and so it will be like getting something for nothing. But in other communities other politicians are promising other post offices, bridges, roads, health services, larger family allowances and so on — and getting support because of these promises.Of course all of (he promises have added up to more taxes — to a point that Canadians are concerned, finally, about their mounting tax burden. As a result, politicians strive to shift the blame and the burden from municipal to provincial to federal government. The quarrel is limited to taxing authority, and to division of the tax revenues. No word is heard in favor of cutting spending, and thus cutting taxation. It is a cynical per formance, (ab.) 30 Take vengeance 32 Put forth 34 Music instruction 85 Deprive of food 36 -Vegas, Nevada 37 "-Marie” 39 Smile broadly 40 Discharge 41 Brazilian coin 42 Consent 45 Gained knowledge 49 Gloomiest 51 Night before an event 52 Noises 53 Disorder of the skin 54 Moral wrong 55 Stain • r~ 5“ y T- l r~ S" 1 iT“ ! h ir- t b r~ J i) ii U. 5T TT îv TT ST L 8 M H « j* J7 TT’ K à fi nr PT « i#.1 (7 54 f! a 5n w 11 II The castle's oldest building is diminutive St.Margaret’s Chapel, built in 1076 by Queen Margaret, the Saxon wife of Malcolm Canmore.son ol King Duncan who had been murdered by Macbeth.Obviously the castle rock had been a stronghold before that, for among the chapel foundations are traces of Roman building.Somewhat later in date arc the Great Hall, which is believed to have been used for meetings of the earliest Scottish parliaments, and the Royal Apartments which are entered through a doorway over which hangs the cipher of Mary Queen of Scots and Darnley and the date 1566.The newest building of all, the Scottish National War Memorial, has an international reputation. The memorial consists of a hall of honour and a central shrine.* * * There is an alcove for each Scottish regiment, including the Canadian Scottish regiments. In the central shrine, standing on the bare rock which is the highest point of the castle, a green marble of remembrance carries a steel casket guarded by four kneel-’ing angels. In the casket are contained all the names of Scotland’s men who died :n the attmpt to safeguard the world’s peace. The United Services Mu- seum contains the brilliant succession of uniforms and battle weapons of Scottish regiments of many reigns. Some of these, too, have been known in Canada, during her early years of struggle. The regalia of Scotland are kept in the crown chamber at the castle. The Scottish crown is claimed to be older than many of the crown jewels at the Tower of London—it dates from the time of Robert the Bruce 1274-1329.ENCHANTED LAND (Rear Admiral Richard E.Byrd) At the bottom of this planet lies an enchanted continent in the sky, like a pale sleeping princess.Sinister and beautiful she lies in her frozen slumber, her billowy white robes of snow weirdly luminous with amethysts and emeralds of ice, her dreams iridescent ice halos around the sun and moon, her horizons painted with pastel shades of pink, gold, green and blue.Such is Antarctica, luring land of everlasting mystery.THE CHARM OF THIS DAY (Toronto Telegram) Said the little girl, as her aunt led her from the skating rink: “I like swimming.” For her, as for grownups, winter has been long and summer with its prospect of lakes and beaches seems distant. But the present has large compensations. The little girl and her friends are out with their skipping ropes and the sidewalk is chalked in squares where they balm, a fresh wind that sweeps play hop-scotch.Small boys are shooting marbles and are as breathless as the puppy that romps with them. For them Spring is a day after day of release, of freedom from cumbersome clothes and escape from early nights; it is day after day of more sunshine and sweet air and free movement. And for adults Spring is a the mind as the sun clears the streets of ice.Pleasure is visible and animated—the fat robin hard back on its heels as it tugs at the worm; the budding trees.trees, the sprouting crocuses, tulips and daffodils; the children romping in the yard. They promise that the time is near for the removal of storm windows, for golf and tennis and sailing, for drives into the green country.Spring—the name itself is enlivening. There is cheer in it and beauty, the beauty of growth and of newness. It is possible to look back on Winter with affection, if only for the reason that like a shadow it highlights the charm of Spring.'