we often don’t think of them because they're subtle, while others are more extreme.Bob can’t stand the texture of tapioca pudding, another the taste of fruitcake (perhaps even this author, who loves all of the ingredients separately, but not bricked together), Henry is bothered by loud, or shrill, noises, Peg likes to keep lights dim, Lucian prefers his coffee very, very hot, Suzy loves cool showers, Steve tends to bounce his legs, Jacques drums his fingers on the tabletop (but only when he plays cards) and Rube has chewed the top of every pen in the house to bits.www.saywhydoi.com has some great points on why folks fidget: They list five reasons and explanations in particular (in greater detail on their site): 1) Fidgeting as “displacement behaviour”: The most common reason for fidgeting is “displacement.” The fidget is an expression that is displacing, or taking the place of an emotional which you Fidget have but are unable to express directly.2) Fidgeting to comfort ourselves: Different fidgets have different purposes.Whilst some are pure displaced expressions of an emotion, for example, rapid and urgent pen-clicking may be associated with impatience, and fingernail chewing may be linked with “eating yourself up” over something, other fidgets are less “displaced emotions and more “self comforting” actions (examples: stroking our hair or beard, caressing the face, neck, arms, legs, etc.) 3) Excess energy: Whether excess energy is caused by having one too many cups of coffee, too much sugar, or some other kind of stimulant, fidgeting may be the by-product of excess energy. As the Law of Thermodynamics states: Energy cannot be created or destroyed, it can only be transferred. The energy has to go somewhere, and if you are unable to start cartwheeling ecstatically through the room, it may express itself as fidgeting.4) Attention-seeking: It depends what the fidget is, but sometimes, a fidget may be a cry for attention. This is especially true in children who are joyful when a teacher or parent finally speaks to them, if only to say: “Stop fidgeting!” 5) Medical predispositions for fidgeting: Some medical conditions increase the likelihood of fidgeting.Examples: Blood sugar imbalances, hormonal changes (ex.Elevated testosterone or hyperthyroidism), brain chemical imbalances, medication-induced changes in the body.) Now we have an idea of why we fidget (at least some of the reasons), and most people can trace the reasons to very specific, personal technicalities related to their own fidgeting habits, but can fidgeting actually be a good thing?BBC News says yes it can! A 2005 report noted that “Children who fidget with their hands in class learn more quickly than those who stay still, say researchers.Psychologists found that children who could move their hands around freely were better at learning than pupils who were not allowed to move. They believe that hand movements and gestures can help children to think, speak and learn.” (from news.bbc.co.uk) (Sidebar: I still count on my fingers. There’s just something reassuring about it.Helps me focus and keep track.I hid my hands in math class in elementary school when this approach to counting was strictly forbidden.) It goes without saying that this ease goes with us through life - often certain reassuring sensory experiences help us to make our way through life.Smells, tastes, forms of touch, movement, and sound can ease us through activities, or stop us in our tracks. Here is one way that the special needs community has benefitted the greater culture.Fidget toys and chewable products (such as the “chewy tube”) are now designed not just for children, but for adults as well, in order to withstand more intense use.The number of websites, crowdfunding campaigns and companies now specializing in “fidgets” is a growing market, and the social acceptability and awareness of the need to “stim” (self-stim- ulate, a term formerly predominantly used with people on the Autism spectrum or diagnosed with ADHD) is creating a trend towards acknowledging how sensory experiences can develop more focused work-environments as well.Even Forbes has gotten on the fidget toy bandwagon, with the headline “Fidget Spinneres Are The Must-Have Office Toy for 2017.” (more at www.forbes.com - from December 23, 2016 by James Plafke, writing on technology) A current obsession in our household, the discussion turned to the trades, and how many tradespeople will fiddle with nuts and bolts, turn bearings or the like. The idea of “design-your-own-fidget” became a family activity over the weekend, and resulted in fidget building with Lego.Featured is a design created by eleven- year-old Leander, with twisting and turning bits and unusually-textured surfaces.Let’s face it, a great deal of art and invention likely owes its existence to excess energy and a need for release.l’m willing to bet that Finstein and Co.Were fid- geters too! of an organization known as Friendship Force International (FFI), will be hosting a walk around Lac des Nation on the night of March first.Set to start at 6:15pm near the Armand-Nadeau pavilion in Sherbrooke’s Jacques Cartier Park, the event aims to bring the people of Sherbrooke closer together through a symbolic stroll through the nations and cultures of the world.