Oct.5.—One of the most painful and peculiar incidents ever recorded in connection with a Canadlan court of aw occurred at Sweetsburg, Que., this afternoon, when a French-Canadian jury, by mistake, found George Benjamin guilty of the aurder of Joseph Pellerin, a fourteen yesr old boy, when they had intended to convict him merely of manslaughter. It was not till Judge Hackett had sentenced Benjamin to be hanged on November 30 that it dawned on the jurymen that they bad made a terrible mistake. One of the jurors informed the Judge that they had not known that the prisoner could be hanged for manslaughter. The Judge pointed out that the verdict was “homicide coupable” (French for murder). Then it was made clear to the court that the jury had overlooked adding the qualifying words “in-volontaire,” which would have carried the conviction as one of manslaughter, not murder. However, it was then too iste to rectify the matter, so the whole twelve men of the jury drew up a statement to be forwarded to the Minister of Justice of Camda at Ottawa, praying to have their verdict changed to manslaughter and to have Benjamin re-sentenc- The crime was particularly revolting, and the victim was badly muti- fated. The accused, who is 40 years of age, and had been working on a railway, enticed the boy Pellerin to « quiet place in Farnham, Que.on the night of August 17 last, and assaulted and killed him.He confessed to the constable who arrested him.The counsel for the defence tried to establish that Benjamin was insane, hut failed in and, indeed, their calls ahve been reduced to written music. The music of grasshoppers is produced in four different ways, according to Scudder.First, by rubbing the base of one wing upon the other, using for that the middle portion of the wing; second by a similar method, by using the veins of the inner part of the wing; third, by rubbing the inner surface of the hind legs against the outer surface of the wing covers; and, fourth, by rubbing together the upper surface of the front edge of the wings and the under surface of the hind legs —Tie-Bits.1L0OK AT CHILD'S TONGUE IF SICK, CROSS, FEVERISH HURRY, MOTHER! absence on active service of the President, Brig.Gen.F.S.Meighen, the Vice-Presi- dent, Mr.W.W.Hutchison, presided. The statements presented regarding the past year's business and prose pects for the future were most satisfactory.Net earnings for the year ended August 31, 1917, were $149, 747.78.Since the bonds of the Company mature in 1933, the sum of $900,- 000.00 was transferred from Surplus Account as a Redemption Account. With this amount provided for and this year's surplus carried forward, Surplus Account now stands at $831,- $83.58, somewhat lower than last year. The annual report consained an optimistic message regarding the quality and quantity of the western crops and looked forward with confidence to a steady run of all mills this year. While Canadian mills have been shutout from their export market, Pur chasing Departments established by the Allied Governments are now taking the surplus products of all mills as well as regular established mill brands for commercial regarding the famous map (carte au lisere bleu) with the bles border, drawn in 1815 by the Austro-Germans shewing Germany's claim to all the territory which used to belong to the Germanic empire from the Franche Comte to Dunkirk. In s recent ac- ticle of teh famous Berlin paper Die Vossische Zeitung this phrase appeared: “We are ready to enforce our eight up to the treaty of Verdun.” This is not mere brag, ae one might be tempted to believe, says M.Camille Julian, The whole of the german Jouth bas been systematics! y brought up to a recognition of the rights of the holy German Empire. And in order to instill this recognition thoroughly, every means has been thought good, and among others was precisely the use of the famous blue-bordered map.A few months before the war, ln March, 1914, boys in the average and upper classes of the whole of Germany, and particularly at Metz, where I saw these books, were studying, as recognized school books, small atlaes in which & colored line showed the limit of the former Germanic empire; and ¢his frontier was not only indicated on the maps which referred to this empire, but even on those of contemporary France, with the explanation: “The line ahows the territories which once formed part of the Germanie empire” Thus tens of thousands of young men, looking at the map of France in the nineteenth concluded that she otill kept, sguinet all historic right, territories belonging to Germany. We may be quite certain that if victory permitted it, none of tehse pretensions would be forgotten, The Temps goes on to point out that it is not only in the school books that this influencing of public opinion is carried on in Germany but that it is the great aim of German publications which spread teh idea of German aggrandizement throughout the entire people: Recently a Pan-German review published the views of Herr von Spantz 8 Saxon who has become a Prussian official and Is vice-president of the Pan-German League. His program with regard to France is as follows: “Only a territorially diminished France, limited to her primitive frontiers, will give up ail idea of revenge and will consent to an alliance with Germany. We will once more become possessed of all those territories which once belonged to the Empire and the German peaple, that is $0 say Burgundy, with French Lorraine, Flanders, Hainault, which felt into French hands after Alsace.Besides we want Belfort and Montbeliard with