place tomorrow and great interest is felt here in the election, as many of the citizens are voters. The excitement seems to subside relative to tho unfortunate turn the affairs of the Exchange Bank have taken ; the reassuring evidence of the bank managers doubtless has assisted largely in this direction. The hank is paying specie for circulation in small amounte and many holders of the large amounts manage to get their money paid by sending people of unpretentious appearance in with tens and twenties to get them changed. One source of trouble expected is bn the part of the bank’s customers, who have been receiving heavy discounts all along from the bank. These are now seeking to put their custom in the hands of other bankers. These in turn serntinize very closely the paper they are asked to discount, all the more critically since it comes to them from the bank in difficulties. The result to this class of customers, of course, must be annoying, if nothing worse in the end.Not mnch attention is paid ou the street to-day to the suspension of the bank. The effect so far upon the stock market has been small. The general opinion among brokers is that the immediate effects bad been discounted, and that farther effects will be felt later on, when in forcing payment of notes small failures or business trouble is caused.A considerable amount of notes dim to-day were promptly met by customer*.The Vice President sai^ *h*t *Ki» Kill- wuui i :u! he redeemed in 10 days, and the payment of depoeits would commence. There ia a general teeliug of relief on the part of other banks that the Exchange has succumbed, as it has not been doing, they allege, a legitimate banking busiuesa for some time past. Some small failures are expected as a result of the suspension, but nothing to effect trade and commerce toany appreciable extent.Alexander b orgues, farmer, has entered suit for $25,000 damages against Mr.Prefon-taine, Chambly, for false arrest.Mrs.Holden, a widow, has entered suit for $1,000 damages against Henry J.Brown, a clerk here, for breach of promise aud seduction.Antoine Proulx, shot yesterday by a companion, is in a critical state.Levi Abraham, Leopold Isaacs and Adolphe Silveratein, have entered an action for $25,000 damages against George Bury, for false arrest. The stock market was firm this morning and fractionally higher, but lost most of the advance in the evening.GRAND TRUNK RAILWAY.COMMENCING Monday, June 25tk, 1883 GOING WEST- 11.30 A.M.—Mixed Train to Richmond, Mortroal, Sherbrooke, Island Pond, and all Local St ions.8.40 P.M.—Night Osgoode Hall to-day, on motion on behalf of her father for mandamus to compel the Education Board to admit her.The grounds of refusal appear to have been not a question of colour but that there was no and in hi» dealing with the great question in which the trade, not of Montreal alone, but of the Dominion, is so greatly interested, the deepening of the channel of the St.Lawrence, he has well earned the good will and formal recognition of the commercial metropolis. We have no doubt that the proposed demonstration will be one of the most successful ever given in Canada.” Our contemporary is too clever by half iu its way of putting things. One would think after reading the above that Sir Hector was an enthusiastic supporter of the purely local scheme which the Montrealers have on hand, that of deepening the channel of the St.Lawrence, at the expense of the Dominion. When the time comes, the ticuttte will find that Sir Hector possessor “the somewhat rare faculty of being able to say yes or no with equal facility.’’ With the last paragraph in our contemporary's leader, however, we cordially agree.Sir bUcroR well deserves parish in which the reunion took place, Nothing could have been more cordial and hearty than the expressions of esteem, and gratitude which the revd.gentleman gave on the part of himself and his parishioners. He reviewed the facts, which show the generous dealings of his lordship and the Marchioness with tho people, amongst whom they have spent many years : the stimulus given to education, and their liberal attention to the comfort and health of the tenants as regards their dwellings. Not only are they provided with good houses, but they are encouraged in habits of thrift and neatness by prizes for the best kept cottages and gardens and for the cultivation of vegetables. The district has been free fçom the crimes which disgraced other localities, and the people are peaceable and law-abiding.Much of this happy contrast to some other districts is, no doubt, due to the influence of the revd.gentleman himself. He has discharged the duties of his sacred office in a becoming manner, and as a minister of peace and order, not as a violent agitator and fomenter of evil passions, which, unfortunately, other revd.gentlemen have been. The Marquis and Marchioqess will carry away with them the good wishes of those who know them best ; and parting under such circumstances is deprived of the bitter sting of sorrow.LORD LANSDOWNE AND HI9 TENANTS.The annual school feast and distribution of the prizes given to the Derreen tenants by the Marquis of Lansdowne for the best cottages and gardens has just takeu place at Lauragh school, close to his lordship’s summer residence, Derreen, which is situated iu the heart of hia Kerry estates near Kenmare. There were about three hundred children present. For these a substantial tea was provided, each child also receiving from Lady Lansdowne a suitable gift. Her ladyship also expressed to Mr.McCarthy, National teacher, of Lauragh, and to Miss O’Sullivan and her sister teachers of the female department, her appreciation of their attention and success in the advancement of the boys and girls under their charge, and of the