that he was surrounded by a party of thirty to forty persons who were putting questions to him on religious subjects. This crowd had collected around Mr.Gendreau UNSOLICITED RT HIM.They saw him sitting on the stopped bench, and stopped of their own accord to ask their questions. These same witnesses proved that when the crowd had reached the above number Mr.Gendreau remarked that he had better go away, to which Home of those present replied that it would he better for him.Gendreau then left, followed by the shouts and insults of the assemblage.Otie witness, Ohas.Thlbaudeau, called for the prosecution, testified that Gendreau was talking quietly and politely to one of the party when others began to insult him, whereupon the defendant went away, as sworn to by the other witnesses.Mr.Gendreau was arrested on the charge above stall'd, and yesterday forenoon was convicted and tim'd $•> and costs, or in all $19.55, in addition to ids own costs in the case.Recorder Porlnn, of Sorel, in delivering Judgment, said ho would not allow religion to Influence him in any way.It would be necessary for him to go outside the record to explain the facts.P'or twenty-one years he had been Recorder of the city and town of Sorel.During all that time Protestants and Roman Catholics had lived peaceably together, but now there was a strong feeling of uneasiness, lie had frequently been called upon to deckle matters arising out of this unrest. The consequence of Gendreau’s sitting on this bench in the square was an inevitable religious discussion; a crowd assembled, insults followed.Gendreau was the sole cause of this gathering.Religion was ALTOGETHER TOO MUCH DISCUSSED.and a stop must be put to it.He therefore condemned the defndant to the penalty before stated.Following the precedent of the Recorder Dorlon, and going outside the record in this case, the Protestant mission at sorel lias had immense diflicul-tles to contend with in the prosecution of their work. The present work was begun In May, lv.i_>,, and ever since that time the missionaries have bqen subject to the Insults of the people and the anathemas of the local cb-rgy.Crowds assemble around the Protestant meeting house and shout and create disturbances unchecked by the authorities.Upon one occasion a prominent lawyer of the city, who was among the crowd thus collected, was remonstrated with l>y a fellow-citizen and co-roligionlst for taking part in such demonstrations. This lawyer replied that it was for the honor of their town that the missionaries he driven away. For the sake of their children, who might be induced to listen to these apostates, it was necessary to force them out.Sunday after Sunday tho ministers In charge of tho work are denounced from the pulpit ot the Roman Catholic Church. The following is from Monday s issue of the \\Sorolois', tho only newspaper in the city of Morel.‘Yesterday from the pulpit the cure of Morel warned his hearers against the teachings ot the apostates whom Morel has the misfortune in count In its midst this last couple of months. These birds of prey who seek to destroy the faith of our children, spread throughout the town nn unhealthy literature, in which the church, the Roman Catholic religion, the priests, the confession, the Sacraments are insulted anil scorned and it Is time that nn end he put to all this.It is time that these miscreants cease Insulting everything that the population holds most dear.LET IS KICK OUT these detestable Impostors, these men without heart, who have denied the faith of their 'nihers.trampled under foot the promises of their baptism, and who flaunt their odious apostacy through the streets of the city, seeking to make victims, to wrest from the arms of the < hurch in order to throw into the arms of apostacy and Irréligion a youth Imbued with pure, and healthy Ideas imbibed at the knees of Christian fathers and mothers and in our houses of education.•The presence of these people in Sorel Is a scourge than the "Mouche des Cornes”, and it necessary to have Immediate recourse to the most energetto tneuns to rid tho population thereform.I.et al) those who have heart and energy give a hand to tills end.' NO POLICE PROTECTION.The missionaries also report that their garden is continual.y being raided and dospoilel, even the-lr potatoes are dug up and carlred away. They can get no tvlh f or protection.During the recent prosecution Mr.Gendreau was unable to secure tin* services of a single lawyer in the city of Sorel. One of tlies.• ujv*n being applied to said he could not take it as it would ruin his practice and that moreover lie would be useless to help him ns he was eon-vlotc I before he went to court at all.Notwithstanding the great dlltlcultios they have to contend with, the Rev.Mr.Cote and the Rev.Mr.Burwash report splendid meetings at their hall. The meeting hall Is packed to overflowing every Sunday evening.Fargo numbers are dot erred from attending owing to the denunciation of the local Roman Catholic clergy.A number of conversions are being made, anti the pastors express their determination to push forward the good work and hope yet to see their efforts crowned with great success.Be It remarked that there are no preachings or meetings outside of the missionary hall an r !•/ i «'.At Cow*n 5th Jnftant, tl.n vi>ic of t'ho».F, (iraret of a sou.VKI.l.B At C.'h»m*dy Kuln, on tlio 12th tintant, Hu* wifi* of hil'*.h(rp Well», of a dan(ht«r.Cot.MAN.At Ctiapiesu.Ont., ‘l inilRy, Angint 13.I* i.l, tin'wife of tleo.IV.Coluiati, of a «on.Both dulurf a till.V»«l>en paper* pleaur copy.OSWALB.At Kirerridi .l .-ilo K!tier*, on August 12th, 16.*3, Mrr.John Oswald, of a son.MAKK1ED.BE1B -JACK.At th* r.v.!»n e of the hrlde'l lather, Httlside, Chateaugag M»»:u.Que., on the lr>th Aug.i bg tha Rot.,I«t Boyd, Peter Reid, »'n of Wm.BiVI. II llraal, to Mery, daughter of Robert Jack, K Mtd'RTMMOV.At thn reeidenre | of the tuides fa'hcr.Mi l riinn.'n, Ont.i Oit Tue» | day, IMh August.1 U.' the Re* R.McLeod, Bougal!
