Titre :
The Quebec chronicle
La ligne éditoriale du journal est définie comme suit : « [.] in the management of The Morning Chronicle we shall, therefore, begin by simply declaring, that, as we glory in our connexion with the British Empire, it will be our undeviating aim and unremitting endeavour, to create and foster a cordial attachment to those time-honoured institutions which have made her so illustrious in the annals of the world ». (May 18, 1847, p. 2)

[Traduction]
Voici les différents titres que le Quebec Chronicle-Telegraph a connus depuis ses débuts : Disponibles en ligne : The Morning Chronicle (Jan. 1847 - Nov. 1850) The Morning Chronicle and Commercial and Shipping, 1850-1888 The Morning Chronicle (Feb. 1888 - May 1888) The Quebec Morning Chronicle, 1888-1898 The Quebec Chronicle, 1898-1924 Non disponible en ligne : The Chronicle Telegraph (1925-1934) The Québec Chronicle-Telegraph (1934 à ce jour)

return with a white flag, he could count on a reply from Gen.Joubert.Dr.Bristoe inquired whether there were many wounded.The Boer replied that he had - heard that there were about seven.He declined to give any information regarding Lt.Winstor Churchill.It has rained all day and is still raîaing.London, Nov.16—A despatch from Pietermaritaburg says a le ter has been received there from Th.Llwyd, drawn by two engines, carried away the wounded.JOUBERTS DEATII DISCREDITED.The rumor of the death of Gen, Joubert is discredited.It is understood that the War Office has news that he is still directing affairs.GENERAL LUCAS MEYER.1t is al:0 rumored from Pjeter.naritzburg, that the Boer losses at Ladysmith on Thursday were heavy and included Gen.Lucas Meyer, who was either killed or wounded.The report as to Gen, Joubert probably arose from the faet that his wife has left the comp at Ladysmith for the Free State.WILI, THE BQERS RETREAT?According to the Pietermaritzburg Gan.Buller’s advance.ARMOURED TRAIN MISFORTUNES.London, Nov.17—5 a.m—Misfortune steadfastly pursues British empioyment of armoured trains, the fascination for which has given the Boers their first and Intest victories.On this last occasion the British seemed to have walked into a deliberate trap, with the result that according to the British accounts 90 men are either killed, wounded or missing, OF these the Fusiliers claim 30, and the Durban infantry 40.Tt is believed that à few escaped and that others are prisou- ers in the hands of the Boers.Macy of the wounded were brought back on the locomotive and tender of the armoured train.Capt.Holdare, of the Gordon Highlanders, was attached to the Fusiliers and other officers were with them.The list of casualties is awaited with great anxiety.In time of trouble Lieut.Winstor Churchill has proved himself mure a soldier than a correspondent, and his gallantry is high- 1y praised on all sides.RETURN OF THE TRAIN.the Government officials, the attitude of the people, who consider themselves SIX PAGES.London, Nov.17.—5 a.m.—The latest despatches from Estcourt regarding the- armored train engagement say The West Yorkshire Regiment (the Prince of Wales’ Own), commanded by Colonel Kitchener, brother of Lord Kitchener of Khartoum, has arrived at Estcourt from Durban.The troops there sleep in their boots, the utmost vigilance is maintained and it is ru- moved that some important movement is imminent.DIVIDED OPINION.According to a special despatch from Lourenzo Marques, General Lucia Meyer has gone to ria for his bealtb.Moreover, a difference of opinion exists ai the commanders.The Boer Military Council wants the army moved elsewhere, but General Juubert insists that Ladysmith must fall first.The postal authorities at Durban open and inspect ali letters from Delalagos Bay.THE WAR UNPOPULAR.‘The Cape Town correspondent of the Standard says be has heard from an old resident, who heavy bombardment all day Tuesday, and that at midnight ali the can- nou on the hills surrounding Lhe town opened fire simultaneously, poring in shells from ail points of te compase.Several buildings afire, the newspaper asserted, could be distinctly seen from the hills.A NOBLE FIGHT, Durban, Nov.16.— The Natal Merœury describing the engagement says : “The enemy apparenlly opened ire with a Maxim and two nine-pounders, gettimg ths range accurately.The fire was s) severe that L2lexraph wires and poles were destroyed.Their guns were posted on a kopje covered with brushwood and their sharp shooters were hidden behind boulders.The Dublins and volunteers fighting an unequal batile drove the enemy back, but the flerceness of the rifle and big gun fire was too much for the brave little party which was weakened at the outset by the overturning of trucks hurting several.Lieut.Churchill's bravery and coolness were magnificent.Fa couraged by him all worked like heroes in clearing the truck to enable the engine and tender to pass” A BRAVE ACT.Later details show that a heavy rain and mist compelled a cessation of firing.Lieut.Churchill bravely carried the wounded to the tender under fire.While the Boers were destroying very unpopular there, that, apartifrom the train their scouts pushed in and exchanged shots with the British pic- kets 2 few miles from Estcourt.It appears that the Boers were in ambush.As soon as the train had passed up they emerged from cover and dislodged the sleeper bolts.WOUNDED AND MISSING.L London, Nov.16.—Special despatches from early this morning.On its return it was shelled by the artil- Jery of the Boers placed in four positions.Two trucks in front of the engine left the rails and toppled over.While the train was thus helpless the Durhans and Dublin faced the Boers in skirmishing order and the Boers poured shot and shell into the crippled train.The detailed wagons were, with greab dilieulty, removed, and the line was cleared.