“We see ourselves as citizens of the world,” said Hélène Ouellet, coordinator of the evening event, explaining that the activity is meant to be a way for people to connect regardless of cultural differences.Ouellet said that FFI is a non partisan, not-for-profit organization with a focus on promoting friendship and peace in the world. In addition to this being the 13th year for the Sherbrooke walk, this year also marks 40 years since the organization as a whole was founded.“We will recognize that as well,” the coordinator said, explaining that the or- Fi the thirteenth year in a the Governors of the United States on March first of that year, adding that it is in honour of that event that the walk takes place every year on the same date.“Other groups do not necessarily do a walk, some of them have a community meal,” Ouellet said, pointing out that the idea to “world friendship day” is to celebrate the interconnectedness of people in different parts of the world.“Every group has its own way to celebrate and (walking) is ours.” The theme for the 2017 edition is “Let’s talk- Yes to life, friendship, and peace.” “This year’s theme really spoke to me, particularly after recent events,” said the honourary chairperson for 2017, Edwin Moreno, alluding to the recent shooting in Quebec City as well as other traumatic world events. In 2016 the walk drew 225 participants, and Oeullet said she hopes that this year’s event will do just as well, if not better.Outlining the walk itself, the coordinator said that after a quick message of welcome and a send-off by Moreno, walkers will be asked to pair off and make their way around the lake in teams in the name of getting to know each other and building cooperation. When they get back, the walkers will be greeted with coffee, hot chocolate, and cookies as well as live music and the possibility of door prizes.“It’s all free,” Oeullet said.“The idea is to invite everyone to give of themselves and receive in return.” Although Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement calling for warm weather and rain for Wednesday, the coordinator remained positive.“In good weather and bad weather we walk for peace,” Oeullet said, noting that the weather has always been cooperative in the Saint-Francis floodplain and the cost of bringing all of the current buildings up to present day building codes was estimated at $5.7 million.Despite the fact that the demolitions underline the need now what about Jackie?Well, she gets her time and important story in the film Jackie. The movie is structured around an interview with a sensitive reporter about one week after the Dallas horror story where Jack was assassinated in 1963.Only one week? How did she manage? Some kind of a control-freak factor at play here?I would probably have missed the movie except for my wife’s urging, but I am glad I did.It is an honest powerful and painful story and focusses primarily on a very few number of days: Trip to Dallas; JFK assassinated; blood spattered about everywhere; LB] replaces JFK as against the Titan on October 6th and the Voyageurs October 29th.Two days later, after the Cape Breton win, against the Wildcats the Phoenix tragically fell for the trap game against the league’s bottom ranked team. Before the disappointing loss, the Birds rallied late and battled back from a 4-2 deficit, tying the game 4-4, but suffered the heartbreaking defeat as the Wildcats prevailed with a late score to win the game in regulation.Down 3-2 with the Phoenix net empty to get an extra-attacker on the ice, Alexandre Renauld scored at 18:46 to put the Wildcats up 4-2.With the odds stacked against them Sherbrooke kept up their relentless pressure, emptying their net once again to try and get back in the game. However unlikely it may have been, Stephane Julien’s squad defied the odds and successfully tied the game scoring two straight goals eleven seconds apart making it 4-4.Nicolas Poulin beat Waite with a quick wrister from the top of the right circle at 18:58 and then Marek Zachar scored the game tying goal off a rebound from a shot by Pelletier, after captain Hugo Roy won the offensive draw cleanly to the sharpshooter. With the 4,915 fans in the building expecting overtime after the game was tied 4-4.Julien Tessier ended the Phoenix’s comeback hopes with his second goal of the game, scoring the game winner with just 19 seconds remaining in the game as the Wildcats ended their 25-game losing streak against the Phoenix. The Birds outshot the Wildcats 50-29 while both teams were 1 for 3 on the power play.Evan Fitzpatrick made 24 