before— or if you know me—you know I have two daughters, now seven and four years old.We enjoy reading out-loud as a family very much and I have a deep fondness for children’s literature. Some books go beyond the common classi?cations and achieve accessibility and enjoyment for all ages. This is one of the many things which stands out to me as I re-read the Canadian literary treasure, Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery.Critics have often diminished this book because its audience has been primarily young and female.Despite being relegated to ?uf?er and less “serious” genres, LM Montgomery’s works are international best sellers. Her books have been translated into not only many different languages, but also adapted into musicals, plays, ?lms and television series. The most recent CBC adaptation, “Anne with an E” is a masterful show, which delves into some of the deeper issues from the ?rst of the Anne books. While diverting a tad from canon, it takes the viewer deeper into a character through an important contemporary lens.If you have never had the pleasure of being exposed to this Canadian classic set in rural PEI, allow me to summarize.Anne of Green Gables is the story of a young orphan girl who is adopted by Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, unmarried siblings, who, after requesting to have a young boy to help on their family farm, accidentally receive a precocious 11-year-old girl named Anne. She is surprising in every way.“You’re not eating anything,” said Marilla sharply, eying her as if it were a serious shortcoming.Anne sighed.“I can’t.I’m in the depths of despair. Can you eat when you are in the depths of despair?” “I’ve never been in the depths of despair, so I can’t say,” responded Marilla.“Weren’t you?Well, did you ever try to IMAGINE you were in the depths of despair?” “No, I didn’t.” “Then I don’t think you can understand what it’s like. It’s very uncomfortable a feeling indeed.” After initially hesitating—and almost sending her back— the siblings agree to keep and raise this Anne, and the story unfolds from there. It is a story of growing up.It is a story of love growing in unsuspecting hearts.Anne of Green Gables is the ?rst of several books which detail the life and adventures of Anne Shirley Cuthbert. This ?rst novel tells of her arrival at Green Gables as a girl, and concludes 5 years later when she returns to her community after completing her course at teacher’s college. If I were able to tell a humorous anecdote today, and know that it would remain funny for over 100 years, I would ?nd that to be an amazing feat. There are many hilarious moments in this book, as Anne manages to ?nd herself in many scrapes and mischief. These include accidently making her best friend drunk, dying her hair green by mistake and putting medicinal liniment in a cake for the local minister. This book has made me laugh aloud, just as many times when level-headed but snarky Marilla responds with an eye-roll or a quip after Anne shares a poetic soliloquy about ?owers or frost or other natural wonders. The dynamic between the characters is alive with the full spectrum of human emotions.“Why must people kneel down to pray?If I really wanted to pray I’ll tell you what I’d do.I’d go out into a great big ?eld all alone or in the deep, deep woods and I’d look up into the sky— up—up—up—into that lovely blue sky that looks as if there was no end to its blueness. And then I’d just feel a prayer.” This book, which is more than 100 years old, remains progressive and important in the commentary it makes on society.Certainly some of the ideas are comically outdated (like the idea that no woman could ever be a church minister) but for the most part, Anne challenges norms at home and at school in ways which are still relevant in 2020.The books puts a big emphasis on education and doesn’t exclude any of the characters from its bene?t.The Avonlea students experience two teachers during their tenure: the ?rst is a hot headed and arrogant man who, distracted by his inappropriate infatuation with a senior student, often neglects the class. The second is a broad-minded woman who challenges the students to set high goals, takes them on trips to explore the forest as a part of their education and provides them with the emotional and spiritual support they need to achieve greatness. Her “modern” approach to education upsets the status-quo but facilitates an enthusiastic class of scholars who care deeply about learning.I love this book from many angles.I love it as a girl with a heart connected to nature who sees the magic and divinity of ?owers and trees.I love it as a mother who knows the power of love growing in one’s heart when you see your child blossom.I love it as an educator who sees how often the system does not work for kids and how doing something different might help kids but still inspire resistance.I love it as feminist, for its strong female role models, and its complex and three-dimensional characters.I love it because it celebrates oddness and eccentricities and being your whole self. Finally, I love it as reader, for it is a compelling story, which has been enjoyed for generations and remains a delight to share as I read it to my children. For the love of Anne The Record newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com Friday, July 24, 2020 Page 3 Matthew Sylvester Special to The Record The City of Sherbrooke recently released municipal documents revealing the city’s need to purchase a parcel of land from the Maison du Cinéma to make way for the reconstruction of the Grandes-Fourches bridge next year. The land, which was previously owned by the city before being sold to the Maison in 2010, is