[" Sherbrooke Daily Record.Established 1897 SHERBROOKE, QUE., MONDAY, APRIL 13, 1914 ONE CENT GUNMEN GO TO CHAIR Four Convicted of Murder of H.Rosenthal Paid the Last Penalty ttONE CONFESSED HIS GUILT\u2014 WHITBY LEWIS SAID HE DID NOT SHOOT VICTIM.Sing Sing Prison, Ossining, N.Y., April 13.\u2014(Special)\u2014The four gunmen convicted for the murder of Herman Rosenthal, the New York gambler, died in the electric chair at Sing Sing prison at the break of dawn this Easter Monday morning.None confessed his guilt, and none mentioned the name of Charles Becker, the former police lieutanent, found guilty of instigating the murder, but saved by the Court of Appeals\u2019 reversal.MAKES STATEMENT.Of the four who died, Frank Seiden-Ishner, \u201cWhitey Lewis,\u201d made the only statement.Even he did not flat-!ly assert his innocence.\u201cGentle-!men,\u201d he mumbled, as the Y.Si.strapped him in the chair, 'T did not shoot at Rosenthal.Them who said I did was perjurers.For the sake of justice, gentlemen, I say I didn\u2019t.The witness Stannish-\u201d \u201dWhitey\u201d did not finish the sentence.The harness had been adjusted and the current shot his body forward in the chair.He had meant to say that Stannish, a waiter and a witness at the murder trial, had lied, but death Intervened.Seidenshner was the second man to die.\"Dago Frank,\u201d Frank Ciroffici, came first ; \u2018\u2018Gyp the Blood,\u201d Harry Horowi, was third, and \u201cLefty Louie,\u201d Rosenberg, last.In forty minutes all four were despatched.This time would have been shortened had it not been for the overcrowding of newspaper reporters.Their numbers necessitated a shifting of witnesses for each execution.There was no outward incident throughout the procedure.All walked quietly to their doom, and only their quaking knees and the sickly green pallor of their faces attested that the realization of death was upon them.William E.Cashin, Roman Catholic chaplain of the prison, accompanied \u201cDago Frank\u201d to the chair.With \u201cWhitey Lewis\u201d and \"Gyp the Blood\u201d was Rabbi Joseph Goldstein, of New York.Rabbi Mayer Kopenste Long, the spiritual adviser of the Rosenberg family, stood by \u201cLefty Louie.\u201d Priest and Rabbi alike averted their drawn faces from the chair of death, meantime struggling to control their choking throats as they intoned a prayer for the dying.TRIED TO WRECK ELECTRIC CHAIR Ossining, N.Y., April 13\u2014On the eve of the execution set for the four Rosenthal gunmen, \u201cGyp the Blood\u201d Horowitz, \u201cLefty Louie\u201d Rosenberg, \u201cWhitey Lewis\u201d Seidenshner and \u201cDago Frank\u201d Cirofici, an attempt was made to put the electric chair in the death chamber at Sing Sing prison omt of commission, and thus delay the carrying out of the sentence.This was admitted at the prison late last night.It was learned that the special dynamo connected with the electric chair had been pounded to pieces by blows with a hammer, early this morning or late last night.If the damage had not been detected before noon a postponement of the execution would have been necessary.A prison employee is under suspicion and an.investigation is now be ibg carried on by Warden Clancy and Principal Keeper Mclnerny.-+- TOWNSHIP OF STANBRIDGE OFFICERS OF THE MUNICIPALITY APPOINTED FOR THE ENSUING YEAR.' M.S.Cornell, electric light, $2fi; 7,.E.Cornell, $15.35 ; Soeurs de la Charité de Farnham for four months\u2019 hoard, Louise Gagnon, $24.-+- HEART FAILURE CAUSE OF DEATH.Ai verdict of death from heurt fail-pro was returned at the inquest conducted by Dr.Bachand, coroner, at.No.1 Police Station on Filhny might on the body of Wilfrid luis-iSOlle.Deceased, who had been working for the Oonnectlout Cotton Mills Co.for two or throe weeks, hailed from New Jersey.Ho had only been sick since Monday and was removed to the hospital on Friday moroing from the homo of Mr.Tremblay, 66 Drdm-mond Road, where ho had been boarding, on the order of Dr.Sponsor, who had been called hy I he manager of the Company.Lassello died in the Institution throe hours {later.CHANGE OF DATE OF EXHIIBIION Sherbrooke Fair Will be Held From the 5th to the 12th of September OTHER COUNTY FAIRS .HAVE AGREED TO CHANGE TIME SO AS TO AVOID CLASHING An Important meeting of the directors of the Eastern Townships Agricultural