saye that Pegourd “on several occasions, pursued cnemy aeroplanes, and on February 2nd, attacked at a great height and caused the fall of a German machine, Soon afterwards he attacked two other aircrafts, causing the first to fall and the second to land.” Adciphe Pegoud first came int> fame in 1913, as the originator of the flying up-side-down in an aeroplane while making experiments for obtaining safety in the air.A short time later he enhanced his reputation for daring by performing for the first time hy any aviator the feat of ‘oop.ing the loop. For his experiments Pegoud Heard About Storming Of The Dardan London, March s—Except in the central Beskid pass of the Carpathians, where the fierce Austrian attacks have moderated somewhat, the Russians are now on the offensive along the whole length of their extremely long line, from the Baltic Sea to the Kumanian border.Apparently they have definitely disposed of the German and Austrian attempts to outflank their two extreme wings and having turned are making slow but steady progress westward. After retiring right back to the Dniester River, the Russians again have crossed into Bukowina and are unofficially reported to be back in Czernowitz, which military men say is extremely probable as they already had captured Sadagora, a few miles to the north-east of the capital.Further to the west they are again mn possession of Stanislau and have crossed the Lukwa River, a forward step which, in the opinion of military experts, probably will compel the Austrians to evacuate Bukowina. In the Beskid, Tukholka and Uzsok passes the Austro-Ger- mans are in possession of strong positions whence they are continually attacking the Russians, while in the western passes, especially the Dukla, the Russians are on the Hungarian slopes, where the fighting has degenerated into trench warfare .The Russians are sending large reinforcements to this southern line.In Northern Poland the Russians are advancing slowly westward from the Niemen river and the Germans arc fighting a rearguard action.Only at one point is the German attack being scriously pressed—against the fortress of Ossowetz. Here the Germans can use their railway from Lyck, and there is a good road Across the marshes, but with their armies falling back on either side they cannot remain long, British military experts say.To the zouth, according'to a Berlin despatch, thé Germans have evacuated Myszyniec, which is right on the East Prussian border, north-west of.Lomza, while further west, near Mlawa, they are believed, actually to have crassed the border after a defeat at Przashysz. The Russians also show revived activity in Central Poland and have attacked the Germans east of Plock and near Skierniewice, south-west of Warsaw. In the western theatre the Anglo-French armics, like those of’ their Russian ally, are doing most of the attacki t latterly without apparently.making any further progress, though they claim to have repulsed German attacks which were delivered in an effort to regain lost ground. The sinking of the German submarine U-8.as officially announced today, makes the fourth of these vessels to be sunk by British warships since the beginning of the war, the others being the U-15, the U-18 and one rammed by the destroyer Badger off the Belgian coast. It is belicved that a French destroyer also sank one, and the captains of two British merchantmen are claiming the prizes offered for the first merchant captain to account for a hostile submarine. The claim of the captain of the steam collier Thordis, in connection with which the Admiralty says he probably sunk a submarne, is heing clisputed by the captain of the steamer Alstow, who says he previously sank one. There is no news tonight of the naval operations in the Dardanelles.PROFESSOR SHORTT MAKES CONFESSION DID NOT KNOW WHEREOF HE SPOKE — PARTIBAN OR IRRESPONSIBLE, MPRESS-STORSTAD ARGUMENT CLOSES KENDALL'S EVIDENCE CORROBORATED BY Hellespont) is a narrow channel in the Turkish dominions which connects the Sea of Marmora with the Aegean Sex and separates Europe from Asia.It | is about forty miles in length, vary- breadth ing in from on to four miles, The modern name of the strait i$ derived from the castles, called the Dardanelles, built on its banks at its southwest entrance. Its ancient name, Hellespont, is from Helle, daughtes of Athamas, king of Thebes, who was fabled to have been drowned in it.Xerxes, on his great expedition against Greece, in 480 BC.crossed this strait by means if two bridges of ts constructed in the neighborhood of Sestus and Abydos. It was also renowned as the scene of the death of Leander, who it is said used to swim across from Abydos, on his Asiatic side, at the narrowest part of the strait, but yet about a mile in width, to visit Hero of Sestos, on the European side. This feat of swimming the channel was also performed by Lord Bryon, who achieved it in one hour and ten minutes. To protect Constantinople coast batteries have been built since 1867 on both the Asiatic and European sides. These batteries have fatterly been supplied in part at least with ordnance of recent type, such as Krupp guns.In 1770 the Turkish defences were almost in ruins.Warned by the condition of the batteries when a Russian squadron appeared before the capital, the Turkish government ordered the defences repaired but they were again allowed to become almost useless, until 1807."CRUE In that year a British squadrow passed the Dardanelles and appeared before Constantinople, which until then had never seen an enemy's fleet. In 1834, during the Crimean war, the castles and other defences of Constantinople were again put in repair.Tt had long been recognized that the Turks had a right to prevent any foreign ship of war from passing the Dardanelles and in 1841 a treaty was signed between the five great European powers and the Porte in which it was laid down that this was not to be permitted. The treaty was confirmed in 1836, the Sultan, however, retaining the right to permit certain vessels belonging to foreign governmems to pass.By the Berlin treaty of 1878 the duty was again imposed upon the siiltan to prevent the passing of any foreign ship of war: — — ————mmm — EXPRCT IMMIGRANTS AFTER THE BIG WAR.London, Ont, March 5—"When the Physician's Advice “Indigestion and practically all forme of stomach trouble ure, nine times ont of ten, due to acidity; therefore, stomach sufferers should whenever possible, avoid eating food that is acid in its nature, or which by chemical action in the stomach develops acidity.Unfortunately, such a role eliminates most foods which are pleasant to the taste as well as those which are rich in blood, flesh and nerve building properties. This is the reason why dyspeptics and stomach sufferers are usually so thin, emaciated and lacking in that vita! energy which can only come from a well fed body. For the benefit of those sufferers who have been obliged to exclude from their diet all starchy, sweet or fatty food, and are trying to keep up a miserable existence on glutten products, T would suggest that you should try a meal of any food or foods which you may like, in moderate amount, taking immediately afterwards a teaspoonful of bisurated magnesia in a little hot or cold water. This will neutralize any acid which may be present, or which may be formed, and instead of the usual feeling of uneasiness and fullness, you will find that your food agrees with you perfectly.Bisursted magnesia is, doubtless, the best food corrective and antacid known: It has no direct action on the stomach: but by neutralizing the acidity of the food contents, and thus removing the source of the acid irritation which inflames the delicate stomach lining, it does more than could possibly be done by any drug or medicine. As a physician 1 believe in the use of medicine whenever necessary, but T must admit that I cannot see the sense of dosing an inflamed and irritated stomach with drugs instead of getting rid of the acid—the cause of all the trouble.Get a little bisurated magnesia from your druggist, eat what you want at your next meal, take some of the bisurated magnesia ar directed above.and see if I'm not right.” pying.stich: sstablishment.- made by
