Titre :
The Quebec chronicle
La ligne éditoriale du journal est définie comme suit : « [.] in the management of The Morning Chronicle we shall, therefore, begin by simply declaring, that, as we glory in our connexion with the British Empire, it will be our undeviating aim and unremitting endeavour, to create and foster a cordial attachment to those time-honoured institutions which have made her so illustrious in the annals of the world ». (May 18, 1847, p. 2)

[Traduction]
Voici les différents titres que le Quebec Chronicle-Telegraph a connus depuis ses débuts : Disponibles en ligne : The Morning Chronicle (Jan. 1847 - Nov. 1850) The Morning Chronicle and Commercial and Shipping, 1850-1888 The Morning Chronicle (Feb. 1888 - May 1888) The Quebec Morning Chronicle, 1888-1898 The Quebec Chronicle, 1898-1924 Non disponible en ligne : The Chronicle Telegraph (1925-1934) The Québec Chronicle-Telegraph (1934 à ce jour)

war will not be deprived of the right to exercise their franchise provoked a spirited debate in the Commons today, the Opposition coming out flatly footed against the proposal.The heavy artillery on both sides were brought into action and the cannonading continued until the early hours of the morning.In the course of the discussion Sir Robert Borden made a statement which will be read with more than passing interest by the country.Interrupting Hon.Frank Oliver, who in a most violent speech charged that the proposal to give votes to the soldiers indicated an intention on the part of the government to hold an election this year, the Prime Minister said: “I would like to say to my honorable friend who has just appealed to me that the question of a general election will | stand on its own merits when the time comes.We have been too busy with other things.But I desire to tell him this: “That, including the vote of want of confidence which his leader moved end which he British officers which the Canadian parliament was without right or power to impose, that it simed to introduce‘ passian and dissension where unity of thought pnd action should prevail that it would interfere with army discipline and that it would interfere with the paramount duty of the soldiers at the front.: Sir Robert Borden made a strong attack upon Sir Wilfrid's position.He took the ground that men who were risking their lives for the cause of human freedom should not be denied the right of franchise.The fathers and mothers and sisters and brothers of the men who had gone to the firing line would not look upon the measure in the “cold-blooded way” that the leader of the ‘Opposition looked upon it.The Premier ointed out that New Zealand polled er soldiers votes resciution being called Senator Beique reviewed the discussion which had already taken place, It was significant taat all parties seemed to he agreed upon the principle embodied in.the motion made by Senator D:vid.The amendment offered by Senator Bolduc contained the principle but avoided mention of any particular province.The sub-amendment also r:cognized the governing principle of Senator David's resolution.Thetefore he failed to see why there should be division in the House, Senator (Choquette quoted Father { Quinn's adlress to the French Canadian Congress at Quebec in favor of the French languase.He asked the people of Father Quinn's faith and blood to vote to give justice to French-Canadians in the question now before them.Senator David said that he had been influenced by no successes were won yesterday and today between the Meuse and the Moselle.At Eparges a night attack enabled us to make a step in advance and we have maintained our progress notwithstanding three violent counter attacks.We have already counted on the field more than a thousand dead bodies of Germans.“Further to the south, near Lamorville, in a spirited infantry action we wiped out a German company, and took prisoners the ten survivors.“In the Ailly wood we carried additional trenchés and repulsed two counter attacks.In the forest of Montmare, north of Flirey, we gained a footing in the ens- my’s defence works and Held our ground there in spite of the of forts the enemy made to regain them.“To the north-east of this wood the cable of a captive balloon was severed by one of our shells and the balloon drifted across our lines towards the south-east.“To sum up: The offensive connaissances ani-attacks whic we have carried out since April 4th between the Meuse and the Moselle have given the following results: “Pirst—On the north-east and east fronts of Verdun we have gained on a front of twenty kilometers and occupied the heights which dominate the course of the Orne river, and carried the villages of Gussainville and Fromezey.“Second.—On the heights of the Meuse, at Eparges, we have carried almost the whole of the strong positions held by the enemy on the plateau which commands Combre, and we retain the ground captured in the face of numerous and very violent counter attacks.“Third.Further to the south, near St.Mihiel, we have captured the entire south-western portion of the Ailly wood, where the Getmans were strongly established.This they have been unable to retake, despite repeated counter attacks.“Fourth—In southern Woevre, between the forest of Montmare | and the forest of Le Pretre, we | have gained on a front of seven ! to eight kilometers a distance of three kilometers two villages have heen carried and the French have occupied the heights dominating the Orne, a smali river running east and west.Similarly, according to the official statement, the French have captured the plateau commanding Combres, have occupied the south-western part of the Ailly wood, where the German: were strongly entrenched, and have gained nearly two miles on a five- mile front between the forests of Montmare and La Pretre.The German War Office sets up counter claims of successes in this region and declares that the French have made virtually no progress, being repulsed at various points.There seems to be little doubt that the sharp edge of the wedge has been moved back a distance, and there is a certainty, too, that the opposing forces are paying a heavy price in Killed and wounded.At Eparges.as an illustration of the German casn- alties, the French report the finding of one thousand German dead on the field.The situation in the Carpathian mountains resolves iisclf into one of position so far as the official statements issued from Petrograd and Vienna are concerned.The Russian report is largely confined to the western portion of the Beskid mountains, where the Russian drive has had its greatest success.The Austrian report bears on the east Beskids, where Germans and Austrians have been battling desperately in the Laborcza valley against great Russian forces, which have added to their strength the victorious troops that had invested Przemys!, In this sector the Austrians claim to have repulsed the Russians, inflicting enormous losses.“Our success in the Easter battle, in which some 10.000 unwounded prisoners were captured,” says the Austrian statement, “is.indisputable.” A French corps from Africa, under the command of General D'Amade.has been landed at Alexandria, Egypt, and there awaits orders to proceed to the support of the Allied fleet and British expeditionary forces in the operations agiinst Turkey, - An attempt has been made by a native Egyptian to assassinate the Sultan of Egypt, but the bullet went wide and the Sultan's assailant was seized.The German Government has informed the State Department at Washington that compensation for the sinking of the American ship William P.Frye by the auxiliary cruiser Prinz Eitel Friedrich and also for her cargo of wheat will he given by the Germans.Germany will require.however, that the case be taken before a German prize court, that the court may gonsider the question of the legality of the capture and destruction of the ship, and fix the amount of the indemnity.COONUO ONO NOD OVD ROCANUD VAT NUL ONATOO UOT Do You Read Much ?How often do you want a particular number of your favorite magarine, and, having waited too long, find it all “sold out” in ail the stores?Hasn't this ever occurred to you?And have you ever considered how easily this could be avoided.Drop in today and leave your order with us to nave your Magazines Sent to Your House the day of each month on which it is published.It costs no more and you are saved the inconvenience and uncertainty of trying to purchase them.JOHN E.WALSH’S Reg’d., 11 ST JOHN STREET & VALIQUET'S Breakfast Rolls, Home- Made Bread Maple Sugar, Maple Syrup.JOS.D.VALIQUET ‘Phone 1526.12 FABRIQUE STREET.Bakery For Sale FOR SALE—At Ste.Anne de Beaupre, à good house including private residence and a bakery;
