’t be National Youth Choir calibre if I wasn’t studying with her.If anything, it’s her love for what she does, you learn from that.” Heath, who graduated into the University Singers after «—llie Record—TOWNSHIPS WEEK— April 5-12, 1996 MUSIC Classical music education starts early By Elizabeth Renzetti TORONTO (CP) — Susan Hammond, who has planted the music of Bach and Handel in the heads of children around the world with her Classical Kids series of audiotapes and books, knows these kids are lost to pop music once they hit puberty.“We’re competing with a huge song-music industry,” says Hammond, sitting by the piano in the living room of her house in downtown Toronto.“-Songs tell you what to think. What I’m trying to do is create a model of seeing pictures in your mind.” She creates pictures by combining the composer’s music with a whimsical story drawn loosely from life.In Beethoven Lives Upstairs, for example, a young Viennese boy named Christoph is terrified by the “madman” who has moved into his mother’s house. The madman terrifies the maids, strews paper everywhere and thumps on the floor. The madman, Christoph eventually realizes, is wrestling with what will be his Ninth Symphony. On the tape, Christoph’s horror (and growing compassion for the deaf composer’s frustration) are revealed against a backdrop of Beetho- ven’s most familiar melodies. Those pieces are just the ticket for addicting fresh young ears. The Classical Kids series has sold more than 1.7 million copies in North America, including its spin-off children’s books and the Beethoven Lives Upstairs video and CD-ROM.Hammond has made a success of her formula since she first recorded Mr.Bach Comes to Call in 1988.The words and music began to come together as she was reading bedtime stories to her daughters, and noticed that a good one left them in a state resembling a trance. The criteria she had for her recordings were minimal: there should be a child at the centre, the language should be rich and elevating and the music had to be forefront, not just aural decoration to hang on the story.Hammond takes the historical facts of a composer’s life (that Handel gave his Messiah to an orphanage or that Tchaikovsky came to the United States to open Carnegie Hall), adds a lonely but sympathetic child as a foil, and sets it against the music.Although she talks about instilling the love of language and music equally in children, it’s clear that she is more pas- By Betsy Powell TORONTO (CP) — Scottish singer Shirley Manson was nervous about meeting Butch Vig and her future Garbage bandmates, but not because of the famed super-producer’s credentials.“I think she thought we’d be a bunch of fat old geezers in white leather trousers and cowboy hats drinking bottles of opera, is planning to close for a two-year renovation and reopen in time to honor Giuseppe Verdi. It seems only fitting. The 218-year-old opera house has recently come through some of its stormiest months, but these only seemed a reminder of the days when Verdi routinely railed at critics and even threatened to block the premiere of one of his works. After a season that almost didn’t begin because of a threatened strike, management has just announced the start of a series of imgor changes certain to rub off on the entire Italian opera world. From 1999 to 2001, the La Scala company will move out of its historic building across from the elegant arcade in the heart of this northern financial capital and into a 2,300-seat theatre to be built in what was once a factory district.Construction should begin in Instead, she works with writer Douglas Cowling.Earlier stories were written by Esther Kalman and Barbara Nichol.a year and last 20 months, allowing the company to recent fund-raising concert for the Venice opera house La Fenice, which was destroyed by fire Jan.29.La Scala will return to its home for its traditiorial seasonopening gala on Dec.7 — the feast day of Milan’s patron St.Ambrose — in 2001.That year is the 100th anniversary of Verdi’s death. The main aim of the renovation is to build alternating stages that will allow the company to prepare the next tracked down Manson, based in Edinburgh, Scotland, after Marker saw a video with her old band Angelfish.By 1994 Garbage was a four-piece unit.A self-titled debut album appeared on store shelves late last year, and the band’s been on the road ever since supporting it.The hard work has paid off.Catchy track Stupid Girl is the top single in the U.K.today and the CD has cracked Billboard’s Top 100.“We’re having fun with it, and as long as there seems to be a reason to do it and there’s an audience out there, we want to keep doing it.” When it comes to the inevitable questions about his past, Vig sighs but acknowledges the focus is unavoidable.“I’m really proud of the records I did and lucky some of the bands I worked with did so well. But like anybody you have a tendency to want to focus on what you’re doing.” Besides, Vig respects a kind of doctor-patient confidentiality.“In Europe a lot of people really bugged me about what ‘what was inside the mind of Kurt Cobain,’ ” the tortured Nirvana songwriter who ended his life almost two years ago with a shotgun blast.“They let their guard down and trust me to a certain extent not only with making a record but also with their personal lives and emotionally, so I’m just not going to talk about that stuff.” So Vig turns to the band’s first album, considered by some to be one of 1995’s most exciting rock debuts. The multi-textured album has pleasing sonic sounds and loops that create an atmospheric quality topped by Manson’s velvet, understated voice. The band explores tolerance and longing while parodying things like obsession, perversion and darkness. The song Only Happy When it Rains, for instance, juxtaposes a shiny pop melody with dark lyrics that Manson likes to ham up on stage.