hill to the east and northeast of Lemberg is entrenched with barbed wire entanglements.\\ Forest of Bieloviesh The forest of Bleloviesh, the largest wooded tract in Europe, is virtually within the Bolshevik Ines, owing to the advance of the Bolsheviki trom the northeast. Before the war the forest was ‘the home of thousænds of buffalo and bears and thers were many hunting preserves. When the The war office communication f2- sued yesterday announces that the Poles have withdrawn from the northern front in accordance with plans along the line of Graievo, which is near the East Prussian boundary, extending southeast to Oesovets, to Kamienioesz Lietovsky to Kobryn. The Bialystok raliroad extends northwest through Ossovets to Gralevo which apparently takes Bialystok within the Bolshevik! lines.Mamienietz Litovsky is forty kilometers north of Brest-Litovak, The Bolsheviki withdrawal on the extreme left; the Reds are well beyond Poland's line set by the Supreme Council and 60 kilometers from the line in the region of Brest-Li- tovsk, The withdrawal in the center also continues, owing to the northern pressure.Along the Styr and Bereth the communication says, the Poles are received a communication (rom the United States pointing out, among other things, that the United States is unable to recognize Japan's occupation of the northern half of the Island of Saghalin. The Nichi says of the nature of the protest, however, that the impression exists here that the communication is not really a protest but rather an exposition of the United States viewpoint on occupations of Russian ter- gitory with something of the United States attitude towards the territory to be occupled. It is apparently feit here that any publication of the details of the note should emanate from Washington and not Tokio.Meanwhile it Is considered likely that Japan, after mature deliberation, will forward an answer to Washington in an attempt to clarity ofticial opinion thers and remove any misunderstanding of Japan's position.Appearances here indicate that Japan is passing through another “nervous crisis” concerning her re-, lations with the United ’Ntatés.Numerous interpellations have been made in the Diet about the United States ‘attitude, and while the important newspapers are counselling their readers to keep cool it is apparent that a certain amount of apprehension exist concerning the result of the congressional} inquiry in California. The Japanese however, seem convinced that it is being conducted with the utmost fairness and attention is being called to statements that a number of United States c!- tizens have come forward spontaneously to testify In favor of the Japanese.Among the incidents which have tended to fan anti-American feeling was the publication of the reports that the burning of Japanese stores in Marysville, Calif., was possibly the act of Antl-Japanese elements.Articles also have been printed declaring that United States citizens were engaged in attempts to steam Japanese maps, and these have resulted In increased surveillance of tourists from the United States.Japan's intention to occupy Saghalin was the subject of an interpellation recently In the House of Peers.Ichizso Hattorl, former Governor of Hyogo Province, wanted to know whether Japan intended to occupy Saghailn permanently In event of failure to obtain satisfaction in the Nikolalevak massacre from such « government as might eventually be established in Russia.Premier Hara, replying, said it would be detrimental to Japan's interest to discloses what the Government proposed to do If no satisfactory settlement of the Nikolatevak massacre was found.HAD GUN FIGHT WITH BANDITS Band of Robbers Had Looted Bank at Grass Lake, Near Jackson, o'clock Chief Enginesr Vergos, who was standing on deals near the rail of the vessel, next to the pir, when Oller Maurice Holliger and Auguste Lenvoise approached him, and were advised by him to go to bed. There were no loud words or any sign of altercation, when Holliger suddenly struck the Engineer with his fist under the left jaw, causing him to tall overboard, between the ship striking against the pter as he fell.He sank Immelately and did not ris» again. An alarm of “man overboard” was immediately given and a ship's cutter launched in an endeavor to save the Engineer but’ without avail, as he had been drowned, or perhaps killed before he had struck the water. The news of tie tragedy was communicated at 4 o'clock yesterday morning to the men in charge of the Louise Docks Crom Wall draw- terested in the tourist business that the rush will continue for the next which will keep the Joseph Chevanel of Riviere 155 St.Joseph Strest, Quebec.Ris tt brilge, who later went to the scene and by means of a grapple succeeded in recovering the body at seven o'clock, and on landing