The Dominion Cash Box A Miss Daily Charged With Writing Threatening Letters.Coaticook, May 11.—Mr.Edward R.Smith, of this town, is feeling much easier to-day, since the arrest of Miss Bella Dailey.She was taken into custody yesterday afternoon by Mr.Silas if.Carpenter, jr., of Carpenter & Crow, the principals of the Canadian Secret Service in Montreal.For some time Mr.Smith has been receiving threatening letters, and unable to find out who sent them, he went to Montreal and asked Messrs.Carpenter A Crow to aid him in finding out who his hidden enemy w as.Mr.Carpenter came out, and after a short but vigorous investigation managed to obtain sufiicient proof that Miss Dailey was the culprit, and arrested her.After hèr arrest she confessed to him that she was the author of the letters, and she had writien them because she hoped that Mr.Smith would marry her.Before Magistrates ShurtlefT and Gendron, she pleaded guilty yesterday, and was remanded till to-day, but it is expected that she will change her plea to one of “not gully** to-day, and that she will obtain a lawyer, and by a sensational trial try to make Mr.Smith feel sorry that he had her arrested.The entire town is looking forward with interest to the result.CASE HAS BEEN SETTLED.Coaticook.May 11.—The above case was settled out of Court, each party paying their own costs, and the defendant bound over to keep the peace for a year.NOTES FROM COATICOOK.Mr.John Ewing of Melbourne spent Sunday in town.Mrs.Trennolme is visising her son, Dr.E.N.Trenholme, at Island Pond.Mr.and Mrs.Otis ShurtlefT celebrated the 25th anniversary of their wedding on Friday last, May 10th.A very pleasant family gathering took place in the evening, when a number of their relatives were present to wish them many years more of happy wedded life.Mrs.(Col.) ten mouths up to the end of April shows a balance of revenue over ordinary exi>enditui e of $10,370,837.The revenue is $41,080,303, as against $40,880,220 last year, and the expenditure for the same i>eriod is set down as $31,612,400, as against $28,703,783 in the same period of 1000.There is also an increase in the revenue for the month of April alone amount ing to $40,000, and an increase in the expenditure of $242,000.The outlay on capital account for the the ten months’ i>eriod was $8,000,-404, as against $6,717,153 in tin same months of 1000.The statement for the ten months’ iieriods Telephone Bill.Ottawa, May 10.The bill permitting the Bell Telephone Company to increase its capital stock from $5,000,000 to $10,000,000 will never pass the Senate in its present form it its opponents can prevent it.A most determined fight will be waged against the measure, and even if it succeeds in scraping through the upper Chamber it will still have to run the gauntlet of the House.There its doom is certain, unless the company agrees to accept amendments w hich are deemed to be necessary in the public interest.The first skirmish took place this afternoon, when the bill as amended in committee came up for consideration.Senator Kirchhoffer moved concurrence in the clause compelling the company to supply telephones on application to residents within 500 feet of their lines.Municipal Council of Township of Compton.At a regular session of the municipal Council, held last Monday in Postoffice Hall, Compton village, there were present : Mr.John Man-son, Mayor, and Councillors Boudreau, Whitcomb, Edwards, 1 lad-lock and Gervais.The minutes of last session were read and confirmed.Councillor Boudreau and the Secretary-Treasurer were instructed to get Mrs.St.Pierre the day it was décidée! to continue the case till June 18, in order that more evidence might be obtained.The prisoner was held without bail, and the witnesses ordered to recognize in the sum of $500 J.II.Watson, of the Washington County Court, to-day sentenced Artuero Bonaco to serve not less than twenty-one nor more than twenty five years in state prison for attempting to assassinate Patrick Brown, chief of police, of Barre, on December 20 last.Bonaco was one of the so-called anarchists who created a disturbance at a dance of Italians in Barre and shot the chief later from ambush,
