b-.Some .hght ltilHc o0 ballurl.y, the 6r.t November will doubtlessly be thrown into the Council by the accession of twelve members directly selected by the people ; and this limb ot trie-legislature will probably feel itself in a m-re independent and responsible position. The general impression seems to be, that the ministerial influence has rather lost than gained by the result. But sincerely we do not perceive how this can be.Out of the six members selected by Lower Canada, two only announced themselves as opposed to the present Administration ; and of the other six there cannot be more than two placed with certainly in the same category. It n not in tended to assert that the other members in either section of the Province are decidedly ministerialists; iusnot necessary nor desirable that the members of the Upper House should declare themselves the uncompromising adherents of any party ; it is sutfictent to know that they will not otler a factious • imposition to public measures because suen aie brought forward by the Administration : and that they are prepared to consider all questions on the broad principles ot justice ami expediency. As veteran politicians ot respectable standing, Dr.Laternere and Colone Prince will be generally welcomed to a seat in the Legislative Council. They are both occasionally peculiar and wayward in their mode of thinking and acting , but they are both men of spirit, and undoubtedly as ans-tocratic in their position and bearmggas we may expect to see on a Colonial politic*! arena.Dr.Laterriere, iu the words of a Montreal cotempotary “ is a very worthy gentleman of the old school, full ot f rend, vivacity and gallantry ; but .very much inclined to have his own way, and that way is otten a very eccentric one.— When they made him minister of Public Works, he repugned in ten days because his office was in a garret, and he did not choose to be shut up in so ill-ventilated »¦» apar:-ment.Very few of hi* colleagues would have given up place and pay lor snch a reason.” For those reasons, our contemporary thinks the representative of Laurentides cannot be reckoned on with certainty ; espc cully as during the latter part of his appearance in the Assembly he used to lean towards the opposition. That is not asatisf.i» tory reason why he should do so now ; the position of affairs as well as partie* since that limn is much changed, and a man in.) be expected to act with increased steadiness and dignity when he has been elected by so large a constituency, for a longer period, and to the upper branch otthe Legislature. We have nothing to regret because in the selections made for this unwonted accession of member* to the Legislative Uouncil, a slavish adhesion to party has been disregarded ; nor can it be reasonably maintained that the stability of the Ministry lia* been shaken in the slightest degree by the result; the rever*e appears to be the case.In the only instance in which their inllusnce may be said to have been tested, an important n-*ue was obtained : Mr.Vankoughnet, one of their ow n number, much in want of a scat in the legislature, has been returned without opposition for one of the principal