it on the dock discovered a deep gash at the side of the Engineer's neck under tire left chin. This gash may have been made by the Engineer striking a projection of the pler as he fell overboard, as the bridgemen, George Gravel and Romeo Rochette.who brought the body to the surface, my the grappling irons had caught in the clothes of the Engineer at the chest. The wound ocertalnly was made while the man was slive and before he fell Into the water, as the wound bied after the rescue, a circumstance medical men say, would not have occurred it the wound had been in- ficted after his death.Story Told By Eye Witness Mr.Henri Talbot, foreman of the MoKay, boiler and engineering works, who was an eye with 1.080 pas sengers including 139 firet-class, comprising the Imperie! Preas party who were landed at Sydney, NB, 263 second and 689 third-class, arrived in Quebec jweterday morning at 6:45 o'clock.Capt.H.IL.Walte, commander, and officers of the Vietorian report an excellent pamage.of the greaNet interest on account of the installation of the wireless telephone, which was a feature of the trip.Wireless "Phone System. The wireless telephone system installed in a specially arranged house on the upper deck aft of the vessel, ts well worthy of a visit of inapec- tion. There was one loud speaking receiver through which all messages received could be heard in all parts of the ship. There were six different connections throughout the vessel and one loud ,recelving connection in the second cabin saloon.Yesterday morning after the arrival of the Victoria, the Chronicle representative was courteously invited to inwpect the installation en the upper deck, when the operator in charge opened the connections when wireless coulé be heard among the shipping speaking at ses.and a message of communication from Clitden, Ireland with Newfoundland. There was nothing out of the usual) to report In connection with the trip.except that one of the crew names Halton was severely injured by fall- Ing down the ship's hold when the ship was three days out from: Liverpool, and on arrival yesterday morn.Ing with the ship, was conveyed to the Jeftery Hale's Hospital for treatment. The third-class pamengers were {anded at 8 o'clock and conducted to the Immigration buildings for inspection, anl did not leave for their Western destinations until the afternoon. The reason for the delay was that the ship came away from Liverpool without landing cards.and besides a new system just adopted by the C.P.O.8.steamers carrying passengirs was being used for the first time, which does away with the usual manifests. Therefore the Vietorian arrived at Quebec without a passenger manifest and for the first time used the new system called form “A”, that was new to the immigration officials and the ship's clerfeal staff. This includes a card of registration, that, when filled in, are sent direct to the immigration head office at Ottawa as recorls.and !t is said that when the system !s well tried and experience caums the ship's clerical force and immigration officials to become familiar, it will be an improvement over the past handling of passengers and registration of arrivals for the Government that will require less official handling The few first-class passengers that came to Quebéo with the secend- class were forwarded te preparation of New Volumes to be added to the present 11th Edition and has a large staff at work, both in London and New York. The Edition and has a large staff at work, both in London and New York. The Editor estimates that almost 70 p.c.of the new matter will be devoted to questions connected with the War, for, although every subject needing fresh treatment will be brought up to date, there are not many miscellan- cous developments which call for extended additional space, apart from such special activities as aviation, automobiles, moving pictures and a few other among the industrial, economic and social advances reflected In the opportune census ef the Unitod States for 1920.The Supplement will consist of three volumes, each of the same size, and containing about the same amount of matter, as the volumes now in use; and these three, in combination with the existing 29 of the 11th Edition, will constitute the 13th Edition, completely providing for the needs of the English-speaking world during a great many years to come. The First Edition of the Britannica appeared in 1768, the Second in 1777, the Third In 1733, the Fourth in 5301, the Fifth in 1818, the Sixth in 1823, the Seventh in 13830, the Eighth in 1863, the Ninth in 1875, the Tenth In 1902, the present Eleventh Edition in 1911, and the Twelfth Edtilon will appear in 1921.For the first time in its history of 150 years, The Encyclopedia Britannica was, in its 11th Edition, published in two distinct forms, the “Cambridge University Issue,” with large type and broad margins and the “Handy Volume lue,” with à smaller page, smaller type and narrow margins, at a lower price, thus making the Britannica a work for rich and poor allke. The Supplementary Volumes will stmilar- iy appear in two forms, matching both issues. The Edition and the contributors, supported by the prestige of The Encyclopedia Britannica, have found among the official classes of the countries lately at War, hostile as well as allied, the greatest readiness to supply Information and to give access to all documents. All this material from varied sources is being‘ carefully investigated.A fair and unprejudiced study of this chapter of history, regarding it with absolute calm, is needed in order that our present attitude and our plana for the future may be intelligently directed, and the Editor evidently adopts this practical pont of view, since he informs us that he will be glad to receive and consider any suggestions in regard to the services which the new volumes can render to the public.Constantly enlarging helpfulness has, indeed, always been the policy of the Britannica. The Scotsman who planned the First Edition of 1768 announced that he would provids the pubilc with scientific knowledge In language that the public could understand, but he gave very little space to geography, history or bloxraphy. The article on France filled only 13 lines, and the article on Japan was in two lines es follows: “Japan or Islands of Japan, are situated between 130' and 144' of B.Lon.and between 30° and 40° Nlav" It is true that this exclusive devotion to science had its advantages in a day when the popularising of science was unknown, but today the most valuable of all the Britannica's characteristics Is the thorough universality with which it embraces every kind of knowledge, The Editor expects to have the new volumes completed for delivery to the public next year.Ecumenical Conference, which 10 being hoid in England in 1921.Mre , ia one of the first women chosen tp attend thir delegates letting others know how thankful 1 am for what Tanlac has done for me,” declared Mrs Anna Lachance, well known resident of 849 SL Germain Street, Montreal.“I had no appetlte, and my stomach was in euch dreadful condition that everything I ate would cause me to bloat all up with gas.1 had such a terrible pain in my back 1 could hardly stand it, and was so nervous that even the little noise the children wade about the house would almost drive we to distraction. At night 1 was so restless I could scarcely sleep and in the morning 1 would become so dizsy that, after preparing breakfast, I would simply have to lie down again for several hours before 1 could go about my other housework.“After taking a lot of other medicine without any improvement, 1 Jdecided to try Taninc, and the way it relieved me of my troubles is nothing less than remarkable. Why, I began to get better from the very first, and am now feeling just fine.My appetite is so splendid I'm always glad to see meal-time come, and everything agrees with me so perfectly 1 never have à bit of trouble with my stomach. The pain has entirely disappeared from my back, and my nerves are just as steady as a clock. My sleep is sound and refreshing; and I'm never bothered with disziness. After all Tanlac has done for me, I can't help but endorse it, and I hope everybody suffering like I did will give it a trial, for I firmly believe it is just what they need.” Tanlac is sold in Quebec by Jollcoeur's Pharmacy and by Martet & Dion, and in Levis by Maurice Dion, under the personal direction of a special Tanlac representative.Chronicle Files 100 Years Ago Dangerous Practice. We hear frequently of instances of persons wantonly discharging firearms in their yards and gardens in the suburbs, and and W.Gibsone, Trinity Church. The Crops. The long continued drought has done an immense amount of harm to the crops in the parishes along the shores of the lower St.Lawrence.Hay has been 8 complete fallure and in many localities grain and potatoes trict of Quebec, however, suffered much less from the drought than the country either to the east or west of it.The hay crop is a good average one and is all safely housed, and oats and potatoes promise well. The same remark applies to the Laks Bt.John and Saguenay countries, Uoger's Famous Sermon.Students of Canadian History will thank Mr.P.George Roy, of Levis, for publishing in neat, compact form, Pere Olivier Goyer's famous sermon, pronounced on the occasion of its death of Count de Frontenac, 19th December, 1698.It was, as our readers will remember, preached at the Church of the Recoliets, here.It is an eloquent eulogy from the first page to the last and abounds in tine phrases and allusions.mme C.8.WHEAT FROM LAST YEAR'S CROP
