her.The production here is seamless, a large part of that being due to some very savvy contributors: producers Organized Noize and Sean “Puffy” Combs and r&b outfit Society of Soul. The results make for some very satisfying musical moments.Midtempo grooves like “One More Try” and “Happy” are irresistible, while “Soul Replacement” and “Long Way To Travel” infuse social commentary without missing a beat. But Pebbles biggest stumbling block has been that her live shows simply don’t live up to their studio potential. Her ability to pull off credible live performances may be crucial to the success of this set since Straight From My Héart doesn’t have the feel of a commercial album, quality not withstanding. While detractors (and TLC fans) may be ready to dis her, this album is pretty solid and could do quite well.In Pebbles’ case, any measure of success may also be the sweetest revenge.Gerard Dee D’ANGELO: Brown Sugar (EMI Capital) It’s clear from D’Angelo’s debut set that this musician has potential.Ripe with jazzy inflections, cut-up beats and a sound that’s a mixture of early 70s soul and acid jazz, this is R&B that hasn't forgotten its innovative roots.Like so many contemporary artists, D'Angelo is fighting to stand out from the pack.He attacks the standard r&b crooner mold with challenging lyrics and interesting vocal constructions.Even so, the early Prince comparisons are inevitable (though back in the days when The Artist Formerly Known As Prince was more funk than roll).Like first single “Brown Sugar”, much of this album has that just-dropped-by-and- decided-to-jam feel to it.It’s almost casual when D’Angelo slinks through “Jonz In My Bonz” or shuffles through a reading of the Smokey Robinson classic “Cruisin”.In fact, what separates D’Angelo from the purple one is the constant cool blue persona that surrounds his music. He never gives way to Prince's shrieking ecstasy. He comes close on the gospel-like “- Higher,” but even then he prefers musical control to all out euphoria.Which makes Brown Sugar the kind of album that you want to throw on when friends drop by for no particular reason. It's a great atmosphere set that'll get people bopping without overpowering the conversation.Gerard Dee cannetfts du charme ANNETTE DUCHARME: Bloom (Reprise) If the whole of Bloom lived up to the level of its best cuts, this album would be a winner indeed. There’s no doubt Ducharme proves she can write tunes that rock and lyrics that illuminate a story from within. In a fairer world, songs like “Talk to the Waves” and “Polarize”, with Ducharme’s almost childlike voice and penchant for loud guitars, would find an immediate home on radio. But despite a good, chunky guitar line here or an arresting image there, Ducharme doesn't quite manage to put it all together for much of the album. And a pair of Tom Cochrane covers from his most recent album are win-some, lose-some — “Best Waste of Time” gets an angry, acoustic reading that works well, but “Flowers In the Concrete” is so like the original that one wonders, what was the point?Bob Weber (CP) Trio Matthieu to play Lennoxville on Friday LENNOXVILLE — The Trio Matthieu will The Record-TOWNSHIPS WEEK— November 24-December 1, 1995-—+ COVER Humor, h By Sunil Mahtani LENNOXVILLE — “I'm tired of being a celebrity,” whispers an exasperated Kay Kinsman.“I just want to go my quiet nun-like way.” The Lennoxville painter, relaxing on a couch in her apartment on Belvidere St., is exhausted.A recent bout of double pneumonia while on a trip to Czechoslovakia has taken its toll on the 86-year- old.Add to that the surge of interest that is currently surrounding a major retrospective exhibition of her work at the Bishop's University Artists’ Centre and this is one lady that needs to take it easy. She should be used to the attention by now.A Lennoxvil- le fixture for over a decade, the good-natured Kinsman is a magnet that attracts the creative and the curious.People simply follow her wherever she goes, and it is clear why: she is a first-class cut-up who speaks her mind.NO-NONSENSE Now, no one who’s ever met the no-nonsense octogenarian would compare her to a nun, but it’s exactly this kind of self- depreciating humor that gives her opinions strength and her watercolors warmth.Humor is also often a determining factor when Kinsman sets out to capture a subject in her paintings.“I look at something and if I think it’s funny, particulalry if it’s funny, or if it has human interest or if its got drama, then I just paint it,” she said earlier at the gallery.“I never work it out philosophically.” The Spontaneous Visions on dispay are culled from a lifetime of experiences. There are over 50 bright and breezy works — from a 1931 gouache of her late husband Ronny “- burning the midnight oil” to a 1995 crayon and watercolor painting of the gazebo at Bishop’s University.THEMES The paintings and drawings are divided into subjects to help viewers travel through the themes that have preoccupied the California-born artist over the past 50 years.A zest for life and people are evidenced in these works.Children, street scenes, still lifes, heritage architecture, travels to Spain, Provence, Moscow, England, Ireland, the Gaspé Coast are all represented. The wide-ranging exhibit, guest curated by Monique Nadeau-Saumier, includes work borrowed from corporate collections such as Alcan that haven't been seen before around these parts.Looking around the gallery, Kinsman was asked to reflect on her work.As usual, what followed was a one-liner.“I feel as though I've used up an awful lot of paper,” she said Kay Kinsman.‘I never thought of myself as a painter or a myself from being bored.’ with a straight face that soon gave way to a broad smile.