the Alsatian Sundgau, the possession of which enabled France to invade Alsace in this war” It te well that those who enjoin respect for German development should read scch things, comments the Temps. They are not all Russian extremists, German development means the ma.tilation of France.WEAK BOYS AND GIRLS It is a mistake to think that anae- mie fe only a gitl's complaint, Girls probably show the effect of weak, watery blood more plainly than boys.Delayed development, pale faces, headaches, palpitation and a feeling of lstlessness, call attention to weak blood In the case of gly.But many boys in thelr teens gre 4 thin and “weedy and have pimc'es on the face Jhowin that they have not enough” blood. The anaemie boy is just as likely to become a victime of eonsumption as the pale, breathless girl with her headaches and worn-out look.Let the boy In this condition catch cold and he will lose his strength and his health becomes precarious. To prevent serious disaster to those of the rising generation let both boys and girls be given the new rich blood which Dr.Willlams' Pink Pills are famous the world over for making. When giving these pills watch how soon the appetite returny and how the languid girl or the weak boy becomes full of activity and high epirits.Remember that {he boy has to develop, too, if he is to make a strong hearty man.Give both the boys and girls a fair chance to develop strongly through the new, rich blood Dr.Wiltlame' Pink Fits actually make, You will then see actire boys pad site instead of weakly child round you.v.Willams ink Pills are sold sil medicine deniers or may be tained by meail at 00 cents ¢ box or six boxes for $0.80 frem The nations.‘There seems to be no doubt that in prehistoric times the whote valley of the great river was peopled wiah various Celtic tribes, for they have left many traces of themselves, amongst others the names of -various great cities, such as Mainz and Worms. When the curtain first lifts on history, however, the Celts are seen re- treting steadily westward before.the oncoming of the Teuton hordes from the wilds of Central Europe. This movement probably begsn some where about the Fourth Century B.C., and it was not held up for any Julius * Caesar, hower length of time until the advent of the Romans, followed Caesar in this great conquest in Gaul, qcickly sw the strategic importance of the Rhine, and devoted himself, as did all his successors, to its fortification to the utmost extent. The result of the Roman occupa- | tion was that the left bank, of ¢the Roman bank, developed.enormously in its civilization, and to this day the traces of the Romans may be fdend everywhere thereabouts, in their wonderful roads, bridges, and ague- ducts, and the various other remains, 28 those to be found, for instance, at |.Trier, Ultimately, of course, when | the Empire began to decline and the strength of the Roman positions on their frontiers.was 30 reduced that they steadily yielded at various points to pressure from without, the Rhine land was quickly invaded by the Teutons who,( pressing .downward into Gaul, overran the whole country. The river thus became a German river, and its valley, slong with the rest of Gaul, sank into a condition of semi-bacbarism, until its civilization was revived in the eighth century by Charlemagne, who had his seat of government at Aix- la-Chapelle.In the next reign, Charlemagne’s dominions were divided, and the Rhine at first formed the ‘boundary between Germany and the Middle Kingdom of Lotharingia. This condition of things obtained utnj 870, when the Rhine Valley became en- | tirely German territory, the frontier of the German dominions being pushed on westwards beyond the river.Thereafter, the Rhine Valley remained a German possession for over 800 years, and it was not until Louis XIV's famous coup in 1681, when he captured the city of .Strasburg, the the French again gained a footing in the valley.By the peace of Ryswick, in 1697, the whole of the Reichsland was ceded to France; and the Rhine, once more, became - the frontier between the two.countries, This idea of a France which coincided with the Gaul of Caesar, having | the Rhine as ite frontier, was one very dear to the hearts of the Frenchmen, and In 1801 its delimitation was thus confirmed, In 1818, however, the lower part of the Rhine Valley was ceded to Germany, and, as ail the world knows, after the war of 1870-71, by the enneration: by Germany of Alsace-Lorraine, the Rhine became once again “a German river and not a German frontier.” As 5 matter of fact, of course, the Rhine shares its antlonality with three countries, namely, Switzerland Germany, and Holland.Indeed for no less than 233 miles of its total fength of 850 miles, the river flows through Swiss territory, winding its way in and out of the Bwiss valleys until it reaches that famews sharp turn to the right by the frontier town of Basel. It is, however, the German Rhine whith Is mes: famous tor the beauty of its scenery, for when the river finally debouches into Dutch territory, it rapidly degener- | stes.Ite banks are low and - often have to be strengthened by embank.' ments, and by the time it approaches the coast it becomes an unimportant river, ultimately finding its way into the North Bea throu, « moderniy constructed canal.BAN, though the name Rhine thus, at fast, attaches to 8 very insignificant stream, the entire district between the Waal on the one side and the Yssel on the other, which was of course, the Insuls Bataverum of Caesar, in geality belongs to the dels of the famous river, .co DOMESTIC