‘The engine and tender steamed back.BRAVE MEN.During the juncture, Lieut.Winston Churchill, of the 4th Hussars, newspaper correspondent of the London Moring Post, and New York World, dis- nlaved much courage as also did the driver and fireman.It is feared the Publias and Durbans fared badly.A Red Cross party has gone out.Note—The foregoing is the same affair to which the special despatch from Pietermaritzurg refers.THE TRACK TORE UP.Durban, Natal, Nov.16—The Natal Advertiser has a despatch from Est court which says : part of the armored train was overturned by the Boers, tearing up the rails, the British alighted and exchanged volleys with the Boers.The enginc-driver, when the rails were replaced, seeing the situation was hopeless, steamed back to Estcourt he within 1,500 yards of Ladysmith, Severe fighting between (he British and the Boer forces the same day has since been reported and it is regarded in some quarters as quite passible that General Joubert, always noted for his personal courage and coolness, may have dangerously exposed himself in’ a personal pocunnais- sance of the British positton.| Even General Joubert'y most bitter enemies admit that he rought squarely and fairly and his action when Gen.Symons died in expressing his sympathy elevated him to the high regard of ail soldiers.It is claimed that the death of Joubert would be likely to lead to the adoption by the Boers of bolder and more active tactics as he had considerable difficulty in restraining his hot-headed followesw.The driblets of news brings infor- matian that Ladysmith was still undergoing on Sunday bombardment from six forty pounders.The British naval guns were silent.The Boers therefore have got more heavy guns into position, while either the British ammunition has given out or the British gunners are simply reserving their fire in view of the poor practice made by the besiegers.- The reports that the Boers have penetrated southward from Cnlenso to Chicvuly, where they are said to have cut the railroad, shows that they are adopling a proper strategic plan to impede the advance of the British re living force.Perhaps ti ay turn ont be General burger's force, which, when last heart from, was raiding Zululand, Tis Force, it be heard from ich it will pro- before fur- lv attempt to i ther reinforcements " Indeed it is already reported spent the night at Southampton.They were housed at the Hamburg-American Cos expense, while awaiting the arrival of the Kaiser Friederich.Four of the passengers wero left at Dover and ove of these, à Man named Duplace, will prabably be dead before to-morraw as a result of his terrible experience in the English channel.Mr.Duplace has been for twenty years German Consul at San Juan de Porto Rico.With him are his wife and Mrs.Ivers, of New York city, a fellow cabin passenger, who being a trained nurse and see ing the distresa of Mr.and Mrs.Duplace, hag generously volunteered to stay and nurse the Consul, declining the opportunity ta continue her journey to Germany.Mr.Duplace was suffering from anemia, and the shock of the exposure aggravated the complaint to such an extent that the attending physician told the correspondent of the Associated Press, this evening, that the Consul had but little chance of life.Like the other passengers Mr, and Mrs.Duplace saved noth- inz but what they werc wearing at the time.A COOL LADY.Dover, Eng., Nav.16.— As an instance of the coolness displayed by the passengers it is related that a German girl who had been studying art in New York devoted her time during the fire in sketching scenes on the deck.Fin ally she hurried to her cabin to secure her clothing and found it filled with smoke and al! the pictures which she had made in New York destroyed.She struggled back to the deck in an almost suffocated condition and was with difficulty placed in a boat.MR.DUPLACE DEAD.Dover, Eng., Nov.16.— Mr.Duplace died here this evening permanent adjustment of the Alaskan boundary question.WW can be stated positively that there has bren absolutely no exchanges on this subject between the two Governments since the return to this country of British ambassador, Lord Pauncefote.The modus vivendi, which was adopted to define temporarily the respective rights of the parties, is working satisfactorily and there is said to be no reason just now for pressing forward towards a solution of the permanent boundary issue.The Federal administration has about convinced itself that there is little chance of securing the approval of the Senate to any permanent treaty defining the boundary line which at the same time would secure the adbersion of Canada and it is feared that even a moderate proposition looking towards a compromise could not be framed | that would receive the approval of parties.is, However, is believed KS: be tre only of the present time.Tecen = traordinary developments of the Cape Nome gold fields ‘at the contract No.2, Moisic to Esquimaux Point.Jn the first section, Mail carriers are paid thirty to thirty-five dollars per trip.Jet us put it at the highest figure.First ond List Leip require only two men, S130 ‘The four other Liips to carey all the wail matter would require an uo afr men for each Îrip, tol ' he carried ii - some indicious managed to get part of “ tail matter held over in Cobos Post Offiee Lil the opening of avigation and this is what 1x pro- reel do be done again this winter.That this is done to specially favor the party in question is evident as | FHK CHRONICLE, QUEBEC.FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 1899.|A isa AA EE SIENS LS AS va r ye mir a — Bl a > AGE - 5-CENTS-5 SMOKING and CHEWING.Save the Coupons in the Packages.NO.22 31.my ofier to carry all the mail matter for the coast at the same figure and without any restriction whatever hay never been accepted.My tender is still in the hands of the Post Office Inspector, Quebce.‘The less mail carried the more dollars for the contractor aud to benefit one, thousands suffer.it is a down right shame and in any other part of Canada would not bz tolera However { will say no more for the present as I find I have taken more of your .valuable space than I had at first intended, but I may return to this subject again later on if névescary.! remain, Yours truly, NAP.A.COMEAU.—— Mr.Robt.Crowe, of Truro, N.S., the well-known representative of the New Glasgow Milling Co., writes: “Kumfort Headache Powders work like a charm with me.I heartily recommend thesh to all sufferers from Headache—_— THF POLICE CAST THEIR NET And Make a Large Haul — ers Gathered in, At a late hour on Wednesday evening Captain Pennee, accompanied by Detectives, Walsh _and Fleury, of the Cit;
