Submitted by Brome County Historical Society On December 23, 1900, Reginald Aubrey Fes- senden asked his assistant a simple question: “One, two, three, four…is it snowing where you are Mr.Thiessen?” Less dramatic than Archimedes’s “Eureka!”, the trivial question asked by Fessenden was no less historic for it was the first time the human voice was transmitted wirelessly.Six years later, on Christmas Eve 1906, Fessenden would once more make history when he played a rendition of “O Holy Night” on his violin that was heard by ships sailing the Atlantic – the world’s first radio broadcast.Fessenden was born in East Bolton on October 6, 1866 to Clementina Trenholme and Reverend Elisha Joseph Fessenden. After spending his early years in Brome County, Fessenden moved to Ontario but returned to his native Quebec shortly after.A gifted student, Fessenden was invited to teach at Bishop’s College School in Lennoxville at the age of fourteen. From Lennoxville, Fessenden moved to Bermuda to teach and then New York with the hopes of working for Thomas Edison.Although he was initially refused employment, he would eventually become one of the lead scientists for Edison. In 1890, while working for Edison, Fessenden was called to J.P.Morgan’s apartment following complaints of constant electrical fires. In response, Fes- senden developed a new compound to insulate electrical wires thereby creating wire insulation.Fessenden was handsomely paid by Morgan and purchased a Tiffany’s engagement ring that he offered to Helen Trout whom he had met in Bermuda. After leaving Edison’s company, Fessenden returned to professorial work all the while continuing his experiments.Eventually foregoing his teaching career, Fessenden embarked on his greatest period of productivity in the early 20th century with the first voice transmission, the first voice broadcast, and the creation of his own company: the National Electric Signaling Company (NESC).While patent infringement was an ever-present danger for Fessenden – who was in fact pushed out of the NESC by his own partners – Fessenden also recognized the public value of his inventions.Having successfully invented SONAR to detect icebergs and calculate the depth of the sea floor, Fessenden worked with the Canadian Government and British Admiralty throughout the First World War.In the post-war period, Fessenden’s work slowed and, supported by a financial payout from a legal settlement in 1928, he moved to Bermuda where he would live until his death in 1932.Fessenden’s life story reads less like a historical narrative and more like Hollywood drama with its genius protagonist, titans of industry, patent stealing, global war, and an endearing love story. In this column we have explored Fessenden’s biography and for the next column, we will turn our attention to the various reasons for his relative lack of fame despite having secured over 500 patents and set the foundation for modern telecommunications.PHOTO COURTESY BCHS Reginald Aubrey Fessenden Setting the foundation for modern telecommunications Christmas Community It is widely proven that, in no particular order, learning to play an instrument reduces stress, uses almost every part of the brain, strengthens your immune system, increases time management skills and strengthens memory! The ukulele is inexpensive, portable, easy to learn and really fun with a group! Give it a try at our very first meeting of the club on January 27 when we will learn a few basic chords to play some well-known tunes together.Ukuleles will be provided for the first session. Please call Barb at 450-248-0530 for more information and to register. Winter tends to discourage us from getting out to social events, so we’ve planned a monthly “Movie Matinée” to entice you to keep up with your social contacts. We’ll even come to pick you up and bring you home!
