while it is also rumored that it was partially due to one driver admiring the oncoming car to such an extent that he did not realize the danger of a collision.Mr.Thos.Osborne, of Montreal, wras a week-end visitor at the home of his parents, Mr.and Mrs.J.Osborne.Mrs.Geo.Cunningham is expected home this week from a visit to Winnipeg Mrs.G.L.Knapp and son, of Sherbrooke, spent the week-end the guests of her sisters, Mrs.E.J.Osborne and Mrs.A.E.Smith.COOKSHIRE At the Rally Day service in the Methodist Church next Sunday morning, Miss D.L.Gass, who is conducting the C.G.I.T.conference for girls at Birchton on Saturday afternoon and evening, will present the “Church's Possibilities Among ’Teen Age Girls.” A special programme, in which the Sunday School scholars take part, wall be usedv The pastor will give a brief talk to the Young Worshippers League. All parents and scholars are urged to be present. Both morning and evening services will be on Daylight Saving time.BALDWIN’S MILLS There will be no service in the Methodist Church on Sunday, September 30th.Miss Addie Hill has returned to her home in Morgan, Vt., after spending some time wuth her friend, Mrs.A.O.Lyons.Miss Annie Martin is a guest of her sister, Mrs.Wilber May.Mr.and Mrs.M.H.Martin and Mr.and Mrs.Joseph White and family attended church at South Barn-ston on Sunday.Mrs.Fred Markwell very pleasantly entertained a number of friends at her home on Friday evening in honor of the sixteenth birthday of her daughter, Clarabell.Mrs.L.Markwell and Mrs.W.George were in Rock Island on Wednesday calling on friends.Mr.and Mrs.George Lyons, of Orleans, spent the week-end with Mr.and Mrs.A.O.Lyons.Mr.and Mrs.Lemuel Markwell spent Sunday with their daughter, Mrs.Sidney Hall, in Rock Island.Miss Anna Pratt and Mrs.Fred Gilbert were in town on Monday.Mr.and ÿfrs.Clarence Thayer and Mr.and Mrs.Wayland Ladd, of Derby Line, were week-end guests of Mr.and Mrs.H.L.Baldwin.Mrs.Melvin Martin and Mr.H.L.Baldwin spent Thursday in Coaticook.City, Wiliam Cowens.Albert .Tiffin and William Pike, of .this place. The burial was at Crystal 1 ake Cemetery, beside her father, the late Robt.C.Parsons.The principal mourners were the mother.Mrs.Robt.C.Parsons, Mr.Edward Sawyer, husband, Mt.Dermott Parsons, brother, and Mrs.H.A.Farnsworth, sister.Among those present from out of town were Mr.and Mrs.H.A.Farnsworth and Son, Robert, of Amherst, N.S.i Miss Lillian Blainey, of Windsor, Vt.; steel 476,000 tons, or 169 per cent, more than in the first half of 1922.In 1913, before the war, there were only fifty thousand motor cars in Canada. Now there are over half a million. There were 463,000 telephones in use in 1913.There are 945,000 installed today, giving the benefit of telephonic communication to half the homes in the Dominion. It might be argued that the increase of motor cars and telephones indicates the spread of extravagant modes cf living, rather than an increase of wealth.Mr.King destroyed chat refuge for pessimism by pointing out that the deposits in Canadian chartered banks, which were $1,127,-000,000 in 1913, averaged $2,121,000,000 in 1922, while iife insurance policies in force in 1922 aggregated 53,-033,000,000, as compared with $1,862,000,000 in 1913.” that their influence has been so much more potent than the gospel of the various churches ?‘Circumspice.’ Is not diplomacy, unkindly called by Voltaire the field of lies, as able as it ever was to dupe governments and governed by grand abstract catchwords veiling obscure and inexplicable purposes, and turning the whole world over with blood and tears to a strange Witches’ Sabbath? These were queries of pith and moment indeed, but for something better weighed and more deliberate than an autumn reverie.“ ‘Now and then I paused as I sauntered slow over the fading heather. My little humble friend squat upon her haunches, looking wistfully up, eager to resume her endless hunt after she knows not what, just like the chartered metaphysician. So to my’home in the falling daylight.’ ” PARAGRAPHS It is never blue Monday for the undertakers.• • Humor is an accident that befalls somebody you don’t like much.» • • Bulgaria doesn’t use the electric chair. Her place of ! execution is the Cabinet post.• .» It is the open door Uncle Sam favors, not the humi-!dor.A humidor Is used to keep things wet.* * * (Spain is no longer a great power, but she retains sufficient ambition to keep Morocco as a sparring {partner.*i* * * * + *•}-•:• >;* * •{?*!* + ?* LETTERS TO THE EDITOR * -i- •h "h -I* •5- + •> GRATITUDE FOR WORK DURING EPIDEMIC AT MANSON-VILLE Editor Sherbrooke Record:—• Sir:—The more one considers the wonderful self-sacrificing labors of both Mr.and Mrs.S.Macloughlin, during the recent epidemic of typhoid fever in Mansonville, the more clearly is it seen how great a debt of gratitude is due them for their timely help. They shouldered the work quite naturally from the very first, dispensing the Red Cross and other supplies; and Morley never attained the standing of the poet. His heroic fidelity to Reason cost him all those graces and powers which Imagination showers on those who are not afraid to trust her.“Yet when the critics have said their worst of Mor-iey’s purely literary work, it is still true that it cannot be quite relegated to the comfortable and not inglorious limbo where lingers the shades of the essays of Bage-hot, Hutton, and Macaulay. He wrote as one of his great antagonists said ‘pretereaimly, subsilently, superper-suasively, but subtly and potently;” he exercised a profound influence upon the most advanced and most earnest thought of his generation; his pages were permeated with desire for truth and honesty; he wrote the greatest political biography of the English language; and he penned an apologia for Victorianism that silenced most of his critics.