Youth can get a second dose after four weeks By Gordon Lambie Health Minister Christian Dubé shared on Thursday morning that the provincial public health authority has given the green light for youths aged 12 to 17 to move up the second dose of their COVID-19 vaccinations to as early as four weeks after their ?rst. With that announcement, all people eligible to receive a vaccine in the province can now be considered fully vaccinated within six weeks of their ?rst dose, taking into account a two-week period for the second dose to be considered effective. This stands in contrast to the province’s original system of 16 weeks between ?rst and second dose, which was later rolled back to eight, and then four. The Province of Quebec reported 65 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday, bringing the total number of people infected to 376,109, with 655 active cases. The total number of deaths linked to the virus so far increased by one, to reach MATTHEW MCCULLY By Matthew McCully Trouble with parallel parking? Can’t keep your big SUV between the yellow lines?Ask Marc-André Derail for some tips.He has been driving and maneuvering oversized cargo on the road for 11 years. The Record caught up with him as he was preparing to head to Joliette to deliver a 60,000-gallon tank built by Propar in Lennoxville.Surprisingly, he wasn’t hyperventilating into a paper bag, hesitating to turn on the ignition. The experienced driver is very relaxed behind the wheel, even with an 111,000-pound tank behind him.“It’s 40 metres bumper to bumber,” Derail said, Library Good Reads Review by Stephen Sheeran Those of you of a certain age, (ah, if I had a nickel for every time I have begun a review like that) may remember the Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance phenom in the 1970s.Robert M.Persig (R.I.P.) was turned down by countless publishers on the grounds that his work would never sell.Fortunately he persisted in his efforts, and Zen &c.turned out to be one of the best-selling pop philosophy books of all time.In it a trip, a motorcycle trip, becomes both substrate and metaphor for speculations about virtue, quality, meaning, attitudes towards life and sanity. Most striking is the way that Persig seizes upon various mundane events of the trip and transforms them, through observation and ratiocination, into profound questions about how we know things, and how we act with this knowledge. The most recent work by Eric Weiner (rhymes with miner) follows in Persig’s tracks, though Weiner’s preferred means of transportation is either on foot or by train. The full title—The Socrates Express: In Search of Life Lessons from Dead Philosophers (published in 2020) —adumbrates well the format and content.Weiner chooses fourteen philosophers and fourteen related railroad trips to “frame” a discussion of their ideas. For example, the ?rst chapter relates a 7:07 a.m.trauma in an Amtrak sleeper car “somewhere in North Dakota”.Weiner—who by all accounts appears to like his sleep—has just weathered a night of being thrown about in his sleeping cabin and is being roused by a chirpy coffee attendant. This leads him to speculate about the virtues of getting up versus not getting up, all the while noting that Marcus Aurelius was a late riser yet that didn’t prevent him from running the Roman Empire.Getting-up-vs.-not-getting-up leads into a brief survey of other philosophers’ matutinal rising habits, and then to a speculation on duty and motivation, then to a re?ection on death and suicide (Weiner freely acknowledges a melancholic streak in his psyche!), and then to a broader examination of Marcus Aurelius’s life and his Meditations. Here and throughout, Weiner impresses upon the reader that the human condition remains remarkably constant.Aurelius, in the midst of wars, plagues, and problems of empire, struggles with his personal demons, embracing a stoical philosophy, always urging himself to be better, to be more dutiful, to be more human. For subsequent chapters/ philosophers the same template is applied, and it soon becomes evident that, although this is a book about timeless books, it is very much a book for our times. The travelling and research for Socrates Express were largely done before the pandemic, but the insights it provides are invaluable as we look back on the last year and a half of privations.Deprived of our dizzying round of normal routines—shopping, socializing, travelling, learning, teaching—we have been obliged to sit back and, in many cases, re?ect upon the inherent value and meaning of what we do.As Weiner says (quoting Maurice Riseling), “Sooner or later, life makes philosophers of us all”.In this context, Weiner’s whimsical tour of fourteen philosophies provides interesting starting points for re?ection. We learn, among other things, how to wonder like Socrates, how to walk like Rousseau, how to see like Thoreau, then, later, how to listen like Schopenhauer, how to cope like Epictetus, how to grow old like Beauvoir, and how to die like Montaigne. Now, one would be justi?ed in expecting that such a cursory treatment would run the risk of being (a) bubble-gummish (b) formulaic or (c) boring. But Weiner is like an incredibly insightful magpie: he presents an intriguing amount of historical minutiae, to the extent that we are able to get a sense of the living, breathing, and all-too-human characters of these great thinkers.Like Persig, he links displacement with contemplation. He is quick to note that the way we chose to move about shapes our perceptions and our thoughts. So, he attempts literally to walk in the footsteps of his subjects—to visit on foot the precise locations of the Athenian p h i l o s o p h i c a l schools founded by Epicurus and Socrates, to stand in front of the grave site of Simone Weil, to enter the cafés frequented by Simone de Beauvoir, to walk the creaking ?oorboards of the Imperial Palace in Kyoto where the 10th-century Japanese courtier Sei Shonagon spent most of her life. This legwork gives rise to endless engagement—He picks up the philosophers’ ideas and runs with them, turning them over, dissecting them, savouring them to see what relevance they might have in a modern context. This is the true excitement of The Socrates Express, that, paradoxically, just as the philosophers are brought vividly to life their ideas are shown to transcend their particular lives, their historical and social contexts.Of course, our modern times take a beating. In his analyses he constantly explores dualities—between information and knowledge, knowledge and wisdom, curiosity and wonder, happiness and meaning, seeing and attending, perception and truth, truth and beauty—and our contemporary mores are routinely measured in the balance and found wanting. Not to put too ?ne a point on it, modern society comes across as a thoroughly caffeine-fuelled, stuff-obsessed, gizmo-distracted, over-coddled, over- mediated, ethically, morally and spiritually bankrupt, trivial, feckless, and nugatory enterprise.