“My only comfort is the night gone black.I’m riding high upon a deep depression.I’m only happy when it rains.” Garbage plays Montreal on April 17.Tickets are available at all Admission outlets, and by calling (819) Collectors be wary of stamps from Third World countries To give you an idea of the sheer quantity of stamps issued worldwide to date, the Scott catalogues now come in six volumes, with another focussing on the United States. Each volume is eight-and-a-half inches by 11 inches by one-and-a-half inches thick.Combined, they represent millions and millions of stamps, a virtual impossibility to collect. While the major countries of the world have a yearly stamp program to commemorate people and events within their borders, many of the Third World countries and republics issue stamps commemorating events in other countries. Many of these are colourfully produced and marketed internationally.Stamp Corner By Peter McCarthy Some countries look upon stamps as an export and rely on the income from their sales. The philatelic purist is very much against these adhesives and some have gone to great lengths to have such stamps banned from exhibitions. My own feelings are somewhat mixed on the subject.A few years ago, for the World Cup of sailboat racing, a small island in the Pacific issued two or three sheets of stamps depicting almost every type of sail boat imaginable, plus souvenir sheets. They didn’t even have a ¦ ¦ Quel Visages! André Bernier is the proud father of a new current affairs tabloid in the Townships. The first copies of Visages came off the presses at the Record recently. As publisher and editor of the new monthly newspaper, Bernier attempts to reflect the diversity of the life in Sherbrooke and its surrounding area through articles and columns on news, politics, sports and culture. Each issue will also include a reproduction of a painting by a Townships artist. The April 1996 edition (Volume 1 Number 1) can be picked up for free at magazine stores, dépanneurs and other locations in the area.Readers may also pay for home delivery. The first cover is well-known local television personality France Beaudoin, host of Télé 7’s La vie en Estrie. For the past 30 years, Bernier — a journalism professor at Sherbrooke University — has worked for such media as the Journal de Sherbrooke, La Tribune, Le Miroir de VEstrie, Journal de Montréal, CHLT radio and Télé 7 in Sherbrooke, and CJMS radio in Montreal. He has also written three books of fiction. For more information about Visages, call (819) 562-6489.— Sunil Mahtani., This series of reptiles on stamps was issued by the African country Uganda.70014 boat entered in the race. What does a topical collector of sail boats do?Put out the big bucks or pass.On the other hand, some of these countries issue beautiful stamps of the flora and fauna of their region. Here are a few examples of people having benefited from stamps issued by these small countries: — Some years ago, a Railways on Stamps exhibit told the story of railroads from their beginnings. It included the history of railroads on the North American continent.Bhutan at the time had issued a beautiful set of stamps depicting Canadian railways for one of the major philatelic events that took place, I believe, in 1984.Both the turbo train and the present-day LRC train formed a part of the set.It brought the tale to modern-day railroading.— Anthropology and archaeology are well represented on stamps, including those depicting pre-historic animals.Maldives, St.Vincent and Grenada are just a few that have issued such stamps. The stamps alone will encourage a young person interested in this field to read and learn and gather knowledge prior to their actual studies.— A young person from Montreal will be entering a cetacean (the study of whales and manatee) exhibit in CAPEX ’96 this year, thanks in part to stamps frowned upon by purists. The exhibit earned a silver medal at the 1992 Montreal International Youth Exhibition.Last year, it was awarded a gold medal at the Royal in Quebec City.I believe most of these stamps have a place, providing some kind of discernment is used in collecting.Pick a topic, be selective of the stamps within that topic and disregard everything else. What is not appreciated by most experienced collectors are ads such as the one that appeared in The Gazette s March 2nd TV programming section of the paper. The tiny province of Abkhazia in the Soviet republic issued two inset stamps depicting Groucho Marx and John Lennon. It was featured on NBC’s Dateline and is billed as the hottest collectible around. They say it’s a limited edition of just thousands. How many thousands do they mean?Ten thousand or 999,000?You can have them for $9.72 US plus $3 postage and handling. That totals about $17 Canadian. There’s a catch though.Imagine, these stamps are so hot, you can only buy six sets. That’s six sets today and six sets tomorrow and another six sets every day for the next month. What a come on.Pity is these stamps will sell well. But in five years from now the buyers will be crying the blues when their so-called limited editions will bring them only a fraction of their investment.Collecting stamps is a hobby and while it’s impossible to collect every stamp ever issued, there’s a great deal of pleasure in topics and thematics. It enables you to aquire stamps from almost every country without actually trying to collect all of what the world issues in stamps.Just be careful what and from who you buy.Your comments and questions are always appreciated and may be sent to P.O.Box 688, Richmond, Quebec, JOB 2H0.The Hawksbill Turtle series was issued by Maldives, a country situated on the Indian Ocean.; MALDIVES rtf tu MALDIVES rtf ; MALDIVES si* l RfIO MALDIVES RMQ We deliver Call 569-9528 (Sherbrooke) 242-1188 A (Knowlton) ^ Recoi a The Record—TOWNSHIPS WEEK— April 5-12, 1996—9 TV WEEK SATURDAY MORNING 6:00 ® FAMILY MATTERS (D BUGS BUNNY & TWEETY © IRIS, THE HAPPY PROFESSOR 32 BABY HUEY (cnn) DAYBREAK ( DISC ) GUERILLA GARDENER (R) (fox) PAID PROGRAM (life) CANADIAN TRAVEL ( nw)NEDAA (rdT) BULLETIN DE SANTÉ (ÿtv) BALLOONER LANDING 6:30 ® NEWS FOR KIDS CD FAMILY MATTERS O 09 SALUT, BONJOUR!