the outermost section of the movie theatre’s parking lot.It measures a total of 2,897 square metres, and if the deal goes through, will set the city back a total of $550,000.The purchase is just one of many planned for the Grandes-Fourches North revitalization project.Aside from reconstructing the bridge spanning over the Magog river, the project also aims to build a roundabout where the road intersects with Rue Terrill, as well as an extension to the small James S.Mitchell park. The city hopes a revitalization of the city centre’s aging infrastructure will boost foot traf?c to the area.Sherbrooke is still in talks to ?nalize the deal with the Maison. The documents report that the current plan is to purchase the land “little by little” rather than a full expropriation. The city is also committed to paying the theatre 100 per cent of the lot’s evaluated price rather than the 70 per cent minimum legally required for expropriation.A 2019 proposal for a unique “teepee themed” bridge to replace the crumbling one was denied by the city back in March for being $8 million over the original predicted budget.Instead, the new Grandes-Fourches bridge will be a much more budget conscious conventional bridge.Bromont sees spike in tourism despite ongoing pandemic By Michael Boriero – Local Journalism Initiative Reporter A wave of tourism is washing over Bromont as Quebecers scramble to ?nd things to do and salvage a summer that was effectively written off several months ago.“I would say that some hotels are telling me that right now they’re almost gaining back what they lost, but June was almost a washout,” said Marie Allaire, the city’s director of tourism development, adding that hotel bookings are heating up again. In a press release Thursday, Brom- ont, considered the door to the Eastern Townships, addressed a sudden surge in tourists in recent weeks. With the uptick in visitors, city council decided to make the area more accommodating to the current pandemic situation.Shefford Street was transformed into a one-way walking zone with picnic tables and access to bars and restaurants.Allaire said people could buy food or drinks and take them nearby to a park or on the street.“It’s crazy how people do picnics this year. All of our parks are full of people picnicking; they take out and have a good experience,” she said. The city has designated certain parks for visitors to drink alcohol and eat food.According to the director, health and safety guidelines imposed by the provincial government are being respected without any pushback.People are just happy to be on vacation somewhere, she explained.Although people are ?ocking to Bro- mont, Allaire noted that solo sports remain one of the main attractions. There are several golf courses in the area, but the most popular option has been cycling and mountain biking.“Cycling is big right now whether it’s road cycling, mountain biking, gravel cycling paths, it’s really huge right now,” Allaire said.“It’s also something you can do safely without interacting with others, so it’s been very popular.” Jean-François Beaulieu, head chef and co-owner at Edgar Hyperlodge, said he’s seeing a lot of tourists from Montreal and Sherbrooke.According to Beaulieu, people are heading to the Townships to get out of COVID-19 hot zones. They can work from their cottages or hotels, he explained, it’s all the same.Beaulieu said that business has been steady.Although it’s working at half capacity, the restaurant still churns out about 180 to 200 meals a day.The hardest part has been policing customers. He still gets people entering the restaurant without a mask and then refusing to put one on.But half the battle was with patrons who stayed until the early hours of the morning, and the government took care of that.“At the beginning we were closing at 3 a.m.when they said the bars could open, but the people from midnight to 3 a.m.don’t care about anything, so I think that’s the best move they did,” said Beaulieu. The city of Bromont did a very nice job putting up health and safety signs, he added, so tourists are aware that the rules are the same everywhere. He feels safe anywhere in the city, including grocery stores.Problems only start when people start drinking, he said.“When they come and they have no mask, we sell masks for a buck,” Beau- lieu said.“If you don’t have a mask we’re going to sell it to you and if you don’t want to wear it then you’re not allowed to get in, that’s it.” Camping is also a popular attraction for tourists.Ginette Parker, the owner of KOA Granby/Bromont, said she’s getting a lot of visitors from Sherbrooke and Montreal. She hasn’t had any issues with masks or people disrespecting the rules.“They read the rules, they sign the papers, and they do what they have to do, they’re not in groups and follow the rules at the pool, too,” she said.According to Parker, her campsite is a medium-sized lot, so she can’t have too many people staying there, which helps with the number restrictions. There’s enough space for everybody, she explained, and enough space to keep a two-metre distance. She also reminds campers that there is no partying at her site, but this isn’t a COVID-19 rule. She runs a fami- ly-friendly lot, so people are expected to go back to their camps at a reasonable hour.