“And you can tell how long ago they are by the quality of the paper.I used to have to stretch the paper and it was a whole business. Now today, you just go down to the Bishop's arts centre and buy a pad and that’s it.” DOCTOR KAY Kinsman has bought quite a few art supplies at Bishop's.From continually taking courses there to receiving an honorary doctorate in 1990, she has remained a campus coed since she arrived in Lennoxville. The exhibit includes the beautifully illustrated covers of term papers Kinsman handed in for courses she took at Bishop’s such as English, Fine Arts and Music. As well, hanging from the ceiling are a few puppets Kinsman created in England and which she refurbished here. She plans to present a storytelling hour for kids one Saturday in December, when she will read a story based on her puppets, which are decked out in Medieval costumes.Kinsman is certainly well- loved in the university community, and for that matter, all around Lennoxville. The town means much to her as well.“I've made lots of friends, many beloved friends,” she said back at her home with her cat Tackaberry by her side. She adopted him on Halloween some six years ago and is a constant companion. She’s raised a family and keeps in touch with her children (Jocelyn lives in England, and Jeremy, the Canadian ambassador to Russia, resides in Moscow), is well-travelled, has painted, exhibited and lived around the world, but Kinsman makes sure not to take herself too seriously.“I never thought of myself as a painter or anything that sounds pompous,” she said.“I just keep myself from being bored.” AL CAPONE She might downplay her own celebrity, but she’s certainly hobnobbed with enough of them. One of favorite meetings occured during her stint as a journalist in Havana, Cuba. One day she was bemoaning the lack of excitement and wishing out loud for somebody interesting to interview.“They said as a joke, ‘Well Al Capone is staying at the Bil- tmore, so why don’t you interview him?I took it for real,” recalled Kinsman, adding she * ink and watercolor on nything that sounds pompous.I just keep uman interest keep Kinsman Hg RECORDPERRY BEATON soon set out in search of the feared gangster.“When I got to the hotel, Al Capone was steping out of the elevator with three of his hoods.I said, ‘Can you give me an interview? He was so startled.I didn’t look like a gangster or a moll.He said, ‘Okay, let's have a drink’.” Kinsman said when they sat down, she froze.“I couldn’t think of anything to ask him, except Have you bumped anybody off lately, so I asked him a dumb question: ‘Do you like Havana Mr.Capone?” When Kinsman raced back to the paper with what she thought was a scoop, her editor said she was a fool, but not i painting because she didn’t ask any probing questions.“If people know Al Capone is in town, we'll lose customers,” Kinsman remembered was his reply.“He ripped my interview into shreads.” DEVILISH STREAK Kinsman has always had a devilish streak running through her.It found its way into her art as early as four years old, when her first drawing was a depiction of a parish priest on a toilet.Today, she said she still enjoys tormenting people with off-beat depictions of themselves. It makes sense. If she’s not going to take herself too seriously, then others shouldn’t either.Kinsman’s already met a 1930s gangster, now she’s looking for a 12th-century songwriter.Kinsman’s latest project is a book.“It’s on a hero of the 12th- century. He's famous. He wrate the first pop song that was ever written, ‘Summer Is A Comin’ In’.She’s still in the midst of proving her hypothesis, so everything is under wraps for now.The woman who says she finds life interesting still paints as often as she can.“I paint as often as I can find paper to cover. So it depends on the paper supply,” she teased. How does painting make her feel?“Happy.I enjoy it.It's fun,” Kinsman said, adding mischievously, “Is that what you wanted me to say?” Kay Kinsman’s Spontaneous Visions are on display good book, though, it's hard to criticize.Black’s been receiving — and saving — letters from listeners who enjoy his Basic Black show on CBC Radio, and over the years, those letters started to get out of control.“People write me such great letters and I just can’t throw away a personal letter.First there was a file drawer full of them, then a cabinet, then they filled up a room, then another room.” He might have kept on filling up rooms with letters if he hadn't decided to move from Fergus, Ont., to Saltspring Island off the B.C.coast.It was obvious the letters couldn’t all be packed and moved, so he and partner Lynne Raymond started sorting through them, re-reading and remembering and choosing the best to keep — and then realized the best letters should be in book for everyone to enjoy.“We sorted them into piles according to topic and all the piles looked about the same size, so we thought that was a good plan.Lynne did most of It is to be his emergency money in case things ever go wrong.Ginger, meanwhile, has been giving Lester tens of thousands of dollars and still sees thin plot him.Ace discovers her deception but remains married to her.Lester gets beat up, of course, but is allowed to live.As Ace’s relationship with Ginger ends, so does his alliance with Nicky, who has double crossed the mob bosses. The score is settled in a climactic mass murder scene, played out to the Animals’ “Rising Sun”.Scorsese has a terrific soundtrack throughout Casino. But the music takes over. The plot is so uninvolving you easily begin listening to the great songs — Stones, Cream, early rhythm and blues and top 40 from the '70s — that you ignore what’s happening on the screen.De Niro seems to be the centre of the movie. He keeps it, and everyone else, on an even keel, and he’s just great — pink socks and all! But Stone is out of her league.Still, Ginger might just be her best performance to date, because she is well directed.Casino certainly isn’t the masterpiece GoodFellas was, and it may be unfair to make the comparison because Good- Fellas was driven by a strong script.Casino was based on the book by Pileggi, who based it on a real-life story.* BOIRE PNR RAR CAE LAN) RECOGNIZED FOR THEIR TALENT AND MAY BE ELIGIBLE TO RECEIVE LOANS & BURSARIES.QUEBEC 08345A jrour BEGINS wh us: ESIGN CAREERS: OVIE SPECIAL EFFECTS ARTOON ANIMATION / 2D & 3D NTERACTIVE GAME DESIGN ILM, VIDEO & TELEVISION PRODUCTION ULTIMEDIA DESIGN NTERTAINMENT INFOGRAPHIC DESIGN "]
