fact, a HUGE story, with multiple layers. There is much to move you within its 217 pages.Homes tells the story of the Al Rabeeah family—an Iraqi family of 10 (two parents, five daughters and three sons)—who, because of persecution in Iraq, move to the city of Homs, in northern Syria and then eventually to Edmonton, Canada, as refugees. The title, Homes, is a clever play on words.‘Homs’ is pronounced ‘homes’, and at the heart of the book is the question: What is home? What is ‘home’ to a displaced family that must leave everything behind multiple times? What is home, when you are a teenage boy growing up in the chaos of war? What is home, when you must leave everything familiar, and come to a new land, a new culture, and a new language? The story of the Al Rabeeah family is told from the perspective of Abu Bakr, the second of the three sons.Bakr, as he is known, tells how his family, because of persecution in Iraq (they were Sunni Muslims in a predominantly Shiite Muslim world) flees to Syria—to settle in Homs—when he is nine, in December of 2010.By March of 2011, when Bakr has turned 10, the people of Syria begin peaceful demonstrations calling for national unity and democracy, and by April of 2011, the Syrian government begins to respond with increasing violence. The steady descent into vicious civil war— first, with what seemed like random, one-off incidents of government snipers shooting at people leaving mosques on Friday afternoons, to focused, deliberate and wider-spread raids of the areas of Homs in which demonstrators lived—is told through the eyes of this young boy.We hear about the suffering: how Bakr, his parents and siblings, and other regular Muslims, were caught in the middle of the war.We in Canada received reports of what was happening in Syria, and it quickly became difficult for us to understand who was fighting whom. What this book makes clear is that this was not apparent for the people on the ground, either.“When the grenades exploded or machine guns rattled, you never knew if the attack was coming from the government or the anti-government militias that fought to control the streets of Homs” (p.19).It was utter chaos, and Bakr, and his family, were caught in the middle. We hear of how Bakr lived through the turmoil of war, and how they became used to it.“After three years of living in civil war, we had become strangely numb to the random violence that bubbled up around us” (pp.19-20).Bakr talks about how he and his friends would get mops and buckets to rid the streets of pieces of human flesh and bone stuck to the sidewalks; how he buried a man’s jaw, found on the roof of his family’s chicken coop. Not usual activities for a 13-year-old boy, but, activities that, out of necessity, he and his friends became accustomed to doing. He tells how he learned to fall asleep, to what he calls the “strange lullaby” of the “singing” sniper rifles, the “chorus of machine guns,” and “the soprano screech and baritone tremor of the mortars” (pp.62-63).How resilient we humans can be.That’s one of the many ways this book will move you.But Bakr also tells about how he and his cousins made games out of used bullet shells, how they played soccer in makeshift fields—sometimes having to stop playing and seek shelter when gunshots flew—and how, in Damascus, one of his cousins suggested they make kites out of scraps of rice bags and twigs—a suggestion that embarrassed Bakr, since flying a kite was for younger children, not for 12-year-old boys, and certainly not with the makeshift items used. But, because he and his cousins were bored out of their minds (they were not in school, and so had to find some way to pass the time), he agreed and spent many happy hours flying his kite over the city of Damascus. The teenage years are difficult enough without the challenges that Bakr faced. You will be moved by the manner in which this young man matures in the four years covered in this book.In December of 2014, the Al Rabeeahs arrive in Edmonton as refugees. The final chapters of Homes describe the re- lief—but also the loneliness, the “islands of grief”—that each member of the family experiences as they try to learn English and find their way in Canada. The words of Bakr’s father anchor the family: “Life must always go on, Bakr.Death doesn’t matter.Money doesn’t matter. What matters is living your life with your family, with the people you love. What we face, we face together” (p.44).Wherever loved ones are, is home.It is Winnie Yeung, one of Bakr’s high school ESL teachers—and a first-genera- tion Canadian herself—who connects with Bakr and slowly (since his English is not strong) hears his incredible story.Trust develops between the two, and Winnie begins to write down the story of this family. And so Homes came to be.Together, Yeung and Al Rabeeah have written this story so that other Canadians can know it.So they can be moved and inspired by it.You will be.This week's review, by Michele Murray, is taken from her presentation at the recent Lennoxville Library Canada Reads event.Ben by Daniel Shelton Page 2 Friday , April 19, 2019 improved this year.In accordance with a decision made