(Don’t get me and Eric started!) Interesting to note is that most of these thinkers or philosophers— the ones who had such a dramatic in?uence on shaping our ideas—are mis?ts, outcasts, or oddballs. One gets the impression that if they did make an appearance in our modern times they would be medicated, re-educated, or imprisoned for the common good. For the curious, the other philosophers, apart from those already mentioned, are Gandhi, Confucius, and Nietzsche Several of Eric Weiner’s books are available via interlibrary loan. All aboard!!! have been administered outside Québec, this makes for a total of 9,782,128 doses received by Quebecers so far, representing ?rst-dose coverage in 72.3 per cent of the total population, and adequate noticed a signi?cant increase in fraud cases throughout the Eastern Townships, and Quebec, as scammers continue to target the elderly population.RPM Lieutenant Carl Pépin told The Record that elderly folk are receiving pressure calls.A scammer will try to convince a victim that their bank account has been compromised, and that the only way to deal with the situation is by handing over their personal information.“We have two cases in Magog and two more attempts were documented, and while talking to those elderly people, (scammers) are obtaining the PIN of the card and we want to remind the people that no institution will ever ask for your PIN when they contact you by phone,” he said.According to Pépin, one of the victims lost $5,800.The scammer creates a sense of urgency, he explained, and they also tell their targets that they need to deposit their bank cards in an envelope and place it in the mailbox, where someone from Canada Post will pick it up.The scammer sends an accomplice to pick up the card a few minutes later, Pépin continued, it all happens very fast. The lieutenant believes that in these latest fraud cases, scammers are using a phone list because they seem to have access to everyone’s address. He added that it is important to remind citizens to never hand over personal information over the phone or internet. If people are suspicious about a phone call, then the best thing to do is contact a family member right away, or the police. But these situations continue to happen.“I don’t know, we’re advertising it every time we can and for some reason some people always fall into it, so we’re trying to make advertisements to be careful, but elderly people are easy to target, they are scared, they trust everyone on the phone,” said Pépin. When it comes to internet scams, it is nearly impossible for local police to track down the perpetrator. The fraud is usually being committed overseas, Pépin said, so it is unlikely police will able to recover lost money, or make any arrests. However, he is con?dent police will be able to handle the developing fraud situation in Quebec. This is not just a case for the RPM, Pépin noted, it has also been given to the investigators from the Sûreté du Québec (SQ), as well as other smaller police forces in the province.“They have an accomplice that is picking up the card here in Quebec so eventually we’ll end up putting our hands on somebody,” he said.“I don’t know if we’ll ever get the money back, but we have good hope that the investigation will come to something, someday.” FADOQ, a seniors’ organization that represents 550,000 members across Canada, helps elderly folk understand fraud and how to deal with scammers.FADOQ Estrie President Paul Legault said in a phone interview that they run a program called Aîné-Avisé.The program is held annually, and there are about 14 to 15 sessions every year.Legault said normally they split people up into small groups of 10 to 15 people in order to make the sessions more comfortable. It also encourages people to ask more questions.“We offer it every year, and during Covid we offered it virtually, but it was less popular. We’re going to make it in person again starting in October and we’re going to invite people to subscribe to our seminar,” said Legault.FADOQ Estrie sends out weekly newsletters, as well, informing its members of the current fraud situation in Quebec. The scammers are targeting seniors because they are more vulnerable, especially during Covid, he said, as everyone was lonely and isolated. The program is run by a group of volunteers, and they also get SQ police of?cers to come in as guest speakers. If they get a hydro or MasterCard bill, Legault continued, they need to erase any personal information, like their address. They can also ?ip the script during a phone call.“When we talk over the phone, take their contact information, call them back and see whether it is actually someone from the institution they say they are from,” said Legault. He added that many people are embarrassed to share their stories about fraud. But FADOQ makes an effort to create a safe environment for victims. The purpose is to inform people how to protect themselves. No one is there to judge people, he said, it is about helping others.