but, judging by its produce at the show, we are satisfied it is in no respect behind the Central and Eastern districts in those outward and visible signs of successful industrry, enterprise and intelligence, which almost every homestead in those latter present to the eye of the passer-bye.Large, well-built stone and brick houses,—not a few of them displaying a good deal of architectural taste and many deserving the name of mansions—with vast barns, cattle-houses, stables and other outbuildings, and surrounded by well-cultivate*! and well-fenced fields, rich meadows and verdant pastures, where, but a few years ago, the oue-storey clap-boarded cottage, sheds, and half-cultivated fields of the early settler stood, afford assurance, in all directions, of the bountiful returns, with which the labour of the farmer is rewarded in Canada.True, our winters are long and severe, but let any one from the more favored and sunnier South or West visit the county of Missisquoi, and bear in mind that all the wealth and comfort he sees around him is the result of the industry, almost unaided by capital, of but two or, at the most, three generations, and he will be forced to admit, that if Nature s hand is cold with us, her heart is warm ; and that in no country does she more freely and liberally respond to the health-and-wealth-hestowing toils of those who intelligently and persevering-ly cultivate her lavors.By the list of prizes, which we publish in an other column, the reader will be able to judge of the comprehensive character of the agricultural and other products of the county.Of their quality we must say a few words.And first, of that no- blest of quadrupeds, the horse.The heavy breeds of draft-horses—the Clydesdale, Pennsylvania dray-horse and their congeners—do not appear to be in favor with the Missisquoi farmers, and we did not notice any specimen o^ this class upon the ground.The soil of the county is generally light and speed and activity is more prized than weight in their horses, the work in heavy lands being generally done by oxen, of which some yery handsome yokes were on exhibition.Of full and half-blooded horses there was quite a creditable show—we doubt whether it could be excelled by any other county in Canada.Of aged horses, we should be inclined to give the premium—which was awarded by the judges—to Mr.Rhikhart’s “Wild Mexican,” a splendid black stud, in which, although claiming nativity on the boundless prairies of Mexico, we thought we could detect a large infusion of pure Norman or Canadian blood.Be this, however, as it may, a more powerful, symmetrical and gallant steed than “Wild Mexican” we have rarely seen.Mr.Van Antwerp, of Dunham, had a beautiful three-year old dark bay—by Trustee and Logan —on the ground, perfect in all its points ; as was another dark bay, of the same age—of the Blackhawk breed—owned by Mr.Ford of the same place.Dr.Brigham, ot Phillipsburgh, also exhibited a very fine thorough-bred and beautifully actioned three-year old dark bay colt, Bob Logic, and an equally fine four-year old, of the Blackhawk and Lady Vane breed.Mr.Blinn, of East Stanbridge, had a fine epen gf thfee-j>ear çid, fyell-matçhed and very powmlo} Hacks on the ground.Of handsome and prombing two-year-olds there were quite a number, but Mr.Baker’s light bay, which took the first prize, very well merited the distinction.In horned cattle -bulls, oxen, cows and calves—the show was numerous and remarkably fine—the great majority being of pure and mixed Durham stock.The show of sheep, chiefly Leicesters, was creditable as was that of hogs, but it is in hotses and horned cattle than the Missisquoi breeders excel.— Nothing could exceed the show of butter and cheese.The first prize for the butter, as will be seen, was taken by a specimen from the dairy of Mr.Wellington Toof, of St.Armand East.Mr.Toof is one of the largest cheese-producers in the county.We visited his dairy, where we found some hundreds—many tons—of large 50 lbs.cheeses ready for the market.When done justice to—that is, when ripened by keeping for ten or twelve months— Mr.T.s cheeses, we are assured by good judges in the trade, can scarcely be distinguished from English Cheese.The show of Maple Sugar, both caked and drained was a striking feature in the exhibition—many specimens being scarcely distinguishable irom the best Muscovado and refined sugars of commerce.The domestic manufactures, such as cloths, quilts, stockings, mitts, &c., did great credit to the skill and taste of the fairer half of the population.In the country manufactures — wagons, buggies, harness, leather, boots, agricultural instruments, fanning machines, horse-rakes, &c.,—the exhibition was also most creditable ; and among articles for which no prizes could be afforded, but which certainly merited and we trust , will be introduced into the prize list at the next annual show, were some admirable specimens of doors, window sashes, blinds, tables, beds and other cabinet ware from the manufactory of Messrs.P.