wee helJ on the 18th January instant, at the Office of the Society.O.RoBiTAtLtl, Esq., war called to the Chair. The Chairman stated the object** of this meeting, and the Srrret*ry-Ttreasurer wat requested to read the annual report of the Directors retiring, and the annual statement.Eighth Annual Report to the Share-holders op the Qiiieec Building Society. The Directors, on retiring from office, beg to Buhmit the eighth annual report of the tronsnctiona of the Society. The year which haajual expired is re-mtirkahle for the small number of aharea (14) which have been sold.Hosvrver, the total number of «hares baa been reduced from 1481 to 1287, making t diminution of 194, of which 102 were redeemed, 84 settled by composition, and 8 paid in full by Sheriff’s unies.Tln'se 1287 shares are now divided between 427 Shareholders, of whom 173 are lenders holding 427 shares, and 254 borrower» who still remain indebted for 860 share*.In consequence of the small number of shares disposed of, the Directors have, (beside* the share* redeemed, which amount to the round sum of £6,000) invested a further sum of £3,645 j„ th4 0f a C|,ar.tered Bank ofthia city, and in other public securities of the Province.A few hundred pound* have been lent on mortgage, in accordance with an amendment to the Act of Incorporation passed during the last Session of the legislature. It is with pleasure that the Director* have to observe a further diminution in the expenses of the year, and they hope that they will continue to decreaie progressively, as the Society approaches its termination. It is, however, with much regret that the Directors are under the painful neressity of reproaching the majority of the borrowers for the irregularity in their monthly payments, thereby increasing their debt more and more, in lien of diminishing the same as the Society approaches its end.The claim of the Society against the borrowers amounts at present to £3,631, forming about one-third of the ordinary annual income of the Institution, and which is alone for monthly payments.Of thla sum of i£3,63l above eteted, about £2,200 are included in judgmente obtained by the Society, It will therefore be easy to foresee that with such a heavy debt, which inereaseeyear after year, the Society cannot but materially •uffer, The Directora regret to express the fear they have entertained for some months back, that the exiatence of the Society will extend beyond the period of ten yeara, which until lately they had every reason to believe would not be the case. The cause, in their opinion, is owing to the defaulters generally, but more particularly to thoee who exceed six months in their monthly payments. From the above statements, the Directors, on retiring, think it their duty to recommend strongly to their successors in office, to take every necessary step in their power to wind up the affairs of the Society in as short delay os possible. And they do not hesitate to say that the success of the Society depends actually upon the more or less regular collection of the monthly payments and arrears generally.Although they regret to see such a large amount ol arrears, the Dirsctors, however, are happy to say that this sum, as well as the bttlance of capital due, are fully guaranteed by mortgages. On this point the Society has been so far very fortunate, having met with very few losses, which are more than covered by claims which have been paid in full, and, if at the present moment there ia a loss of ^£161 for the Society, accruing from the execution of some judgments, on the other hand there is a profit of £303 arising from other judgments which have been alio exaruted. The Directora cannot close the present Report without expressing their unanimous opinion ns to the very able, polite and attentive manner in which the affairs of the Society have been conducted by their Secretary-Treasurer, Mr.Vézina.1 lie whole humbly submitted, following portion of a letter, from an officer attacbed to Brigadier Grant's column, will ba lead with painful interest Cswrfobb, Oct.27, 1857.At daybreak a few of us started to look at tho , historical spots of Gawnpore.Ac our camp is at the northern (infantry) end of cantonment*, we passed the ebureh ; all tbo windows and doort mo torn out, the roof Is off, or rather down, amt the flooring torn up ; otherwise the building stands unhurt. The splendid theatre, on ono band, and the assembly rooms on the other, wo next pasted.Immediately