“They think we are going to judge, but we tell them we don’t.It can happen to anyone, and it’s important to know that we can protect each other if we work together,” said Legault, adding that he hopes to see more people sign up to the program.Winter doesn’t faze him much, but Derail said when roads are icy it’s not a fun ride. The wheels on the back of the trailer turn separately, so when they end up on ice they can sometimes have a mind of their own.Transporting oversized cargo requires a permit.Derail said he has to follow the route laid out by the MTQ.Most times it’s ?ne, but Derail said on a few occasions he has been in some tight situations where cargo couldn’t make a turn.Derail waited on the side of Winder Street yesterday for his two driving escorts to arrive. One to drive in front, the other behind the cargo to make sure other vehicles keep a safe distance. Then they made a plan to get the tank over the Huntingville bridge.Derail said he would drive past the bridge and back over it.With the rear wheels able to turn, it was much easier to make the turn onto the 147.Once he hits the open road, Derail said he can travel at up to 100 km/h with the tank.Make way CONT’D FROM PAGE 1 PRINTED AND DISTRIBUTED BY PRESSREADER PressReader.com +1 604 278 4604 ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL Lennoxville’s Optimist Park is largely out of service for the summer as a part of an effort to restore the playing surface of the sports ?eld.According to Christopher Fowlis, Manager of Bishop’s athletic facilities, the work is part of an effort to counteract problems stemming from the last major ?ood but also a look towards returning the space to more regular use.“Before coulter ?eld was built, our rugby and lacrosse teams were playing there on a regular basis,” Fowlis said, noting that rather than have the ?eld be a competition space, the hope is to make it a focal point for intermural sports and club activities. Before that can happen, however, the play surface itself needs to be restored.“There have been problems with the ?eld ever since the last major ?ood,” the facilities manager said.“We had too much silt on it and the grass wasn’t coming back properly.” After several years of partial attempts to re-seed, Fowlis said that the university has opted to work together in a more intensive way to revitalize the grass.“The reason why there is a fence on it is because people were still using it after the ?eld was closed,” he said, pointing out that the continued use and the lack of signi?cant rain so far over the spring and summer has made the work a little bit more complicated than expected.“It hasn’t started off too well.” Due to limitations on the amount of fence available to close off the space, Fowlis said that only the most hard-hit parts of the ?eld have been closed off, but that still more-or-less renders the space unusable to the ultimate frisbee and rugby groups that have been in the habit of playing in the park in summers past.“We were hoping to be done for the beginning of September but now it’s looking more like maybe mid-September,” he said.“The fence will be there for the summer: we have to protect the ?eld and our investment.“The plan is to keep it in better shape from now on,” Fowlis added.GORDON LAMBIE Operation Backpack team members Debbie Harrison, Daphne Nelson and Cheryl Graham prepping supplies for 30 Lennoxville increasing surveillance on Quebec roadways and waterways over the next two weeks in time with the province’s annual construction holiday. From July 16 to August 1, travellers should keep their eyes out for of?cers out on the roads, lakes, and trails as a part of the creatively named, “opération vacances de la construction.” Operating under the theme, “safety doesn’t take a vacation,” the SQ notes that the purpose of this operation is to remind all vacationers that they must apply the rules of road and recreation safety throughout the year, even when they are on vacation, and must adopt appropriate behaviours to ensure their safety and that of others.According to a press release issued by the provincial police force, the construction holiday period is the time of year when the number of fatal collisions or collisions causing injury is the highest.During last year’s holiday, eight people lost their lives in collisions in the territory served by the Sûreté du Québec.A contributing risk lies in the fact that approximately one third of Quebecers take the vacations during this period, which results in a considerable increase in travel on the road network.Due to this year’s pandemic conditions, an even greater amount of traf?c is expected, considering that most Quebecers will spend their vacations in the province. Thus, police presence will be increased on the roads, but also on the trails and on bodies of water to ensure compliance with the regulations. In this regard, the Sûreté du Québec invites vacationers to practice their favourite recreational activities in a safe manner. It is important to remember that helmets must be worn by all-terrain vehicle enthusiasts and that it is strongly recommended that personal ?otation devices be worn at all times when boating.Information on speci?c operations to be carried out by the SQ over the course of this two-week period will be shared through the police force’s Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram accounts.RECORD ARCHIVES/ GORDON LAMBIE Workers reminded to be careful around powerlines Record Staff Quebec’s workplace health and safety board, the CNESST, is reminding the public that in recent years, several serious and fatal accidents have occurred throughout Québec near live overhead power lines.Whether it is on construction sites when raising structures, renovating roofs, or in the context of any other task that requires working at height, workers may be required to perform work near live overhead power lines. The pruning and felling of trees, maintenance of streetlights or billboards, delivery of materials and concrete work are also risky tasks. As a part of their warning, the CNESST is issuing a call for vigilance and would like to remind workers and employers of the importance of respecting the minimum approach distances when working near a live overhead power line.In addition to being potentially fatal, being too close to overhead powerlines is one of the CNESST’s zero-tolerance dangers and can be cause for serious consequences in the context of inspection or oversight.More importantly, however, respecting the minimum approach distances to an overhead power line can prevent serious burns, falls, or even electrocution.Measures must therefore be put in place by the employer to ensure the safety of workers Among the recommended prevention measures listed by the health and safety organization are adaptation of workplace practices to avoid anyone having to pass within three metres of an electrical line of more than 750v and less than 125Kv, or the appropriate safe distance for lines of other levels.Where a load, scaffold, piece of machinery or person is likely to be in the vicinity of a power line inside of the minimum recommended distance, the employer shall ensure that one of the following preventive measures is applied: - the power line is turned off - a written agreement is established with the power company, such as Hydro Quebec, on the safety measures to be taken and this agreement is made available to employees, - the rolling and deployable equipment used shall be equipped with a range limiting device to ensure that the minimum approach distances are maintained.Depending on the tasks to be performed, one or both of the following measures must be taken by the employer to ensure the safety of the worker: - when the work takes place on a construction site, inform the CNESST in advance that work will be carried out near a powerline.