creditable appearance of the children. The weather being remarkably fine, the children wereafter-wards entertained by a variety of sports and races, the Marquis's children entering heartily into the efforts made for the entertainment of the rising generation. The most interesting part of the proceedings, however, was that which followed—namely, the distribution of prizes for the best kept cottages and gardens. His lordship addressed the prize-winners in graceful terms, complimented them on tho condition in which their farms and offices had been found, when inspected, and upon their success in growing the different vegetables, specimens of which were exhibited outside the schoolhouse, Iu conclusion, he assured them that though he and Lady Lausdowne would be for a lime in Canada, the tenants amongst whom he had spent so many happy summers would not be absent from their recollection, and that he should look forward to his return to Derreeu when his term of office should have expired. His Lordship’s remarks were received with hearty applause by his tenants. The parish priest of Tuosiat, the Rev.Father Barrett, at the conclusion of the proceedings spoke as follows :—I have to thank Lord and Lady Lansdowne on my own behalf, and on behalf of those present, for the interest they take in the well-being of the tenants. They are doing all th^t is possible to advance the condition of the people by the HtvlH encouragement of education, by supplying them with better house accommodation, and by promoting the improvement of their farms. You are all of you aware of what'bord Lans- downe has done in the way of supporting new schools for the building and instruction of yonr children in the neighborhood. With regard to Lauragh School, the school feast and prizes which Lady Lansdowne annually distributes have been a great means of bringing the children to attend regularly. After speaking of the great value of elementary education, Father Barrett continued—Lord Lansdowne has not only built and repaired your houses, but offers prizes to induce you to keep them in a neat and orderly condition, and to cultivate your gardens to the best advantage. The tine specimens and varieties of vegetables exhibited on the tables show what can be done by industry and application. They should teach a lessou to the whole parish.Id promoting these exhibitions, Lord Lansdowne seeks no other reward but your advancement and benefit, in which he takes a deep interest.I don’t know any landlord in Ireland that is doing so much for his tenantry, I am happy to be able to bear testimony to the peaceable and orderly conduct of the people of Tuosist. We are uot only free from those outrages and gross crimes which have disgraced the country, and which every rightminded man must deplore, but I am able to say that nothing has occurred since Lord Lansdowne was last among us to give his lordship or Lady Lansdowne any annoyance. This (Father Barrett continued) is owing to the kindly relations that exist between you and your tenantry, and to the confidence you and Lady Lansdowne have reposed in them. You came and lived among us iu the most troubled times without guard or protection, and when it was not considered safe to live in Ireland. You shared in that notion, but considered yourself as safe as you would be in Bowood.Such confidence you placed in the people of Tuosist, and you were not mistaken. We all know that her Majesty has been pleased to appoint the Marquis to the important office of Governor-General of Canada.Though we regret his absence and the loss of his annual visits among us for a few years, still we rejoice that her Majesty has been pleased to appoint him to govern a most important part of the British dominions, which he will do with justice, prudence, and kindness ; and after he has discharged the onerous duties of this important office, with honour to himself and profit to the country— after his labours shall have been rewarded with success and gratefully acknowledge by the State, we hope to see him back again in Derreen in good strength and health, no way impaired by tho frosts and gnows of Capada. We wish Lord and Lady Lansdowne and family a prosperous and safe voyage, and God speed in their new sphere of life, which > is the prayer of every person in Tuosist, from the youngest -o tho oldest. His Lordship, who seemed much moved by the hearty and affectionate expressions made use of by Father Barrett, dwelt in his reply upon the pleasure with which he heard language so friendly towards himself made use of by one who spoke with all the authority belonging to the priest of the extensive and populous parish in which ho lived. He and Lady Lansdowne keenly regretted their approaching separation from their neighbours at Derreen. It was a consolation for them to reflect that that separation was not a final one, but that théy might reasonably expect in the course of time to fipd themselves once more restored to their Irish home.He looked back with pleasure to the yea*-» ho had spent among them.During all that time he conld gay with strict correctness that he had never received an unoourteope word from any of them, and that he and Lady Lausdowne had never failed to find a friendly welcome even in the humblest cottages. He gladly confirmed what Father Barrett had said as to the conduct of the people ; it had throughout these trying times been admirable ; the law had been respected, and the people .were entirely free from the reproach which had brought disgrace upon many parts of the country. He hoped that they would maim tain the excellent reputation which they had deservedly earned, and they would always be loyal and orderly subjects of the Queen, that they would continue to take a pride in the ‘ ‘ * of their build- NEW GOODS!
