Titre :
The Quebec chronicle
La ligne éditoriale du journal est définie comme suit : « [.] in the management of The Morning Chronicle we shall, therefore, begin by simply declaring, that, as we glory in our connexion with the British Empire, it will be our undeviating aim and unremitting endeavour, to create and foster a cordial attachment to those time-honoured institutions which have made her so illustrious in the annals of the world ». (May 18, 1847, p. 2)

[Traduction]
Voici les différents titres que le Quebec Chronicle-Telegraph a connus depuis ses débuts : Disponibles en ligne : The Morning Chronicle (Jan. 1847 - Nov. 1850) The Morning Chronicle and Commercial and Shipping, 1850-1888 The Morning Chronicle (Feb. 1888 - May 1888) The Quebec Morning Chronicle, 1888-1898 The Quebec Chronicle, 1898-1924 Non disponible en ligne : The Chronicle Telegraph (1925-1934) The Québec Chronicle-Telegraph (1934 à ce jour)

received in the bartls, treated at the hospital at the ‘Brooklyn navy yard. The rebel losses in the fight, Lieut Martin said.were over 200.Two marines, Private Durham, of Company C, and Private “JOHNNIE KILMAR NOCK WALKER" THZ STANDARD SCOTCH WHISKY London, October 28—An interesting question at the present moment is the whereabouts of the Turkish army, of which nothing definite is known. The news that Eski Baba has been taken by the Bulgarian cavalry apparently without resistance shows that Nazim Pasha’s army is not where it was supposed to have been—on the line between Kuleli Burgas and Lule Burgas. It may be further west in the direction of Demotica, but it is generally supposed that it has retired fromy the line of the railway and entrenched itself on the long line from Demotica to Tohorlu.TURKS “STILL READY.” Constantinople despatches continue to speak of the readiness of the Turkish army to take the offensive. In any case a few days must see something decisive. The victorious Bulgarian army is still advancing.[t has occupied Bunarhissar and is marching toward Kuleli Burgas.Ît is reporated that the Bulgarians have blown up a bridge over the Tchorlu River, on the railroad between Lule Burgas and Constantinople, showing that the turning movement is making rapid progress.Unless the Turks are able to take the offensive vigorously, the present indication is that they will be driven out of Europe altogether, failing inter ference by the powers at the present stage to end the war.as happened in the Russian campaigns against Turkey in 1828 and 1878, when Russia had captured Adrianople and was at the gates of Constantinople.Diplomats Very Duwey. There have been renewed activities in the past few days and great diplomatic activity in London. The Turkish ambassador had two hours conference on Sunday at the French embassy, and an important conference was held to-day at the British Foreign Office between Sir Edward Grey, the Foreign contest the right of moving picturg show pruprictors to open on Sunday, was stated to-day by a member of the Lord's Day Alliance of this city.It was pointed out that previous prosecutions which had failed and been dismissed in the Supreme Court had been undertaken under the provincial law, whereas the next step will be to invoke the Dominion law on the subject of Sunday observance.Under the Quebec Sunday Observance Act the organizing of “theatrical performances” is forbidden, but under the judgment of the Supreme Court it was held that moving picture exhibitions unaccompanied by verbal explanations orbther representation did not constitute à theatrical performance. The Lord's Day Act, 1907, of the Dominion is, however, considered as being more restrictive in its provisions: but in order to prosecute under this law, it is necessary to obtain the consent of the Attorney-General before a magistrate may hesr a case. This permission is being sought by the Lord's Day Alliance, and in the event of its being granted it is likely that à batch of prosceutions will be attempted against moving picture shows in this city.In addition to the moving picture shows, it is probable that a campaign will be launched by the Lord's Day Alliance against other people, such as real estate dealers, who are said to be engaging in their business every Sunday, although it is manifestly forbid den by both Dominion and Provincial legislation.co CONSERVATIVES TAKE ELECTION IN LONDON, ONT.District Liberal By 25 In December Goes For Neely By 551.London, Ont, Oct.28.—In the bye- election held in East Middlesex today to fill the vancay caused by the the Conservative candidate, George W.Neely was elected over William Sutherland, Independent, by a majority of 3551.The defeated candidate is à brother of the deceased member who had a majority last December of 25.VOTE FALLS OFF, The vote cast was lightly less than that of last December, although the interest in the campaign was intense and during the last week there have been three or four meetings a night.Sir James Whitney and three of his ministers were in the riding in Mr.Neely’s behalf and the loberal leader, N.W.Rowell, campaigned for Mr.Sutherland, who had adopted his plank of ‘abolish the bar” In the closing week of the camgaign.