retaining a great degree of moisture, it causes the plant to grow in a healthy condition, and as experience has proved Free of Insects.For orders in any quantity (which will be promptly attended to) or pamphlets containing full particulars of analyses and tests ol farmers, Apply to JOHN B.SARDY, Agent, No.58 South St., corner of Wall St,, New York City.September 20, [ly-242 Parson’s Exterminator HAS completely rid French’s Hotel, New York, of Cockroaches and Rats He recommends it as invaluable to Hotel-keepers.All dealers in medicine have it.Februtiry 22. du-45 WilUMGE HOB «IFAIiîim COLONIAL PATENT STARCH, Manufactured by the Canada Starch Comp’y, Montreal.THIS EXCELLENT STARCH is superior to any imported, and only requires one trial to place it in universal use in every family.January 12, po s COTCH LING FISH Lochfine Herrings No.1 Mackerel, in kits Spiced Salmon, in 101b tins Fresh Digby Herrings Sugar Cured Hams Fresh Oysters and Finnan Paddies For sale Daily receiving February 10.ALEX.MoGIBBON.35 Respirators.JUST OPENED, a Parcel of RESPIRATORS, suitable for Ladles or Children.Price 7s.6d.each.A large assortment of Jeffrey’s Respirators always on hand, an Sale by February 15, J, GARDNER, Chemist, &c., West End Notre Dame Street.¦3V % X nILw iXi'iivtX '^WûvliUv jIaSîmX \\àA - s*ss»àfî \\W> „ r jf V.- c - v^/'KilXv^\\ ^ - v .^ • U\\ i Jiv — -i'M' \\Mvv\\W\\\\.iV\\W UJW« \\W - ^V^OuUWlU vlA^]luM^v fi\\JU^7 ^ ^ i a ,^r ,w^w& M'î' ^ ^ -muΫ \\Warnvchÿv ttvJ5LWU%A>A t V vw \\' tk*ÀAiA VvVvAw^ KxJS.NTRE4L HERALD AND DAILY COMMERCIAL GAZETTE TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 1860.( V^'At ^ y tiXjJkï T .; Some of cur friends, both in New York and in Portland, seem to be greatly exercised by the proposition to bring the grand Trunk Railway to Boston over the Eastern Railroad.The funny man who “does” the business articles for the Independent, notices the project in the following manner :— “The Boston Corn Exchange are tryino- to induce the Grand Trunk Railroad Company to extend the terminus for their freight by special arrangement to that city.Wide awake, the Yankees! Next year the Erie aud New Tork Central will probably think of the same project.” The writer of this paragraph forgets that the New York Central Railroad has for many years been connected with Boston by an uniform guage, and that cars can come to this city by way of Troy, from any part of that road and from beyond it.The only requirement in that direction at the present time, is a bridge over the Hudson, and we do not despair of seeing even this accomplished.Whether the Erie Railroad will seek a similar connection with Boston, we cannot say ; we doubt whether its present financial condition would warrant any large expenditure in seeking new business— although we notice it has a handsome office in State street, and a courteons agent to represent it among our merchants—from which we infer that it wishes to make Boston one of its termini.Certainly, if the measures with regard to prorata freight and to tolls now before the New York Legislature, be carried into effect, both these railroads will be badly in need of all the business they can influence from this city and from other sources.On the other hand, our Portland neighbours are very wrathy because they think thev have a sort of monopoly of the Grand Trunk, and that we propose to interfere with their vested right.We beg to assure them that this question of thé extension of the Grand Trunk Line to East Boston, will be settled upon its own merits, and that personal feeling and prejudice will have nothing whatever to do with it.If the measure promises to pay, it will be adopted ; if otherwise, it will fail.If the Portland editors can convince ihe Directors of the Grand Trunk