on passing those, wo turned to our left, iu front of the assembly rooms, and io the second compound on our right band Ws saw a low tiled roofed bouse ; hero wo alight-•d aud went in ; the bouse la built round an open court-yard in the centre (in Pompeian style) ; io that court-yard stood a tree, now lying cut down ; it had aereed as gallows for ladies ; in every room of that bouse are etalns of blood on walls and floor, aud tba walls are riddled with pistol bullets. In the compound of tbo bouse stands a tree whose trunk is full of ballet boles sod gashed with sword cuts, and in the gashes is long hair ; io the compound is a well now filled up with earth: amongst lb* groir, between lb* home nnd welf, still are to be seen hair and torn scraps of clothing ; still a bat, « child’s iboe, a sock, Ae., can b* seen in tba room* of the boose. When tba first troopa come in ladies’ ba a aud bonnets and elotbiog fay in beapa about. The only redeeming sight in tbs com- Souod Is tbs " gallows” on which Neill bung the igh caste Brahmin sepoys whoso last momsuts be bad caused them to employ ia licking up tbo blood on (be floors of the rooms. No one can go into that massacre house and eome out without undying hatred in bis heart toward Nena Sahib, bis followers, and the race to wbieb they belong ; none of us could speak bis feelings; we all understand one another there. We rode on to the present entrenchment, « strong earthwork, with bastions at the corners and guns mounted ; it covers tbe magazine and the bridge of beets ; in it are tbe Poet office and Electric office ; its rear rests on ths river, its left ii protected by tbe leeks of the Ganges Canal. We then rode to tbs Artillery end of cantonments, la tbe Artillery Barracks w* found four companies of Highlanders just arrived—actual Highlanders, tbe gallant 93d, with broad shoulder*, thick bare calves, actual tartan kilte, and very long, very loose open kbakee jackets with red cuffs and collars. They say that tbe regiment is 1,029 stronp.and tho rest 00m* in to-morrow or next day.Hurrah for them I They are the boys for Lucknow. Then we rode to the old Dragoon Barracks ; and then again w* saw a sight to be remembered ! Just on tbe right bend side of the road, beyond tho 125th milestone from Allahabad, staud those two barracks ; aud if ad/ one were to giv* a true photograph of them, no one could perauade them that for twenty-two days those barrack* ware held by hardy soldiers ; and that tenderly reared English ladies could hare braved it out there would be Incredible.Tbe entrenchment one heard of-1 give a section—a child would rids his pony full gtllop over it, and not Know he has left tbe level plain ; that line round the barracks Is meant to snow tbe trench, the places where no trench esist* are the batteries ; there on the open, no trench, no parapet, to screen them, the guns were worked (eight 9 pounders, on* 24 pounder howitzer.) Barrack A has no roof, It was burned and fell In ; it is just like the Mcean Meer barracks, centra and verandah rooms in three long wards.I never saw buildings so riddled with ball, and not a fool of tho surface but is hit ; all the verandah* beaten down, a little bit stands to show the verandah.Every aide is equally smashed : on all sides the cowards poured shot on that little band whom they had not pluck to attack.About tbe floor lie memeutos, children’s clothes, socks, shoes, scraps of letters and paper1, music books.O.picked up Wheeler’s last pay certificate ; B.a book having on the title page the name of a lady be knew, and so on.Low down on one wall is tbe scar of a ball ; all round it the blood aud brains and hair nfroting Wheel'-r, who lying on tha floor woandrd^hls (liter kneeling over and fanning him, waa killed by tbi* ball.T., ona of the aurrirora, is beta now, and can point out every thing to ns Tba Chabootra of the well ii imashed to bit*, (bowing bow that he lees them.Ai we walked through those rooms we did not speak ; I, for one could not : I should bava sobbed with pity and rage—nearly all the latter, in attempting it : one felt inclined to vow one's life to revenge, to swear to kill so many a day of that cursed race, to tear all pity from one’s heart; it made one's heart stone and one’s brain rae ; I would not go again there for DR.HALSEY’S FOREST WINE, ratronized by the Nobility nnd Medical Faculty ol England, and esteemed the most extraordinary Medicine in the World.Medieitiet containing