The Quebec daily mercury

With all due del''fence to our eontenipo- 1 ray Cr Journal de Quebec, tve will again repeat that “ for all practical purpose* Montreal is stronger than Quebec.” Le tournai has fallen iuto some serious errors in its rc J view of our oomraents. We never gave it to he understood, for instance, that the fortifi-cations erected lor the doleoco of Montreal -irouiii ho excavueuti-d on tho north side ol the livi-r between the St.Lawrence and the city, and must certainly say that by so inferring our contemporary lias abuu hmly * proved that ho does' not understand the argument, or the tiist principles of the new system of defence which Ins relegated Quebec to a secondary rank as a fortress. The editor must not suppose that tho do-signers of the defences of this oily would bo so blind as to erect them within its immediate neighbourhood, and thereby expose the Victerii Bridge and Montreal to the shot ' and «hell of an enemy.By no means. If j Montreal is ever attacked and defended thu .8'rugglc for its pos-essiun will take place on ! the plain betwot-n this and St.Johns, at a [ vale distance for Montreal from the enemy's • cannon. The city itself would fall as soon as a hostile force could penetrate to tho river bank opposite, und bring its artillery to bust- upon it.The country they would lir.it have to paas over it wc will admit, as level as a billiard table, but nevertheless, we repeat, could soon be turue-J into a labyrinth of earthworks of greater importance und greater strength than the walls of Quebec, and so govern the contest for the pos»e.s-tan ol the city that it wuuld reduce itself to a mere question of 11 .ml and money.Tho editor ot the Journal, in addition to thu soiges we referred to, should also study thu h-sson conveyed by the successful attack by the Federal ilects on Forts St.Philip and Jackson, Pulaski and FLhcr during the recent war.The difference between stone forts sueh us they have at Quebec and the earthworks propo-ed to he erected in front of Montreal, would the ¦, perhaps, be somewhat more apparent to his undentanding. They went down like chaff before thu poundcriiig they were subjected to, whilu the c.irthwoik* ot Vicksburg, fiorinth and Richmond were never directly taken by assault, und would probably have been held to this day if the men and resources with whiuli thu South origiualiy defended them could luvc been kept up Napoleon once said that he fought and wou his battles with the leg-i and not witli the arms of his (-oldie:*, flic science uf tbe present day will soon cau-c it, in the same way, to be said that umpires are kept and won with the spado and not with the musket.Heporiul for the Daily Mercury.lti:i*OKT.|0 A.1|.UUKOPEAN NÜVV8.BY THE CABLE.LONDON, Jan.8.Report* from Hong Kong state that thu French II- ct iu the Corea i» about to leave tiioM.- water» for thu winter without being able to obtain adequate redress from Cochin ; China.MANCHESTER, Jan.8.Manuiuetuiiiig interests are dull ; orders limited.Middling Uplands 15 peace.LIVERPOOL, Jan.8, eve.Bn-udstulli rumaiu quiet.Cora quoted at t2i to 12s •>«!
