Let me tell you about Washington.Traffic through Washington is 24/7.And when we drove through it we were smack dab into one of the worst winter storms in U.S.history.Picture this: it\u2019s night time, a full blown snowstorm is in progress and I am jammed in tight lanes of traffic while big semi-trailer trucks squeeze me on both sides and dump sheets of icy slush on my windshield - so bad I can\u2019t see! This white knuckle driving - a nightmare vision of Armageddon- went on for hours and we couldn\u2019t get off the road, prisoners, seeing vehicles in distress all over the ditches.Thankfully, my nephew Stephan had loaned us his GPS on a stopover in southern New Hampshire and Adriana learned how to operate it in these panic circumstances, accessing the locations of some oasis-like motels in the area.Navigating the car was like steering a ship in a high Atlantic sea storm but we managed to find a motel in Washington.But no sooner had we got settled into our room than everything went black.Power outage.Eerie silence.A creepy spookiness.After a cool night bundled up in our day clothes under the blankets, we woke to a continued outage, but drove away scampering southward to safety.Once you get past the Great Urban Mess and into Virginia what a radical change! The weather is milder, the people sweeter, the accents drawled out.The hiss of winter winds softens to the sweet song of morning birds.Too many things happened on this odyssey southbound to cram into one all-too-short column.Curiously, on coming home, the sight of mounds of snow, the bone-chilling temperature, the greyness of a lingering winter do not depress me.The sharp winds of Canada, biting, fresh, are like a \u201cWelcome Back\u201d slap in the face!
