[AMIDENIS 565-1376 Lennoxville J1M 1H9 2,rue Queen By Claudia Villemaire COOKSHIRE — The 4-H competitions are back at the Cooks- hire Fair this year, thanks to the efforts of one of the area’s up- and-coming young agricultural producers, Trudy Beaton. With a long family tradition in agriculture and connected activities, Beaton decided to see if the local 4-H club could be revived after several years of inactivity. It seemed a natural thing to do for a young woman who grew up immersed in calf-club activities and who began showing at the earliest possible age.“So I called a few of the older kids that had also been active in the local club,” she recounted.“- My buddy Casey Stanley and I drew up a list of possible people we could interest with typical 4-H activities. We realized many were either not living on a farm or didn’t necessarily have a calf available to work with, so we invited kids to join with almost any kind of animal,” Beaton explained. Now there are 25 young members in the revived club varying in age between 5 and 10 years old. Some do have calves but several have turned up with rabbits and even a pair of ducks.Gamboling kids.hire Fair.baby goats that is .bring a smile to the saddest face.Over 80 kids and goats and all their trappings will be waiting to entertain in their own stable at the Cooks- can melt the coldest heart and Béton Aimé Coté Ltée Best wishes to the Cookshire Fair! Cookshire Fair Supplement—THE RECORD—Tuesday, August 16, 1994—3 Ten trophies up_for grabs Horse show to draw more entries than ever.By Claudia Villemaire COOKSHIRE — He’s not very tall and carries no excess weight whatsoever. But Garnet Matthews’ energy seems endless — especially when it comes to getting ready for the biggest horse show ever at this year’s county fair.“We have more horses and ponies coming than we have room for,” Matthews said, as guided a weed-eater along the ring fence around the Cookshire fairgrounds. On Saturday more than two dozen volunteers turned up to spiffy up the grounds ! for the Compton County Exhibition’s 149th annual event, which opens this Thursday.“The first year we started, there were a lot of classes with only one or two entries. This year with 70 animals entered, classes will be pretty full across the board,” Matthews said.A complete revision of the horse show classes a couple of years ago has resulted in an equal mixture of serious, timed and fun events.“I think that’s part of the secret of success,” Matthews said.“But you also have to take into consideration < CARDIAN SRHEL SRE the time competitors have between events. Some classes require quite a bit of preparation, such as a kiddies’ costume class or a fine harness class, while others such as the speed classes need a little time to cool their horses down before coming out for, say, a pleasure class.” VOLUNTEERS IMPORTANT Oh yes, there’s more to it than meets the eye and fair organizers are thanking their lucky stars that they have a keen group of volunteers willing to help out.“We couldn’t do it without them,” said Matthews ° Las 5 4, ae sa % quipped as he took another swipe with the weed eater at this .year’s crop of grass.Matthews said competitors in the horse show this year don’t have to worry about accomoda- tions, either. The fair has stabling for 64 horses and ponies and organizers say they'll simply divide some box stalls to increase the capacity, if needed.Horse shows begin each morning of the fair at 9 a.m.Competitors must bring their animals to the grounds no later than Thursday evening and be ready to strut their stuff right after breakfast on Friday. The shows continue all day Friday, then again on Saturday end Sunday, finishing with a horse parade and an awards presentation in front of the grandstand on Sunday afternoon.“We had only one trophy to give away the first year we held the show but now we have ten,” said Matthews. The popularity of the three-day event is such that nt that offers free camping facilities to competitors come long distances to participate.“It looks like the best year yet,” Mathews said, adding that plans were already taking shape for the 150th anniversary celebrations of Compton County fair next year.“And next year we hope will be a crowning event,” he said.Best Wishes to Cookshire Fair!