& L.Lambkin, of Riceburgh.The show of vegetables and fruit was rather inferior, but, excepting for household use, the inland farmer has but little inducement to devote much attention to the kitchen-garden and the orchards, in Missisquoi, as elsewhere in Canada this year, are almost a failure.We must not conclude this hasty sketch of what most attracted our attention at East Stanbridge, without a few words on the admirable arrangements for the exhibition.The ground,—which, we understand, has been rented by the Association as a permanent site for future exhibitions—is most favourably situated, close to the village and commanding a fine view of the surrounding country.It comprises some five or six acres of grass land, and is entirely enclosed by a ten-foot board fence.Within are erected roomy and substantial covered sheds and stalls for the horses and cattle, and pens for the sheep and hogs.In the centre is a pavilion, for the exhibition of bntter, cheese, sugar, domestic manufactures, Sea., and at one side a good course for the show of horses.'Vve have never seen a better arranged exhibition ground, and, although its cost must have been considerable, we trust that the receipts at the entrance would at least go far towards meeting it.The attendance on Tuesday was numerous, of ladies as well as gentlemen—the weather being all that could be wished,—but Wednesday’s bleak and stormy blasts and intermitting showers of rain and sleet, not only greatly reduced the numbers on the ground but somewhat curtailed the proceedings of their lair proportions— the prize animals could not be well paraded in the rain, and as the declaration of prizes was also made sub Jove frigido, the expected orations, with which it had been intended to close, were necessarily omitted.On the whole, however, the Show was, according to the banal phrase, a “decided success;” upon which we have great pleasure in congratulating its managers and contributors.“ We had a’maist forgotten clean,” as poor Burns says in the postscript of his letter to Johnnie Lapraik (or some other of his correspondents), one not unimportant and specially pleasant feature of the exhibition_ namely, the excellent Brass Band which attended on the ground and discoursed sweet music, to the delectation of the holiday folks, old and young.We wish it had, like nearly all else within sight and hearing, been of native growth, bat “Rome was not built in a day,” and we doubt not, in our account of the next annual exhibition, we shall have the pleasure of recording how the Missisquoi Brass Band made the woodland echoes ring with melody.In the meantime, we must do justice to the “ imported article,” and must say the Swanton Band did their devoir iu a most creditable manner and, especially, that they played God Save the Queen with the slightest possible foreign accent.Of East-Stanbridge—the locus in quo of the county gathering, the leading features of which we have, thus, endeavoured roughly to sketch—, we feel bouud to say, iu conclusion, that it would be difficult to find in Canada a village or country town bearing more unequivocal marks, in its manufacturing establishments, stores and private residences, of the general prosperity of the surrounding population.Its hotels, too, are quite “ up to the mark” as first class country at least we can speak of The Missisquoi, whose obliging Mr.Elder, amply provided with everything of the best, alike in cellar and larder, was untiring in his attention to the comforts ot his numerous guests during our short stay in his well-ordered house.Cbioket—AlIi BnqiiAnd vs, Twenty-two Gentlemen of Canada East.