by city council on Monday, Hydro-Sherbrooke will maximize the use of the available envelope of $500,000 in 2019 to improve lighting on approximately 38 km of streets.Hydro-Sherbrooke has conducted an inventory of street lighting in order to identify the sectors that do not comply with its policy.According to this analysis, 100 km of streets require upgrading while 609 km of streets are adequately lit.To bring all streets up to standard, it would cost $8.5 million. When the electrical grid is already on the street, the only work required is adding lighting fixtures in existing poles to bring the lighting up to standard, which costs about $10,000 per kilometer. This cost increases to $130,000 per kilometer when the power grid is behind properties since underground conduits and streetlights must be put in place.Problem areas will be upgraded as a priority, which will improve the lighting of 38 km of streets using only six per cent of the total budget required."Upgrading lighting throughout the streets will be a long-term task and this decision shows that we have the safety of the public at heart," said Sherbrooke Mayor Steve Lussier.Friday , April 19, 2019 Page 3 "These two founders of the Canadian Organ Donation Association are a source of pride for the City,” commented Sherbrooke Mayor Steve patients By Emilie Hackett Special to the Record CIUSSS de l’Estrie-CHUS is now offering a new rehabilitation program for its patients in the intensive care unit (ICU).A first in Quebec, patients who are bed-ridden or who are in a coma have access to the ergocy- cle, a mechanical exercise bicycle adapted for hospital beds. This innovative research project could help reduce muscular weakness caused by prolonged immobilization that is often seen in ICU patients and could also stimulate quicker recovery time.Conducted by Dr.Frédérick D’Aragon, an anesthesiologist and intensivist at the CHUS-Fleurimont, the study is already seeing results with five ICU patients at the hospital. So far, the ergocycle has been shown to improve physical and functional results: patients can get out of bed up to five days earlier and their hospital stay is shorter by two full days. The CHUS-Fleurimont is the hospital in Quebec to own an ergocycle and to participate in this international research project conducted over four years.“Muscular weakness is common within ICU patients and it starts in the first six hours of artificial respiration,” explained D’Aragon.“It is associated to an increase in mortality, morbidity and the costs of health services.Along with muscular atrophy, it will occur quickly, and legs are the most sensitive to immobility.Using the ergocycle in bed is a promising intervention because the patient can be quickly mobilised, safely, even if they are in an artificially-induced coma.” “When leaving the ICU, many patients display significant weaknesses that require follow-up action with the rehabilitation team for them to regain their basic abilities, such as moving around or resuming their previous habits and activities,” remarked Christine Lafond, a physiotherapist at the CHUS.“We will take any patient who volunteers and is cleared by the medical team. This ensures a generalized result for our research,” added D’Aragon.“The session will last 30 minutes every day for five days in a row, up until the patient leaves the ICU or is able to walk on their own for two days in a row.” “The machine is always supervised by one of the health staff members, but we do not necessarily need the collaboration of our patients,” he mentioned, noting that they obtain consent from patients before they are put under artificial respiration.“It is a significant asset for the ICU because as we know, our patients are often in a coma due to the severity of their situation and their treatments.” Yvon Roy is an ICU patient participating in the Ergocycle research project.“I agreed to cycle in bed because I had seen a similar machine in a news report on television.I thought it was a good idea. For the patient, it’s good to be able to move in bed.Since they cannot exercise, the machine allows them to be active. If they don’t have the strength to pedal on their own, the machine will help,” he said.“I liked cycling in bed.It wasn’t overtiring. The nurses congratulated me, and they told me I pedaled a lot.I performed well even if I wasn’t as awake.I want to do physical exercise that will help me feel better.I recommend it to others because it helps people.” “It’s a research project that will help my father walk again easier. He will be able to recuperate faster, because with the care he currently needs he will be less mobile for a while,” observed Isabelle Roy, Yvon Roy’s daughter and caregiver.Overall, over 3,000 patients were admitted into the ICU in Sherbrooke in 2017 and 2018.The ergocycle could help patients regain their mobility and their autonomy faster and reduce their ICU stay. While it is used on top of physical therapy and rehabilitation, the ergocy- cle is already offering promising results.CONT’D FROM PAGE 1 J.Michel Doyon, Lieutenant-Governor of Quebec, at Police arrest suspected drug dealer Record Staff Thursday morning