the Chinese Communists and Nationalists traded shells in the Formosa Straits were the U S.ambassador to Poland, Jacob Beam, and Chinese ambassador Wang Ping-nan.Nationalists Prepare To Run Blockade Again US Air Force Helps TAIPEI, Formosa (API—Heartened by their first success in piercing the Communist artillery curtain around Quemoy, the Chinese Nationalists assembled another convoy today to supply the besieged island fortress. The Nationalists announced the first sizeable amounts of supplies in a week got through to the Quemoy Islands Sunday by sea and air with U.S.escorts.U.S.and Nationalist spokesmen announced American air force planes flew protective cover for the Quemoy supply operations.Nationalist transports also parachuted supplies to the island complex nestling near the mainland for the first time since the Communists tightened their blockade early this month, REPORTERS BARRED Reporters were barred from visiting the Pescadores, Matsu and Quemoy islands. This hint that some sort of major operation might be under way came as a new sea convoy was forming at the Pescadores island supply base 30 miles from Formosa and 70 miles from Quemoy. The Nationalists also stepped up their propaganda war against the Peiping government. The Nationalist air force said its planes dropped millions of leaflets on the mainland Sunday in 12 provinces, including Hopei where the Communist capital of Peiping is located.Sunday's successful convoy was directed by U.S.amphibious experts.OUTSIDE LIMIT As usual, escort ships from the U.S.7th Fleet stopped at the three-mile limit and last offshore. The American jets covering the operation were believed under similar orders. The supply ship that got through was a Second World War LST (landing ship, tank) a much larger vessel than the LSM’s (landing ship, medium), which the Communists started a 1.600-shell barrage, the Nationalists said wheeled vehicles raced ashore with the supplies and the LST withdrew.BLAST HOLES The shelling blasted holes in the side of the old landing ship and fragments severed the cables on her doors.Even the temporary loss of a vessel would be a stiff price for the 90-ship Nation alist navy. The LST was towed out to sea and to her base in the Pescadores. The air drop was made over little Quemoy, two miles closer to the mainland and usually dependent on small boats from big Quemoy for its supplies. The United States meanwhile was pouring war goods into Formosa to defend this main Nationalist bastion against any Communist attack.4 Years For Race Rioters LONDON (Reuters) — Nine youths who set out on “a niggerhunting expedition" which touched off the recent racial riots in London were each sentenced to four years in prison here today.Passing sentence the judge at Old Bailey Court said: “It was you men who started the whole of this violence.” The youths, aged between 17 and 20, each pleaded guilty to wounding and assaulting Negroes. They were alleged to have attacked five men during what one of the youths described as a “nigger-hunting expedition.” The prosecution said this was Talks between the two came after 73 earlier meetings in a series previously held in Geneva between diplomats of the two nations and dating back to 1955.DON'T SAY MUCH An American embassy slate ment Sunday night announcing today's resumption of the talks, confined itself to outlining the time (10 a m.EDT) an< place of the discussions without mentioning terms of reference Main American aims in earlier negotiations were to obtain from the Chinese a commitment to renounce the use of force and to obtain the release of U.S.citizens detained on the Chinese mainland. The Americans insisted specifically on including Formosa in any such renunciation.“INTERNAL" PROBLEM The Chinese also sought renunciation of the use of force but excluded Formosa as "an internal Chinese problem.’’ The new series comes at a time of extreme tension in the Formosa Straits.Communist China has been bombarding the Nationalist-held offshore islands since Aug.23 with only token retaliation by Nationalist guns.In a speech last Thursday, President Eisenhower said there would be no appeasement in the Formosa Straits dispute and the United States would not back down from its commitments to Nationalist China. The negotiations here come only 24 hours before the United Nations General Assembly meeting where the Far East crisis is expected to be debated."t H 16-Year-Old Held For 2 Slayings VICTORIA (CP)—A 16-year-old youth, injured when the truck he was driving overturned during a police chase, is under guard in hospital here in connection with the fatal shooting of two men and the beating of a woman Saturday in a suburban home. The youth was arrested Sunday when his vehicle plunged into a ditch near a roadblock 20 miles north of here, about 20 hours after the bloody rampage in a spacious residence at west-side Saturday evening were Charles Mudge, 30, owner of the house, and his father-in-law, John Brand, 70.Brand apparently was killed as he watched television and Mudge died in the basement after a desperate demonstrated by its often mysterious movements that it will not long tolerate Governor Orval Faubus’ act.But the agency’s spokesmen refused to reveal how the department plans to employ the small army of U.S.marshals it gathered here.Nor would they disclose tactics of the beefed up federal attorney staff.CLOSE VIRGINIA SCHOOL Another southern state simultaneously closed a high school for the same reason. This was in Warren County, Va., where 17 Negroes sought to enroll.Simmering Little Rock racial troubles boiled over Sunday night when the U.S.Supreme Court