“In 1883 the essayist retired and the publicist appeared. The earnest author became the chief lieutenant of a great political chieftain, the political tutor of a parliamentary party, and, incidentally, the historian of his time. The friend and follower of Stuart Mill could not but interest himself in public life, and from the first the world of politics exercised its subtle temptations upon Morley. In 1869 and 1880 he contested unsuccessfully seats at Blackburn and Westminster. In the latter years he had edited ihe Pall Mail Gazette, then at the height of its reputation, and, for a few years, a recognized organ of Gladatonian Liberalism. But it was the election to a seat at Newcastle-on-Tyne in 1883 which he himself marked as the fresh starting-point of his public life.Between that day and his retirement from office on the outbreak of the war, he acquired with constantly increasing momentum the character of a political leader, and became the chief literary spokesman of British Liberalism.“Of Morley’* part when the supreme crisis fell upon Europe in 1914, only history' may speak. He saw ail the Influence of his life’s teachings crumble into impotence over night, and, in failing years, and 'wearied of the conflict, he put off his armor to go into obscurity. There Ls something of pathos, something that baffles and perplexes in the spectacle of the old Roman of human liberty stilled in voice when the grand principle for which he had lived stood in deadly jeopardy—yet shall we judge of him too harshly ?In his last written words, those magnificent ‘Recollections,’ he suffered us to peep into the recesses of his own troubled soul: “ 'A painful interrogatory, I must confess, emerges.Has not your school—the Darwins, Spensers, Renan, and the rest—held the civilized world, both old and new alike, European •nd tram» Atlantic, in the hollow of their hand for two long generations past ?Is it quite clear f As a rule, the man who whines for a square deal is w'hining for a set-up at a corner pocket.? * w Don’t think he is important just because he appears to have a grouch.Who ever heard of a grouchy winner ?* a a The strange part is that a woman can’t be an “affinity” without getting some practice as another man’s wife.w • » A free country is one in which no man is suppressed except the one whose arguments the majority* can’t answer.* » • Men are more modest.A woman will make up her face in public, but a man won’t even make up his mind in public office.• • a It may be that modern novels contain fewer illustrations because the illustrations would necessarily be too naughty to pass the censor.adian Bank of Commerce, and the fact of Mrs.Macloughiln’s being a fully trained nurse, made it appear to be a providential coincidenct that they (with their little boy) were spared from being victims of the epidemic in order that they might be free to do the work which they so ably and unselfishly undertook and carried through with such a marked success.Early in the morning, right | through the day, and until very late at night, did these people wholeheartedly and unstintedly give of their time, their energy, their ability and surely those of us, especially who were fever-stricken and who are now well and strong once again; and all who were benefitted and received any help at all in any way during and since those terrible days of April and May—surely we have every cause to be most truly grateful to these two people. We are bidden to love our neighbor as ourselves.Mr.and Mrs.Macloughlin forgot themselves in their | devotion to what they felt and saw to be their duty as Christian people.Mrs.Macloughlin has now gone away for a well-earned rest, and Mr.Macloughlin hopes shortly to take his annual holiday.“Friends in need are friends indeed!” Yours truly, (Rev.) NEEDED IN U.S.Prohibition in United States Was Also Discussed by Rex Beach, Noted Author.(Associated Près» Deapatch) OTTAWA, Sept.28v — Greater j tolerance and less effort on the 1 part of organized minorities di-! rected to the subjugation of others to their own views of conduct.Rex Beach, noted author, who arrived in Ottawa yesterday, expressed ns the pressing need in the United States today.Mr.Beach is accompanied by Mrs.Beach, and will do some hunting in the Pontiac district.Enlarging on his remark concerning greater tolerance in the states, Mr.Beach said that the present situation in Oklahoma arising from Governor J.C.Walton’s war on the Ku Klux Klan, was one of the outstanding results of this wave of intolerance, which he stat-: ed was sweeping depressively over the States at present. The highly unsatisfactory results of prohibition was another that could not Tail to command attention.Speaking of prohibition in New York State, Mr.Beach expressed the opinion that if those resnpn-; sible for the observance of the : Volstead Act got busy and really endeavored to enforce it.JL shying effort for the repeal of the law would shortly follow. As it was.j he said, it was the poor man who desired the wiping out of the enactment from the books and the j rich man, who looked on passively, well assured of the fact that he could get it anywjji. In New York.RINGING UP