“We don’t allow it, after 11 p.m.you must be quiet and on the campsite, these are normal rules, so they’re used to it,” said Parker.TOURISM BROMONT Page 4 Friday, July 24, 2020 newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com The Record A night at the opera By Mead Baldwin Our family of 5 kids was built on routine in the early Sixties.Sunday morning we went to church.Saturday night was usually bath night, and we were given potato chips for a treat, after we had beans and wieners for supper. On Fridays we were allowed to have soda pop, so we nicknamed those days “Pop Night” and “Chip Night”.One summer Saturday night was different.Dad was taking Eva and Louise and me to the Haskell Opera House for a National Geographic Lecture. This was part of the summer series “Famous Explorers”.Dad loaded us into the station wagon, and we drove to the Stone House to pick up Grandpa.Tonight we were going to see a slide show about an adventurer’s canoe trip up the Amazon River.I had gone to lectures before, but always fell asleep.Maybe this time I would stay awake for the whole lecture. The Haskell Opera House was a world of wonders for a nine year old boy.It was built right on the American Border; half of the building was in Canada One section was a library.I still remember my Dad taking me there at 6 and receiving my ?rst library card. When he told me I could take out any books I wanted it felt like Christmas. The theatre half of the building was awesome. There was a balcony, and a stage that promised us a door to fantasy and adventure.Grandpa often told the story of the days of Prohibition, when there was a long bar on wheels, and if the authorities arrived it would be moved to the safe country. We made it just in time and took our seats before the curtain opened and the lecturer approached the podium.Strangely, he didn’t look like an explorer, with his fancy suit and thick glasses. He didn’t talk like one either.I had read all of Jules Verne’s novels and I knew what a real explorer was supposed to look like.I was expecting Captain Nemo and instead we were given Professor Plum. Then the slideshow began.I was a year older this summer, so instead of drifting off to sleep in the uncomfortable seats and mysteriously waking up in my bed at home on Sunday morning I was ready for action. We saw anacondas, piranhas swirling in the water, jaguars in the trees, and small canoes drifting through dangerous waters.I was transported to another world far from the farm and the lake and the Pinnacle. My heart raced as I saw deadly tarantulas and black widow spiders. My eyes grew wider with each new image. In my young mind I was a famous explorer on a quest to ?nd a lost world. Each new slide would evoke hushed excitement from the audience.Against my Dad’s advice I had brought my atlas, and traced the explorer’s route with my ?nger through the wilds of Brazil.Louise was already asleep by the time we arrived at the rainforest.I smiled to myself as I remembered how she had insisted on coming because she hated missing out on things. As the lecturer slowly shared his journey I noticed heads starting to nod off.Dad almost started snoring when I elbowed him and he stammered “I wasn’t falling asleep”.While he shook his head to get that glazed look out of his eyes it reminded me of the time we pulled a prank on him.We turned the television off after the ?rst period and pretended that the hockey game was over.He almost went to bed until he glanced at the clock and glared at us.Finally the slide show was over, and the lecturer asked for questions.I quickly put my hand up and waved it frantically. When he ?nally pointed to me I stood up and blurted out “How can I get to become an archeologist?” He looked at me with surprise, for he hadn’t mentioned archaeology in his lecture. He smiled, dismissed me with his eyes, and told me to study hard in school, and then maybe one day I too could explore unknown worlds. As we drove home that night I wondered if there would be any left by the time I was old enough to go.Time management As I peer outside through the window, on this beautiful Sunday afternoon, a thought occurs to me: Why don’t I spend the rest of the day sitting on the porch, reading a book?I have a speci?c book in mind: ‘Time Management’.It’s been sitting on my nightstand for a while now and I haven’t really had the chance to look at it yet; question of time management, I suppose.Well, no more.Today is the day that I ?nally tackle ‘Time Management’! With unprecedented resolve, I go to the bedroom to fetch the book. But as I walk through the hallway, I see a stain on the carpet.‘It won’t take a minute,’ I tell myself as I grab some dish soap and a rag from the kitchen to scrub the stain off.A few minutes later, when I place the rag in the laundry basket right beside the washing machine, I notice a funny smell.I open the washing machine and discover wet laundry which must have been sitting there for who-knows-how- long, to judge by the stench.‘No way this can wait,’ a little voice inside my head tells me.I take the laundry out of the machine, load some into the dryer and haul the rest to the rack outside.Unfortunately, the rack is crooked and needs ?xing.I go back inside, grab a hammer, go outside again and bash the rack back into shape.Half-way through hanging the laundry, I’m out of clips.I have no choice but to rearrange the clothes, combining two items per clip. When I come back inside I write ‘laundry clips’ on the grocery list and, while I’m at it, add a few random items that we’ll probably need soon: milk, yogurt, potatoes, which reminds me that I’ve been planning to make potato salad on one of the coming days.I might as well check which other ingredients are necessary.I search online for potato salad recipes, and add ‘onions’ to the list. This gives me the idea to take my cooking up a notch and treat the family to a full spaghetti dinner.I put ‘spaghetti’ and ‘tomato sauce’ on the list and, in a burst of creativity, doodle tomatoes, potatoes, and spaghetti mounds in the margins of the list.