that their receipts will be diminished by establishing their seaboard terminus in this city, or that the displeasure of the good people of Portland will more than offset any pecuniary advantages uiey may gain by tills step, they will succeed in their opposition to it.But, on the other hand, it reliance be placed upon the supposition that the management of the Grand Trunk will adopt no policy that will be likely to in-tertere with the real or fancied interests of Portland, our neighbours will find themselves greatly mistaken.The Grand Trunk Railway Company did not inquire, when its line was projected,whether Toronto and Hamilton would suffer from the diversion of their trade by a more quick route to Montreal, nor, when the great Bridge was planned, whether Montreal would lie likely to lose in its turn, by the tide of traffic being facilitated in its flow towards Quebec in the Summer, and towards Portland and Boston in the (Vinter.This splendid line was not built for the particular benefit of Toronto, Montreal, Portland Boston, or ot any one city, or of any one district.Its projectors had reference to British North America as a whole, and they will make such connections iu the New England States as will best enable them to carry out the orginal plan.The Directors will estimate the share they will be likely to gain of the business of this capital of New England, this second commercial city of the Union, they will carefully examine the conveniences offered for their use at East Boston, they will weigh the proposals of the Eastern Railroad, and they will arrive at a decision, not by any personal considerations, nor out of re gard to this or that city, but as the best interests of the line for all future years shall dictate, MATTHEWS & MACLEAN’S DAILY PRICES OF UPPER CANADIAN PRODUCE, Toronto, reo.zo, iauu.Receipts io-day were lighter, not over 2000 bushels Wheat, of which upwards of 1500 bush was Fall.A few sales of round lots Superfine at $4.50, in store.Prime Fall Wheat—$1,23(0)1,32.Common lo Fair—$1,1?(5)1,22.Spring Wheat—97c(0$l.O4.Oats—34(0>35c.Peas—55(0)olc.Barley—67(0)69e.Flour a little more enquiry, but little doing.Double Extra, $5.60(®5.70.Extra.$5.30(3)5.40.Fancy.$4.80/0)5.00.No.1.$4.50(0)4.60.GRAND TRUNK RAILROAD OF CANADA.STATEMENT OF TRAFFIC RECEIPTS.For the week ending Feb.18, 1860.^ r , „ No. Amount • INo.of Local Passengers.8,108£ 11 871 89A n„ T-.—. - a Do Foreign do Do do Emigrants Mails, Express &c. .Local Freight and Live Slock.Timber and Lumber, feet.1,310.510 Fire Wood, cords. 1.699 Foreign Freight and Live Stock.1.173 .’ 2,776 11 Tons.6.839 25,057 69 1.0723 3.306 68 2.319 1,663 90 1,2753 4.246 94 Total.Week ending Feb.19,1859.Increase.Miles. 970 50.926 14 880 39,869 73 90 11,056 41 Total Traffic from 1st July, 1859, to dale.1.733.619 08 Do.do.for same period last year.1.431 694 54 J.HARDMAN, Auditor.METJSOIIOL.OGICAL, TABLE.Date.1860 Febl8 19 20 21 22 23 24 Thermo- meter.7 am —10 x 12 5 30 21 41 16 Barometer.29,66 29.16 29:81 29,91 29,93 29,24 29,77 3 P.M 29,42 29,45 29.84 30,01 29,61 29.25 29,36 Weather.7 A.M Ovc’t Sn’w Cl’dy Ckt’y Ovc’i Fair Old’y 3pm.Ovc’t Stiny Sn’w Fair Rain R&in Faii- Rain in inches 10a.m.0.00 0.00 0.00 Inapp.0.00 0.98 0.03 Snow inches 10 a m 0 00 21.50 1.60 ' 0.60' 0.00 0.00 Inapp Mean Temperature x22.“.Barometer 29.69 indies’ Ram tell to Ihe depth of 1.01 inch.Snow to the depth of 23.60 inches.The latter, melted and added to the funner, furnished a total rain of 2.69 inches.MARRIED.On_ the 10th Dec., 1859, at Christ Church.St.Kilda, Joseph Ward, Esq., Secretary for Railways to the Government of Victoria, to Annie, second daughter of the Hon.Beniamin Williams, M.L.C.JOKES.(From “ Punch.”) Louis Nafolbdn’s Master Stroke—France, say the French, is Paris;
