Titre :
The Quebec chronicle
La ligne éditoriale du journal est définie comme suit : « [.] in the management of The Morning Chronicle we shall, therefore, begin by simply declaring, that, as we glory in our connexion with the British Empire, it will be our undeviating aim and unremitting endeavour, to create and foster a cordial attachment to those time-honoured institutions which have made her so illustrious in the annals of the world ». (May 18, 1847, p. 2)

[Traduction]
Voici les différents titres que le Quebec Chronicle-Telegraph a connus depuis ses débuts : Disponibles en ligne : The Morning Chronicle (Jan. 1847 - Nov. 1850) The Morning Chronicle and Commercial and Shipping, 1850-1888 The Morning Chronicle (Feb. 1888 - May 1888) The Quebec Morning Chronicle, 1888-1898 The Quebec Chronicle, 1898-1924 Non disponible en ligne : The Chronicle Telegraph (1925-1934) The Québec Chronicle-Telegraph (1934 à ce jour)

.terrain effected by the devastation wrought by the Germans in their retreat, both the British and French armies in France have made further notable gains.Fourteen additional villages have been entered by the British forces from Arras southward to Ham and they have passed the general line of Canisy, Estrce-En-Chaussee, Nurlu, Velu and Se Leger. The forward march beyond Estree-En-Chauseee, places the British troops within 18 miles of St.Quentin, On theli part of the line, however, the French have thrown their cav- slry to within four and a half miles of St.Quentin and also have re-occu- pied considerable teritory between the Somme and the Aisne.Paris reports that the losses of the French troops in their pursuit of the Germans have been insignificant, Berlin in its official communication says that in the retreat of the Germans they have rendered the field selected for the coming engagement with the Entente forces useless from a military standpoint, having render- té everything unserviceable which could have been of advantage for their operations.A high German military authority told The Associated Press that the manoeuvre of the Germans had ended the plans of the Entente for their spring offensive and that from strong new positions the Germans will give battle to the British and French as they come across the devastated battlefield. From none of the other danger the country was in and showed how only by the promptest action the Emperor could save the Empire from complete cul- lapse. The Grand ‘Duke took no pains to conceal the Rasputin scandal, but when the name of the Empress was mentioned the latter snached the letter from Nicholas Michaelovitch's hands and tore it up.When the Emperor received ia silence the statement that Protopopoff (Minister of the Interior) had been foisted upon him by Rasputin, and listened to the other accusations without denying or showing signs of being the least confused by them, the Grand Duke lost all patience and shouted at His Majesty: — Do none of these things move yon?You maxe me think of Alexander 1.An appeal to the Emperor signed by seventeen Grand Dukes made no greater impression, and Viadimir Purishkevich, vice-president of the Union of True Russians and a pro.eminent member of the Duma, paid a fruitless visit to the palace on the same mission. All spoke freely te Nicholas of the growing danger to the dynasty and the neccssity of his Emperor replied: ( * ‘ “What has Alexsndr3 to do with polities?1- refuse to believe that she is unpoulsr among the people” journal à largely attended meeting of employees of the Ross Rifle Factory, held in the Recorder's Court room, City Hall, last evening, a resolution vas unanimously adopted asking the Federal Government to issue orders Tor the immediate resumption of work the Ross Rifle Factory. The Resolution, The resolution which was moved by» Mr.Gardner, and seconded by Mr.Charest, is as follows: “ “The employees of the Rass Rifle Company regret that the Federal Government have caused the factory to be closed and thus thrown out of Employment, without notica, nearly three thousand workers, “Realizing that this is z serious position for the employees, their dependants and families and for the trade of Quebec, this meeting hereby tesolves to ask the Government to Issue orders for the immediate resumption of work contiquing to manufatcure the present rifle until the necessary changes can be made for manufacturing the new model Lee Enfield Rifle.“This meeting further requests the Mayor to call a general meeting of fitizens in support of the above appeal to the Covernmen:.“Copies of this resolution to be forwarded to the Acting Premier of the Dominion Government; the Min- Pter of Militia; to the Honorable Mr.Albert Sevigny, Minister of the Interior, and others, if found necessary — The meeting.which was non-polf- tical, was called to order by Mr.Robt.Brodie, who vacated the president's chair on the arrival of Mayor Lavigueur, who was detained by a previous engagement. His Worship addressing the meeting reviewed the messages and tele- s exchanged between himseli ir Charles Ross, Hon.Albert Seviguy, the representative of Quebec Dis trict in the Borden government, and Mr.J.G.Scott, president of the Quebec Board of Trade. The Mayor said that he felt confident that the Hon.Mr.Sevigny would exert every effort in having the Government re-open the factory. The Mayor said that in a message from Hon.Mr.Sevigny yesterday, the Minister of Inland Revenue, stated that the Government had cancelled the order for serious reasons. The Minister in his message gave assurance that the Government would pro- eure work for the Ross Rifle employes.: During the course of the meeting, Mr.Walsh, president of tlic Central Labor Union, and ex-Ross Rifle em- loyee, was interrupted in his speech à woman in the audience, who told him to “shut up.” This remark aroused the big body of men some of whom cried: “Out with the women.” Others shouted: SWe don't want any suffragettes here.” ete .Order was soon restored and the meeting terminated withou: any fur ther scene.Mr.Walsh touched sarcastically on the patriotivm of the women employees at the Ross Rifle Factory, who, he raid, were respons.thle for.the smaller wages the men were now receiving. In proposing the resolution, Mr.R, Gardner, dwelt at considerable length on the seriousness of the closure of the Ross Rifle. He said ‘hat when it is considered that the weekly pay roll of this company exceeded $20,000 the loss to the citizens generally was omething that would have to be Aeckoned with.He touched in a very clear manner on what the present state of affars meant to the employees who were depending on their sal aries from week to week te provide a means of subsistance. The mover of the resolution attributed the reduction in salaries referred to by a previous speaker, to the fact that the cost of raw material used in the manuufacture of rifles, had greatly increased since the war broke out.In his opinion this was the only alternative for the Ross Rifle Company, to teduce the pay roll.He did not hes.ftate to state that the Ross Rifle Comny had treated its employees well i the past.