‘For someone with not much of an artistic ?air, my doodling is not half bad,’ I think to myself.I wonder if this is a talent I should be developing. Are there any online tutorials for aspiring doodlers?A quick search proves that there are, indeed, many such tutorials on YouTube.I watch ?ve tutorials and learn how to draw ?owers, fruits, and butter?ies.Tutorials are so much fun.If it’s that easy to learn how to draw, I wonder how long it will take me to learn to play the piano. With YouTube’s kind help, pretty fast, it turns out.I choose an easy tune and practice it on the piano.Should I go for a more advanced tune next time?On second thought, why wait for next time? Why not now?I search up an intermediate piano tutorial and practice four more tunes. This takes me about an hour, during which, several Facebook noti?cations buzz on my cell phone, but I resist the temptation to check them.Replenished and invigorated by my music session, I go back online to have a quick look at all those noti?cations on my Facebook page.Folks are posting a lot today.I thumb-up a few posts, ‘love’ others, ‘hug’ a few others, ‘haha’ the funny ones, ‘gasp’ at the shocking ones, ‘shed-a-blue-tear’ at the sad ones, and ‘frown-an-orange-face’ at the contentious ones.Since I’m already online, I also check the CNN website (I love keeping abreast of the latest drama south of the border).I happen upon an interesting current-affairs analysis and read it all the way to the end.I click the links to three more articles by the same author and read them all the way to the end, too.I decide to write an email to the author, to let her know how much I appreciate the hard work she’d put into those fascinating articles. When I’m done, I reach for my glass of water, right beside my laptop, but it’s empty.I go to the kitchen and pour myself some water.Do we have ice cubes?I check in the freezer. It’s too full; I can’t see anything like that.I take everything out and reorganize the freezer, throwing away items I can’t recognize.I also ?nd the ice cubes and plop a few in my water.Truth be told, water with ice is kind of boring.I feel like turning my drink into lemonade.I squeeze half a lemon into my water and add a few mint sprigs from the garden. When I put my lemonade on the counter I realize how totally and ravishingly Instagramic it looks.I get my cell phone and snap several pictures.I also write down the recipe in case I decide to post it on social media. You never know. Then I drink it all up and put the glass in the sink, or at least, I INTEND to put the glass in the sink, only that the sink so crammed with unwashed dishes that you wouldn’t be able to shove a toothpick in there.I load the dishwasher, remembering to chuck the crushed mint (from my lemonade) in the compost bin.I then empty the compost, the recycling and the garbage and take it all to the bins outside. The weather is so glorious that I decide to stay outside and do some gardening.I plant a few ?ow- ers, pull out weeds, water the vegetable patch, mow the front lawn, and prune the cedar hedge.I see several neighbors walking by and we chat. Then I go for a walk around the neighborhood, through the forest, up the street, and back through the ?eld, ?nishing with a few stretch- ups in our front yard.I’m pretty sweaty when I’m back so I take a shower, wash my hair, and use the opportunity to trim my nails. This reminds me that I’ve been wanting to sort through the nail polish drawer.I wonder if I could donate the ones I haven’t even opened, to charity. In the same vein, it’s about time I went over my winter clothes and donated to charity the ones I don’t use anymore. There are three sweaters I can’t make up my mind about, so I try them on.I decide to keep two and give away one.I go to the basement to fetch a cardboard box, on which I write ‘charity’.It feels so good and liberating to give away things. What else can we give away?I walk from room to room and collect old teddy bears, kitchen towels, tablecloths, various toys, and an Atlas. The box is pretty heavy now so I take it to the van.The remote won’t open the door, though.I think it’s time to change the battery.I change the battery, check the other remote and change the other battery as well. When I go inside, it’s time to watch the evening News.Soon after that, I go to bed and my eyes fall on the book ‘Time Management’.It’s still there, unopened.Where did all the time go?I sure hope to ?nally get round to it next weekend.Didi Gorman The Record newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com Friday, July 24, 2020 Page 5 Supply Shop Clerk Founded in 1836, Bishop’s College School is one of Canada’s preeminent food security and all kinds of environmental risks like noise and air pollution,” Kaiser told The Record, explaining that in what he called “normal times” he was regularly called upon to interact with the city, various government ministries, and the media on a whole host of public health issues Although settled and at home on the island of Montreal for more than half of his life at this point, Kaiser traces his roots can back to a farm in Saint-Ar- mand and school days at Butler Elementary and Massey-Vanier.“I grew up on a farm, came to the city for cegep, and have been here ever since,” he said, explaining that his work with public health began after the end of his medical residency in 2014 “I think that I got the best of both worlds.” As one might expect, the spring and summer of 2020 have not been totally normal times.“I’ve been working, like pretty much everyone else in the public health department, on COVID for the last four months,” he said noting that, among many other tasks, this has meant occasionally stepping in for Montreal’s Public Health Director, Dr.Mylène Drouin, to speak on behalf of the department when she is unavailable.