at 6a.m.a raid was carried out in a residence on rue Principale Est in Magog. The home had been designated as a cannabis sales and drug trafficking outlet.According to the information gathered, the occupant of the dwelling engaged in the sale of cannabis, and narcotics to minors and young adults. Two search warrants were obtained for the search, making it possible to seize both cannabis and cocaine. The suspect, a 19-year-old Magog resident, was arrested and taken to the Memphremagog Police Station for questioning. The operation was carried out by the Access-Cannabis group of the Mem- phremagog police, the Sherbrooke Police Service and with the assistance of the Sherbrooke police intervention group.Helping children grow up healthy Record Staff According to the Estrie Department of Public Health, nearly 30 per cent of children who enter kindergarten are behind in at least one sphere of their development.About 40 per cent of those living in disadvantaged neighborhoods are similarly late. The recent data, coming from the Quebec Survey of Children's Development in Kindergarten, and has led researchers from the CIUSSS de l’Estrie - CHUS to develop a project to identify children at risk of developmental delay in early childhood.Project P-POP 2-5: to detect children at risk of developmental delay A team led by Chantal Camden and Mélanie Couture, professor-researchers in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at the Université de Sherbrooke and at the CHUS Research Center, set up a project Population portrait of the development of children from 2 to 5 years old, which hopes to document the development of children in Sherbrooke to build a portrait for the area.It also aims to identify children with challenges in one of the following developmental spheres: • Physical health and well-being (health, fine and gross motor skills); Social skills (empathy, sharing, and caring); Emotional maturity (emotion management and self-control); Cognitive and language development (reasoning ability and language); Communication skills and general knowledge.A questionnaire completed by parents helps to identify children at risk of developmental delay. If the child is found to be at risk, parents will be invited to meet with a health professional to confirm the screening and be referred to the relevant resources. This research project helps to better meet the needs of children by guiding them to appropriate services as early as possible. It also builds partnerships between researchers, health professionals, and the community to explore the development of services that better meet the needs of families. The researchers encourage all parents in the city of Sherbrooke and its boroughs to complete the questionnaire found at https://secure.cred.ca/redcap/surveys/?s= M8TXLL9YDF.SQ eyeing the roads on Easter weekend Record Staff Patrol officers from the Sûreté du Québec will intensify while driving and driving impaired by alcohol or drugs or a combination of both During this time last year, the police arrested more than 80 people for impaired driving.During the same period, more than 500 collisions occurred in the territory served by the Sûreté du Québec last year.More than 100 people were injured and three died.According to the SQ, The root cause of collisions is the person Mont-Or- ford announced, on Wednesday, their plans for an investment of more than $11 million into the Mont Or- ford Ski Resort over the course of the coming year.Meant as a way to help the space become a year-round attraction, the work is set to be carried out between May 6 and November 1 of 2019.Pascal Mongeau, General Manager of the corporation, broke the work down into three main components. Most noticeable at first glance, the project will involve the construction of a large new annex to the resort’s chalet, which will help move all services into one structure.“We wanted to create an improved and user-friendly customer experience,” the general manager said, describing the future chalet as a kind of one-stop-shop for visitors’ needs while pointing out that the design was planned in such a way as to integrate into the existing structure and keep the mountain as the main attraction.Included in the $6.4 million budget for the chalet work is the second component, a newly redesigned and expanded outdoor event space aimed at improving services year round to the various groups and festivals that use the mountain.“With a stage for live shows, as well as more space for visitors and a natural amphitheater, (the outdoor space) will be able to accommodate more than 500 people," Mongeau said, sharing a vision that the mountain will become a cultural and community gathering point for the people of the Memphremagog MRC.The third component is the continued expansion of Orford’s snowmaking ability to the Alfred-Desrochers slope, to help improve the skiing experience for those who come to use the mountain, regardless of what weather patterns future winters might bring.