recount in Halifax, which ended today before Judge Wallace, is that R.L.Borden's majority in this riding is reduced from 190 to 100.Four deputy returning officers put the number.ered counterfoil into the box with the ballots.Three of the rejected boxes gave Borden large majorities, and one was 3 Liberal majority.Herring Cove was the first box of this kind.It gave the Liberals about 30 majority. Then Sober Island East, Che:- zetcook and Dover, with Conservative majorities were rejected for a similar reason. The two last-mentioned polls made a net loss to the Conservatives of 90.The result is that Mr.Borden's majority is reduced to 100 over Mc- Lean and 166 over Blackadar, while Blackadar has 93, instead of the previous 23 over Crosby. The Conservatives gained 23 exclusive of the polls thrown out.The stupidity and ignorance of the deputy presiding ofhcers is the cause of the trouble. With the counterfoil in the box attached tc the ballot it was possible to tell how each slostor at Methodist Conference, —— Toronto, Ont, Oct.&—Papers on “Christianity and Social Problems” by two members of tkt English Paellament and by a former Vice-Presi- dent of the United States were among those which today proved to be of ts- pecial interest to the delegates attending the sessions of the Ecumenical Methodist Conference in this city. The status of the laborer as seriously affected by vital changes in modern social and industrial conditions and the duty and opportunities of the church in dealing with the various resultant problems were among the topics dealt with from both practical and ethical points of view.“The keynote of the church should pe nore religion in business and more business,” said Charles W.Fairbanks, former Vice-President.“Inequalty of wage for men and women, working under like conditions, is an affront to the spirit of christian religion.“The progress of nations in the last analysis is measured by the real progress of woman herself.has become merged in the machinery of which he is such an important part. And he has come to feel, too frequently, that the great church is not sympathetic toward him.Industrial peace will come through the influence of the christian religion.” A paper by Arthur Henderson of London, member of Parliament, who was detained at home by government duties, was read by T.R.Ferens, member of Parliament.“The Laborer is worthy of his hire, but not infre- employer,” was one of Mr.Henuerson's striking sentences. The time of domestic war is over and gone, but the time of commercial war is come.Like the Venetian campanile our whole social structure is in danger of collapsing. We are discoveries. They are altering have idea, and the labor world is listening for a message to the under-world of unrequited labor and toil. When we are willing to take commercial fail uré rather than to rob our feljows in God's good time there will come a better day for those who toil.Let us be faithful in the ante chamber to the great responsibility.” NEW ARCHBISHOPICAL SEES IN ENGLAND Rome, Oct.8.—~An important reorganization of the Catholic Church in England has been decided uopn and a papal bulletin will shortly be issued dividing England into three ecclesias- iastical provinces, with archepiscopal sees at Liverpool, Birmingham and Westminster. Two new dioceses will also be formed, ‘one out of a portion of Liverpool, and the other out of the actual disocese of Northampton, with its see in Cambridge. Thus the great see of Westminster will be considerably reduced in dignity, as, instead of having fourteen suffragan sees, as now, it will have only four.EARL GREY AT FAREWELL SERVICE Ottawa, showed further heaviness during most of the short session, but toward the close recoveries were general and most of the active stocks made small gains.Trading was restricted almost entire- iy to professional operations.“There was further heavy pressure against United States Steel but bear efforts met obstinate resistance. The stock at its low price showed a loss of less than a point and ended the day with a fractional gain. The fist manifested a tendency to divide itself, with the greater strength in the standard railroads. Some minor stocks particularly those whose movements derive their impetus from pool manipulation, exhibited a degree of activity.‘American Beet Sugar and Pacific Telephone were among the strongest of the industrials.American Tobacco {ssues showed further strength and American Snuff pfd advanced more shan two points. The conspicuously weak spot in the list was Allis Chalmers. The five per cent bonds broke more than seven points, the preferred stock three points and the common 2%.These issues sold at the lowest prices on record since the company was formed in 1901 with no authenticated information to account for the decline.American stocks were fractionally lower in London where a more bope- ful feeling prevailed as a result of relaxation from the recent strain.British trade reports for September show an increase of almost $11,000,000 in overdone is interesting in itssug- gestion that this city has been suffering from fictitions real estate conditions. The expected loss in cash by the banks was revealed in the bank statement. In addition to the decrease occasioned by exportation of $3,500,000 gold, the banks lost on operations with the interior. The cash decrease as shown in the average table was considerably in excess of estimates, amounting to $10,769,000.Surplus reserve fell off by $8,718,000.The weakness of Allis Chalmers market.Quotations were steady.Total sales, par value, $1,089,000.United States bonds were NEW YORK LADY OLLS LAGE Nose Gets Quarry on the Reserves of the Rowley Brothers at Lake Edward. One of the finest heads vi unove secured in this neighborhood so far this year was a fine specimen secured by Mrs.Stern, of New York, a few days ago in the splendid hunting reserves of the Rowley Brothers at Lake Edward.