“It just so happens that the weeks when I have been replacing her have been particularly busy,” he said with a laugh.Although the COVID-19 pandemic has brought public health of?cials around the world into an almost unprecedented spotlight, Kaiser said that he feels that the attention is a strong reminder to be humble.“I think that if we don’t have a strong link with the public then it is much, much harder to do our work,” he said, describing communication as one of the most important functions of his job.“There is a big responsibility that comes with having the ear of the entire population. We really have to weigh our recommendations and our communications carefully.” The doctor said that he recognizes people can feel stressed or frustrated when recommendations seem to change from one week to the next, and described maintaining public trust as a high priority.“We almost need to put a clause before everything we say in these times that is, based on what we know at the moment, here is what we can tell you,” Kaiser said, explaining that even though there are people working every day to try to stay on top of the most recent information on the virus, even public health of- ?cials do not have crystal balls.“It’s a constant work in progress.” Part of that work, he continued, is walking the line between making the importance of an issue clear and overdoing it.“If you invoke climate change after every major storm, people become deaf to it,” Kaiser offered as an example, “and without the support of the public, our work is essentially meaningless.” On the other side of the coin, the doctor said that the pandemic response has offered an unusual opportunity to see the community respond directly to information presented.“When you’re talking about air pollution or climate change, you don’t necessarily see people changing their behaviours the next day,” he said, pointing out that when Montrealers who had been to bars since the start of the month were asked to get themselves tested, ‘people changing their behaviours the next day’ was exactly what could be seen.“I can only say thanks to the population of Montreal for that,” he said.“It shows that people are listening.” Kaiser spread that gratitude more broadly as well, adding that he believes the vast majority of people in the province are listening to public health directives aimed at helping people stay healthy.“That is really heartening.” Looking to his roots, Kaiser said that since the start of the pandemic, his family has only made the trip out to the Townships once.“That’s quite unusual, it’s been a real change in our patterns,” he said.“My kids are used to going out to see their grandparents more regularly. The doctor emphasized that he does not consider the strangeness of not going out to the country as often as usual nearly as disruptive as the changes elderly people have faced over the last several months of con?nement, but he also said that people should not dismiss the importance of normal social contact and connection as they strive to follow guidelines and keep one another safe.“The objective is always to maintain social connections to as close to normal as we can,” he said, stressing the fact that while it is important to manage risk, there are always factors that cannot be controlled.“We need to live our lives, we need to re-es- tablish and reinforce those social connections,” he said, encouraging people to ?nd a balancing point between taking necessary and recommended precautions and living in fear.“You never know if, two days after a visit, you are going to start coughing and have a fever,” Kaiser acknowledged, “but if you do, help us do our jobs; go get tested and isolate yourself, or it can really paralyse society.” COURTESY Dr.David Kaiser of Montreal’s public health department says that a childhood in the Townships has formed the foundation of the work he does today CONT’D FROM PAGE 1 looking for a fun way to celebrate her birthday in May.Already a volunteer for the Canadian Cancer Society, she decided to start the fundraiser, holding it in May around her birthday.Bremaud said roughly 20 people participated each year.In past years Bremaud and the walkers would set out at 7 a.m.and try to ?nish by 4 p.m.making it a full-day event. The event usually raised between $1,000 and $6,000 every year.Even though she was alone this year, she managed to raise $11,600 for the Canadian Cancer Society.A conservative estimate calculated four years ago put Bremaud at 900 km and $54,000 in the name of Cancer research.Since this year’s walk Bremaud is now at 1,100 km walked and likely well over $70,000 raised with her annual fundraiser, aptly named ‘I have Two feet, therefore I walk’.“I always admired Terry Fox,” Bremaud told The Record on 2016, adding that he was the inspiration for her 50 km fundraiser.“Most people have two feet and won’t go down the street,” Bremaud said, pointing out that Terry Fox embarked on a trip across the country with only one foot.