becoming more and more violent, smacking of the old, cold war flavor of the Stalin era.Just this week, Premier Bulganin denounced the doctrine as an insane plan for world domination, a colonial trap prepared by the oil monopolies and a threat of enslavement for the Arab peoples.Pravda called the Eisenhower Doctrine an imperialist plan by Ameri-« an warlords to supplant the old colonial powers in the Middle East.A t steady stream of warnings against American intentions has been poured out of Moscow for the benefit of the Arab nations, and anybody else who cares to listen. On other fronts, the Russians have warned European members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization that they faced atomic retaliation if they permitted the United States to set up atomic bases on their territory.West Germany's Chancellor Adenauer was warned by Bulganin that continued association with NA IO and the U.S.lessened the chances of Germany reunification. In the Unit ed Nations.a Russian demand for debate of American "aggressive actions has been rejected. This new Soviet offensive has culminated with the replacement of Cold War Dimitri Shepilov as Foreign Minister by Andrei Gromyko, the Stalinist career diplomat who became notorious as chief Soviet delegate at the United Nations for saying "nyet” and sometimes walking out.The revival of the cold war comes at a time when the Western alliance is in a state of disrepair. The Suez split has been followed by the British decision to cut her NAIO forces in West Germany from 80,000 men to around 50.000.France is considering a similar cutback. The nations of Western Europe, including Britain and France, are showing more interest in an economic federation that would lessen their dependence on the United States. The sense of urgency that led to the establishment of NATO has been dissipated. The long period of cold war crisis that followed the breakdown of the East-West alliance after the Second World War has perhaps led to a more blase attitude on the part of Western European nations.Nevertheless, the increasing belli gerence of the Soviet Union may lead to a stiffening of resistance.Western Europe can he expected to show more independence of North America in the future, and a strong European federation allied with the United States may turn out to be the best bulwark yet against Communism.Fire Department's Record The Sherbrooke Fire Department's record deserves study by all citizens of this community.1 he annual report released by Director Percy Donahue reveals that property losses in 1956 were sharply cut.compared with ihe previous year.More interesting is the fact that on a per capita basis, losses last year were $1.42 per person in Sherbrooke while the per capita loss of property in Canada amounted to $4.8 3.Nevertheless a property loss in 1956 of $85,693.28 is a matter of major importance. This is a loss which the community can ill afford. The main causes of fires were defective chimneys, oil fires and electrical fires, in that order.During the year 36 people were injured or overcome by smoke.A highlight of the year for the Fire Department is Fire Prevention Week, when an intensive educational and inspection campaign is carried out.The fact that fire is still such a major cause of property loss and injury underlines the need for year-round alertness to its dangers.Still high on the list of causes of fires are carelessness, overloaded electrical wiring and worn out equipment. The Sherbrooke Fire Department requires the co-operation of every citizen to carry on its fine record. This And That The local fire department reports , that two fires last year were started by television sets, Probably those old guns the cowboys are always shooting off got overheated.? ? Ik A Canadian brain surgeon says that memory is like a continuous strip of motion picture film within the brain. We wish they would put in subtitles so we could remember names, it is i reported from Frankfurt, is on the verge of introducing aromas to movie houses. The day may be imminent when noses as well as eyes and cars will be required equipment for the full enjoyment of a film.At present the film appears to be concentrating on the diffusion of perfumes and scents As the languid lady loafs on the lounge the nostrils of the audience will be conscious ot a forbidden fragrance, or as ( the lovers wander through the ! woods the spectacle will be no | less titillating than the arbo | real aromas. But the possibilities do not end there. From perfumes and scents to other odors is a natural step.A scene of a house on fire will smell like a fire; the odor of fijh will exude from a fishing village, and no scene of an ox revolving whole on -the spit will be authentic v ithout the redolence of roasting beef. There is a tantalizing thought—the movie house pervaded with the fragrances 61 : newly-made bread and hot blueberry pies, of cooking hams and turkeys, of baking casseroles and steaming stews and savory sauces.A scene of a Thanksgiving dinner or Henry VIH al tabi»; will be almost too appetizing a trial to endure. And what with three-dimensional pictures it may not be a trial at all.Moviegoers will not merely see the custard pie, smell it and hear it as it Hies through the air, but taste il as it spatters on the face ol the down—at which point people wilt recall with nostalgic sighs the unintrusive, silent and odorless movies of the Mack Sennett period.PARLIAMENT’S DIGNITY.(Ottawa Journal) Mr.Speaker Beaudoin, press reports say, lias emerged from a period of sad despair to try to recapture the authority which the Government and its followers snatched from him last session; has been “cracking down" on irrelevant or “loaded” questions during “Orders of the Day.” All who care for Parliament will wish Mr.Beaudoin well.Yet the truth is, we fear, that the wounds inflicted upon Parliament last session cannot be healed quickly by some sudden penitential return to propriety.Bagehot once said that the essence of Parliament was its dignity. When the Government last session permitted and indeed all but encouraged its followers to behave not as grown men but as boys on a baseball sand lot, they were not only murdering Parliament’s rules; they were butchering its dignity.Lawlessness and vulgarity took over last May and June, left marks on Parliament which are with it yet. They will be %vith it, we fear, until mercifully its days come to an end.PREPOSTEROUS (T.D.F.in Ottawa Citizen) Discussing the possibility of Hon.Lester Pearson succeeding to the premiership, a voice on the morning bus called it “preposterous to think that this whole continent could be run by two fellows named Mike and Ike.MAIN INDUSTRY Agriculture, giving employment to 100,000,000 persons, contributes nearly half of India’s total national income. The Deal (Manchester Guardian) President Eisenhower has given King Sand a bronze desk set as a memento of his visit to Washington; it is at any rate a more pacific gift than the silver-plated pistol that Colonel Neguib received from Mr.Dulles.But he is to receive American military aid, too; the singularly vague communique issued last week did not make clear how much.It is to be provided, presumably, to enable him to defend his kingdom against Com-munist-i n s p i r e d aggression, and no doubt if Russian volunteers appeared on the desert skyline it would be used; the protector of the Moslem holy cities, who has no diplomatic relations with Moscow, did not need a trip to America to make him anti-Communist.But he is much more concerned about the Israelis than the Russians, and until the Arab-Israeli dispute is settled—that is farther ahead than anybody can see—every additional rifle in the Middle East is a source of danger.Next to Israel King Saud probably hates Britain most, and the encouragement of American arms may strengthen his resolution in the quarrel over the Buraimi oasis. The Iman of the Yemen, too, may feel bolder. However, pre- sumably President Eisenhower j knew all this before he drove to the airport to welcome the : King.As the sensibly said; “You have got to meet face to ; face the people with whom | you disagree at times to deter- ! mine whether or not there is a j way of working out the diffc- | renccs.” We do not know how much | aid Saudi Arabia is to get, nor ! what America is to get in return, expect a renewal of the lease of the base at Dhahran. But whatever the communique hides, King Sand's public utterances suggest that- his host has gained his main objective. He has convinced the King | that American intentions in the | Middle East are pacific—noncolonising—while Soviet propaganda is busy -saying the reverse.Since he came to America as the envoy, in a sense, of his Syrian and Egyptian i Allies the Americans may after all have swallowed their scruples to some purpose. We shall be able to judge better from Colonel Nasser's behaviour in the next few months.MANY BAKERIES Value of products of commcr- j cial bakeries in