‘The Liberal vote .was not cast strongly for Sutherland, who was evidentiy distrusted by many because of his vacillating attitude toward the temperance issue and also because of the attitude taken toward him by the temperance convention which re fused to endorse his candidature. The fact that Mr.Rowell, after this, took him up was regarded as a bad move by the Liberals and had the effect of the townships of London, North Dorchester, West Nissouri, and Westminster. The latter three are all “dry” through local option and London township votes on it this year. The result of yesterday's vote by townships was as follows: Neely.Sutheriand.Landon counsel for Charles Becker will make for a new trial for the former police lieutenant will set forth, under what will be described as “new evidence,” that Harry Vallon, the informer, fired the shots that ended Herman Rosenthal’'s life; that “Bald Jack” Rose’s story was a frame-up against Becker; that Sam Schepps, state's witness who gave corroboration to Rose's tale that it was Vallon who killed Rosenthal, while another unknown witness is ready to testify that he heard Rose and Vallon plan the murder while at the home of Dora Gilbert, who was Rosenthal's first wife.Another prospective witness, described as “a man of unimpeachable integrity.” is also ready to swear, according to Mr.Mcintyre, that Rose told him three days before his confession to McKeasie.Private Malcolm Sinclair, probably fatally, FIRST SECTION IN IGNORANCE The soldiers on the first section of the train knew nothing of the wreck until they reached Toronto. The special troop train crashed in- Junction after taking water. One of the dead men was a member of the Queens Own Rifles, Maxim gun corps, and the other was a member of the 48th Highlanders, to which corps all the injured belong. The casualties resulted from the telescoping of the first passenger car of the troop train by the heavy baggage oor ahead of it.The force of the impact lifted the baggage car from its trucks. Its walls enveloped the light coach, but its floors passed above that of the car behind, cutting away the seats and sweeping the passengers before it.The rear of the baggage car was driven about three.quarters the length of the passenger coach, mamy of the victims being crushed against the bulkhead, while others, including the two dead men, were ground between the two floors.Men Jammed Between Seats.Fully half of the injuries were occasioned by the men being jammed between the seats, which were torn loose. There were fifty-six men in the car, all non-commissioned officers and privates of the 48th Highlanders. The Queen's Own man who was killed had been riding in the baggage car with some comrades of the regimental Maxim gua cofps. He was hurled in among the others with the telescoping of the two cars. The Detroit and Chicago Express stopped at Streetsville Junction to await the passage of the troop trains. The first train passed, but as the second approached the express moved out on the main line. The troop train was running about twenty miles an hour. The crews of the two engines applied the brakes immediately and then jumped. They were uninjured. The pitch-in happened at a curve in the line, which made it difficult for the respective engineers to see each other's approach. The force of the collision lifted the fronts of the engines from the track, so that they stood locked together after they had ceased to move. The passenger car was totally destroyed, but the baggage car suffered little damage.Ambulance Corps’ Good Work. The militiamen in the other cars came pouring out, bringing the emergency equipment of axes and tools.Quickly a party was at work upon the debris. The ambulance corps were formed and as the injured were removed they were carried on stretchers tothe station waiting room.Doctors gave the injured what attention they could with the appliances at hand It was ninety minutes before all the wounded had been taken out of the wreckage and placed on the ambulance train which brought them to Toronto. There were a number of remarkable escapes.A man sitting in the fourth gent of the telescoped passenger Xr was killed; his contrades in hree feclings of the deepest regret the Chronicle is called on this morning to announce the death of Charles Mills Teakle, one of the most gifted and reliable members of its editorial staff, sporting editor and general news Writer, who died shortly after noon yesterday following a severe attack of pleuro-pneumonia, which developed two weeks ago from a cold he contracted at Boston the previous week. His illness ‘only lasted two weeks, during which he put up a stubborn fight for life, but notwithstanding the greatest care and every effort known to medical science he failed to recover.Three weeks ago Mr.Teakle left for Boston on a well deserved holiday. While in that city he contracted a cold which he did not consider serious, and In consequence paid no attention to it.On his return to Quebec he resumed his work in his usual cheerful spirits, but on Monday afternoon he became so ill that he was obliged to go to his home and take to his bed.He was stricken with pleuro-pneu- monia, and notwithstanding the care accorded him by his medical attendants and the hopes entertained for his ultimate recovery by his physicians, family and friends he died yesterday surrounded by his fond parents and his brothers and sisters. The tidings of his death came as a great shock to his confreres on the Chronicle and every member of the staff connected with the various branches of the establishment, with whom he was a great favorite, keenly feel his loss.To properly appreciate the true manhood of “Charley” Teakle one had to know him in life.He was a man of sxceptional character and possessed of £'Yarely happy and lovable disposition. His friends were legion in eve,y walk of life, and ns for enemies he was never known to have one.He was an affectionate son, who loved and honored his parents and family, and a reliable friend, as well as a man who followed the golden rule of true cha:ity. He was never known to say an unkind word of his neighbor, or take part in any conversation that had the feast tendency toward unkind gossip, Ina