Titre :
The Quebec chronicle
La ligne éditoriale du journal est définie comme suit : « [.] in the management of The Morning Chronicle we shall, therefore, begin by simply declaring, that, as we glory in our connexion with the British Empire, it will be our undeviating aim and unremitting endeavour, to create and foster a cordial attachment to those time-honoured institutions which have made her so illustrious in the annals of the world ». (May 18, 1847, p. 2)

[Traduction]
Voici les différents titres que le Quebec Chronicle-Telegraph a connus depuis ses débuts : Disponibles en ligne : The Morning Chronicle (Jan. 1847 - Nov. 1850) The Morning Chronicle and Commercial and Shipping, 1850-1888 The Morning Chronicle (Feb. 1888 - May 1888) The Quebec Morning Chronicle, 1888-1898 The Quebec Chronicle, 1898-1924 Non disponible en ligne : The Chronicle Telegraph (1925-1934) The Québec Chronicle-Telegraph (1934 à ce jour)

whether they were started by the Russians is not imown.Although the German communication says the Germans suffered no loses, during the landing on Oesel Island, the Petrograd War Office says that in Bele f devoted this morning.A pleas- jog illustration of the tender sympathy with suffering of the late Mr.Osborne is aForded by a visit paid by bim a few days ago to Mr, Jordan's bedside, where the two former rivals In local journalism held pleasant con- werse, and it is a striking commentary upon the uncertainty of life and in fact of all mundane affairs, that only on Friday last Mr.Osborne phoned so the writer of these lines to make &n appointment to call together again en Mr.Jordan.this very Monday afternoon. And now one of those who were ta have made the call and the one wha was to have received it Bave alike heen cut off fram the land of the living.Verily in the midst of Ble we are in death! THE LATE JOHN JORDAN.There passed away at his late residence in this city on Saturday lats.after a long iilness, one who for a nuniber of years was the editor of this paper, and one of the best known Of the many who have ever filied that position.Mr.John Jordan was a Bative o: this city, in which he was "born slightly over 74 years ago.Edueatud at the Seminary of Quebec and at Lava! University, he studied law, and was admitted to the Bar of Quebec at a comparatively early age.His associates and Iriends in his student days and in the early years of his practice were some of the stalwarts of liveralism in its early days in Quebee, such as the late Judge Plamondon, the late Judge Fournier, the late M.A.Hearn, K.C, the fate Judge Henri Taschereau, besides others more nearly of his own age. From them he imbibed the principles of that political faith of which he be.eame from that time onward so stendiast and 10 valiant a champion. His devotion te his political friends proved stronger than his love for the law, and his ever ready and virile pen did them such excellent service that Le gradusily found himself, like so meny others of the seme.profession, exchanging the pursuit of his law books for the editorial sanctum. After baving contributed for some time to the liberal press of this ¢ity and to Be Torents Clobe, Mr.Jorden, in he early seventies of the last sentury t- Y Printed and published by juined the staff of the Chronicle, succeeding the’ late Wiliam Leslie Thom shortly thereafter, as editor-in-chief, tHe was succeeded in that position by the late Dr.George Stewart, and later on became the editor of the Daily Telegraph, a position which be only abandoned somewhat less than à year ago, when compelled to retire from editoriel work by increasing illness.Ver many years Mr.Jordan also filled the office of assistant English translator to the Legislative Assembly, retiring from the office à year or two ago upon 8 pensies.Thoreughly vers- td in the political history and traditions of the soussy, and especially of the provines of Quebec, he witlded & pen than which mens was more trenchant or incisive. His friends were many, and the acerbity of some of * the controversies in which he found himself Involved from time to time, never apparently made any difference in his personal refations to those who expressed themselves on the other side of the arguments in question, as they certainly never at- fected their kindly regards for him.He wae one of the amet companionable of men, and few, eves of his age, could draw upon s reser fund of interesting reminiscences of his early days.He enjoyed the friendship of many of maturer years than ble own, and amongst those of his contemporaries who fall wader this classifiea- tion, and who belonged to a generation of members of St.Patrick's con- sregation which is fast passing away, may be mentioned such men as the ‘ate Hon.John Hearn, the late Hon.John Roche, the lste Owen Murphy, the fate M.F.Walsh, the late John Giblin and many others. His death removes the dean of journalism in this city. His connection with the Press Gallery of the Legislature