You see, this Is the very first shop I’ve tried!— London Fun.Trial by Jury, Trial by jury is claimed as the birthright of Britons and the bulwark ot their freedom. But it is very imperfect m practice and requires many alterations. Some drawbacks were self-evident in a trial tor damages against the Grand Trunk Railway Co.which came before Judge Archibald one day this week.Of course, every unfortunate man of the 18 on the panel had duly received a summons to serve his King and country—except those who were dead or out of the country ! But after a long delay only seven out of the necessary twelve were present, and the judges, lawyers and witnesses had to separate without a trial.Of course, to the judges and lawyers this did not matter; they got paid for appearing, and the latter certainly would not lose anything by the postponement of the case.It may also be claimed that the subpoenaed witnesses w ho had learned by previous bitter experience, got their subpoenas “marked,” and so were credited with the munificent fee of $1—and the proud consciousness of having performed the duty of good citizens. But why should not the jurors w ho failed to obey the summons of the Court be punished for hindering the course of justice by their absence?Mr.R.C.Smith called the attention of the Court, and it appeared that the list of those qualified to serve as jurymen in the hands of the Prothonatary, included not only many men, such as senators, consuls, etc.,who could refuse to serve, but also not a few names of well known men who have been incompetent to serve because they died a considerable time ago.And the Prothonotary appears to have no power to strike any name off his fist, even if he knows that the owner is dead. The lawyers on each side have, of course, the right to a certain number but neither will waste an objection on a dead man.The learned judge very properly said that some change was imperative, and that some means of having the lists approximately correct should be adopted. But jn the meantime justice is matle light of, and the law becomes a laughing-stock, and witnesses feel that they are being fooled when ordered to attend a trial by j ury.—Commercial Gazette, Montreal, His Taak.George—With the assurance of your love I could conquer the world.Grace—That will not be necessary All you have to do is to conquer papa.—London Tit-Bits.Mr.P.Guillemette, under date of Jan •8th, 1901, writes : Dear Sirs,—For ton years I suffered from pains across my back, both side* and between my shoulder*.In fact at time* I was doubled up with pain, and my urine was highly colored.I *aw Doan’* Pill* advertised, no procured four boxe* and must *ay they have effected A complete cure.I Why should a novel writer be an extraordinary looking animal?Because of his tale coming out of his head The man who lives for himself alone Is apt to be neglected by the world at large.—CliFugo N»\v*.It L proposed that King Ed wan be protdhimed “ King of Canada. We object. If Canada is to be men tinned in the Sovereigns list of * „ ax.wu .pm- titles, let him be known as “ Lord owe my pr.wnt good health to i of Canada." withheld. In a pen he has half a dozen or so ordinary field mice.“’They are the most sociable pets I ever had," he remarked, “and auy oue of them will rise to attention as he hears my step approach the pen.1 have had these young ones about six month* They don't live long when cooped up, and they will come freely to my hand to eat or drink. Some of them are so tame that they will clUnb to my shoulder and display not the slightest alarm at being touched. They haven't acquired so much faith In all humanity, however, aud have refused to trust any one else so far.“While mice eat a great deal for an animal so small when food Is abundant, they can exist for a surprising long time with next to nothing.Any one whose house has been invested with mice and who had passed weary weeks when everything that possibly could serve as food was carefully urn dor lock aud key, finally calling tq service an active ferret, will appreciate this fact.He is a mighty aggressive and tireless forager after food, not hesitating at walls or similar obstructions, through which he patiently gnaws a path.As n test of persistence iu this line 1 hung a basket of food from the celling by a rope and after a week’s fast placed a mouse at a hole In the ceiling above the basket. He descended some eight feet or more on a slender cord and safely reached bis haven, later climbing up again.“All of my mice 1 have taken from nests about the premises and notice that they invariably seek shelter below or behind something, never in so exposed a locality as almost any othoi animal would select For a nest paper, cloth or any soft material seemi to satisfy, aud tho exceeding flnenett with which it is chopped suggests some mighty artistic work with their teeth.’1 A VERY PARTICULAR BIRD.If the Bnthlnir Dish Didn’t Salt Him, lie Went Lnwaahed.“Birds have as much character aa human beings,” said a specialist oh birds.“Some are the most arrant little aristocrats, while others are regular little plebeians.I had a little fellow some time ago who, despite all my efforts, would not bathe. Each morning when, with his white porcelain tub In my hand, 1 approached his cage, be would resolve himself into the sulkiest, dreariest little hall of feathers you can possibly Imagine.1 coaxed and pleaded; I even bribed.Bathe he would not.80 consistent was he in his determination not to bathe that 1 named him Tramp. One morning I broke the tub, and in its place 1 took a shallow blue aud white dish of Japanese ware.Tramp eyed me for a moment with all his old hostility, and then ns he caught sight of the pretty dish he flew down from his perch with chirps of joy and darted Into tho water before 1 could take my hand from the cage.“I had found the way to his heart, 6 his morning hath now became a ally source of Joy to both of us.But ont fatal morning I broke the blue and white dish.In an apologetic manner 1 brought to Tramp once more the regulation white hath dish, hoping that his cleanly habits wore by this tlmo so ingrained that he would overlook the prosaic appearance of his tub.Not so.An apgry flutter of wings, a threatening little beak, ft perfect tempest of shrill cheeps and twitterings and thon sulky silence on the topmost perch.“So It w’ent on till 1 secured auother blue and wiiite dish and then peace and harmony and morning bath! again.” Railroad Man*s Pray#»».An old railroad man, having been