“There is room to grow,” said Jacques Demers, President of the corporation and Prefect of the Memphremagog MRC, clarifying that he was referring to usage of the site, and not to condo development or significant changes to trail layout any time in the near future.Because of the large amount of work needed to be done and the location of the construction projects involved, only the eastern side of Mont Giroux will be accessible to hikers over the summer except for during special events.A path to the chalet and customer service counter will be made available from the P2 parking lot on weekdays only.“The work taking place at the station is of a very large scale and we want to take the necessary steps to ensure the safety of visitors and those working,” Mongeau said. The corporation plans to post updates on the progress of the work on its website and social media pages over the course of the coming year.Easter activities at Sherbrooke museum Record Staff For the Easter weekend, the Sherbrooke Museum of Fine Arts is holding several in Alberta. There were many objectionable components to the UCP campaign. One of the most ominous was Kenney’s promise to fight for the continued subsidization of Alberta’s dying fossil fuel industry.Of course, Kenney didn’t phrase it that way.He promised to eliminate the carbon price tax implemented by Rachel Not- ley’s NDP government. In fact, he pledged to Alberta voters it would be gone before the start of this summer’s Calgary Stampede. When Kenney eliminates the Notley government’s carbon tax, Alberta will then be subject to the federal carbon pricing plan.Conservatives unite Kenney’s promise to fight the federal carbon tax aligns him with fellow premiers Doug Ford of Ontario, Blaine Higgs of New Brunswick and Scott Moe of Saskatchewan, as well as federal Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer.Screenshot of a mass text message from federal Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer and the author’s message in return.Scheer never responded.Scheer and his provincial counterparts, the most vocal opponents of Canada’s putting a price on carbon, are self-professed lovers of the free market. The Wall Street Journal recently cited Kenney’s expected victory as evidence of Albertans’ support for free markets.Scheer, Kenney, Ford, Higgs and Moe are individualists who believe the market properly rewards hard work. They claim to want minimal government, especially in all things economic.According to free market ideology, government action prevents markets from functioning optimally.Among the biggest targets of the ideology are subsidies.According to free market supporters, subsidies distort prices, sending buyers and sellers the wrong signals, producing inefficiencies. And yet, in the denunciation of carbon taxes, opponents are really demanding the maintenance of a subsidy.Although the federal government is imposing a cost on emissions through a tax, it is properly thought of as a price.Currently, we freely dispose of carbon and other emissions when we burn fossil fuels.A carbon tax puts a price on those emissions. In theory, it makes us cover the costs associated with emissions and alters our behaviour toward consumption with lower emissions.Markets are implicated in the climate crisis For millennia, humans have burned fossil fuels for energy. However, over the last two centuries, the scale of fossil fuel use has increased dramatically.A commensurate rise in emissions has resulted.Remarkably early in this history, there were scientists suggesting this is a problem. The Swedish Nobel laureate Svante Arrhenius argued in 1896 that carbon dioxide accumulation in the atmosphere could alter the Earth’s climate. There is now effectively a scientific consensus that carbon and other emissions are dramatically altering our climate with a cascade of detrimental effects.Fossil fuels offered a cheap, abundant and concentrated source of energy. However, cheapness was an illusion.Fossil fuel use was being subsidised by others.Because the climate is global, the effects of climate change impose costs on people far removed in space from where the fossil fuels were burned.Because the effects of emissions take a while to emerge, they are imposing costs on people far removed in time from when the fossil fuels were burned. One of the central ideological tenets of markets is that the beneficiary of a good also bears the cost of that good.Markets hide subsidy Every time we burn fossil fuels — whether to heat our homes or power our vehicles — and we do not pay to deal with the emissions, we are subsidized by those distributed in space and time who will pay in one way or another.Markets hid the subsidy with the low price paid for fossil fuels. Most opponents of the carbon tax have accepted the science behind climate change, if grudgingly. Most even accept that it is caused by humans.Yet they refuse to recognize that markets are implicated in the crisis.A carbon tax, as currently implemented by the federal government, is a bare minimum for addressing the climate crisis. The tax will have disproportionate effects on poor people and rural citizens. However, these should be addressed, as necessary, with targeted subsidies.Explicit subsidies, on the books and subject to critical evaluation, are preferable to the clandestine subsidies