and the fame was read by the Lord Chancellor, and is as follows : GEORGE R.1S Majefty having been informed, by order of the French King, that a Treaty of Amity and Commerce has been figned between the Court of France and certain perfons employed by -his Majefty\u2019s revolted Subjeéts in North America, has judged it neceffary to direét, that a copy of the Declaration delivered by the French Ambafflador to Lord Vifcount Weymouth, be laid before the Houfe of Lords; and at the fame time to acquaint them, that his Majefty has thought proper, in confequence of this offenfive communication on the part of the Court of France, to fend orders to his Ambaflador to withdraw from that Court.His Majefty is perfuaded, that the juftice and good faith of his condué towards foreign powers, and the fincerity of his wifhes to preferve the tranquillity of Europe, will be acknowledged by all the world ; and his Majefty trufts, that he fhall not ftand refponfiblé for the difturbance of that tranquillity if he fhould find him£elf called upon to refent fo unprovoked and fo unjuft an aggreffion on the honour of his Crown and the cflential interefts of his Kingdoms, contrary to the moft folemn affurances, fubverfive of the Law of Nations, and injurious to the rights of every Sovereign Power in Europe.His Majefty, relying with the firmeft confidence on the zcalous and affectionate fupport of his faithful People, is determined to be prepared to exert, if it fhall become neceflary, all the force and refources of all his Kingdèms, which he trufts will be found adequate to repel every infult and attack, and to maintain and uphold the power and reputation of this Country.G.R.This being read, Lord IV eymouth delivered the following declaration, which be bad on Friday reccived from the French AmbafJador.HE underfigned Ambaflador of his moft Chriftian Majefty has received exprefs orders to make the following declaration to the Court of London: The United States of North-America, who are in full poffeton of independence, as pronounced by them on the 4th of July, 1776, having propofed to the King, to confolidate by a formal convention the connection begun to be eftablifhed between the two nations, the refpeétive Plenipotentiaries have figned a treaty of friendfhip and commerce, defigned to ferve as a foundation for their mutual ood correfpondence.His Majcfty being determined to cultivate the good underftanding fubfiftino between France and Great-Britain, by every means compatible with his dignity, and the good of his fubjeéts, thinks it neccifiry to make this proceeding known to the court of London, and to Ceclare at the fame time, that the contracting parties have paid great attention not to flipulate any exclufive advantages in favour of the French nation ; and that the United States have referved the liberty of treating with every nation whatever upon the fame footing of equality and reciprocity.In making this communication to the Court of London, the King 1s fiumly perfuaded, fhe will find new proofs of his Majefty's conftant and fincere difpofition for peace;