word he was one of nature's gentlemen. He led a clean, honorable life, and his death is « sad loss to the entire community, Charles Teakle was the son of Mr, Thomas Teakle, of the Chronicle business staff. He was born in Quebec in 1864, and after leaving school entered into the employ of the old Quebec Evening Mercury to learn the printing foreman of that newspaper, and finally had charge of the news department.Ten years ago he became identified with the Chronicle reportorial staff, and became sporting editor, also telegraph news editor. For some years he was official reporter of the Quebec Board of Trade meetings, and at the time of his death was the night Quebec representative of the Canadian Press Association. He also at times acted as special correspondent for various leading Canadian newspaoers, and had the well deserved reputation of being one of Quebec's best and most reliable newspaper men, as well as an acknowledged authority on sporting matters, He was a great favorite with the members of the Quebec city press, irrespective of creed or nationality.Mr, Teakle was a prominent member of the Masonic order, and connected with St.John's Lodge. He was also a member of the Brittanic Lodge of I.O.O.F.and in both organizations held high offices. He was a life long and devout member of St.Matthew's congregation and in his younger days was connected with the church choir and was highly esteemed by his pastor, Rev.Canon F.G.Scott, who also deeply feels his loss.Besides his parents he CYANIDE WONT KILL CAT —_29 Expert Says One-Sixteenth of à Grain Didn’t Touch One of ; 4 Kansas City, Mo, Oct.0.=Dr, W.M.Cross, city chemist, was willing to confess that he doesn't understand trial.C.L.Har- | kins was accused of the murder of a man, his wife and a young woman, Harkins’ sweetheart, by poison. The chemist for the prosecution said he obtained one-sixteenth of a.grain of cyanide of potassium from one of the bodies. He administered it to a cat, whereupon the feline “uttered a cry” and fell over dead, * 0 “I told the judge and the jury that it couldn't prosecution objected.Even the lawyer on my side was afraid. He feared the cat might die of heart failure. To convince him I told him to bring me a cat.He did.Five minutes after 1 gave the first dose 1 gave another sixteenth of a grain, That cat is still chasing mice in Nowata.I don't think [ touched one of its lives. But the court said it was not proper testimony for a jury.“Now I'd like to know what the law considers proper testimony. Then when I was finally allowed to tell the day before they brought in all the druggists in town to testify that there wasn't any good cyanide in style of ball to be delivered. In selecting the pitchers for the initial test, Walter Johnson was chosen becaube of his reputation as the speediest “slab-artist” in the game, and Napoleon Rucker, the star left hander of the Breoklyns, was picked as a “South paw” who pitches a ball of moderate speed, depending to a larger extent on “slow ball” tactics than does Johnson. Both pitchers experienced difficulty in the “tryout” in getting the ball through the rather narrow wire frame. As Johnson remarked, “We are after the man at the other end of the “range” in the real game and I don’t think any of us pay much attention to how the ball starts.” However, a little practice brought cut three consistent “scores” from each pitcher, Johnson's first record was.129, feat, per second, Rucker's 106; second trial, Johnson 121, Rucker 109, and in the INSTA fal fing 59 thejplptey™) ghrogyih- i N os 8 avid 5 6 303 io + | ‘Fruit-a-tives'—and both of whom threw at a terrific speed.he fat, OST GAVE UP ALL HOPE PF EVER BEING WELL “Fralt-a-tives” Cured Terntl Kldaey Dissise Mountain, Ont, Dec.14th ,191C, “For six years ‘I suffered from dreadful Kidney Disease. My legs snd lower part of my body were fearfully swollen and the pain was awful.Five different doctors attended me and all said it was kidney Trouble, and gave me no hope of getting well.“A kind neighbor told me to try in a short time, the swelling went down, the pain wag easier, and then ‘Fruit-a-tives’ cured me.(Miss) Maggie Jannack®* “Fruit-a-tives” is the greatest Kidney cure in the world—and will always cure Pain in the Back, Swollen Hands and Feet, Headaches and other troubles due to poisoned condis tion of the blood.S0e.a box, 6 for $2.50.trial size, 25¢.At dealers or write Fruit-a-tives Limited, Ottawa—_——— ed his speed up to 122 feet per second and Rucker increased his to 113.It seemed probable that a speed of at least 150 feet per second might be reached after a longer “warming up” period and more practice, Johnson's high mark of 122 feet per second affords some most interesting comparisons. For instance, a bal! going at that velocity has a striking energy of 160 foot pounds—half the “punch of a 45 calibre Colt automatic pistol. The 20th Century Limited, flying at a mile-a-minute gait over the rails, makes but 88 feet per second— only about two-thirds the speed of Johnson's ball.If Jobnson should throw at a man standing on the back platform of that famous train—start- ing his throw after the last car had passed at the mile-a-minute speed-— the ball would catch up and strike a harder blow than if thrown by the average pitcher at a stationary mark.A speed of 122 feet per second means that Johnson sends the sphere from the pitcher's box over the plate sixty feet away in less than two ticks of a watch—quicker thap the wink of an eye.It also means, that to be struck with such a ball in any vital spot.?Well, is it any wonder that a batter now and then “lets one go by” or that he does not always respond to the fans’ “Aw, stand up and hit em!