- for work performed near low- voltage power lines (750 volts or less), there must be insulation between the worker and the uninsulated live parts.Only a contractor authorized under a contract or agreement with an electrical utility may perform work within three metres of a medium voltage electrical system.A copy of the contract or agreement must be available at the work site.As there is zero tolerance, work near live power lines must be supervised. If the required preventive measures are not taken, the employer may be subject to a work stoppage and criminal proceedings.CNESST In July of 2019, 60 year old André L’Heureux was killed after his truck government’s plan to make a vaccine passport mandatory for accessing gyms, concerts, bars, team sports, festivals, and other places and events.I am not opposed to vaccines, in fact I’ve received my ?rst dose and plan on getting my second one as soon as possible, but I do not think that it is ethical or constitutional for the government to mandate vaccines on citizens.Besides, why force people to get vaccinated when over 70 per cent of the population in Quebec has already received at least one dose? While I do understand that there is still space for improvement, particularly among the younger generation, I believe that the government should try other means before making vaccines mandatory.Personally, I think that the Quebec government should use public health messages to spread awareness of the importance of being vaccinated. My Take: By Taylor McClure The vaccine passport is causing a stir; it’s easy to understand why.The vaccine passport will be an of?cial document so that in the case of a COVID-19 surge, those that are vaccinated can access non-essential services and travel.Personally, I see this is a manoeuvre on part of the government to basically try to force people into getting the vaccine. This does not sit right with me.While I understand the intention, it’s to protect citizens, ?nding every loophole possible to basically say ‘you don’t need to get the vaccine, but…’ defeats the purpose of constitutional rights. If someone doesn’t want to put medicine made in a lab in a short period of time in their bodies, they should not be made to feel like they have to.France is currently in ?ames over this issue; it’s one that needs to be approached carefully. My Take: By Gordon Lambie Quebec’s vaccine passport is a teaser trailer right now. It’s like when ?lm companies put out an ad for an upcoming ?lm that is just the name of the movie in stylized letters and the briefest glimpse of what it might be about.Audiences are left to speculate based on what they already know from the novel of the same name, or ?ll in the blank from their own imaginations. At the moment, the government of Quebec describes the COVID-19 vaccination passport as something that will be an of?cial document in the future (i.e.it doesn’t exist yet). They offer a couple of ‘probablys’ and ‘maybes’ before stating, that “how it will be used will depend on changes in the epidemiological situation and on vaccine coverage in Québec.” At the very least, we know that the movie catchphrase of 2020-21 continues to be “we’ll see.” My Take: By Michael Boriero My Take: By Matthew McCully I have no problem with vaccine passports.I am aware that this will be an unpopular initiative from the Quebec government, but I think it is a necessary one.We need more people to get vaccinated. The numbers are not strong enough yet.And if it is not already abundantly clear, this is our only sure-?re way out of the pandemic. There are too many vaccine-hesitant people out there. And, unfortunately, this might be the only way to convince them to ?nally take the plunge — or jab.Quebec has said that the passports will only be used in the event of another wave, or in COVID-19 hot zones, limiting non-essential services to the fully-vaccinated.I don’t see anything wrong with that logic. At least for now.Needless to say, I’m sure there will be a lengthy debate over this topic. Here are a few things to consider about vaccine passports.First of all, they are an idea ?oated by the government.Nothing is set in stone, and nothing will be implemented unless there is another surge of COVID-19 cases in the province. And I don’t know if you noticed, but government’s often drop a little nugget of information for no other reason than to test the waters and gauge public opinion. So even if vaccine passports become a thing, they won’t be anything like the thing everyone is talking about right now.Something else to consider is that a vaccine passport cannot and will not prevent anyone from moving freely in public. We have sheer ignorance to blame for that.If there is anything humanity has proven throughout history, it’s that we can trump even the greatest of accomplishments by shooting ourselves in the foot.PRINTED AND newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com Friday, July 16, 2021 Page 7 EDITORIAL There has been a recent increase in anti-vaccination conspiracy theories, misinformation campaigns and protests in various countries. The inherent racism of anti-vaxx movements By Paula Larsson Doctoral Student, Centre for the History of Science, Medicine, and Technology, University of Oxford We are currently experiencing a worldwide vaccination effort that’s being impeded by rising pockets of anti-vaccination sentiment. There has been a recent increase in anti-vaccination conspiracy theories, misinformation campaigns and protests in various countries. And while many accuse anti-vaxxers of a sel?sh disdain for the health and safety of others, there is a underlying aspect of these movements that needs to be more widely recognized.Vaccine resistance movements have always been led by white, middle-class