' Two of the pincipa! financial weekly\u2019s, \u201cThe Statis,\u201d and \u201cThe Economist,\u201d both wielding great influence, make hot able pleas for a balanced view of the strike, advocating justice to the strikers.\u201cIt is clear the strike might never to have happened,\u201d says the Economist, \u201cbut it is by no means clear, as is too generally assumed by the well-to-do that the responsibility lies with 'the wage earners and their leaders.\u2019 The whole position is marked by A lack of clearness, lor which the government is to a great extent responsible.\u201cLabor is determined not to return to its pre-war position, and it is perfectly right.To say nothing of other conditions, we cannot afford to prosper at.the expense of the health -and welfare of a large part of the community.When workers are told there is no margin for them, they point, very naturally, to the wanton extravagance by the government and: the well-to-do, and say there seems to be plenty.The Government must not think that, because the public volunteered to do all possible to meet the situation, the railwaymen\u2019s cause is generally unpopular.Their method of springing the strike suddenly is almost universally condemned, but the desire for a better distribution of wealth is now one of the most popular sentiments prevalent.The cause of the underpaid workers has many champions among those who have worked hardest to defeat the strike.\u201d The Government is condemned by the Statist for witholding information which would enable the public to form a correct judgment of the position, and believes \u201ca good deal may be said on both sides.\u201d \u201cIt is extremely regrettable,\u201d says the newspaper, \u201cthat bitter feelings have been stirrer! up.Th Premier himself uses language which ought not to come from the head of the Government, and the example be has set is being followed by every wretched writer who wishes to curry favor with the powerful.Much has been written in the reactionary press that is not merely without judgment, but actually wicked.\" Contending that the strikers are exercising a legal constitutional right, and in view of the fact that the strike entails suffering to themselves and their families, the Statist says it is improbable \u201cthey are striking for fun,\u201d and asks if \u201cit is reasonable to accuse trade unionists of acting in utter disregard of the notion, and of individuals composing it.\u201d \u201cIf we give way to temper and accuse men as good as ourselves on all sorts of criminal intention,\u201d the paper says in conclusion, \u201cwe are guilty of a great wrong and run the risk of bringing about a most serious condition in things.\u201d -# !
