ing and many were unable to gain j admittance. The Rev.Dr.Reid was chairman.Revd’s Mr.Pitcher, Rrainerd and Cattanach were also present. After a hymn sung by a choir made up of representatives of the church choirs of this city, the Rev.Mr.Cattanach led in prayer.Mrs.McLaughlin was then introduced by Dr.Reid and prefaced her eloquent lecture by remarking upon the difficulties of her position. It was not easy for a woman to stand before mixed audiences to give addresses.Bat the necessities of tire case, the dreadful evil to be met and overcome, and the conviction that the Temperance Reform Movement was from God overruled all other considerations. The lecturer then dealt with the Temperance question. She spoke ot the dreadful aflects following the traffic and use of intoxicating liquors, to the individual, the family and the state. In sober eloquent language she adverted to the known evils of drinking usages. She referred to statistics to show the enormous growth of tho evil : the thing created its own demand. It brought men everywhere, and yet was shielded in many quarters by the use of wine and other liquors by the fashionable and cultured c'.ases.She showed that 84 per cent of the crime committed in one State of tho Uniou was traceable to drink. She drew the picture of tho degrees of degradation from tho prisoner suffering for his first offence against the law—committed ho remembered not how or why—to the hardened criminal expiating his offenses on the scaffold. She referred to the poverty that the traffic engendered. It clothed its votaries with rags. She dwelt upon the unhappiness and misery it brought into the household, and its fascination over young men, the hope of the family and of tho state. She then advised parents to begin early with their sens and daughters, and to begin right. An affecting personal experience was told of a dying mother committing lier only and idolized son to the lecturer’s care, with tho often expressed regret that she had not begun soon enough.Drink took a fearful hold upon and gained a degrading mastery over its victims. And yet no young man ever intended to he a drunkard.Young men were nut vicious in regard to it.She then dealt with prohibition. She showed that all license laws, as far as they went, were prohibitory. They wanted the law to go a little further.License prohibited tho many from selling and allowed the few—though few, still too many. Then it prohibited any hut persons of tho best moral character from selling. But license was also prohibitory to the individual seller of strong drink. It prohibited him in the manner, tho time, and tho place of sale and consumption In Massachusetts property holders could say to the saloon-keeper, “Move on.” But they wanted the poor, who though without property had other great matters at stake, to be able to say as well as the rich man “Move on.” No class legisla-free countries ! Tho poor with her young sons about her, dearer by far to her heart than any property, and who were to be the support of her age, ought under a constitutional government to be able to say as well as tho rich man, “Mo on.” “Your business is dangerous to my property ; it endangers my life and tho lives of my children ; it breeds drunkenness, brawling, and indecency, so you Tin- place of lecture will bo announced in a later issue.Choral Union.Marbleton.At an early hour on Tuesday Morning last, this place was the scene of great activity, the occasion being the annual meeting of the Wolfe County Agricultural Society No.1.Owing to the magnificent weather with which we were favored and the untiring efforts of the President and Secretary of the Society, it was in every respect a complete success. There was a large attendance of people interested in agricultural pursuits from ali the outlying municipalities.Visitors began to arrive at an early hour and by noon the show grounds presented a very animated appearance. The exhibit of cattle and horses was very fine and quite up to the standard of former years, and the three thoroughbred Sussex pigs be-longing to Mr.Daniel Moe, which, by the by,took prizes at the late exhibitions he'd in Montreal, Toronto and Ottawa, over the recipients of a good deal of attention. The action of Mr.Moe in bringing good seed animals animals into the town is much commended, and I trust that the example here given will not be thrown away upon our farmers. The Marbleton band favoured the show grounds for a short time and rendered some nice music which was much appreciated. The contractors for the new town ball,Messrs Weston & Willard, are pushing vigorously along towards the completion of that long-needed house, and from present appearance we shall shortly have a building ot which we shall not be ashamed.Harvesting here is about finished, and fat mors are now busy plowing so as to fe ready for another seasons operations, and taking all things into consideration the farmer should be a happy man, as he has been blessed with a bountiful harvest, although prices for all kinds of stock and produce are much lower than last year.THE WEAK AN» THE ISfPVRE.The merry little mountain brook, as it lightly dances over the rocks and sparkles in the sunshine on its way down to the river, is pure and clean. It is active ; therefore, it is healthy. It is vigorous ; therefore, it resists impurity. But the sluggish pool, where the current is not strong enough to keep the water in motion, is stagnant and foul.Dirt and rubbish are thrown into it, and stay there.Impurities and vile odors make it a breeder of disease and an object to be avoided. When the blood is strong and rich and red, and vigorously courses its accustomed rounds through arteries and veins, the system is hearty and healthy. When the blood is thin and poor and weak, impurities and defilements creep into it.and it has no strength to cast them out. Then the system runs down.Shaker Blood Syrup purifies and enriches the Blood; curing Scrofula, Cancer, Rheumatism, Catarrh, Ulcers and Skin and Blood diseases of every dis-cription.A Dollar a the Stanstead and Sherbrooke Mutual Fire Insurance Company. The annua! meeting of this company was held in the company’s office in Sherbrooke, on Wednesday, Hie first day of October, 1884 Among those present were Messrs.Colin Noble, C A Bailey, Lt.-Col.B.T.Morris, H.B.Brown, I.Wood, F.F.Buck,E C.H:ile,C.H.Hack-ett, and others. The meeting was called to order by H.B.Brown,E q.,the President of the company, and the Secretary of the company, M:.George Armitage, was appointed Secretary of the meeting. The annual Report of the Directors was then submitted as follows : REPORT.To the members of the Stanstead and Sherbrooke Mutual Fire Insurance Company : Your Directors have much pleasure in submitting this, theii forty-ninth annual report, and in certifying to tin; continued popularity of this old established company. The business of the year lias been satisfactory and the losses much smaller than in the previous year.We have, however, still to regret the large amount of arrears of assessments standing on the books of the.company ; and would again remind the member : that prompt payment of dues is essential to the economical management of a Mutual Insuiance Company.Much, however lias been clone in the year just part in the collection of mi cars and the t fioits of the officers of the company in this direction will not be relaxed. We would draw your attention to the amendment made to the Mutual Insurance Law at the last session of the Provincial Parliament which reads as follows : Any member of such Company who fails to pay bis assessements within six months from the time they become due, shall not be entitled to tec-over from the said Company for any loss which he may sustain thereafter; provided that a demand in writing has been transmitted, through the post, to such member for payment of the same, before such loss occnicd." 47 Viet. For a number of years past, the amount of Premium Notes held has been slowly decreasing, owing to many causes, and among them increased competition from stock companies, a general distrust of n.uiual insurance arising from the mal-ndoiini.stration of .-ome mutual companies, and also in cancellations made of undersirable risks.During the last half year, however, tiie Deposit Notes have commenced to increase and everything points to a successful future for the Company. No suits have been taken against the Company during the year, and all losses have been adjusted and paid except in one or two in: tances, where your Direc-t>rs have refu-ed to enteitain the claims made. The losses paid for the y.ar ending 1st September, 1884, amount to $16,932.62.The following figures give the position of the Company on the 31st August, 1884 No.of Policies, 6 066, Deposit Notes, $415 481.03, Property Insured, $5.329,-851.93.The