voices and promoted by structures of racial inequality.Racist language to discredit vaccination The intrinsic racism of anti- vaccination movements began with their historical origin in the 19th century.Inoculation originally referred to the older form of vaccination, where pus was taken from the pustule of someone with a mild form of smallpox and purposely scratched into the arm of a healthy person. This would ideally convey a mild form of the disease and thereby protect the recipient from more deadly forms. This type of inoculation had its foundation in a number of non- western cultures before it was incorporated into western medical practice.Indeed, inoculation was practised in China for centuries before it made its way to Europe, as well as in the Middle East and North Africa. Its use in North America was initiated by the knowledge of an enslaved man, Onesimus, who famously taught the procedure to puritan minister Cotton Mather during a smallpox outbreak in the early 18th century. These non-western origins fuelled some anti-vaccination criticisms during the 19th century.Opponents to the practice declared it a “?lthy, useless and dangerous rite” akin to using the “charms and incantations of an African savage.” By the turn of the 20th century, racialized language began to appear in anti-vaccination dialogues which, on the surface, had little to do with race. These racial slurs served the purposes of anti-vaccinationists who sought to discredit the practice. One of the most potent examples of this was in 1920, when vocal anti- vaccination writer Charles Higgins published a book against vaccination.Throughout this work he consistently referred to vaccination as a “savage rite” performed by “the Medicine Man” on helpless innocent children.Medical freedom, white freedom The racialized language utilized by these early anti-vaxxers was all the more potent when weaponized by white leaders of anti-vaccination leagues (or organizations).Between 1860 and 1920, numerous anti-vaxx leagues were founded in Britain, the United States and Canada. One of their main arguments was that compulsory enforcement was a “tyrannical interference with the rightful liberties of the people,” an accusation often levelled at health of?cials attempting to increase vaccine uptake in the general public. These people used their social standing to loudly condemn perceived limitations of their rights, while blindly ignoring the systemic absence of the same freedoms for racialized and low-income communities. In North America, the freedom to choose vaccination was already de?ned by racial identity in many places.Throughout this period, Indigenous children in Canada were forced to attend residential schools, where vaccination was either implemented or ignored at the will of federal or school of?cials, with little regard for parental or individual choice. On the West Coast, civic public health of?cials actively enforced compulsory vaccination on Asian communities based on racial pro?ling during disease outbreaks. In 1900, city health of?cials in San Francisco issued mandatory plague vaccination orders for all Chinese individuals after a few cases of plague were found in the city.American writer Harriet A.Washington has vividly demonstrated how Black communities were frequently enrolled in medical research trials for testing new medical treatments and vaccines, often without their knowledge or consent.Yet the medical oppression of nonwhite communities was ignored by anti-vaccination leaders, who instead used their platforms to retain the medical freedoms of dominant white communities.Today: Anti-vaxx targeting of racialized people In present times, the leaders of anti-vaccination movements are still predominantly white, with many receiving millions in revenue from their activities.More concerning is that they have begun to deliberately target racialized communities with anti-vaccine disinformation and propaganda.Recognizing the societal factors that have eroded trust in medical institutions, anti-vaxxers are attempting to direct this distrust to bene?t their own cause.Through their actions, anti-vaxxers deliberately seek to increase the risk of infection in already vulnerable populations. We saw this in 2017 after an outbreak of measles in Minnesota among the Somali-American community in Minneapolis.Anti-vaxxers staged two public meetings in the community, encouraging parents to avoid vaccination and pushed the false claim that the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine is linked to rising rates of autism. The result was a drastic reduction in MMR vaccination uptake between 2004 and 2014 — dropping from 92 per cent to 42 per cent — and one of the largest measles outbreaks in the state in three decades.Deliberate targeting has been ampli?ed even further this year in the attempt to discredit COVID-19 vaccines. The prominent anti-vaccine organization Children’s Health Defense recently released a ?lm aimed at fuelling distrust in vaccination among Black Americans.Anti-vaccination leaders have also begun to co-opt narratives of persecution and suffering for their own purposes.Last month, a Washington state of?cial wore a yellow Star of David to protest vaccine mandates, while prominent anti-vaccine voice, Naomi Wolf, was scheduled to headline a fundraiser for “liberation” from vaccine mandates on Juneteenth. It’s not the white, middle- and upper- class anti-vaccination leaders who suffer most from a diminished herd immunity and increased prevalence of vaccine-preventable illnesses.Such individuals are generally protected by the same social and racial privileges that have historically enabled them to continuously gain a large following. In the end, the individuals who bear the brunt of an increased burden of disease are those from historically vulnerable communities whose concerns continue to be co-opted and overshadowed by anti-vaccination activists.DEAR EDITOR, As a citizen I’m amazed how ignorant and rude people have become. Also, no respect for the elderly.I had moved from my home to a seniors’ residence.I had mailed out via Canada Post many address changes and I always requested to con?rm the change by return mail. That was approximately two-and-a-half months ago.So far, no response from anyone.Big businesses, or just managers? They brag about customer Record Since March 2020, people in the Eastern Townships have had very few