“When I started the walk, I said I would organize it as respecting remunerated passenger transportation by automobile Twenty (20) days rather than the usual forty-?ve (45) regulatory days to “comment” on the three draft regulations complementary to the Act respecting remunerated passenger transportation by automobile (former Bill 17 as amended). And yes, and in the middle of summer vacation, and in full pandemic, from July 15 to August 3! For people with disabilities, there is very little gain in these regulations, but our losses described in the hearings on Bill 17 in 2019 remain. There is nothing on the obligation to have a minimum number of adapted vehicles for a respondent or a dispatcher. No regulation or provision from the ministry to requiring that there be accessible vehicles in certain territories where they are lacking: it is not required to do so in the new Law (article 156), this failure to respect the rights of individuals with disabilities could have been corrected by regulation! Still happy that we added in the regulations that wheelchairs for disabled people in paratransit must be attached to the 4 corners! We will have to return to the ?ght, to being watchful, to making demands and preparing legal proceedings.Equal rights for older people and people with disabilities is a reality that must be kept in mind .We have seen the harsh reality in these dif?cult times we are living through FRANCE CROTEAU RUTASM COORDINATOR My Take: By Gordon Lambie Think back to the person you were in February, and imagine telling them that by July it will be not just normal, but required that you wear a mask to go to the bank.February you would probably laugh at the idea of “gas gloves” and would be baf?ed and maybe a bit concerned about how the word “con?nement” has become a part of everyday speech.Who would have thought, four months ago, that summer fashion magazines would be offering tips on how to choose the right face covering for your out?t?These past few months have been packed with a lot of unexpected and largely unforeseeable events, but measured on the global scale of terrible things; being told that it’s in everyone’s best interest to wear a mask is neither surprising nor disastrous.Like a new pair of shoes, they just need breaking in.My Take: By Matthew McCully You don’t have to wear a mask. You also don’t have to drive on the right side of the road. But your odds of getting from point A to point B safely are exponentially higher if you do.I know it seems like an assault on your freedom to be forced to wear a mask.I guess in some ways it is.But let me explain why the rule was made.As a population we can’t be trusted. We are entitled, in a hurry and when no one is looking we throw things out the car window. It only takes one person ignoring a lane closure sign to back traf?c up for miles. That’s why there are lines on the road, and speed limits, and traf?c laws, and rules about wearing masks in public. To keep everyone on the same page and keep them safe.My Take: By Michael Boriero I’m about to drop an extremely hot take right now.Ready? Are you sure?Ok.Here I go.Wearing a mask doesn’t hurt you.It actually protects the people around you.Boom.I feel so relieved to ?nally get that off my chest. But seriously, what’s going on right now?How am I still reading news of anti-mask rallies and bogus science debunking the ef?cacy of masks?People are incensed that they are being forced to wear a mask in indoor public spaces. It infringes on their freedom of choice, they say.I’m sympathetic to that argument, we have our rights, but people around the world continue to feel the wrath of COVID-19.This is far from done. Our medical experts are telling us how we can beat this pandemic. So please, wear a mask, even if it is for a short grocery store run.My Take: By Matthew Sylvester Some people have been going around trying to say that masks are dangerous for you to wear.I don’t want to sound all dismissive and closed minded, but that’s just plain wrong. There are lots of videos ?oat- ing around on Facebook showing how wearing a mask increases your carbon dioxide intake, or makes you breathe viral particles right back into your lungs, or makes you breathe in more toxins. This probably sounds pretty cut and dry intuitive to some people, but you’d better talk to someone who went to medical school and knows a thing or two about biology before you make a decision that could get people sick. After all, people who know what they’re talking about are the reason why you’re only wearing a little piece of cloth over your mouth instead of a huge bird-shaped plague mask.Give them a little credit. The Record newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com Friday, July 24, 2020 Page 7 The Wippi is back on the water Record Staff The Wippi, the water taxi that has been ferrying pedestrians and cyclists back and forth between Ayer’s Cliff and North Hatley since 2018, is back this year.“The Wippi was established in 2018 in order to improve the cycling opportunities in the Memphremagog region, “said Vincent Gérin, president of the Massawippi Regional Park and mayor of the municipality of Ayer’s Cliff.“This shuttle connects the Les Grandes-Fourches and Tomifobia Nature Trail cycle paths, which crisscross the region. It has been a great success over the past two summers offering its passengers a very pleasant and safe way to cross the lake along its entire length, while experiencing the beauty of our landscapes from a different point of view, from some water.Due to the physical distancing measures required by the public health department, The capacity of the Wippi has been limited to eight passengers this summer, whether or not they have their bicycle.Certain control and hygiene measures are also being applied during boarding and all seats are disinfected after each use.The shuttle offers six trips per day from Thursday to Sunday, and each trip takes about an hour. The cost of a crossing is $20 per person or $30 for a round trip and a place on board must be reserved in advance. The boarding points are located at the municipal wharves of Ayer’s Cliff (Route 141, opposite the rest area) and North Hatley (Main Street, opposite School Street).New this year: from Monday to Wednesday, it is possible to take a trip on the waters of Lake Massawippi aboard the Wippi without making a prior reservation.Just get to Massawip- pi beach to get on board and enjoy the trip. The drop-in rate is $10 per person