to which carbon tax opponents feel entitled.EDITORIAL Page 6 Friday , April 19, 2019 newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com The Record There is now effectively a scientific consensus that carbon and other emissions are dramatically altering our climate with a cascade of detrimental effects. It's over QESBA ; Give Up LETTER TO THE EDITOR The article: "Bishop's hosts public consultation on Official Languages Act " (Record, April 18) reports that "representatives from groups and organizations across the province were able to voice their concerns both on and off the topic of the day." Considering the consultation dealt with language matters, it would be difficult to imagine the fear-mongering Quebec English School Boards Association (QESBA) not being there, and singing the usual blues about minority-language education rights. That said, recently I wrote again to Mélanie Joly, Canada's Minister of Tourism, Official Languages, and La Francophonie, who was present at the forum. The subject was the QESBA and its playing the language card.I repeated these points: The QESBA does not represent the Anglophone community of Quebec. It is a self-serving association, which has been of no pedagogical, cultural or economical value to any Quebec English school, classroom or student. It is constantly seeking relevance by requesting funds to challenge any government voted in by millions, whether it's the PQ, QLP or the CAQ, who are all Friday , April 19, 2019 Page 7 The Record newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com One column, four voices Open to the Spirit Today’s word: Ecology By Revs Mead Baldwin, W.Lynn Dillabough, Lee Ann Hogle, and Carole Martignacco 1) This day is what Christians ironically call Good Friday.Across the world we remember how one man was put to death because he dared to remind us of the absolute necessity to care for one another as much as we care for ourselves. It seems a fitting time to reflect on our common home, this beautiful blue planet and the imminent peril it has been placed in due to human activity. As we witness the accelerating extinction of species, can we imagine that we will somehow escape their fate?Or are we collectively heading for our own Good Friday? In my most hopeful moments I think that we must indeed die to many of the attitudes and practices we have adopted if we are to have a hope of surviving. The time for self-centred preoccupations is past.We must begin to care as much for the birds of the air, the fish in the sea and the trees in the forest as we do for our Netflix subscription, our cellphone plan and where we will go on vacation this year.We must begin to care about the loss of religious freedoms in Quebec and the crisis of health care of Aboriginal children in Canada as much as we care about English schools in this province.Across this country and around the world, we are all interconnected - plants, animals and the human species.Collectively we are the ecology. There is no humanity separate from this living, breathing world. This is our wake up call.We are being asked to place the common good at the centre of our lives.Let the old ways die.Suffer through the signs of withdrawal to self-centred addictions.Hold out hope for a day of resurrection when every living thing on this planet has an equal opportunity to celebrate the gift of life we have each received.Let us find a resurrection service to attend this Sunday, so we can commit ourselves to one another and this planet.Let us do this for the sake of our children and our children’s children.May it be so.2) Monday is Earth Day and our word this week is ecology.Once again we will ring our church bell 365 times as a sign of our commitment to the planet. The kids don't have school that day and those who join me will get Easter eggs for treats this year.Their presence reminds me that children seem to care about our environment more than most of the adults these days.We use the word ecology a lot but I wonder sometimes if we know what it means.Perhaps I don't know either.I looked up the meaning and one phrase stood out for me; “the relationship between organisms and their environment”.Our environment on earth is going through major changes with global warming.Science has undis- putable evidence to prove this.We need to change our ways or all organisms are at risk.I am not a scientist.I do know, however, that the social environment of our families and community makes a huge difference to the human development of the children we cherish. One issue in the election in Alberta this week was a fight over a federal carbon tax.The political environment in this country now has created a climate of hatred as many provinces see the federal government as the enemy. The name calling and blaming turns people who we disagree with into horrible enemies. The more we fight, the less we actually do to save the planet. The word ecology means our relationship to our environment.Unfortunately if we want to change our physical environment, we first need to change our political environment.I have no solution, but the children and I will ring the church bells on Earth Day with