saves on 28 shots while Waite stopped 46 of 50, earning the second star of the game. The next day, after the Moncton loss, against Acadie-Bathurst Sherbrooke heavily outshot their opponent to start the game but the opportunistic Titan capitalized on second chances scoring off rebounds on multiple goals.Late in the game down 4-3 with a power-play and their net empty the Phoenix gave up two empty net goals, to make it 6-3, as Titan forward Antoine Morand completed his first hat-trick of the year with the final goal of the game.Against the Titan, Sherbrooke forward Evan MacKinnon had a multi-point game with a goal and an assist. It was MacKinnon’s first goal as a member of the Birds, since being traded from Rouyn-Noranda back in December, scoring off a deflection of a Yann-Félix Lapointe point shot past Titan goalie Anthony Dumont-Bouchard.After 60 games on the year the Birds are barely holding on to the final spot in the President’s Cup QMJHL Playoffs.Sherbrooke currently sits in 16th place with 50 points on the season. However, only six points separate 13th place Val- d’Or and the Phoenix.Sherbrooke will play five of their last eight games against teams that have yet to clinch a playoff spot and four of them will be at the Palais des Sports Léopold-Drolet.The Birds will take on the Gatineau Olympiques next at the Palais des Sports Léopold-Drolet.This season the Phoenix are 2-3-0 against the Olympiques. The last time the two teams played Sherbrooke was the victim of an outstanding performance from Vitalii Abramov, who scored a hat trick and added two assists in a 6-2 defeat of the Birds.(Governor (General to honour Subban for $10 million children's hospital pledge The Canadian Press Gen.David Johnson to acknowledge his charitable work. The former Montreal Canadiens star will be given a Meritorious Service Decoration (civil division) while 12 others will receive the Sovereign's Medal for Volunteers in a ceremony on Wednesday in the P.K.Subban Atrium at the D efenceman P.K.Subban will receive an honour from Gow.Montreal Children's Hospital.Subban was traded to Nashville last year and on Thursday will play his first game in Montreal since the deal.On Sept.15, 2015, Subban pledged to raise $10 million over seven years through a program called P.K.'s Helping Hand to aid families struggling financially due to a child's illness. The hospital named its atrium for the Toronto native to mark what it called ~ "the biggest philanthropic commitment by a sports figure in Canadian history." Subban vowed to honour the pledge after he was traded on June 29.The award is intended to “recognize the extraordinary people who make Canada proud.Their acts are often innovative, set an example or model for others to follow, or respond to a particular challenge faced by a community.Recipients inspire others through their motivation to find solutions to specific and pressing needs or provide an important service to their community or country.” Donate it to Is your car dyiNg?Tne Kidney Foundation of Canada! history of lying and manipulation. One of his sisters goes beyond that. She decided days before our wedding to reveal that she was abused when she was a teenager.Over the years, she has been caught in lies — so many lies we don’t know what is the truth. She made sure to tell all her nieces about her abuse as soon as they turned 14 — the age at which she was abused. She took all her parents’ money and plays games with her therapists. When my husband’s parents passed away, she decided to tell people that her dad wasn’t really her dad and that he had abused her.She also said her uncle was her real father.None of these people is alive to defend himself. Now I've found out that she’s also been going around saying my husband — her brother — has violated her.Since my husband’s parents died, she has cut herself off from us.It hurts my husband, but he simply wants an apology from her.I don’t want her in our lives anymore.I don’t want her telling lies and accusing our sons of things or telling our daughters her personal problems. What is the best way to handle this?— Tired of Twisted Sister- in-Law Dear Tired: It sounds as if your sister-in-law suffers from mental illness and the death of her parents exacerbated her condition. If your husband and his other siblings are on board, you could try staging an intervention with the help of a licensed therapist, with the goal of her committing to a treatment plan.Regardless, I think you’re wise not to let her spend time (especially unsupervised) with your children. It was highly inappropriate for her to discuss abuse with 14-year-old children. She’s unpredictable, and until she’s willing to get help, she’s forfeited the right to close relationships with her nieces and nephews.Send your questions for Annie Lane to dearan- nie@creators.com.1,604 278 4604 Printed and distributed by PressReader press [(efe[df PressReader.com + COPYRIGHT AND PROTECTED BY