‘The head had a spread of 62 inches and would have made several inches more had it not been for a very sharp imturn at the end of one of the horns. One of the horns had twelve tines and the other only ten, The moose was shot about four o'clock in the afternoon at about 300 yards and killed instantly with a single shot. This is not the first one by.any means that Mrs.Stern has killed at Lake Edward.Another magnificent head which she got was unluckily burnt in a big fire a couple of years ago.She has many trophies of the chase of all kinds and as she ppends a great deal of time in the bush she as taken a large number of photographs of game of every description.Every year she passes about six months at Lake Edward.During the summer she fishes and in autumn she has her own camp away in the bush, She has now gone back for some caribou hunting and next month will go shooting in the Rockies and various parts of British Columbia, Another fine head measuring 63 inches was also obtained on the Rowley reserves by Mr.Quintard, of White Plains, N.Y.In fact every day parties are returning from successful trips and many are fitted out every day.The advantage -of these reserves is that they are so extensive and the game is so abundant and close at hand that everyone can be accommodated to suit the time at his disposal. He can make a tour of a week, a fortnight or a month or even two or three days. The Brothers Rowley have a long experience and know how to utilize it to provide good sport for the hunter.Besides this they have a very large quota of highly trained guides who know every inch of the ground which they traverse.Their grounds have always enjoyed a wide popularity among hunters of moose and caribou and this year is no exception to the rule, reports from all parties being thoroughly satisfactory.WASTED TIME AND MONEY BEFORE THEY Views of the Premier, as Well of Those of the Socialist “ Leader., —_— Rome, Oct.7—Premier Giolitti, in a speech at Turin today, outlined the policy of the government with reference to Tripoli, which seems to have the support of most of the members of the Chamber of Deputies and a great majority of the people.Signor Bisolati, leader of the Socialists in the chamber, however, writes to the Secolo, giving the view of a section of the Democrats and Socialists, differing from that of the nation at fare.Signor Bisolati was the first.of his party to be received by the King, when during the last ministerial crisis the premier offered him à portfolio. In his letter to the Secolo he says: “Now that the occupation is accomplished, it must be decided whether Tripoli will be considered conquered tegritory unconditionally, .er whether Italy is ready to compromise—stop- ping the war, sparing Turkish excessive humiliations and offering her political and material satisfaction, and this rendering resamption of the good relations between the two states possible.” Signor Bisolatl expresses the opin- jon that it would be necessary for Italy “to adopt a less brutal and dangerous solution,” so as to remove the impression that violence has been used against Turkey and that Italy should show a spontaneous conciliatory disposition, thus avoiding “such measures as may be proposed, if not imposed, by the powers.” Despatches reaching here from Tripoli indicate great activity among the Italian forces at various points along the coast in preparation for the landing of troops. It is even reported that the natives are sympathetic in their attitude. The Turkish soldiers in Tripoli are said to be in a demoralized state and although some of them are camped five miles from the city and are protected by small forts on the hills they have not even attempted to molest the invaders.THAT BALD SPOT How to Prevent It Growing Larger.Parisian Sage the Royal Canadian Dragoons were to be brought down to act as escort to H.R.R.the Duke of Connaught. To me, it is passing strange that the late Liberal Government should go to this expense, while we have in this city a cavalry regiment, to which this honor rightfully belongs ; a regiment which has acted as escort to His Majesty, the present King, and to H.R.Hthe Duke of Connaught on a previous occasion, and one which should have acted as the Royal escort during the Tercentenary celebrations, but was refused by the said Liberal Government owing to the expense of procuring horses in the city at that time.As an ex-militia officer, I can read- fly appreciate the direct insult that has been thrown at our local regiment, and also the feelings of all ranks, Where is the officer commanding No.5 Division ?Was he afraid of questioning the command of the late Minister of Militia and standing up for one of his own regiments.I can hardly think this was it, as we ail know by what Government he was appointed, I feel that this officer has willingly or otherwise, a'lzwved a direct insult to be thrown at our local regiment and has made the position of a volunteer officer doubly hard to maintain the efficency of his corps, & position which has never been a bed of roses. The injury can yet be rectified and we look to the man to do it.Yours truly , An ex-Militia Officer.Quebec, October 7,