hope in our hearts.3) Ecology is all about relationships.Just like all of our indigenous spiritual leaders have been saying for millennia, we all related: the people, the sky, the water and air, the rocks and the trees. We depend on each other. At a recent study group we discussed the different parts of the meal that we had just enjoyed together. We started with the natural processes that were at work, things that humans could not do.We reflected on the soil, the sunlight, the water. Some of these things we can manipulate, but we cannot create any of them. Then we thought about the food that came from nearby (the maple syrup, eggs, cream) and the foods that came from far away (the coffee, chocolate and bananas) and all of the human processes involved in getting the meal to our table. We were impressed with human ingenuity but also humbled and embarrassed when we thought about the destruction that was involved in our being fed.We brainstormed ways to live in greater harmony with the environment around us – buying local, growing our own, saving things like strawberries for times when they are in season.Maybe you are eating while you read this, or maybe you can remember your last meal.Where did it come from and how are you part of the ecology around you?As we approach Earth Day, we are full of gratitude for this amazing planet. We are glad to be a part of it and we are glad to do our part to keep it healthy and beautiful.4) Easter and Earth Day side by side this year! How shall we celebrate? The one has themes of awakening and resurrection, life conquers death, the whole story of Holy Week is that salvation is at hand. The other calls us to wake up and save ourselves before it's too late. Both deal with death and rebirth, with suffering and the potential for renewal.Back in the 80s, religious education colleagues and I discovered a passion for something called Deep Ecology. If ecology teaches the awareness of our inter- relatedness with all of nature, Deep Ecology was the environmental version of depth psychology. We used the tools of religion - symbolism, ritual, story, song, meditation and prayer - to explore our grief at the loss of ecosystems, to deepen our appreciation and integral connection with all of nature, and celebrate the unique place of the human within the entire Earth community. We drew inspiration from pagan and indigenous writers, nature poets and Buddhist environmental activist Joanna Macy's The Work That Reconnects. We saw signs humanity was on the verge of a great awakening or consciousness shift, ready to invent a new way of being sustainably human on the earth.I recall reading of the death of oceans within a few decades - outraged that it was relegated to page 10 in the newspaper. Now it is indeed front-page "breaking" news. What if the whole most urgent spiritual need of the 21st century is to awaken to our present relationship to nature and begin reparations. To emerge from all the myths, legends, traditions, stories and metaphors of the past, ready to create our own giving new life to our understanding of who we are and why we are here.Happy Easter Earth day to us all! One word, four voices -now it's your turn: What comes to your mind with this word ecology?Rev.Mead Baldwin pastors the Waterville & North Hatley pastoral charge; Rev.Lynn Dillabough is now Rector of Thanks to the federal New Horizons for Seniors program, the Cercle des fermières d'Asbestos received $ 21,464 for the restoration of a loom and sewing machines, among other things."This will ensure the sustainability of our organization,” said Cercle des Fermiers President Johann Blanchard.“We are very happy with this financial support.” The organization has more than 60 active members.Representatives from the Cercle, along with Richmond-Arthabaska MP Alain Rayes, Asbestos Mayor Hugues Gri- mard, and Political Attaché Bruno Va- chon officially inaugurated the Cercle’s new facilities earlier this week."The New Horizons for Seniors Program is helping to revitalize our communities and promote intergenerational relationships. Each year, several projects are selected in annual craft show on April 26 and 27.The members are also inviting the public to their annual fair on May 11 at Notre-Dame-De-Toutes-Joies Church on Lafrance St. Local country music singer/bass player Carroll Sayers has been walking in his dad’s footsteps (the late Francis “Buck” Sayers) for a while, but honestly, he can stand on his own when it comes to music.Caroll Sayers was born in Sherbrooke, in February 1973 on a very cold day, but turned out to be a warm and friendly man with a bubbly personality and a great sense of humor.Buck Sayers played a major role in his children’s life by sharing his love of music.“My father was the first musician in our family; he was self-taught.I also have an older brother Randy, who became a very accomplished lead guitar player. He lives in Kitchener, Ontario and has his own country band called Rural Appetite. My sister Shelley plays the organ and my mother Ellen Rever used to play drums.I do believe she played with my dad a time or two,” he explained about his musical family. When he was about 7 years old, he wanted to learn how to play fiddle.A few days later, his dad introduced him to Larry Davis, who started giving him lessons.Sayers played fiddle for a few years but he had a different calling.