PRINCE Former Crown Princess Cecilia on Visit to Wieringen Island.THE HAGUE, Aug.19_______The solitary state of the ex-Crown Prince of Germany, Frederick Wilhelm Hohenzollera, on Wieringen Island, is considerably lightened by frequent visits of relatives.Formed Crown Princess Cecilia, with her four sons, arrived at the Dutch frontier station of Oldonzaak on Tuesday and yesterday morning, she continued her journey to Wieringen, where she is planning to stay probably a few weeks, with a visit in the meantime to Doom Castle. In the course of late weeks, the ex-Crown Prince has had his brothers Eitel, Frederick and Adalbert, as his guests. The former departed for Germany, and Adalbert returned yesterday to Daom, where he intends to stay for some time.DR.BLACK RESIGNS FROM SETTLEMENT undertaking.Numbers who called at the Record office today could not be admitted into the first fifty list, but if public sentiment supports a general movement to make our rivers and their shores more attractive there will be room for all.The idea of making the Magog River Gorge in some way accessible to the public has long been in the minds of some citizens. The possibilities in this direction may at least be carefully examined. In the meantime a “little bit” has been accomplished and it is to be hoped the re-cleaning of the banks of the lower Magog will not be required.Among citizens who have added their names to the li$t since yesterday are Mrs.E.A.Nourse, Sir.and Mrs.C.H.Bowen, Mr.and Mrs.Gleason, three who signed “Interested,” Mrs.W.M.Tomlinson, Mme.J.R.Vincent, Disorders Which Broke Out, When Twenty-seven Persons Were Killed—Despatch from Kattowitz States that the Town Was Quiet Last Night and a Strong Force of Security Police is on Patrol.(Associated Press Despatch) 1 BERLIN, Aug.19.—Negotiations -were begun some time ago by the German Government with the Allied Commission at Oppeln regarding the maintenance of the neutrality of the plebiscite districts of Upper Silesia, says a semi-official abatement issued here last night. It is declared'"the commission has-given assurances that henceforth it will prevent any assistance being sent to warring nations through those territories.A despatch from Kattowitz, filed there at nine o’clock last night, stated the town was quiet and that a strong force of security police was on patrol. The Allied Commission has declared an intensified state of siege as a result of fatal disorders on Tuesday, when twenty-seven persons are said to have lost their lives.Another telegram from Kattowitz quotes a statement from the Allied Commission xegardin gthe riot, it being said that the security police- tried to protect the French troops. One Allied soldier was killed and eight citizen, Mr.S.F.Morey, now living in Toronto, devoted much time and energy in a supreme effort to accomplish the object you are now seeking, but, alas, without success. It is a lamentable fact that many of those of us who occup stores, offices and apartments on Strathcona Square cannot seem to appreciate the advantage to ourselves, our landlords, and more especially to the hundreds of citizens and visitors who daily pass over the Dufferin Avenue Bridge, of respectably kept rear premises; they behold instead, ashes and rubbish along the river bank, when with care on the part of each, there would appear a cleanly, attractive, grassy plot, refreshing both to the eye and mind.I hope the movement you have inaugurated may be successful and a forerunner of others undertaken for the beautifying of our city, in which every citizen should gladly join.I submit the maximum contribution on behalf of each member of my firm and the firm itself will gladly respond to another call when necessary.Yours (Associated Press Despatch) BUTTE, Mont., Aug.19.—President Wilson “put one over” on Mr.Lloyd George in the distribution of voting strength in the League of Nations, Franklin D.Roosevelt, Democratic vice-presidential nominee, declared in an address here yesterday.“The Republicans are playing a shell game on the people of the United States,” the nominee declared, “because they are still circulating the story that Britain has six votes to our one.” “It is just the other way,” he went _pu.“As a matter of fact, the United States has about twelve votes in the Assembly.Until last week I had two of them myself, and now Secretary Daniels has them. You know I have had something to do with the running of a couple of j little republics.Facts are that I wrote Haiti’s constitution myself, and if I do say it, I think it a pretty good constitution.” Mr.Roosevelt said that Haiti and Domingo, Panama, Cuba and Central American countries, who had at least-twelve votes in the League’s assembly, all regarded Uncle Sam as a guardian and a big brother, and that the United States practically would have their votes in the League.HAVE FAILED TO AGREE RE MINERS’ WAGES WTEN the Council met last evening in an adjourned meeting to continue consideration of the by-laws which are soon to be submitted to the ratepayers, the first sign of opposition to the Technical School was voiced by Alderman Edwards.Alderman Delorme at first wanted to adjourn the meeting immediately because he had received no further word from the School Board relative to the Central School site offer, and showed his displeasure by threatening to withdraw, which would have left the meeting without a quorum. At this juncture, however, Alderman Trudeau entered the chamber, and made the number safe with Aldermen Fortier, Forest, Edwards, Brault and Skinner. However, Alderman Delorme was prevailed upon to remain and read his Technical School by-law the third time. When the by-law was about to be carried, Alderman Edwards rose to state his views on the matter.