* Before concluding, Mr.Gardner DE A SW IN ATTIRED Pa CANE MORE meeting was non-political.After reading the resolution Mayor Lavigueur congratulated the employees on the resolution. He felt confident that the Governmant would do ite duty.A suggestion by Mr.Walsh Are Depressed at Extent of Their Retirement, Quebec QUEBEC, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 21, 1917, | 5 WELL PLEISED WITH NEW RUSSH GOVERNMENT CO NSTITUTES FLOWER OF NATION; SAYS FORMER U.8.AMBASSADOR Petrograd, March 30, via Londos, March 21.—"Never since 1 have been in the service of the country has the government been composed, as at present, of men constituting the flower of the nation—the greatest and most distinguished men in every respect.” This is the estimate of the new Russian government as expressed to The Associated Press by Baron Roe sen, the former Russian Ambassador to the United States. One of the From a Staff Correspondent of The Associated Press, British Headquarters in France, March 20, via London.—The pursuit of the Germans by the British troops continues, and at places sharp fighting ensued today. This was particularly true of the neighborhood: of Croisilles (north-east of S.Leger), which is still strongly held by machine gun companies. The armies have been in such close touch at other places that field fighting tactics have been employed, the men firing from skirmish lines.Wherever the British penetrate territory formerly held by the Germans they encountered the same conditions of destruction and devastation as in Bapaume and Peronne.Only a few vilages have escaped, the Germans in these instances having been compelled to leave before their plans to lay waste could be caried out.The use of cavalry by the British and French seems to have taken the Germans by surprise, upseiting some of their calculations. In one village supper, which had been laid out, was abondoned, togteber with much ammunition, and in other places newly opened boxes of high explosives were { found with which the Germans had planned to destroy the villages before leaving. That the wholesale destruction was systematized in à manner characteristic of German thoroughness was shown by captured orders on the subject. These directed the blowing up of all houses, wells and cellars except those occupied by rearguard outposts, the rearguard being held responsible for making their shelters uninhabitable before falling back.Farming implements were all burned or destroyed.Wherever a building was spared, it was first rendered filthy. The orders also directed the assembling of filth in neighborhood of all wells for the purpose of contaminating the water, The destruction of fruit ‘rees now apparently covers the entire belt of evacuated territory, even those clinging to the walls having been stripped off.In one abandoned yosition a large black cat was found nailed to an upright baard- A cap was on its head and a cigar was in its mouth A British observation party working forward today on horesback had a rather exciting experience. The patrol was attacked with.machine gun fire by three German airpraues, which swooped very low but failed to hit any member of the party.Prisoners recently taken appear entirely bewildered when told of the extent of the German retirement.Thy said they thought it a xreat joke when they first heard of the German retirement; they supposed it was solely for the purpose of getting the British deeper and deeper into the mud of the Somme. But when it came to abandoning positions that had been fortified with months of labor there] was much depression in the ranks. Most of the German gune which formerly boomed along the Somme seem to have been utteriy swallowed up.There is no longer doubt that the main German forces had already installed themselves on the line before Cambrai and St.Quentin, but today fires could be seen beyond this line, as if the retreat had not yet been carried out to the full limit. In the meantime the picture behind the Beh tish lines is one of greatest activity.Movement has given the army crack forward will be back stronger than ever. There has been considerable criticism of the incident of last Friday, i when recruiters approached the line of ticket purchasers for the Ottawa Canadien match, on Sparks street, with a view to landing men.We are not well enough versed in recruiting to offer an opinion, but :ne of the most successful recruiting officers in this district states it was poor business accosting the hockey line last week, and did considerable harm to recruiting.Lieut.fCol Dick Greer of the Sportsman's Battalion, of Toronto, started here a year ago the most successful that the Seattle team would probably beat Canadiens at the aix-men style, some wise ones begis to smile and suggest that the Canadien leader was “pulling” his tea and getting ready an alibi. But Kennedy was only showing his hockey knowledge after witnessing the first game.Anyone knows that the six-men game is the real “epeed test”.Players on both teams cannot do any loafing and Kennedy with only seven men to call upon and a raw recruit, Couture, knew that against the speedy Seattle outfit, the Canadiens would have a desperate struggle when the abbreviated style was in vogue.A striking incident which shows the difference of teams when playing six or seven-man hockey is illustrated in the fact that the St Patricks team of Toronto, which finished low in the league standing at seven-men hockey, defested the Riversides of Toronto in a City chamg- ionship series, taking both games— because the teams were playing the six-men game.À slow team has a chance when there are seven a side, but in the six-men game the “snails” have to take a back seat, In a letter here, Emmet McDonald, manager of the Sons of Ireland states that Pittsburg has 8 very fast team and on an ice surface which is twice the size of the Quebec Arena, the Sons were at ses, though they were beaten fairly.Emmet says 4.200 people were skating at the Gardens the afternoon before the game.Evidntly the Pittshurgers enjoy the winter sport to the limit. The only draw-back to the rink — though its size is rather detrimental to good hockey—is the lighting