opportunities to participate in arts and cultural events due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, after being cancelled in July last year, the Festival des Arts is back this weekend in Georgeville and Fitchbay, presenting its 18th edition on Saturday, July 17 until Sunday, July 25, 2021.Bright and colourful panels will clearly display the routes that visitors can follow to reach both sites throughout the 20-km circuit which follows the picturesque country roads, mountains and lakes in Stanstead Township. This year, visitors can expect to see the work of a talented mix of artists from the region who will be presenting art of all different mediums such as oil, acrylic and pastel paintings, photographs, stone sculptures, hand-dyed silk scarves, jewelry, prints, books, woodwork, and stained glass.Due to the length of time needed to organize such a large event, Danielle Hudon, the president of the Association des Artistes de Georgeville – Fitchbay, said that they had to start organizing before it was even con?rmed that they could have the festival this year.“Thanks to an extraordinary team of volunteers, the Festival des Arts is scheduled to bounce back from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, while still following all the governmental health measures that apply in the Eastern Townships,” said Hudon.Hudon also explained that due to Canada’s slow rollout of vaccines earlier this year, many of the artists feared that they would not be fully vaccinated in time for the festival and did not want to take the risk.“The number of artists presenting their art at the festival is down from 40 before the pandemic to 16 this year,” stated Hudon.Carla Straessle, a local metalsmith and jewelry designer from Georgeville, known for her unique statement jewelry in sterling silver, gold, and steel with natural gemstones, is one of the artists who will be presenting her work at the festival this year. This will be her ?fth time participating in the Festival des Arts, and this year, Straessle said that they are incorporating a new idea in hopes of attracting more visitors to the event.According to Straessle, “each day, one person from each site will receive a $25 gift card to spend at the festival.” Visitors will get the chance to win by being the ?rst to arrive at the either location, namely the Murray Memorial Centre in Georgeville or the Town Hall in Fitch Bay.Prior to the pandemic, the 10-day festival attracted anywhere between 4000 and 6000 art enthusiasts, collectors, tourists, and connoisseurs from near and far to the beautiful Canton de Stanstead. This year, while the expected turnout of the festival is uncertain, the goal is that it is busy each day while it’s open from 10 a.m.to 5 p.m.CARLA STRAESSLE Georgeville artist Carla Straessle wearing the Keum Boo necklace she made. The Memphremagog circuit des arts massive that one day you will become a musician too. This is exactly what happened to Jean Proulx, who most people will remember as a member of the band Moonshine.Jean Proulx is a native of Sherbrooke. He grew up in a house situated on the corner of King Street and Queen Blvd.He had a happy childhood, and it was around the age of nine that he began to have a serious interest in music and began to learn an instrument.“On my father’s side of the family all the uncles and aunts played an instrument. Each of our family gatherings was an occasion to get the instruments out for a jam session and a musical party” said Proulx in a recent interview.“I was nine when I started learning violin and practicing with my father. He loved to play and soon I started being able to accompany him on the guitar as well.My love of music de?nitely comes from my family. All of them had a strong in?uence in my wanting to learn how to play music. And I have a brother who plays violin with Imusici International” explained the musician. For a few years he honed his skills on violin and guitar, hoping to eventually play in a band.He was 17 when he played with his ?rst group. They started playing in church halls where people paid 25 cents at the door to hear them perform.“I recall being very nervous but things went well, he recalled.“As we got a little older and of age, we were ?nally allowed to play the local bar circuit. Our ?rst gig was at the 4 Corners in Magog, but soon we played at the Magog Union Hotel, the Auberge des Pins in Deauville, just to name a few.Our band was named the Tavertone.” After his stint with that ?rst band came the group The Flinstones, which included Andre Moffat, Robert St- Jacques and Yves Lamontagne. They played commercial music and, like so many bands at the time, decided to bleach their hair and coloured them a ?ashy shade of blue.It was a pretty good way to get noticed. They were young and having fun. Most of country music fans have known Jean Proulx as a bass player but this is not how it began. The story is that, after playing guitar for a while, one day someone stole his guitar. He decided to buy a bass instead and give it a try.He liked it so from that time on, he always played bass.To this day, he still plays his violin, although he never did play the instrument in a band. After The Flinstones folded, Proulx met William Mullin and country music.Around 1978, the all-time star drummer Julo Plourde decided to form his own band including Jean Proulx on bass, Luc Lauzon on guitar and would soon feature William Mullin on lead vocal.“Proulx was a great bass player and vocalist.I enjoyed playing with him and I have a lot of respect for him.We were just guitar, bass, drum, and me as a singer, so we pushed hard on vocals. The name of the band was Moonshine” Mullin said of his years of playing with Proulx. It really started when they were asked to replace a band for a couple of weeks at The Auberge, on King East. This two-week gig turned out to be the chance needed to make Moonshine a band to reckon’ with. The gig that was supposed to last two weekends ended up lasting for seven months in a row. This is where they started building a reputation and gathering a huge following. What made them so special was the members’ ability to provide great harmonies allowing a much better delivery of their cover songs. To focus on that was a great idea. They worked hard to build their show on COURTESY CONT’D ON PAGE 10 PRINTED AND DISTRIBUTED BY PRESSREADER groups on the American Country Music Charts, to be able to offer comparable achievement was a de?nite plus for a local band who wanted to reach a higher level of quality in the execution of the covers.