ruled that Central High could not delay integration as requested by the school hoard and approved by the Little Rock federal district court.Within hours, Faubus ordered Central High and three other city high schools closed even before they opened for the fail term. This includes Horace Mann, an all-Negro institution. He said he acted because Central High faced forcible integration and he feared violence and disorder would Supreme Court, South Put Ike On The Spot By JAMES MARLOW WASHINGTON (AP) — President Eisenhower is on the spot, put there by the Supreme Court and southern states. For years he tried to soft-talk the problem of school integration. It didn’t work. Now he has to act.The court, in ruling on Little Rock last Friday, did more than say mob violence and community opposition can't block its ban on public school segregation.UP TO IKE The nine justices, by their unflinching stand, said in effect to the Eisenhower administration: The next step-enforcing our order —is up to you.Enforcement—or the lack of it —was a central theme in the court's hearings on the Little and state authorities for not preserving order.Eisenhower, in the four years since the court’s original ruling that segregation by race was unconstitutional, had given no indication his justice department had plans for coping with local defiance of the court.CALLED FOR PATIENCE Instead, he kept calling for patience, although in those four years hardly any integration had occurred in the south. It was as if he had set himself the policy of not irritating southerners. But while he talked patience and understanding, the uouthern states were bitterly erecting massive barriers of defiance to the court with new laws of their own for blocking integration. There had to be a showdown sometime. Now it’s come in Ar- their forces in gas grenades guns.If the governor expected any immediate startling developments involving him it was not apparent during the night. His mansion was guarded by a routine number of state troopers. He was expected sooner or later to open Central High and the other institutions as private schools under lease agreements and with the state footing the bills. Many expected him to delay such action until after Oct.7, date of an election in which voters will ballot on whether they want to keep the public schools closed or want them integrated.BARIS (AP).Nationalist fire brand Jacques Soustelle, Premier dr Gaulle’s information minister, was hit by flying glass today when Algerian terrorist gunmen fired on his ear.The attack think of the Stom-panato slaying the Trujillo giftgiving and the Debbie-Eddie Liz triangle. The latest of the stories was a shocker even for those close to the Reynolds - Fisher - Taylor triumvirate. But it must be more so for the general public. The reason is that the usual fan magazine foofaraw has built up i!lu sions about the three principals, illusions that have been shattered in the light of events. Here is a more calculated view of the trio, taken from a closeup angle: 1. Eddie is a show biz veteran who was singing at New York's Copacabana when he should have been in high New York with the luscious- widow of his best friend. \\Êtià GETS HER OWN WAY 2. The public's impression of Elizabeth Taylor has sometimes been that of a girl whose life was ruled by other delight to satisfy her every whim, whether it was cancelling a social engagement or buying a diamond necklace.A girl with her attributes obviously could get whatever she wanted, including possibly Eddie Fisher.3. Debbie Reynolds has been famed for her portrayals of sweet young things.Actually, she is one of the shrewdest of the young stars. She is willing to fight it out with studio heads or Ticats’ fellow-clubs in the Big Four union.Sunday the 1957 Grey Cup winners carried their missionary work down to Philadelphia to polish off Ottawa Rough Riders 24-18 in a scholarly-but-unexciting display. That exercise gave Ti-cats five wins in as many games and a six-point lead over Ottawa and Montreal Alouettes, each with two wins and three losses.Montreal proved to to 73 yards that contributed four singles to the Hamilton total.A pair of 69-yard efforts supplied half the Tiger-cats’ scoring. The first came with Hamilton trailing 15-7 in the third quarter, when Ron Howell made a stirring f)9-yard touchdown run.In the final quarter Tommy Grant eluded Ottawa’s George Brancato to snare a Bernie Faloney pass for a pass-and-run touchdown of equal distance.McDougall scores Gerry McDougall had supplied Hamilton’s first touchdown in the first quarter after Skippy Gian celli scooped up an Ottawa fumble on the Rough Rider one.Import Norm flecker kicked two converts to complete the Hamilton total.Quarterback Tom Dimitroff ARGOS BLOW LEADS The Alouettes produced a fourth - quarter touchdown to top the befuddled Argonauts by the margin of a second-quarter field goal by Bill Bewley Saturday. The Argos had leads of 14-0 and 21-17 but couldn’t hold them.Montreal’s line three times stopped the Toronto halfbacks a yard from goal. The Argonauts started off in fine style with two touchdowns within 11 minutes of play.C.R.Roberts collected both.Doucette played almost the entire game.He was out briefly after he was shaken up by a tackier. The Alouettes bounced right back, however.Eteheverry fired a 33-yard pass to Hal Patterson on the Toronto one and later a short touchdown pitch to Red O’Quinn.BEWLEY BOOTS Eteheverry personally added the second Montreal touchdown in the second quarter and Bewley booted his field goal.Argos regained the lead in the final quarter with Dave Mann carrying over from the five.A 22-yard