dates alpost from Confederation, and he was more than once its president. But few of those who occupied teats there with him during the first decade of Confederation now survive. It is indeed à striking and a sad coincidence that two of those who have filled the highest seat in the editorial sanctum of the Chronicle should have passed away on the same day, The Chronicle tenders its sincere and respectful eympathy te Mrs.Jordan and to the members of her family upon the occasion of this bereavement.CO THE LATE WILLIAM PIKE OSBORNE.Mr.William Pike Osborne, the late editor of the Chronicle, whose sad fate is related in another column, and is the cause of such wide-spread regret, was born thirty-seven years azo in England, where his father, the Kev.James Osborne is the rector of a parish in Lincolnshire. He came from England while quite a young man immediately after leaving col- Î:ge, and went from here to the South African war, serving throughout that campaign. Some ten years ago, after Laving married in England, Mr.Osborne returned to Canada. For the greater part of this period he has ten the editor of this paper, and while it is ahsolutely impossible for any journalist who participates in political discussions to please everybody.our lamented friend and fellow- worker turned out a large amount of very useful and often very brilliant work, proving himself, over and over again, not only a master of terse and vigorous English, but also a poet of no mean order. His campaign in support of the movement of Sir William Price to raise a Quebec regiment for the present war was one that did him infinite credit.Tntensely loyal to his king, his country, his paper and his friends, he succeeded in making many of the latter.who enjoyed his quiet, unostentations manner, his even temperament, and his well-stored, scholarly mind.A manly character, with a vigorous bodily frame, W.P.Oshorne was deeply imbued with an F.nglishman's love of out-door sports. He was a keen disciple of Izaak Walton.and few residents of Quebec who have lived here all their lives know more about the varlous lakes or the mols Jn river or brook within a few hours of the cit .where the speckled trout chiefly resort, or are better sc.queinted than he was with the various devices for tempting them.In cricket, us In squash-ball snd in lawn tennis he stways excelled, and was a lover and a generous sapporter of all clean sport for the pure love of the sport itself, His cutting off In the very prime of life is a distinct Toes to the community in which he had made his home, as it is to the Chronicle and to his many persons! friends. What it means to his wife and little children none but thay con mew.The sympathy of the management and of the entire otaff of this paper goes out to them; and all who know them, as well ce many who may now hear of them for the first time, will undoubtedly join in the prayer thet the God of the fatherless and the widow will be their consolation and support A bright sad promising young life went out on Saturday in the drowa- ing disaster at Lake St Joseph, when Mr.Clement Henchey west down to his death, together with his friend Mr, Osborne, by the swamping of the boat in which they were returning from a duck hunting expedition. The decessed was the son of Mr, and Mrs.John Henchey, of Cremasie street, and only 87 years of age.He was educated at St.Patriek’s School, and upon leaving it entered the jour.nalistie profession as à member of the staff of the Daily Telegraph. There he remained from 1908 until the spring of 1914, when he took charge of the sporting page of the Chronicle. From this he was promoted to the position of shipping reporter and was subsequently given a post on the city staff. In every capacity in which be wss employed on the Chronicle our voung friend gave entire satisfaction.By hia resdimess to shoulder every burden isid upon him, no matter bow heavy, and by his cheerfu! alserity to serve the interests of the paper under ail possible circumstances, he grined the confidence of the management and the friendship and goodwill of every member of the staff. His strong point was his conscientious discharge af duty; and by his associates, as well as by all who knew the value of his work, a brilliant future was confidently anticipated for him.His sorrowing parents and other friends have the sincere sympathy of the Chronicle in this sad trial The Chronicle expresses its deep appreciation of the many masks of sympathy which have come to it In connection with the tragic death of two leading members of its staff in Satarday’s disster at Lake St Joseph.Ever since the oad news reached the eity, messages of condolence have continued to pour in to the office from all quarters by mail, by telegraph ard by phone His Worship Mayor Lavigueur, the Hon.Mr.Sevigny and the Hon.GC, F.De- ‘age, are amongst the many who call- sd personaîly at the office to tender their sympathy.o n £ PRESS COMMENT.a