and the service is on a ?rst come, ?rst served basis. The schedule varies depending on traf?c and weather conditions. The shuttle will be in operation until September 2 as well as during the fall weekends until Thanksgiving.Visitors as well as citizens of the region are invited to take advantage of this attraction during the summer season. For more their online event a success but looking forward to getting back together in person in 2021.According at a press release issued by the organizers earlier this week, the three video performances of the 39th annual festival drew tens of thousands of views from across the province and around the world, with as many as 1,500 spectators watching together at a given time. The performances of the 17th and 18th of July should still be available to view for a limited time, as each of the virtual events is online up to seven days after the live broadcast.Festival-goers are therefore invited to visit the Facebook page of the Fête du Lac des Nations Promutuel Insurance without delay in order to experience the musical experience offered by the organization of the festival. As the ?rst evening of the festival drew to a close and Bleu Jeans Bleu answered the audience’s very last question, festival-goers learned that the group is already preparing to be back in the 2021 edition.Passes for next year’s festival are already on sale exclusively online at a cost of $40 + tax to mark the 40 years of the festival.Despite the apparent success of the free concerts, the fundraising campaign supporting the Fête du Lac des Nations Foundation for Children failed to draw the support it was looking for.As of July 21, only $1,713 of the $10,000 goal had been collected. As such, the campaign to help buy snowsuits for underprivileged children remains online.Promutuel Insurance Centre-Sud has committed to matching donations received up to $ 5,000.Potential donors have until July 25 to contribute at www.gofundme.com/f/ ensemble-au-chaud.Festival des Traditions du Monde goes virtual By Matthew Sylvester Special to The Record Sherbrooke’s classic summertime music and culture festival is taking a socially distanced approach this year after all in-person activities were cancelled back in March. The festival, which usually takes place in front of the Centre Julien Ducharme in Fleurimont, will instead be available from the comfort of one’s own home.Founded in 1998, the festival’s mission is the harmonization of inter-ethnic relations through the celebration and promotion of the various traditions of the world. This is done by showing off culturally unique food, dance, and musical performances by artists and artisans from all over the world. The festival’s organizers hope to foster intercultural friendships and acceptance by celebrating cultural differences. This year, instead of all the in- person venues, the festival will take the form of a series of videos made by the performers instead. The lineup includes names like Grammy award nominee Rocky Dawuni, Estonian band Trad.Attack!, and Italian traditional and electronic band Kalàscima. Some dance groups will also be making a submission, including Celtic group The StepCrew, Inuit artist Shauit, and the Toronto based Nagata Shachu Japanese Taiko and Music Group.Performances aimed at kids will also be available. The videos will be available for free during the festival’s normal dates from Aug.12 to 16 on the organization’s website at ftms.ca.MacDonald Road bridge in Hatley Township to begin in August Record Staff The Transport Ministry wishes to inform road users that repair work on the MacDonald Road bridge, located over the Massawippi River in the Township of Hatley, will begin on Monday, August 3, for a period of approximately two months. The main work consists of replacing the bridge deck.Repairs will also be made to the foundation.Due to the nature of the work, the bridge will be closed to traf?c throughout the construction period. As a result, a detour of roughly 8 km will be in place via Belvedere Street South, Haskell Hill Road and Route 108.In December 2019, the Department was forced, as a preventive measure, to close one of the two traf?c lanes and reduce the allowable load limits to 10 tonnes in order to maintain the integrity of the structure leading up to the replacement of the deck.Once the work is completed, users will once again be able to travel on the fully functional bridge without restrictions. The work may be modi?ed due to operational constraints or weather conditions. To ?nd out about current obstacles, consult Québec 511. House Cloudy, Meat Cloudy, Meat Go Away Uni (:40) Looped Chuck’s Assembly Your week on TV Cinnamon buns I was excited to meet a reader at my booth at the Lennoxville Farmer’s Market last Saturday morning.I will be at the market every Saturday from 10 a.m.to 1 p.m.until early October. In my past articles I have written exclusively about pizza. If you have not yet tried my pizza dough mix, I hope you will come down to the market and pick up a pack or two.I look forward to meeting you in person. At my booth I have a photo album of the many different ideas that people have used my pizza dough mix for.I am always in awe of the creativity of people.Aside from making different styles of pizza, from thick crust to thin, from deep dish Chicago style to pizza pockets, there are still so many more things that can be made with my dough mix, like fresh bread or dinner rolls, pretzels, ?at bread and English muf?ns, but one favourite recipe is for cinnamon buns.Normally I would suggest that you use your favourite pizza dough recipe, but I cannot guarantee the results, so here, for best results, I suggest you use a package of Brad’s Gourmet pizza dough