Association was held to reconsider the question of the dates for this year\u2019s exhibition, fn view of an apparent clashing of dates by various other fairs in the province and more especially the choice by Quebec of the week beginning the 31st August.A report of the action of the committee named was read from which it appears that a delegation from the Association interviewed the Quebec Exhibition authorities as well as the Provincial Government in reference to this matter.Subsequently a joint delegation on behalf of the Sherbrooke City Council and members of the Board went to Quebec and Interviewed the City Council \\nd exhibition authorities there.After a lengthy discussion of the whole matter, and In view of the urgent desire expressed by the Hon.the Minister of Agriculture that the date® should not be allowed to clash, it was felt that some adjustment should be made.It was decided, however, that before action be taken that the views of the other fairs interested in this question should be had.Following out these suggestions interviews were held with the authorities of the Brome, Richmond and other fairs.The delegations were most cordially received and all recognized that any clashing of dates would be most detrimental, and an injustice to our agricultural exhibitors in particular.These local fairs generously conceded to this view and arranged their dates so as not to conflict with Sherbrooke.Under these circumstances it has been decided that the Eastern Townships agricultural Association dates shall be those from the 5th to the 12th cf September.Brome dates to be 1st, 2nd-, and 3rd.of September and Richmond dates, 17th and i 18th September.MAY HAVE BEEN BURIED ALIVE Police of Naples Received Word That This Happened to Duchess Neveli CLEANING UP SHERBROOKE Medical Health Officer Preparing to Have Yards and Cellars Cleaned Ont SCARLET FEVER EPIDEMIC IS THING OF PAST\u2014PATIENTS ARE BEING RELEASED.The scarlet fever epidemic being practically ended, the Health Officer can now devote his attention to the cleaning up of the city\u2019s back yards, and other places.Owing to the protracted winter it has been impossible for many citizens to remove their ash piles and garbage heaps, but a few days of April sunshine will thaw these out and put everyone in a position to comply with the Provincial Health laws.Under article 53 the garbage must be removed at least once a week from the 15th of April to the 15th of October.According to article 54, on May 1st each year, all cellars, yards and dependencies of each house must have been cleaned out and all animal or vegetable matter removed.It will he Impossible for one solitary inspector of nuisances to cover the whole city in two weeks.Under the circumstances, the Health Officer will be grateful to every citizen who calls his attention to dirty premises.Complaints should he made to Dr.Pariseau in writing, and informants may rest assured that their names will not he divulged without their permission.Those who have already made verbal complaints are requested to confirm them by letter.RELEASE OF PATIENTS.Five weeks ago the scarlet fever epidemic was at its height and cases were reported at the rate of four or five per day.These have now- to be released.As the liberation is a more j complicated matter than the placing under quarantine, entailing, as it j does, the complete disinfection of persons, buildings and lodgings, this means that 'the fumigators will be working at high pressure day and night.Persons who may be released a few hours, or even a day later than they expected, are asked to forbear.54THTaRADES THIS EVENING BAKEMAN HELD UP AND ROBBED H.E.Frame Brutally Attacked in C.P.R.Yard Farnham at JUDICIAL AUTHORITIES MAY HAVE BODY EXHUMED TO DETERMINE CAUSE! WERE INFLICTED BY ROBBERS, WHO RELIEVED HIM OF $41.Farnham, April 13.