Inauguration Of CHLT-TV Significant Step For This Area Channel 7 Has Great Power Like radio, motion pictures, the automobile and the airplane television is gradually becoming part of our way of life and already its influence is being felt.Like all modern discoveries and inventions some thought it was just a passing fancy and would pass into oblivion: but it is obvious now that television is indeed here to stay. For Sherbrooke and the Eastern Townships the inauguration of CHLT-TV carries with it great significance. For many in this area, television is no novelty for programs have been available for some time from Montreal and several American stations. But for the first time the Eastern Townships will sec its voice transmitted into thousands of homes through this area. The character of a regional centre, which Sherbrooke has maintained over the years, will be felt even more and her influence will stretch over a vast area. Thanks to the considerable power of CHLT-TV, the regional boundaries will be surpassed, the voice of the Eastern Townships will not be limited to 12 counties, but will reach several adjacent areas such as the Richelieu valley, the city of Montreal and suburbs, and a section of the St.Maurice Valley and Beauce. What is more, communication from one side of the border to the other will now be a two-way street.Canadian viewers are able to receive programs from Mount Washington, Burlington and Plattsburg, but now residents of Vermont, New Hampshire and part of New York wrill be able to receive programs being transmitted .over CHLT-TV.On examination of a map of the south-west portion of the Province, one can see the area covered by CHLT-TV.The Queen City of the Eastern Townships becomes the centre of a vast circle whose theoretical limitations are Valleyfield to the west, Shawinigan to the north and St.Georges de Beauce at 1 the east.At the interior of the circle is found more than half of Quebec’s population, teaming with industrial ac-i tivity, where economic life ; is going through constant development. This development is only starting and in a few years from now important changes are bound to take place. This will mean that Sherbrooke, included in the area of development, will also grow in important as a commercial and industrial centre. If, thanks to the 300,000 watt power o f CHLT-TV, 2,-000,000 viewers can be reached, it is not hard to imagine that ten years from new.this audience will be considerably increased. In conjunction with this development, the presence of a TV station can only have tha most happy results, both socially and economically. The setting on foot of such an enterprise can be considered is two ways.First, it is proof that Sherbrooke and the Eastern Townships are sufficient in importance to be able to support a television station.Second, that those responsible for the launching of such an enterprise have confidence in the progress of the city and the entire region.f O* u< , BOtS RADIO vein»-res; DELISIO AM’kMv &¦% umtsm 4 Special London DRY GIN -— e» - ' — » ¦ ¦- \\'.'v u ¦—-F- fv —, -v -**• r— * 'iVVïAy.rvV-.—TWfnr •*—- ** 1 ¥X l 1 m TkB&t * with IIaLoLKiIIT *77t&o^tuJij!!yexcMMttoï)jiM in f/t>Mtmÿ! * fr.Elinne Fortier, women's commentator at CHLT-TV, will have a regular show devoted to My lady's kitchen.h With the origin of television in Canada in 1953, La Tribune started taking steps toward the eventual opening of a TV station to serve Sherbrooke and the Eastern Townships.Negotiations were undertaken with both federal authorities and the Governors of Radio - Canada. At the same time provincial government officials were approached, because it was evident that the ideal site for a transmitter was Mount Or ford.Mount Orford is situated in a national park, and is ^ the property of the provin-; cial government. It was ! necessary, therefore, for La jTribune representatives to ^ gain permission to build a I tower on this site and to obtain some sort of lease for the location. These talks, which required a great num-| ber of interviews, visits and exchange of correspondence, started June 1 5, 195 3, when Hon.J.S.Bourque, minister ! of Lands and Forests and Hydraulic Resources, present-I ed the official request of La ; Tribune for a TV statiort to the government. On the 18th of September, Premier Maurice Duplessis, in a letter addressed to La j 1 ribune, said his government was disposed to grant the re-quested permission and | would allow the construction of a tower on Mount Orford. In the meantime, talks were being held with the Minister of Fish and Game, Hon.Camille Pouliot and his assistant L.A.Richard, with the goal of obtaining a lease for the location of the tower. On January 7, 1954 La Tribune received its license from the Ministry of Transport, carrying the approval of the CBC, giving authorization to build and manage a TV station. On June 8, 1954 a letter from the Hon.Maurice Duplessis, explained that since Mount Orford was a national park, it was necessary to pass a special law in order to rent the required space.Since the law could only be passed in session, negotiations were suspended until the fall of 1954.But it was necessary to wait until Jan.2 7, 1955 until bill 39 was adopted in Quebec, authorizing the government to rent the land.Once again it was necessary to wait while negotiations continued until June 1955, when the lease was signed between the Provincial Government and La Tribune, giving the latter the right to erect and use a portion of Mount Orford, W hen this important document was signed, a contract was negotiated w-ith Bosco Construction of Magog for the construction of a road to Mount Orford * summit and the erection of a building to house the necessary equipment. This contract wa* signed in September between the Construction Company president J.Eugene Belanger and La Tribune authorities. On Sept.15, Bosco Construction started on the long and arduous task of building a road.It w-as necessary to execute plans drawn by engineers eighteen years ago.But these plans stopped a* the 2,000 foot altitude, where nature had left a plateau.Mr.Belanger, who directed the work himself, succeeded in tracing a route for the remaining part of the road. From there on it took days and days of hard work blasting through solid rock,-uprooting trees and brush and generally levelling tho ground to attain the summit.Work progressed slowly and the days went by.Soon frost and the first snow increased the difficulties.On.many occasions before reaching the ground, up to 12 feet of snow had to be first removed. The temperature was 20 degrees colder at all times. Finally, in order not to delay work, gravel was laid on the snow and then dynamited.Tons and tons of solid rock were moved and Bosco Construction Continued on Page 14 BUYING WHOLE STORY!