mix.Follow the easy directions on the back of the pouch to make the dough. While you are waiting for the dough to rise, about an hour and a half, prepare the ?lling for the cinnamon buns.Pre-heat your oven to 350° F.Filling: 2/3 cup brown sugar 1-1/2 tbsp ground cinnamon 1/2 cup butter 1/2 cup dried raisins (optional) 1/2 cup chopped walnuts (optional) Melt the butter in the microwave or in a saucepan, stir in the brown sugar, cinnamon, raisins and walnuts. You do not need to let it bubble, just long enough for the butter to melt.Once the dough is ready, roll it out to 1/8 to 1/4 inch thickness as large as you can, try to keep it roughly rectangular in shape, about nine inches wide by twelve to fourteen inches long.Save some of the ?lling to put on the bottom of the pan.Pour the ?lling mixture onto the rolled out dough and spread it evenly over the surface, leaving a slight contour without ?lling.Starting on the shorter side, roll up the dough until you have a long log shaped piece of dough.Slice the roll into one-inch thick pieces, you should get nine large pieces.Pour the remainder of the ?lling on the bottom of a 9x9 inch baking pan and place each of the slices on top of the ?lling.Put the pan in the oven and bake for 20 to 25 minutes or until golden brown on the edges.Allow the buns to cool for ?ve to ten minutes before serving.Turn the buns over and place them on a plate, the gooey ?lling from the bottom now make a nice and sticky topping. However, if this is still not sweet enough for you, you can also add a frosting to top it all.Cream cheese frosting: 4 oz cream cheese, softened 3 tbsp butter, softened 3/4 cup icing sugar 1/2 tsp vanilla extract Combine the above ingredients using a fork or electric mixer until smooth and ?uffy.Spread over cinnamon rolls and serve. They are best served warm.I would love to hear your feedback and answer any pizza related questions and of course, if you would like to try Brad’s Gourmet Pizza dough mix, visit my website In loving memory of a dear husband, father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend who passed away on July 24, 2005.Absent is the face we loved and cherished, Quiet is the voice we loved to hear, But not far are the memories That ?ll our hearts with happiness.Always in our hearts.Xoxo.CECILIA, CAROL, SCOTT, TODD, DARREN, LAURA AND FAMILY When a loved one dies, a long list of things to do is often left behind. From dealing with service arrangements to sorting through their home, it can be overwhelming. If you’re responsible for taking care of a property left behind, consider these steps.Be prepared.Having important documents up to date and in a safe and accessible place will make managing the logistics of the estate much easier.Documents may include a will, mortgage payments, ?nancial information, insurance documents and even an estate plan.Sort it out. While having these documents organized will help logistically, personal belongings may be left out of the plan. When cleaning out the home of a loved one who has passed away, consider what is sentimental and valuable, and what is not.First think about how items can be incorporated into your current life. For example, you can repurpose old photographs to create a base for a serving tray, or turn antique silver spoons into a sentimental silver ring with the help of a jeweller. It can be useful to lean on friends and family who can help you be pragmatic about what’s worth keeping.Give yourself permission to donate the rest to charity.Seek help.Cleaning out a loved one’s home while grieving can be dif?cult, especially when faced with deciding what to keep and what to donate.Set a timeline to keep the process moving, but allow yourself to slow down or stop as needed and seek support from others.“Grief takes many forms and can affect individuals differently at any point during the grieving process,” says Mark Hooftman, funeral director at Arbor Memorial, a national funeral and cemetery services company.“Don’t hesitate to ask for help or offer to lend a hand to others who are in similar situations. It can make a world of difference.” While it may be a dif?cult or uncomfortable conversation to start with loved ones, having an estate plan in place will ease the pain of home cleanouts when the time comes.(www.newscanada.com) 3 ways to prepare for estate cleanouts The Record newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com Friday, July 24, 2020 Page 19 Church Services Presbyterian United AYER’S CLIFF, MAGOG, GEORGEVILLE Ayer’s Cliff – Magog - In this deal, declarer has to keep his trump suit under control. What should he do in four spades after West leads the heart ace and continues with the heart king? The auction was uncomfortable.South was understandably not willing to risk a nonforcing two-diamond rebid. Then North wondered if he should rebid three no-trump, but that would not have worked well here. When he chose three spades, South guessed well not to continue with four clubs, because ?ve clubs couldn’t have been made.In four spades, a greedy declarer ruffed the second heart and played trumps from the top.But when they split 4-2, not 3-3, South could not recover. He turned to clubs, but West ruffed the third round and played another heart.Declarer had to lose one spade, one heart and two diamonds. The correct line is to ruff at trick two, then to lead the other low spade from South’s hand. This concedes the trump trick he is always going to lose, and keeps a trump on the board to ruff a third round of hearts if that is forthcoming from a defender.Declarer will be able to draw trumps and run the clubs. Finally, did you spot West’s lethal defense? At trick two, he had to shift to a diamond. But who would ?nd that?