“We started doing a lot of Alabama, Exile, Oak Ridge Boys, because we had a very strong 3 part harmony and we mixed that with some CCR and other great groups of the time.Today, the group Alabama is still one of my favorites” said Proulx, who is also a diehard fan of Merle Haggard.“After that extended gig, Mullin and the drummer went on and booked the band in six different bars which meant work every weekend (two or three nights) for a whole year” he said of this turn of events.A great deal of attention was given to the vocals and harmonies, but the instrumentation wasn’t neglected for all that.Every member of the band was an accomplished musician totally dedicated to precision.Soon they became the most sought-after band in the region, and they probably would have been able to play more if it wasn’t that they all had daytime jobs.Back then of course, bars were very busy and the ‘in place’ to go two to three nights a week.“For the next twelve plus years we played every weekend. It was quite a ride and we had fun in the good old days playing for jam packed houses” said Proulx who ?nds that the bar scene has changed a lot since.Proulx married and had three kids (two boys and one girl) with his wife Pauline who always supported his music.Only their son Pierre followed in his footsteps. He plays in an Ozzy Osbourne tribute band. Both his parents were so thrilled to see him perform last year at The Granada, in Sherbrooke. The bassman played with many local musicians through his career. To list all the who and where would require a lot of work to make sure to not forget anything.Proulx reminisced about playing at the Club Sportif with talented keyboardist Raymond St-Laurent for a while. He also talked about the good old days when Moonshine played at The Shady Crest in Ayer’s Cliff. This was a very popular venue on Sunday afternoons. If Proulx doesn’t do bars anymore, he still ?nds a lot of pleasure to play for special events or to just spend a lot of time keeping his dexterity on the violin. He also loves reading about history in general, which fascinates him.If he had to do it all over again, there’s no doubt he would do it.He said he made many good friends playing music and met a lot of interesting people. The challenge of constantly learning new tunes and new songs was something he liked to do.He still has a fondness for country music and said that he also loves blues music of the 1970’s.Proulx is an accomplished musician/singer.Wouldn’t you just love to see a Part 2 Last month we looked at rolling pins, pizza pans and pizza peels, today I would like to expound on parchment paper, pizza cutters and pizza ovens.Parchment paper Many videos show the pizzaiolo using ?our or semolina to heavily dust the working surface so that the pizza can be placed on a pizza peel.I prefer to use parchment paper for several reasons.Firstly, it is much easier to keep the pizza’s shape while conveying it to the tray or oven and requires less dusting, hence your dough will remain ?uf?er.Semolina will not incorporate into the dough and will not add density or remove the humidity from the dough.Secondly, the parchment paper allows for even baking and the pizza dough to breathe, so that your crust will be crisp rather than soggy as it would on tin foil.Thirdly, it makes for easy cleaning.Without it, your pizza crust may stick to the pan.Pizza cutters While a knife will work to cut a pizza into slices, it tends to be messy, and the ingredients will separate from the bottom crust. There are three types of cutters that I recommend.Pizza wheels, rocker cutters and pizza scissors.Probably every homemade pizza enthusiast owns a pizza wheel cutter, you can ?nd them in just every kitchen supply shop, in many grocery stores and sometimes hardware stores. They are everywhere.I ?nd that the best technique is to lift and roll.Placing the wheel in the centre of the pizza, roll out to the edge, lift and roll in the opposite direction from the centre.Lifting and rolling will help keep your toppings from sliding.Rocker cutters are one of my favourites, they are large enough and have a longer blade.Starting from one outer crust you can just rock it to the other side, no sliding toppings. The blade is very sharp and with the right amount of pressure you can slice the pizza in one pass. Some people like the pizza scissors, they have long blades and angled in in such a way that it makes it easy to cut the pizza as easily as a piece of paper. Some pizza scissors even have a built-in pie server for your convenience.Ovens Not all of us are lucky enough to have a pizza oven, myself included. The advantage of using a wood ?red or propane pizza oven is how hot they become. The wood ?red oven produces a better heat, but it takes much longer to get the heat up and it takes a long time for the oven to cool down.If you can get the heat up to 900 degrees, your pizza will bake in about ninety seconds. The crust will be crispy and heavenly.Unless you can build your own, a pizza oven can set you back anywhere from two to ten thousand dollars. But for those of us who do not have one, there are still numerous options.Last summer I wrote about how to barbecue pizza. Most barbecues will go up to at least 700 degrees and your pizza will take only four to ?ve minutes to bake. You will need a pizza stone and a pizza peel though.I suggest elevating the pizza stone off the grill with a few bricks to help improve air circulation and so that the pizza stone does not come into direct contact with the ?ame.Traditional or convection ovens will heat up to 500 degrees, then your pizza will take eight to ten minutes to bake.If you put a few pizza stones on the bottom grill, you may be able to increase the overall heat by ten percent or so, allowing you to reduce the baking time.If you bake more than one pizza at a time, you may need to add a few more minutes per pizza to the bake time. You may have to rotate the pizzas to get a more evenly baked crust in a traditional, non-convection oven. Many people only have a toaster oven, and it is still possible to make great pizza. These reach a maximum of 450 degrees, the baking time for a twelve-inch pizza will jump to twelve to ?fteen minutes.Brad’s Gourmet is here to serve the community for