“I knew I had the bug, I wanted to become a musician just like my dad.I wanted to perform on stage, to make people happy and watch them have a grand ol’ time dancing, and laughing, being able to play special requests for them if asked,” said the entertainer. When he was twelve years old and living in Ontario, his father came home one night from work and said that he had booked a gig at the Elora Legion the following Saturday night. But he was missing a bass player and he wanted his son to play bass.“I said dad I've never played bass before, he said don't worry about it son, here's a bass guitar, just follow me.He showed me a G chord, a C chord and D chord.I said OK and away we went, I played my first gig with my dad, my brother and uncle Donnie Sayers on drums.” This was not the easiest way to become a musician but it worked fine for this multi-instrumentalist.“I've been playing music for 35 years now and counting.Since then, I've learned how to play piano, drums, banjo, mandolin, harmonica, dobro, and now I'm starting to learn pedal steel guitar,” he added.Music brought Sayers a lot of experiences and many opportunities came knocking at his door.He has always been a very determined person and it served him right on many occasions.“About 23 years ago, I got an opportunity, a chance of a lifetime. At the time I was living with my brother in Ontario and dad called me to let me know a man was trying to reach me.” It turned out to be Danny Goodsell, one of his old friend from the Eastern Township's who lived in London, Ontario. He was the guitarist for the well- known singer Bradley J.Preston.They were looking for a bass player.“I was given two days to learn 80 songs, I did my best to learn them and two days later, I was doing my audition in a studio in Sarnia, Ontario.I was very nervous but I did it.Bradley gave me the job and we toured Canada for about a year.It was awesome,” recalled Sayers.“I had the best time of my life.We played one gig in Chatham, Ontario and so far I think it was the highlight of my musical career. We opened up for the well-known band Blue Rodeo. What a pleasure, what an experience this was,” he stressed.Sayers loves country music, a musical genre that was always part of his life but he also loves Led Zeppelin and has a lot of admiration for John Paul Jones (on bass).Jones is his idol and he hopes one day, he can have his dexterity. He has also written a few songs but time is missing to really pursue this avenue. Two songs are completed “Blue Eyed Girl” and “You Were There.” Another one of his passions is cooking, he just loves it.“Almost every night, we have a sit down home-cooked meal.Nothing beats that.We also all love riding motocross.Me, my wife Colleen Smith, as well as the kids, we love fishing, hiking and taking long walks.” Indeed Sayers is the father of twins, a boy, Collins and a girl, Hailey, 15 and both of them have music in their DNA.Collins is becoming a drummer while Hailey takes after her father and plays bass. Both of them had the privilege to play on stage with their grandfather Buck.He was very proud of them, but if you asked him how they did, he would say not bad but you need to practice.“My father was a great musician and one of the easiest, kindest people you would ever meet.I am proud to say he was my mentor,” said the singer with a lot of emotion, remembering the man who was his father.TALK The Record Your Weekly Guide to Townships Culture April 19 - April 25, 2019 Country Connection Jessie Pelletier Aulis 184 Queen Street, Sherbrooke (downtown Born in Sawyerville, Quebec, on October 1, 1939, Burt was raised on a farm with no electricity. With his father a farmer and mother a teacher, he developed a physical and intellectual work ethic that facilitated a 40 year career at the Bank of Montreal. He eventually rose to the executive ranks, but his proudest achievements came through his recognition of being a Champion of the People. In retirement, he volunteered in various functions including the Wales Home Foundation, Lennoxville Community Aid Foundation, Sawyerville Royal Canadian Legion, the Lennoxville Curling Club and both the Progressive Conservative and Liberal Party of Canada. He continued to read variously, write extensively about WWI and the contributions and eventual sacrifice of his uncle George Thompson. He also carved wooden duck decoys, make maple syrup, worked on the farm and traveled the world.Burt will miss spending time with all of his friends, the entire McConnell clan especially his brother Raymond and his wife Donna, Chester and his wife Barbara and all of their respective families. His daughter Joanne Peach and her husband Brian Peach, his son Grant McConnell and his wife Rosemarie Pilon. As his health started to fail, it was the achievements of his grandchildren that inspired him to keep fighting: Malcolm and Erin Peach, Mathieu Zerter, Kurtis, Lindsey & Sara McConnell and great-grandchildren Sophie Zerter, Scout and Waylon McConnell.Lastly, Burt will spend his eternity with his lifelong love Betty McConnell. Betty has been suffering for years with Alzheimer’s disease. