the puck goiqg off the ice some one called time ; the visitors defence leaned on their sticks, waiting for a face when Smyth played the puck to Dawso who was off side and scored ttnü this is how the kick began, the.referee seeing the puck off the ice but refused to face ; the visitors not relishing the idea of the referee winning the match, refused to continue unless the puck was faced, according to the rules of the Amateur Hockey Association. The umpire had given game and could not do otherwise than allow it.Ten minutes reralined for play but Sherbrooke would not play unless the puck was faced where it went off the ice, not being allowed to do so lef the rinks.Several citizens of Montreal congratulated the visitors on the stand they took in refusing to continue when justice could not be dealt them.53ltD IIATTAUON SRRIEfi.The first match between the companies w»a played on Wednesday evening, when No.1 and No.2 lined up as follows 1 No.i. No.2.Horton Goal Ward Y at es Point Povey Morkill Cover MaeAulay Boyle Fraser l Centre Lougheed (.Edney ’ Davis Y Wells Fyles Rubins J Forwards McAllister Umpires M»jor.J.A. McKechnie, Referee.Winter Feeding'., When horses and cattle are kept, stables most of the winter and are fed ou dry food, they are apt to get out of condition and the spring finds animals that are not thriving, many have actually lost during the winter and have to do all tbeir “picking up” when turned out to grass. All this can bo prevented and animals made to gain all winter long by using JHck'» Blood Purifie».Note the name— Duk a not liicAarti t. 4w82 The game was well contested hut ton much time was lost in the refer»es whistle sounding for ‘'off sides,” No.2 was mostly to blame for this, but No.I tried to play a little of football and ’ost time in this way.The score st the end of time stood 8 to 4 in favor of No.1.Tho Sherbrooke Team go to Quebec February 1st, to play for the Intermediate Championship.Good luck to you boys ! continues and almost every day a fresh name previously honored and respected is added to the list of those who have forfeited all claim to the respect and esteem of the community It is appalling to dad that less than one half of the millions raised has been applied to a legitimate use.Probably so ez tensive and widespread a system of bri bery and of the prostitution of otlices of public trust has never come before the world.Coupled with the diagract ful and discreditable exposures recently made of the malfeasance of men holding high positions in the govcrnmeut of our own country the effect is depressing and disheartening in the extreme and inclines us almost to despair of human nature. In our own case tho most painful feature is the exhibition of apathy with regard to the moral aspect of the delinquencies which have been brought to light.Party policy has triumphed over every natural sense of right and wrong and the vig orous and determined cll'jrts made by partizins on both sides to burke enquiry, and to shield 0!:' 'id.M of heir own political belonging has no* ' lied to increase the esteem which v. i jglit to have for our public men.\\\\ -eliove our whole political system is who have t a distribution of this fund are furnishe i with arguments more solid and convincing than any that can ba heard on the stump.'Tho fund itself is created in a way which will rot bear investigation. It is a matter of public notoriety confirmed by recent disclosures that it is produced largely by contributions from actus! or expectant contractors with the government. An impression unfortunately exists that there is a grostd.flhr-ence between the receipt of nun y by a public man to be applied immediately to his own personal use ai.d the requiring it to be paid into the general fund which is employed for placing or keeping him in office with a good salary and all the advantages of place and power. We see no dillerenco whatever. It has been said of one of Canada's foremost statesmen that he boasted that ho bought the poupie with their own money and thoy liked it.The story may or mty not bo true but it is the tacit if not open approval of our pub.ic man tor tho methods now in vogue for securing elections which is so demor-aiizing to the country. It is admitted by all even by those who take advantage of his meanness that a man who sells his vote is a contemptible sc mndrel hardly worthy to be called a man.We have little hope of much improvement in political morality until it is conceded that the purchase of a vote is equally disgraceful and dishonorable.MR.GLADSTONE AND HIS CRITICS.The rabid onslaughts made upon England's great statesmen on every possible occasion great or small by his political opponents are really amusing. He can scarcely make a remark about the weather without its being sported and repeated and perverted until it assumes the aspect of being anti-British if not treasonable. He has been recently charged by a correspondent in the London Times signing himself “an English journalist” with writing “bad English and worse grammar.” The charge is made in connexion with a violent attack recently made upon the Premier by Mr.Goldwin Smith, and which the Times eagerly hastened to publish, the attack having been instigated by • letter written by Mr.Gladstone to a Mr Dooglaa Campbell thanking him for a presentation copy of his work intituled “The Puritan in Holland, England and America,” in which he says “The English race (I am a pure Scotchman) are a great factor in the world, and 1 believe will so continue, but no race standi in greater need of discipline in every form and among other forms that which is administered by criticism vigorously directed to canvassing their characters and claims.” The correspondent after quoting the foregoing sentence adds: “I presume it must be his pure Scotch descent that causes the Prime Minister to write bad English and worse grammar.” The animus of the Times it sho* by its condescending to publish euch .sense.The words in italics are evid> i-iyihe subject of comment. We claim that Mr.Gladstone's language is perfectly correct. The word “race” being a noun of multitude, nograramarian will deny that it may ba used in, either the singular or plural number.Mr.Gladstone uses it in the first part cf his sentence in the plural and eousequently the word “their” in the latter part of his sentence is both consistent and correct. The only question which can arise is as to the word “stands” in tho middle of the sentence. We contend that the singular number is necessarily adopted here for the simple reason that the portion of the sentence in which it is employed is obviously elliptical and must be read as meaning “but no o.ie race stands” and that the word “stand” in the plural could not possibly have been used.We should like to hear the views of the Star critic on the pretended solecism.By the way is not Mr.Goldwiu Smith's attitude a little Inconsistent ?lie poses as an ex.uberent British loyalist oa the question of home rule for Ireland, and bis are amongst the most violent and bitter attacks upon England's Premier.Mr.Smith’s loyalty on this side cf the At'antic is quite an other thing.Whilst vehemently opposed to the so-called dis-mumberment of the United kingdom he exhibits an equal enthusiasm for the dismemberment of its colonial empire. We fear that nature has endowed Mr.Smith with more than an average amount of bile.Laurier’s Hamilton Speech- The Conservative press, in criticising the speech, say it was an empty affair, but the people wbo are heartily sick of the-national policy see a great deal in it.It is full of promises. The only thing it lacks is tho endorsation of the party, and this it should receive as soon as possible. If a mammoth convention can at an early day be held it will give