all things pizza related.Visit us from Tuesday to Saturday at 127 Queen St., in Lennoxville. We are looking forward to meeting you! clothes. They can also be a great way to sanitize bacteria and other illness-causing germs in unexpected places.Try steaming pet beds, mattresses and the interior of your car; the hot steam will blast away germs and dust mites, and it can even help freshen upholstered surfaces that are normally impossible to clean.John Lutzmann 1933-2021 At Magog Hospital in Magog, QC on Wednesday July 7, at the marriage, and we have a child together.A few months ago, she started accusing me of distancing myself from her.I was confused by this, as I truly hadn’t intended to.I thought everything had been going OK.Well, it turns out that she was the one trying to distance herself. She told me last month that she wants to take some time apart to ?gure out if she still wants to be with me.I’ve tried talking to her about it to ?nd out why she wants space. She’s given me a variety of different reasons.I’ve heard her out, acknowledged her concerns and offered solutions - but they’re never enough. She just comes up with more excuses. She has also mentioned that men ?irt with her at work and she enjoys the attention. She says she’s still making up her mind about our marriage, but I feel like I can read the writing on the wall and know where this is headed.I’m absolutely heartbroken.Any advice you could offer would be absolutely welcome.- So Very Lost Dear Lost: Marriages can survive almost anything if both partners are willing to put in the work. But your wife isn’t meeting you halfway, or even part of the way.In fact, she seems intent on heading the opposite direction.Keep focusing on what you can control, and if she ultimately decides she wants out, know that you did all you could.By the sound of it, you’re a loving, caring partner, and if your wife can’t appreciate that, someone else will, down the line. But I am sorry for your heartache in the meantime.Dear Annie: I am a 49-year-old woman, and my youngest brother is 45.Our mom passed away very young.I was 8; he was 4.Our dad was an auto factory worker who spent long days working hard to support ?ve kids on his own.A lot of our household duties fell on my shoulders.I was not the oldest, but I guess you could say I was the only one that cared about the “true” meaning of family. My dad said he knew that he could always count on me.Because of this, my youngest brother has always looked at me kind of like a mom.Except lately, his behavior has changed, and he only seems to want me around or even care about me when he needs money.I am a union asphalt road worker, and although I make a great wage, I don’t want to just give it away. But when I say no, he ?ips out and tells me he will be hungry and it’s my fault.I don’t want my brother hungry, so I give him food instead of money, but it’s never enough.Any suggestions?- Brother’s Keeper Dear Brother’s Keeper: Never do for others what they can just as easily do for themselves. The best way to truly help your brother in the long term is to quit “helping” him in these surface-level ways now. He’s an adult and capable of caring for himself.By detaching with love, you’ll give him the chance to ?nd that out.“Ask Me Anything: A Year of Advice From Dear Annie” is out now! or within one hour if the house is hot or foods have been outdoors. The refrigerator should maintain a temperature of 40 F or lower and freezers at least 0 F.These guidelines are just the tip of the iceberg.Learn more about safe food handling at www.nutrition.gov/topics/food-safety/ safe-food-preparation.(Metro Creative) Summer Daze Word Search Beach Camping Coastal Cooling Fan Hammock Hazy Hot Lazy Outdoors Recreation Seaside Shady Summer Sunshine Suntan Sweating Swimming Swimsuit Temperature Towel Travel Umbrella Vacation L E N N O X V I L L E P L U M B I N G .Domestic repairs and water reiners.Call Norman Walker at 819-563-1491.LOOKING FOR ADVANCED or professional pianist, violinist, and cellist to meet to play great repertoire with the lute.Possible concerts.Email with subject ‘Music’ to douglasnadler62@ gmail.com PRINTED AND DISTRIBUTED BY PRESSREADER PressReader.com +1 604 278 4604 ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY COPYRIGHT AND PROTECTED BY APPLICABLE LAW The Record newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com Friday, July 16, 2021 Page 23 Your Birthday SUNDAY, JULY 18, 2021 Embrace the world with open arms.Opportunities are within reach; all you have to do is be receptive, use your imagination and take matters into your own hands.Get out and network.Trust in your intuition and your ability to stand out from the pack CANCER (June 21-July 22) - At the bridge table, if you are defending against a three-level contract, you get hungry when you have four tricks in, wondering from where that ?nal course - winner- will come.On today’s deal, South was in three spades. After West led the club ace, how did the defenders collect ?ve tricks? When an opponent opens one no- trump, in second seat, use Meckwell; in fourth chair after two passes, Cappelletti. Here, two clubs announced a one-suiter, two diamonds asked, and two spades told.Maybe North should have passed, but one can understand his game-try.West led the club ace, under which East signaled enthusiastically with his 10.What happened next?West could anticipate his partner holding one red-suit ace - but which one?Leaving his partner in charge, West continued with his low club.East asked himself why West wanted him on lead.It couldn’t be to shift to diamonds. If West had that ace, he would have either cashed it or underled it.So he must have the heart king.East shifted to the heart three (low with an honor).West won with the king and returned the suit. Now East made the key play of another heart, which promoted a trump trick for West.If South ruffed low, West would overruff.Or if South trumped with his spade king, West would discard and eventually get a spade winner, the ?fth for the defense.PRINTED AND DISTRIBUTED BY PRESSREADER PressReader.com +1 604 278 4604 ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY .ORIGINAL COPY COPYRIGHT AND PROTECTED BY APPLICABLE LAW Page 24 Friday, July 16, 2021 newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com The Record What you get for less than $15/month?Call or email The Record and start your subscription today!
