An idea from two students at Massey-Vanier to promote their favorite radio station ended up creating a buzz throughout the school. The efforts of students and staff actually resulted in the school winning 99 compact discs and a special Buzz Bash in February that will be hosted by disc jockeys from the Burlington (Vt.)-based Buzz 99.9.The Buzz, an alternative rock radio station, was holding a contest that challenged listeners to come up with innovative ways to promote the station. The grand prize was $10,000.The catch: Entrants had to be older than 18 to enter. So, level two students Willie Colley and Chris Craig decided to approach one of their favorite teachers, Shannon McGovern, to see if she could help out.“She was new and she looked like she would be one of those teachers who would do it,” Colley said.“She always has a smile on,” said Craig.“She’s a fun teacher.” Craig and Colley’s idea was to hold a school-wide day to promote the station, McGovern got a committee together with the help of Nancy Turiff and the student council and on Nov.26 students spent their lunch hour taking part in Buzz Day.“I was afraid it was going to be a big failure,” said Craig.“But it turned out really well.” The day featured a Buzz Bar, Buzz bake sale and Buzz display.Students were also asked to dress in the station’s colors, black and yellow. The school’s radio station tuned into 99.9, and students asked bus drivers to tune in their radios on the way to and from school.“Usually these guys have the bus radios tuned into country music or something,” said Craig.Proceeds from the bake sale went to Project Teddy Bear, which provides teddy bears for the needy during the Christmas season. The alternative rock station already had a strong following at the school, and Colley said it is the station of choice among students at Massey-Vanier.“Everybody I know listens to the Buzz,” said Colley. As a grand finale, some 200 students used their bodies to spell BUZZ 99.9 in the snow on the hill near the soccer field. To let the radio station know what happened the day was captured on video tape and camera. The images were then sent off to the radio station to be judged for the contest. On Dec.6, McGovern and several other staff members took along a video camera and headed to Burlington for the awards ceremony. They didn’t win the grand prize, but they did get the 99 CDs.But'because of their exceptional effort the radio station decided to throw in a Buzz Bash for the school. The event will be held Feb.6.“We had a really great day doing things together,” said McGovern.“And now we’re getting a major fundraiser for the school.” Some 200 Massey Vanier students used their bodies to spell BUZZ 99.9 in the snow on the hill near the soccer field.r.«•;» 20 yrs.experience INSTALLATION REPAIRS PRE-WIRING MAINTENANCE PLAN VISIT OUR BOUTIQUE AT THE COWANSVILLE SHOPPING CENTER DEC.12,13, 14,15 & DEC.21, 22 SI 4-243-0000 l -800-783-0933 fles /Foi 242-2233 !Y INTERNET Dona Id & Larry Gagné -a* AU VIRTUEL •Computers •Software •Mac PC compatible •Books Stax.•Electronic café Xxfi DENTHEATPF SALE & REPAIRS • CAFÉ -WTb-R: 2& - to not waste our time on speculations about him -but instead to honestly learn more about who he actually is.Reverend doesn Y speak for St.PauVs Dear Editor, The Dec.4, 1996 edition of your newspaper reported that the Knowlton United Church’s minister was organizing a Christmas celebration that might be shocking to some people. This is true.It is so controversial that we, the Corporation and people of St.Paul’s Anglican Church in Knowlton, would like to state clearly the truth we believe about the fatherhood of Jesus Christ. We state this belief at every service, either in the Nicene Creed or the Apostles’ Creed where we say, in part, “I believe in God, the Father almighty .I believe in Jesus Christ, his only son, our Lord.He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit Skate and Shinny program registration today KNOWLTON - A group of volunteers and the Town of Brome Lake Community Services have revived the Skate and Shinny program. If the weather cooperates, the program will kick off Jan.5 and continue until March 16 at the skating rinks of Knowlton Academy and St.Edouard School. The Skate and Shinny program is for boys and girls up to 11 years of age.Registration takes place today at 4:30 p.m.at the Legion Community Centre and is on a first-come, first-served basis. The cost is $8 for one child, $12 for two and $15 for three or more children.Anyone registering after today will have to pay a $5 surcharge per child. The Skate and Shinny program is also looking for parent volunteers to help out as coaches, assistants and referees.Anyone interested is asked to say Knowlton Tom Ransom and born of the Virgin Mary.” The authority for making these statements comes from the Gospels according to Matthew, chapter 1, verses 18 -21 and Luke, chapter 1, verses 26 - 38.We should add that we are not the only denomination of the Christian faith who state our beliefs in these same words. The Reverend Purdon did not claim to speak for the United Church as a whole, but neither does he speak for St.Paul’s, Knowlton.Danny Foster, The Corporation and the people of St.Paul’s Anglican Church Knowlton mention that fact on the registration form. The Legion Community Centre is located at 383 Knowlton Road, Knowlton. For more information, please call the community centre at (514) 242-2020.BROME slake PUBLIC NOTICE To all ratepayers of the above mentioned municipality, 1.Please be advised that the Town Hall will have the following holiday schedule: OPEN at its regular hours from 8:00 a.m.to 4:30 p.m.on December 23rd, 24th, 30th and 31st, 1996.CLOSED on December 25th, 26th, 27th, 1996 and January 1st, 2nd and 3rd, 1997 2.The regular Council meeting will be held on January 6th, 1997 at 8:00 p.m.3.Please also be advised that during the Christmas holidays, the schedule for household garbage pick-up will be as follows: Tuesdays' pick-up will remain on its regular day: December 24th, 1996 December 31st.1996 Wednesday's pick-up will be done on the following days: December 26th, 1996 January 2nd, 1997 Given at Town of Brome Lake This 18th day of December 1996 Catherine Bouchard Town Clerk la caisse populaire de Waterloo 7** SIEGE SOCIAL 4990 RUE FOSTER / C.P.200 WATERLOO (514) 539-1023 CENTRE DE SERVICES 459 RUE KNOWLTON / C.P.449 VILLE DE LAC BROME (514) 242-1270 sports/experts HORS IA LOI SALOMON â THE!