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada would be appreciated. https://alzheimer.ca/en/Home/Get-involved/Ways-to-donate Visitation will take place at the Cass Funeral Home, 3006 College Street, Sherbrooke, (Lennoxville) Quebec on Saturday, April 20, 2019 from 11:30 a.m.to 1:30 p.m.CASS FUNERAL HOMES PHONE: 819-564-1750 3006 College St., Sherbrooke QC FAX: 819-564-4423 www.casshomes.ca Kenneth Albert CAMPBELL (1937-2019) Born at home in Scotstown, QC, to Dannie and Annie on April 28, 1937, Kenneth Albert Campbell passed away peacefully at the Ottawa Civic Hospital the morning of April 12 with family at his side after a nine-month struggle that he managed with tremendous grace and will.A lifelong fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs, Dad cheered 10 Leafs Stanley Cup wins.though none recently! Annie: My three siblings and I are in a terrible situation right now over our 88-year-old mother. When she first moved into her seniors residence almost a year ago, one of the papers that we were asked to fill out was a DNR (Do Not Resuscitate) form.We didn’t think it was a good time to talk to our mom about it because she was going through a lot at the time, and we didn’t want to upset her further. We couldn’t agree about what to put on the form (it was a two-two tie).Since my brother is named as her “power of attorney” in case of incapacity, even though our mom wasn’t incapacitated, we agreed to let him decide. So, it was indicated on the form to give CPR if necessary (so, no DNR order).Fast-forward to a month ago when we decided to have the residence physician take her on as her patient.I went with her on her assessment visit. The head nurse was present, who knows my mother well. There was some mild cognitive impairment, but my mother was quite lucid and understood his questions. The DNR was discussed with my mother. She told him that she didn’t want them to try to bring her back to life if her heart stopped. She signed the DNR form herself.I sent an email to my siblings summarizing the visit, mentioning my mother’s decision to have a DNR on her file.I did not see what was coming next.My brother accused me of going behind everyone’s back to change the order in her file to what I “wanted.” He said that I should have not allowed for the change to happen, that I should have said to the doctor that we needed to discuss it as a family before changing it.He was furious with the doctor for deciding that our mother was able to make the decision on her own after an hour of meeting her.My brother went to visit my mom the next weekend (he lives out of town) and asked her if she enjoyed her life and wanted to continue living. When she said “yes,” he decided that was good enough for him, and he changed the form in her file, asking for CPR (indicating in capital letters, “My mother wants to live!!” on the form). My brothers think that only people whose life has no value (no quality of life, no enjoyment) should have a DNR.They believe that if there is a chance of a reasonable quality of life, no matter how small, it is worth risking the negative consequences of CPR.My sister and I think that signing a DNR order prevents unnecessary suffering at the end of life — real CPR is not like on TV and would cause physical injuries — and that current quality of life has nothing to do with it.Now my brothers think that my sister and I don’t think my mother’s life has value, which is really hurtful. We are so far apart on this issue. It has caused a lot of anger and mistrust.I’m not sure how we can come together again as a family.— Saddened Siblings Dear Siblings: As a family, and for your mother’s sake, you should come together on this issue. You said that your mother had mild cognitive impairment when she signed the new document. To ensure that all documents are in her best interest, allow your brother, as her power of attorney, to continue to be the point of contact for your mother’s DNR.The most important thing you can do for your mom’s golden years is to have her children get along. So try to make amends with your brothers.“Ask Me Anything: A Year of Advice From Dear Annie” is out now! Over East’s one-spade intervention, South was a tad heavy for one no-trump and a tad light for two no-trump.He permitted his lack of a second spade stopper to persuade him to take the low road — which was lucky given that one no- trump was too high! South did well to duck the first trick. The original East cashed the spade ace and played a third spade. Then, though, after declarer drove out the club ace, West was not sure whether to shift to hearts or diamonds. When he mis- guessed, declarer took one spade, four diamonds and three clubs for an over- trick.Yes, East had led the spade queen at trick three, intending it as a suit-prefer- ence signal for hearts, but he should have told his story more plainly by cashing the heart king at trick two or trick three — king from ace-king after trick one. Then West would have been in the know.