\u2014 (Special) \u2014 On Friday night about 11 o\u2019clock as Mr.H.E.Frame, C.P.R.brakeman, was reporting for duty, and on nearing the O.P.R.yard, he was attacked by two highwaymen who knocked him down and relieved him of $41.The robbers brutally kicked their victim into unconsciousness, where he was found some hours later by a railway employee.He was conveyed to Rivard\u2019s Hotel and Dr.Slack summoned, who upon making an examination, found Mr.Frame to be severely injured, an especially vicious kick having been inflicted on bis side.At present Mr.Frame is reported to be slightly better, hat still in a grave condition.No clue as yet has been found of the cowardly miscreants.GLÜBÜilSE BROKEN INTO Goods Belonging to Sherbrooke Parties at Lac Tortue Stolen From Building CARRIED AWAY NEARLY ALL THE MOVEABLES.THREE MEN COMMITTED FOR TRIAL ON CHARGE.The case of Ernest Cote vs.Arthur Guay was heard before Judge Mulvena.The complainant, the guardian of a club house at Lac a la Tortue, in South Ham, discovering that the club house had been broken into and practically all the moveable contents stolen, obtained a search warrant against the defendant, and a large quantity of blankets, pillows, dishes and cutlery were found in his house.He was committed for trial, and subsequently asked for a speedy trial and pleaded guilty.He was remanded to jail till the 14th inet.for sentence.Later search warrants and also warrants of arrest were issued against Hormlsdas Boucher, Elzear Leroux and Joseph Lajeunesse on a similar charge.None of the stolen goods were found on their premises.The preliminary hearing took up most of the day on Saturday.Arthur Guay testified that the three men met at his place by previous arrangement at 6 o\u2019clock on the morning of the 3rd of April, and proceeded on snowshoes through the .woods to the club house, and having ¦ pried the shutters off and broken a window, they effected an entrance, leaving one of the number outside to stand guard.They packed up the goods and divided them between the four, and carried them on their backs to their respective homes.Ernest Cote testified that after they had been arrested all three had admitted having been present at the breaking in and stealing, hut denied 'having taken part in the breaking or having benefited in any way from the proceeds.All three were committed for trial, and asked for a jury trial and were remanded to jail, the question of their bail being referred to a Judge of the Superior Court.ARRESTED ON BENCH WARRANT.Charles Cloutier, against whom a bench warrant had issued for his failure to appear for sentence on the 23rd of March last, upon his conviction for non-support of family, under the Vagrant Act, was arrested by the police and sentenced to pay a fine of five dollars and costs, or 80 days in jail.STOLE RIDE ON O.P.R.David Miller, Reli Jab, two Roumanians from Montreal; Joseph Sullivan, of Trentcn, Ont.; Francois Cloutier, of Waterville, and Joseph Gilbert, of Richford, Vt., were arrested on complaints made by G.A.Ooombs, of the O.P.R.service, on a charge of stealing a ride from Farnham to Sherbrooke.They all pleaded guilty and worn each sentenced to pay a fine of five dollars and costs, or thirty days In Jail.CHARGE OF ATTEMPTED SUICIDE.The preliminary hearing in the case of Julie Dueharme vs.Arthur Tetrenult, of Woedon, for attempt to commit suicide, was adjourned till the 14th inst., and the accused remanded to jail.ALL READY WITH HOUSE.Toronto, April 13.\u2014Herman Henry Cook, a veteran business man, and for many years a member of the Dominion Parliament, died yesterday at his residence, Ardnaclolch, Dowling avenue, aged 78.Mr.Cook was president of the Ontario Lumber Company, a corporation which grew out of a business founded by him 56 years ago.Mr.Cook achieved- national celebrity during the general election campaign refreshments were served.TRAIN WRECK AT NORTH HATLEY Several Freight Cars Jumped Track on Bridge and Blocked Traffic For Some Time PASSENGERS FROM EVENING TRAIN FROM SHERBROOKE WERE TRANSFERRED AT WRECK TO TRAIN FROM NEWPORT.North Hatley, April 13,\u2014(Special) \u2014An accident occurred on the Boston & Maine Railway about half a mile north of the station at \u2018 this place, hut fortunately no one was Injured.Some cars on a freight train going north about 8.80 Saturday night jumped the track near the station, and when they came to the bridge just north of the highway crossing, the wheels dropped through the bridge and piled the cars up in very had shape.About six oars left the track, some of which went over the dump, and others were lying crossways on the track.The passenger train which left Sherbrooke at 9.30 p.m.came as far as the wreck, and the passengers were transferred to a train that came from Newport for them, and the cars of the Sherbrooke train were sent back to