«I :: vM-tc-xt-'- ¦ GOOD REASONS WHY YOU SEE MORE FARGO TRUCKS on the road than ever before! 1. Forward Look styling.Clean, smooth-flowing lines, forward-thrusting fenders, modern hooded headlamps, wide-sweeping grille—a/f have a buainess-building look of flair and flcctness.2. Super-rugged design. From built-to-take-it cmrome-alloy spring* to extra-heavy-duty frames to shot-peened rear axles, Fargoa give you a valuable bonus in hauling ability.3. Economical operation.Fargo V-8’a and proved Sikes give you full power on regular gas.Exclusive full-opening alligator hood makes engine maintenance easier, faster, thriftier.4. Top power.Fargo trucks lead in advanced-design V-8 power, from 180 lo232 h.p.Fargo Sixes, too.are leaders.5. Driving ease.Shortest turning diameters (on many models) take you easily out of tight spots.Push-button driving is available on D100 (H-ton) models for start-stop hauling ease.6. Mere comfort, tofety.Wide, wide cab seat has fore-and-aft plus seat-hack angle adjustment.Electric windshield wipers, safety door latches are standard equipment.I 1 m Chrysler Corporation of Canada, Limited m Model D100 Panel, 5,000 lbs.max.G.V.W.Model D100 Express, 5,000 lbs.max.G.V.W.also Model D300 Express, 8,800 lbs.max.G.V.W.s 41 Grades 42 Augment» 43 Hold 44 City in Nevada Model D300, Stake body, 8,800 lbs.max.G.V.W.Model D400 with Van body, 15,000 lbs.max.G.V.W.Model 0500 with Dump body, 18,000 lbs.max.G.V.W.Cab-Over-Engine model, up to 45,000 lbs max G.C.W Model D700 Tractor, up to 45.000 lbs.max.G.C.W- You’re way out front with FARGO —¦built to fit your iob hli -.•.v.oedgi.tfrtcg,: MARTIN MOTOR 405 BELVEDERE ST.S.SALES LIMITED SHERBROOKE QUEBEC Scolslown Women’s Institute To Hold Hat Remodelling Course May 6-10 SCOTSTOWN — The Apri! of Mr.and Mrs.Gordon MacLeod meeting of the Women's Insti- were.Mr.and Mrs.Harold Turn-tute was held in the High School, er and-Gordie.Mr.and Mrs.W.with the president, Mrs.Philip Young and son David of Lenn-Boy, conducting the opening oxville.and Mr.and Mrs.Jonn ceremonies.Nine members ans- MacLeod of Sherbrooke wered the roll call. Friends of Mr.William Mac- Minutes of the previous meet- Lean are sorry to learn he has ing were read by the secretary, been confined to bed with pn.'u-Mrs.D.A.Campbell gave the monia at the home of Mr.and financial report which showed a Mrs.Burns MacDonald, fair balance on hand. Friends of Mr.and Mrs.Dan- Members were reminded that nie MacLean will be interested there is still a need for knitted to know they have moved to squares for the Women’s Volun- their home on the Lingwick tary Service.June 25 to 28 is Road after spending the winter the date for the June conven- months in town, tion, at which each branch is an(j Mrs.Ashley Scarth allowed four articles for the ,j.v }jave returned to Stanstead af-1 ter spending a holiday with Mr.Mrs.J.B.Scott reported and Mrs.Payson Sherman.814.55 on the sale of librarj yjr.and Mrs.Jack McKeown books.Several dozen books are 0f Montreal and Mr.and Mrs.on saile in Mrs. t ater shop. Thomas Stokes of Bury w ere | Mrs.B. Atkin, Welfare and weekend guests of Mr.and Mrs.Health Convener, reported cot- Dave Waters, ton was given to a family in Mrs.Ross MacDonald was an town to be used as dressings for overnight guest of friends in a sick patient. Sherbrooke, and attended the Mrs.Cook had a paper on Eastern Star meeting.“Growing Flowers " which can ue Mr.and Mrs.Wm.Buchaman received by members free by 0f Sherbrooke were calling on sending tiicir n tovm sotte vOterYteNcsycs fappucwnov.V MOU'U.TZfcPÜRT CDTTVA GOWVE.Tt LGPteVmOBt Kite FASjÇjOOVi D& YW&Vl CDYlViKÆ OOt XYABR tAVL TO GteMà OVr P, PRtt TRIP TO ELteOteVT ¥-’20 K S, MM l.rvV.M*.T M P-g U S fit OH, KNOBBY,.TM T AW SCARED.'