“I can’t support this by-law,” said Alderman Edwards, “because I am not in sympathy with the Technical School at this time. The city will have to buy a site which will cost $30,000 and pay ten thousand a year for maintenance. The city can’t afford this luxury and the Province' can’t afford to build with labor and material so high.” A totally different opinion was taken by Alderman Skinner, however, who said he considered it the best means of educating young people who wanted to advance in their trade. He said he did not blame Alderman Delorme, for being annoyed at the delays incidental to the securing of a site.Alderman Skinner proposed deferring the last reading for two weeks to enable the Council to ob’ain a favorable site.-———- [Alderman Delorme Amoved Overl Delav.*-* Alderman Delorme said he was favorable to any thing that would further the by-law, hut was tired of waiting and delaying the school. This matter has been dragging for two years now, and I want to see it finished.” Finally, Alderman Delorme consented to withdraw his third reading and adjourn it to Wednesday next.He also moved that the whole meeting adjourn then and there, but on division, in which he was supported only by his seconder, Alderman Trudeau, the Council defeated the proposal. As he left the Council chamber rather visibly annoyed, Alderman Delorme said, “Whatever you do, I am going, I can’t come here every night.” Alderman Brault then introduced Alderman Tetrault’s water-works I by-law amended with work on Queen j street, to cost twenty-five thousand eliminated. It was then proposed that the remaining sixteen thousand dollars for water-works improvements be incorporated into the gas and electric by-law, which with Alderman Edwards’ consent, was done, *-# [Aid.Brault’s By-Law Causes! Debate.-* Alderman Brault then gave second and third reading to his sewer bylaw, calling for $211,610.18.An addition was made to the original by-' law, whereby twenty-five thousand dollars was authorized for work on Bowen Avenue.Opposition was voiced by Aldermen Edwards and Skinner to the thousand dollar item for work on Sixth Avenue.Alderman Edwards said that the work was not necessary and that this item might block the whole by-law.Alderman Brault could not see the same way, and pointed out that applications for buildings had been received which would warrant the work.Alderman Fortier said he was | in favor of homologating the street immediately, which would remove the opposition to the item.Alderman Skinner moved that the troublesome item be removed, and (Continued on Page 12.) - ***************** THE WEATHER * * ***************** FINE AND WARM The area of low pressure is now centered in Manitoba, while the barometer continues unusually high from Lake Superior to the Atlantic Moderate easterly winds, fine and warm today and on Friday.LONDON, Aug.19.—Italy, to return for her constant support of Great Britain since that armistice, and principally at the recent summer resort conferences, is urging Great Britain to alter her oil agreement with France, so that Italy may get a larger share of oil from the territories over which Great Britain holds mandates. The Marquis Di Francavilla, Italian ambassador to Great Britain, conferred with Premier Lloyd George yesterday on the eve of the for a three OTTAWA, August 19.—Premier Meighen announced yesterday the resignation of Dr.J.J.Black from the Chairmanship of the Soldiers’ Settle- Premier's departure ment Board to become a director of weeks’ holiday, organization work of the Liberal and It is reported that the ambassador Conservative party.'itKed ujjojç Mr, Lloyd Gcoixe Ifadt’gjforemout Lu the discuttùon».need for fuel, pointing out, if only-inf erentially, that Italy considéra that ehe fared badly in the Spa coal decision, and now she is the only on« of the allies openly backing Great Britain's policy in Russia, notwithstanding the fact that Italy has less Interest in Russia than any of the other countries of the allies. What promises, if any, the Premier gave the ambassador, are unknown, but when he departed from London it is stated that Mr.Lloyd George expected to see M.Giolitti, the Italian Premier, at Lucerne, when oil undoubtedly would be one of the Wage Scale Committee Will Send Message to President Wilson Today.(Associated Press Despatch) CLEVELAND, O., Aug.19.—The bituminous coal miners’ wage scale committee of the central competitive field met here today to draft a message to President Wilson, notifying him that the joint wage conference, called by him, has been unable to adjust inequalities in pay as he requested. The joint scale conference of miners and operators adjourned late last night, after being in session five days. They were deadlocked over the demands of the miners that day workers be advanced to one dollar and a half a day.BANDIT COMMITTED ON MURDER CHARGE.(Associated Press Despatch) LETHBRIDGE, August 19.—Thos.Bassoff, train bandit and alleged slayer of two policemen in a recent gun fight, was committed for trial on a murder charge yesterday and will stand trial at MacLeod, oa October 12th. — —¦ .trr Banking Service VOUR banking requirements may be entrusted to this Bank with every confidence that careful and efficient service will be rendered. Our facilities are entirely at your ) disposal. “A THE CANADIAN BANK OF COMMERCE PAID-UP CAPITAL RESERVE FUND $15,000.000 $15,000.000 To Manufacturers, Exporters Importers and Others— Through our chain of 695 Branches, stretching from Newfoundland to the Pacific Coast, throughout the West Indies and in Central and South America, we can offer you a Banking Service of unexcelled efficiency.MONTHLY COMMERCIAL LETTER Writ® fop our Monthly Commercial Letter to our Foreign Trade Department, Montreal, Que.THE ROYAL BANK OF CANADA LONDON PARIS NEW YORK BARCELONA Total Resources .•.$ 35,000,000 Total Assets .$587,000,000 AYER’S CLIFF FAIR WEDNESDAY, THURSDAY and FRIDAY, AUGUST 25, 26 and 27.Livestock, Poultry, Flowers and Vegetables. The first Fair hi this di strict.Jd i PAGE TWQÙ* SHERBROOKE DAILY RECORD, THURSDAY, AUGUST 19,.Ï920.^ Bringing Up Father COPYRIGHT 1918, By George McManus l W»ï>H t»OME,BC)0'y V/OUi-D TAKE WINE" I t>HOOt_D vieuu- TKtffpft rue few MAV£ VM'f- DON’T YOU THINK A, tAAIH OOCHT TO TAKE A WTe?nOt very OFTEM-NOW: ITi A MABP>f HAN TOOA'T HELt.O-JJ T°w^Hall> £5atur iw+h).«ju.union.1 A Com?Why, a touch will end it!
