that he had come from Sherbrooke on the “Scoot” on that evening and had started for a house where his mother lives. This house was found to be in the opposite direction from where he was met.He said that someone had assaulted him with a rock and had taken off his clothes. The physician of the railway company was called and examined the injuries. The doctor found that although Fecteau's head was somewhat seriously bruised, the injuries were not dangerous. His coat and vest were found hanging on a fence not far away from the railway track. In his vest was a gold watch, which had not been taken, nor had any other articles which were in his clothes.Fecteau cannot give a reason for the assault, but thinks, from what he can remember, that some party went with him from the station in BULLETS FROM HUNTERS.Reckless shooting by hunters or others came neai causing a fatal accident at Moulton Hill.Mr.Wm.Allard, Moulton Hill, Ascot Township, was in Sherbrooke, and told the story of the shooting. It appears that when his little son, aged six years, was let out of school on Thursday afternoon, he started to Play in the school yard with other companions’ While at play young Allard was struck by a stray bullet, which grazed his temple, and caused him to bleed profusely. The little fellow was knocked to the ground, and on the wounld being dressed it was found that a nasty scar would he the result of the wound. There is a sugar bush about two acres from the school house, and it is thought that some person hunting there had fired the shot.Mr.Allard said that his son had indeed a close call from instant d eath.To further hear out his remarks as to reckless shooting, Mr.Allard said that on the Monday previous, he started ploughing in his field, but during the day he had to give up work owing to the passing of bullets in such close proximity to his person These bullets came from the direction of the, near-by woods.Mr.Allard also found one of bis horses dead in the field with a bullet hole in its body.Swiss rilies are being sold at such a low price, namely, $3.00 that young hoys purchase them, and when out shooting, do not seem to realize that a bullet from one of those rifles will carry about two miles. Many farmers find it unsafe to do any work near their woods owing to this reckless shooting, and an agitation is now under way to petition the authorities to prohibit young boys from carrying such dangerous , weapons.Since the introduction of those rides in the Country, the farmers throughout the Eastern Townships have lost many horses and cattle from stray bullets fired by reckless and ignorant hunters.STREET RAILWAY « THE COWL.Letter Relating to the Wellington Street Matter.COMPANY ASKS FOR GRADES AND PERMISSION TO PROCEED WITH WORK.The Sherbrooke Railway & Power Company have addressed the following letter to the City Council. The letter was read Friday night and referred to special committee. The letter was as follows : "We must again take the liberty of writing you regarding the work on Wellington street."It is now over a year since the Sherbrooke Railway & Power Company submitted plans to the city for the 1,000 foot turnout on this thoroughfare yet no definite instructions or grades have been given to the company in order that they might proceed with the work.“Or July 18th we received a true copy of a report of the committee, authorizing the turnout but stating that the question of paving would be held in abeyance.;‘With this decision in mind the company made the necessary preparations to proceed with the work on August 1st, 1911, and notified the Council accordingly.“On application being made to the city authorities for grades we were refused ; consequently, we were unable to start the work.“About August 8th, 1911, we received another committee report notifying the company that the Council would require 90 In., grooved girded rail and steel ties for Wellington St.May we ask why this feature was not embodied in the report of July 14th, or wny was it not set forth in the By-law ?“If you refer to By-law No.280, you will note that it states that the rails shall be “T” 70 lbs.to the yard and not less than 6 inches in depth, no mention whatever being made of steel ties.“Surely such a change is not warranted because the Company require a 1,000 feet of double tracking.“If “T” rail meets with the ap proval of the Council for single track we know of no reason why it should not be suitable for double track.“We believe you realize the importance of this stretch of double track, and know that it is absolutely essential if we are to give the public a good service."At a very large expense new extensions have been built, and new cars purchased, yet we are unable to give a satisfactory service because cars cannot be routed through the centre of the city.“We again ask the city for grades, and permission to proceed with this work, in order that the company can comply with the, conditions of the franchise, and give the general public the service they are entitled to under the said franchise.” DAILY NEWS SPECIALS