—We are able to inform our readers that the players in the forthcoming match with the English Eleven have been chosen on the part of Lower Canada.In most matches of a similar kind in England, the Twenty-two who contend against the Eleven are professional bowlers.The match to be played on the 21st and following days in Montreal is between the Eleven and Twenty-two strictly gentlemen amateur players.The names of the players are the following : The Eleven—Wisden, Parr, Grundy, Lock, yer, Caffyn, Julius Cæsar, Daft, Diver, Hayward, Carpenter, John Lillywhite, and Jack-son.The Twenty two—Lt.Bonner, R A., Lt.Symons, R.A., Lt.Surman, R.O.R., Messrs.Pryor, Kerr and Tilstone, from Quebec ; while the Stock (Iron and Wood) has suffered no depreciation, and was computed at its present market value The total Liabilities do not exceed $100,000 or (say $99728 45) thus showing a balance in favor of the Estate after deducting Bad and Doubtful Debts, of something over $83,000 00.Your corresnondent also states that no de-.tails of Stock or Tools was given, but in this he is in error, as a detailed statement of the Stock was laid upon the table, and examined by several of the Creditors, and the Tool Book showed the details of the machinery.1 am, Sir, Yourobdt., servant, W.ROBB, Book-Keeper.Montreal, 16th Sept.1659.were exhibited without entry by S.J.Lyman, Esq.Note.—James Middleton is Gardener to Wm Lunn, Esq.; and every amusement was provided ; but, still there was a stronger incentive to attend than these—the fact that the Society provides for, educates and maintains 120 children, who, were not such an institution in existence, might either starve or be thrown upon the community as vagrants or criminals.Under such circumstances, we have pleasure in recording that the numbers present at the Fete yesterday were such as to warrant the conclusion that the efforts of the several committees, and the claims of the charity met.Everything contributed to the scccess of the Fete.The arrangements made beforehand were skillfully carried into effect ; and one of these —that of conveying passengers from the French Square for a charge of 6d.only, the carriages starting every 10 minutes—resulted in a continued flow of visitors all day.The Fete commenced at half-past nine o’clock ; by twelve a large number was present, but in the afternoon the public came in crowds.The day was really beautiful, neither warm nor cold, but of that pleasant medium temperature, in which every one could observe everything without inconvenience or discomfort.For many the games and for others the grounds presented attraction.Both were equally gratified—the first with the spirit in which the palm was contested, the other with the views of the city, the river, and the mountain, which, in its changing foliage, bears the brown and beautiful traces of “ Autumn’s fiery fingers on the leaves.” Towards two o’clock, His Excellency the Governor General was observed on the grounds, together with General Williams, and many of the officers of the garrison.The spectators, without exception, took the greatest interest in the games, some of which were of a highly exciting and others ot a highly laughable nature.Nor were the ladies, of whom a large number was present, wantiu £40 Do All Pipe, according to thickness.£40 (a> £46 Do W.O.Puncheon Merchantable.£12 (3) £12 10s Deals, Bright according to specification £15 for Ists, f rds for 2nds.floated.£13 £14 for Ists, frds for 2nds.Spruce.?.£8 for Ists, £6 for 2nds, & £4 for 3rds.Do Do Ship PORT OF QUEBEC.ARRIVED—Sept.14.Russia, Kelly, 29th July, Sligo, Ryan Bros & Co, ballast.Bark Dominica, Young, 23rd July, Cork, Benson & Co, do.A light and a deep barque arrived last evening —The light barque is a Prussian.Statement of Arrivals and Tonnage, at the port of Quebec, in the years 1858 and 1859, up to the 15th September, inclusive, is as follows :— 1858— 674 Vessels. 350,195 Tons.1859— 641 “ 352,247 “ Less this ye’r 33 2,052 “ more.Comparative statement of arrivals and tonnage from the Lower Ports, in 1858 and 1859, up to the 15th Sept., in each year :— 1858— 72 Vessels.6,615 Tons.1859— 54 “ 6,710 “ Less.18 95 Return of the number of Emigrants arrived at Quebec to the 17th Sept., 1858-’59 :— Whence. 1858. 1859. Cabin. St’ge. Cabin. Stye.England  1073 4349 1007 2681 Ireland  52 861 4 354 Scotland  37 1378 121 565 Germany  0 923 8 962 Norway  0 2662 57 1694 Lower Ports. 105 109 0 0  - ¦ i — !    —     1267 10282 •1297 •6256 Decrease 3996.•By Steamers.  3204   •By Sailing Vessels.4349—7553.- A.C.BUCHANAN, Chief Agent.Government Emigration Office, Quebec, Sept, 15,1859, NEW YORK MARKETS—Sept.16.Flour—Receipts moderate ;
