(Concluded from Monday's Herald.) ‘There is tragedy in every line of the riverman’s history.Above Miller's Gap, you will find a heap of wreckage in the lee of a little island.Years ago, Que spring, when the floods were running high and the river full of logs, Crotch Lake, the reservoir of the Mississippi, governed by an immense dam, broke its bonds one night, and let loose thousands of tons of water down the doomed river.Slides, dams, and even mills went out before the flood.Ih King’s Lake, where the anxious rivermes were working by night to reap the profit of the freshet, fourteen men went to death in the dark carried away by the rush of waters, and of the fourteen, four were never four.The two great slides of the Ragged Chutes went out, and the debris may yet be seen, behind the island.It was & superstition among lumbermen that under that shapeless pile were the bodies of their drowned comrades.Even yet the inhabitants of the waterside for fifty miles, mark time and tide by the ‘year the Crotch Lake dam broke.” A chain of lakes begins above King's Chute, and exténds with short Intervals of rapids to the head waters of the river.Here is to be found scenery whigh, while lacking grandeur, is difficult to surpass for wild and rugged beauty.You may round’'a wooded point in any of these lakes, and surprise a deer of two hundred yards, These lakes, ranging from five to fourteen miles In length, were a thorn In the flesh of the drivers.To bring .the logs through *‘ was necessary to surround them with a boom, and then, either wait for a [fair wind if the lake was straight, or warp the booms down with a ‘cadge crib,” equipped with anchor and windlass, if the luke was full of curves and “narrows.” These “cadge cribs” are found everywhere on the upper river.The Mississippi- never boasted of but tvio tugs, one at Long Lake apd-.one ut Massanage.They were pr mitive in etyle «nd unsatisfactory in action, as may .latter, which 1s to be- found at Snider's Depot, @he old centre of supplies for th upper camps.At Farm Lake is the old farm house?where the great company maintained a staff to work the immense farm’ which supplied the lumbermen with provisions, : ) The Masganaga Rock is the Mecca of the Mississippi.About this majest'z pile centres a mass of history and myth.There are yet to be found on the cliff side weird characters made by the Indians, records of victory and defeat, painted in red hematite.Further on the point across the lake are found every year bones and all kinds of store ‘weapons, which goes to substantiate the legend that here took place a mighty struggle bettveen the Massanagas and their Iroquois -foemen, - —W.E.P.The mind ought sometimes to be amused, that it may the better return to thought and to itself.“On the Mississippi.” T mer drinking at the waterside at a distance | -udged from ‘the remains of the |.Colonial House, PHILLIPS SQUARE.HAT DEPT.Boys’ and Children’s Headgear Boys’ Derbys, new shapes, from Christy & Co., London, England;