molasves or liquorice, like the hoastid Sarsaparilla», require many large bottles lo nroducc the slightest change io health. The FortH Wine is allogelher a different article. It contains the Syrup- to give it c r.si»tcncy, bul acquires its excellent flivor, and powerful medicinal properties Irom the vegetable plants nf which il is composed. The Fonat Wine combines the virtues nf the Wild Cherry, Dandelion, Yellow Dock, and Sarsaparilla ! with other valuable plants whose properties are still more effective. Its high concentration renders it one of the most efficient medicines now io use.Sometime» lets than a single bi-tllc restores the lingering patient from weakness, debility, and sickness, to strong and vigorous healih.Every dose shows its good effects on the constitution, and improves the slam of the health. The Forest Wine is recommended, in the strongest erms, for all complaints of the Ejp* Stomach, Liver, Kidneys, Nervous Disorders, Bilious Affections, Dropsy, Dyspepsia, Lois of Appetite, Jaundice, Female Complaint: Scrofula, nnd all disorders arising from impure habit of the system.SAVED FROM DEATH ! ! Testimony of Mr.Nathan Mathews, a imctnblc and wealthy citizen of Newark, N.J.: Dr.O.W.Halsey :—l believe your Forest Wine and I’ills have been the menna of saving my life When I commtnccd taking them I bid ut the point ol death, with Dropsy, Files and Asthma. My physicians had given me over os past cure, and my family had lost all hopes of my recovery. While in Ibis dreadful situation, your Forest Wine iiid Fills were nri'Ciired lor me, and before I had fioithed the first boti'c of the IA ine and box of Fill», I experienced great relief -, my body and liin>cc(orant, that opens and uuclogs the passage to the lungs, und thus, in a soothing manner, terforma its duly by throwing off phlegm, und other minor» from the lungs by copious spitting. The third is a Diuretic, which gives cu-c and double strength to the kidney* ; thus encouraged they draw large amounts nf impurity Irom the Mo.xl, which is then thrown out.Imuntiiully hy the uiiuary nr water passage, und which could not have been diicharged in any other way.The fourth is a Cailurtie, and accompanies the other properties of the Pills while engaged io purifying the blood ; the coarser particles of impurity which cannot pass by the other outlets, are thus taken up and conveyed olf in great quantities by the bowels. From th* above it is showc that Dr.Morse’s Indian Root Fills, not only enter tbe stomach, but become united with the blood, for Ihey find way to every part, and completely route out anil cleanse the system Irom all impurity, nnd the life of the body, which is the blood, becomes perfectly healthy, consequently all sickue*» and paiu is driven from th* system, for ihey cannot remain when the body becomes so pure and clear. The reason why people are so distressed when tick, and why so many die, it because they do not get a mepieiue which will pais lo the afflicted parts, and which will open tlie uatural passage* for the disease to lie east ont j hence, a large quantity of food and other matter is lodged; nod the stomach and bowels are literally overflowing with the corrupted mass ; thus undergoing disagreeable fermentation, constantly mixing with the blood, which throws the corrupted matter through every vein and artery, until life is taken from the body hy disease.Dr.Morse’s Pills have added to themselves victory upon victory, hy restoring millions nf the sick to blooming health nnd happiness.Yes, thousands who have boen racked or tormented with sickness, pain, anguish, and whose feeble frames hare been scorched by the burning element* of raging fever, and who bare been brought, as il were, within a step ofthe silent grave, now stand ready to testify bat they would have been numbered with tbe dead, had it not been for this great and wonderful medicine, Morse » Indian Hoot Pills. After one or two doses had been taken, they were astonished, and absolutely surprised, in witnessing their astonishing effects. Not only do they give immediate ease and strength, aud take away all sickuess, paiu and anguish, but they at once go lo work at tlie fiaimlatmu nf the disease, which is the blond. Therefore, it will be shown, especially by those who u»e these Fills, that disease— that deadly enemy—will lake itsfiigld, and the Bush of youth and beauty will again return, aud the prospect of a long aud happy life will cherish und brighten your
