authoities step \u2018in and enforce # vigorous rule of compulsory vacomation. In order to show the danger that menaces Lhe public, it is ouoly necessary to re: late the following experience of a reliable physician whe was cadled on last Thursday to attend a case of measles located in a house on Chemplain street. The doctor in question un- swered the call of duty, and when he enterod the dick chamber he saw two children suffering from wmellpox and not measles, as had been led 40 believe. He' informed the mother of the children of the fact, when the poor women, in a state of consternation, informed him that four other families, her neighbors, had childeen in their houses prostrated from the same symp toms, which they thought was measles.A subsequant investigation proved that ail those famiVes were suiler- ing from smallpox, and that not ora of the members had been vaccinated. This is only ono example of the spread of the discase, and the danger that menaces the public in all parts of the Province, including the difler- ent cities, and goes to show that the Provincial Board of Health must be relax in their duty, when they lmow the serious state of the situation and do not enter into a crusade against the danger, and first commence with compulsory vaccination, and sce that this necessary precuation is carried out as it should be.HIS WORSHIP THE MAYOR INTER.His Worship Mayor Parent relative to the closing of the Civic Hospital 10 the poor.Mayor Parent said : \u201cYes, the Civic Hospital in a manner js clos od, that is, the authorities were oblig- el to place certain ueking ita ref for all the gick that they saw fie to send to this city and Le looked after at the expense of the pubic.Thin practice was becoming so notorious that the city thought that iv was near time that the practice was stop- pel.Besides, there is a class of people in Quebec who are well able to pay for their board, end 1 do not sec why they should be aduritted free of charge to ibe Civic Hospital, which was erected to accommodate the poor. The poor are nob excinded from the Civic Hospital or charged for their board.Jf there are any poor patéehts to enter for treatment.they can be accommodated by applying go the proper channels, but wo cannot allow the building to be crowded with pouple from other parts of the province at tho expense of the citisens of Quebec, nor will we allow patients well able to afford medical trestment at their homes, to he admitied to the exclu- gion of The poor that are unable to pay.I am thoroughly cognizant with the case at the liotel Dien Hospital. It was a patient who applied to that institution to have an operation performed, and who developed the dis ease of smallpox. We took that pe- tient into the Civic Hospital, but at the same time have given the Sisters of tbe Hotel Dicu to understand that we cannot make it a practice to care for every patient from obroad that they may choss ta send into the Civic Hospital, unless they are prepared to pay for their board. It is an casy matter for people from tho country to gain entrance into the Hotef Dieu or any other hospital, and hi) we do not protoet ourselves, the «tizens of Quehee
